> the transfer fees and exchange rates are really high for international bank transfers
Have you looked into Wise? For me it's always been cheaper to use than my bank for international transfers.
> can we make the university pay the extra charges (transfer fees)?
Chances of that would be arouuuund 0.
I use AirVPN, but to be honest most will do. Check out prices and uptimes and counties. You can also check out the technical side if that interests you.
Edit: most of the paid VPNs will do, don't use a free one!!
They are nice but there are def spicier noodles if you want them. I think these ones will blow your head off. A friend of mine gave me some.
Indomie are delish though, I will admit.
Yeah unfortunately mobile data connections often have content filters enabled by default. The easiest way to disable it is to phone up or visit in store.
Get a VPN, I recommend Private Internet Access, it's worked on every Eduroam network I've used.
For the future, get a VPN that you can use through your uni internet connection. All your traffic will be encrypted and securely routed through the VPN. Your uni IT services will not be able to see the sites you are trying to access through it. AirVPN and PIA are both reliable and affordable options. But do steer clear of the free VPNs though.
First, when do we get 1000 digits? Let's use the one-digit and two digit options - that's 9 + 2 * 90 = 189. So, we have 811 digits to go. If x is the number of 3 digit numbers, we get 3x = 811 -> x = 811/3 = 270 1/3. So, We go up to 369 as a result, and then the 3 in 370.
Now, how many of them are 7s? We have 10 * 2 = 20 up to 100 (7 and the two-digit numbers that have 7). Now to find the number of 0s up to 369 inclusively, we need to find the 3 digit numbers that contain 7, in the same way. Repeating this for the 100 - 200 combinations, we again get 20. Same for the 200 - 299 (no extra calculation is needed because the first digit is not a 7). Then, for 300 - 369, it's {307, 317, 327, 337, 347, 357, 367}, which is 7 more. Hence the final answer is actually 60 + 7 = 67, not 40.
I've also verified this computationally: https://leetcode.com/playground/2cJAu3n3
As for your second question, I don't know because I didn't take the STEP (took the MAT instead).
Alpine MusicSafe Pro.
They're on Amazon but I got them cheaper last year before a festival.
I have sensory issues and mild tinnitus so they're a godsend!
As stated in another comment, such service will never be cheaper than going out urself. However, according to their reviews it seems to be aight. In terms of cost efficiency, I can't tell you what specific brand and stuff they send out.
At the end you gotta weigh the pros and cons, if you feel like this makes moving in for you more relaxing. Gotta remember after buying all those necessities separately you need to carry them to your accomm which could be a nuisance depending on distance. Who knows maybe another flatmate is in a similar position and y'all could do the shopping together.
Gl anyway and stay safe.
Mendeley is a great place to start and has a Word plugin that will create your reference list.
However it is not always perfect so there can still be an element of manual referencing to be done.
This resource will help with that.
As mentioned above, learn the differences in writing reports, essays and reflections. The biggest problem with reflective pieces is listing what you did.
"For the course, I researched this and then I did that with the group. I did this to make it better and did that."
This is not reflecting, it is listing and it feels like you are reflecting because you are remembering what you did.
If you have any reflections to do buy a journal/diary/notepad and each time you do something start with what you did, then how you actually felt when doing it. Document the problems with the group, how the dynamic worked together and what that meant to YOU!
So it might look like:
"I started with researching the subject, but found it difficult as my understanding was low. I struggle to understand *theory X as it does not fit with my previious experiences.
As the group came together, Jo helped me to understand how theory x fits within the subject, which has helped me to apply context. I can now see that my experience with XYZ allows me to work towards my goal. This has helped me because I am not confident despite appearing like I am. After our group session on 14th July, I was happy to be working in a group as this allows me to use my strength with XYZ to help others."
(You get the idea, (edit) but even this is pretty descriptive of events.)
The worst bit is that it is easy to mark reflections but really hard to write them!
If people don't already know about them, I highly recommend these spicy noodles from Indomie:
My friends recommended them to me and then I introduced them to my dad who now buys a 20 pack regularly.
To test what it is download an app onto your phone (I'm presuming you have an Android, if not your fucked), and just tap the card and if it reads it its NFC, else its RFID (if its contactless).
You have the same chances as the other graduates if you apply for graduate schemes in large companies (personal experience). Most application processes are based on reasoning and numerical tests, where most students don't pass to the next one. If you manage to get through that, then it's in your hands, the way you "market" yourself during interviews with hiring managers and, again, a last assessment day in person. My advice is that the real graduate job hunt starts earlier than that, I wrote this on my blog https://wordpress.com/view/gobacktoeducation.com it's about how I secured an internship. It might be useful, hope it helps! Best of luck
Just get the train! I'm assuming you're going on the 22nd September open day? If so you can get a return train ticket from Sheffield to Edinburgh for under £50 on that day. Sure you'll arrive a bit later than you'd want to, but open day activities will be going on all day and it's likely the only thing you'll miss is the Vice Chancellor's address thing. I'm not sure if Edinburgh does this, but certain universities reimburse travel costs for open days so keep an eye out for that. Your school may also have a travel fund.
I'm not to familiar with Harvard, as I use MLA with footnotes, but this article will be your best shot. http://www.citethisforme.com/harvard-referencing
TBH as long as it consistent throughout and readable, you will be okay. Harvard uses an in-text citation for when you make the reference
"After that I lived like a young rajah in all the capitals of Europe…" (Fitzgerald, 2004).
And then has a reference list at the end with the full citation
Fitzgerald, F. (2004). The great Gatsby. New York: Scribner.
Does this help? I can try and provide some more assistance if needed?
It does sound a bit much.
When I was moving to uni I used something similar to these. They were massive and I managed to fit everything I needed into two of them and then one mini suitcase. Once you've emptied all your stuff you can easily fold them down and put them under your bed or in your wardrobe until you move out instead of having 3 suitcases taking up loads of space.
*not a spon, lol.
Author José-Alain Fralon characterised the relationship between France and Britain by describing the British as "our most dear enemies".
Someone else (I forget who) said something along the lines of: "The English have a love-hate relationship with France. We dislike them in the same way that non-Parisians dislike Parisians. Typically, the English stereotype of the French is that they are arrogant, cynical, and ready to fuck England over whenever they can. This contrasts with the French stereotype of the English, which is that of being arrogant, snobbish and ready to fuck France over whenever they can."
Most sites use HTTPS, so they'd only see the website name i.e. . if in doubt use a VPN, that's what I do. Mullvad is very good - privacy respecting with no logs. Or use 4g/5g when researching such topics.
As everyone else has said, definitely report this person, nobody should ever have someone invade their personal space and I’m sorry that this happened to you!
I also wanted to suggest getting one of these safety locks: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Xhwykzz-Portable-Door-Lock-Additional/dp/B09B5CVRPQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_13?crid=1LLCKBOUJKYRD&keywords=door+lock&qid=1668158027&sprefix=door+lock%2Caps%2C137&sr=8-13
I’ve seen them on tiktok and they’re pretty cheap so it could be worth a try!
Great shout, there are also legal 'criminal identifiers' which I always have handy in my bag. Non toxic but dyes the perps face bright red so the fuckers can be spotted easily: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Criminal-Identifier-Defence-Multi-Function/dp/B076KDXG4Y
These are the ones I bought yesterday! They work really well (not affiliated or anything). I feel like over the ear ones will work better than bud earphones
Soundcore by Anker Life Q20+... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B092J2RWHR?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
There's some good advice here. I'll just add that these sorts of small foam earplugs are very comfortable and super-effective at blocking noise. I used some in hospital recently and slept through all the loud noise that goes on in a ward during the night.
Okay, so.
I wear these ones
They're great, they're transparent, have a very low profile so can't be seen unless someone looks right in your ear, and they have a little case you can put on your keyring when you're not using them so if you go out impromptu you'll still have them.
You can make the Apple pencil snap on to the side of the base iPad like the Air with one of these. You're then close to functionally getting pretty much the exact same experience just by doing that.
I (and virtually everyone I know who got an iPad for university) really don't use it often enough to justify spending more on the Air for its nicer display and better camera. I find my iPad is very handy for some forms of note taking and annotation of slides in lectures, and for using with a Mac via Sidecar or Universal Control. But that's about it, totals to only a few hours of use a week - for most things you need a portable computer for you'll be using your laptop or phone.
So yeah, just get the base model.
As a mature student going back, I treated myself to a new backpack and pencil case:
Backpack: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07BFVHPB4?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share Pencil case: https://amzn.eu/d/hu5AzDk
The backpack has been the best I’ve had, plenty of room for my scrubs, lots of slots and storage. Padded area for laptop too. The charger slot is handy as well (haven’t used it a lot, but nice to have when on the move).
The pencil case is good as well, plenty of room for stationary and able to keep watches, notes, lighter etc in it.
Notion is absolutely brilliant! Using a Kanban style board is really useful (on Notion it's called a "Board View"). This allows you to keep track of your tasks, but also gives more flexibility than just a list. You can have different columns for long term tasks, short term tasks, and priority tasks, etc.
Notion can also help organise other things - it's great as a project board for group projects, and I use it for note taking as well.
Take full sentences. Nothing worse than coming back to notes and trying to decipher what you meant. Quality over quantity I'd say.
I started reading this book last summer (never finished it though), it might help.
It’s not about students per se, if you want to understand the English per se, read this: Watching the English: The International Bestseller Revised and Updated https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1444785206/ . It’s very readable.
There are also plenty of films and TV series (which can help provide cultural references). I’m ancient, so I’m sure people can come up with better examples, but watch Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.
I moved to the UK from an Asian country and visited india very frequently - in the UK I drink water straight out of the tap, it is very very safe to do so. You may want to buy a water purifying jug like this if you are concerned although there really is no need. (I also live at a University very close to Newcastle so similar water quality!)
If you have flatmates with similar issues, buy a portable Washing machine. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B078QJMSVC/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_TV0WPZMYMMV6ZXRS71MX
We have one similar to this between 5 of us. It was about £30 each which for me is about 6/7 weeks of washing and drying. We fill it using a bucket from the sink with hot water, and it can fit a fairly decent amount! And we will flog it to some Freshers in September to claim some money back :)
The problem is that even very good students forget huge amounts of stuff a few months after their exams. To combat this problem the only thing you can do is to often and repeatedly review the material you learnt in past years, both from slides and textbooks, perhaps using memory augmentation aids like https://apps.ankiweb.net/.
But don't worry too much, almost nobody actually memorises their entire degree so if you feel this would take too much time you're in good company.
Hi I am one of the founders of Tidalbase, our new virtual working/social contact platform to help you get through remote learning hell.
We are looking for University Students that are currently studying at a UK University to show our platform to and to understand the issues that students are currently facing such as productivity and isolation you might be facing during the pandemic.
We would love the opportunity to speak with you for 30 minutes of your time over ZOOM
In return we will offer 3 months free membership when we launch later this month.
A bit more about us here: https://tidalbase.com/students/

Thanks in advance!
This is the one I use for uni. It has a padlock and manages to hold quite a lot of heavy things, including my laptop, charger, lunch etc.
Anti-Theft Laptop Backpack,15.6-17.3 Inch Business Travel Backpack Bag with Lock with USB Charging & Headphone Port, Water Resistant College School Computer Rucksack Work Backpack for Mens Womens https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07PP2SDQW/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_Y350V0SB7783P0J46RXT
I've had mine since September and it's not showing any major signs of ware. It also has a padlock if you want to be extra safe. Hope this helps.
Two words my friend: Fire Storms. They happen randomly during summer, but peak in intensity around June-August and are concentrated in the eastern boroughs, often sweeping in off the continent before being dissipated before they can reach the western extents. July will mean you arrive in their peak, so I would advise bringing a flame retardation suit (any colour is fine, but not red or orange otherwise the fire storm think you are one of its young) and emergency fire blankets.
Anyway, I hope this helps. The area isn't too bad if you know what you are doing or have a good guide.
Hi, if you see this could you please fill in this form for my dissertation! It only takes 5/10 mins and is completely anonymous! https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=3c9X5zUfV0Svj3ycaxQ34-iQEvmkS55NvThZCBCkRBxUQlRDSlJGUVA0M01DM1VCWEpPSDNET1ZSSC4u thanks!! dissertation form
My bad, I had the form set to a setting that only allows people from the university to carry it out, if you check it now you should be able to access it, sorry in advance :)!
Another book recommendation that helped me:
https://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Book-Well-Every-Night/dp/1499250533
It is basically about mindfulness and acceptance, the more you can accept being sleepless, the less anxiety you'll feel about it, and it will lead to a better quality of life on the long run.
I struggle with sleep anxiety too, so I understand how bad it can be, and I hope that you'll feel better soon. It helps me to focus my attention on things that are going well for me, for example, having a shelter or food. When the brain is anxious about survival, these things can calm it down a bit.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hope-Help-Your-Nerves-Signet/dp/0451167228
This book helped me a lot with anxiety and you can get it free with a 1 month audible trial.
Specifically, it focuses on anxious feedback loops. For me, I once had a panic attack in a lecture. It was so terrifying that I started becoming anxious about having another one and sure enough, they started happening again and again.
Although your situation is slightly different, the fact that you have said you're anxious about not being able to sleep has some parallels with my situation. Because you have started becoming attached to whether or not you're able to sleep, the anxiety that you won't sleep is going to make it even harder. At the very least, see if you're able to observe these anxious feelings and not worry about if you manage to fall asleep or not.
Hope this might help a little while you wait for therapy.
Check out the Samsung galaxy tab s6 lite. Probably the best affordable tablet that's not an iPad, and it comes with an spen. You could use snotes or Microsoft's note taking app.
Get some of those vacuum storage bags to make transport easier (:
If anybody could help me by answering this short questionnaire, it would be very much appreciated.
the topic is on security with in cryptocurrency technologies i.e. blockchain and how much users generally know.
Thanks.
Am currently doing a Comp Sci course, Theres lots of people who haven't coded much or at all, it will be very tough unless you are willing to put in the hours to learning. Definitely try it out before hand, I suggest learning fundamentals of programming and starting with a few beginner languages like Python and C#, plenty of online content out there and you will be using it during uni anyway. Most first year modules will be C# orientated if its games you wanna do theres always Unity but I wouldn't touch it until you understand C# at a intermediate level, lots of people fall down the Unity hole and never end up learning C# properly. Check out W3Schools and Edabit , see if you like it and go from there.
I use Emacs with ORG mode, with a file per module and a heading per lecture.

To sync my notes between devices I use https://syncthing.net/ running on my desktop, laptop, phone and VPS
Hey kjeike! The link for our study hall is https://tinychat.com/gottastudy and the password is "getstudying"! Here is also an intro document for how to use the room: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qP15OKqTIVrFLwmcIinRNc4sfPOXwrjfp6JkpxDiSyE/edit
A couple of us are there right now, so you're welcome to join us! :D
Yup, https://orgmode.org/ is the plugin that adds the tools for manipulating headlines and such. Since it's a plain text format you don't need to care about keeping everything formatted nicely, you can embed latex, images, code (which you can run in the editor and get the result of inserted below, kind of like a repl). Another nice thing about org being a plaintext format is that if you want to search through all your notes you can just use ripgrep in your notes folder.
I took one small suitcase - everything else I took in supermarket banana boxes which were much easier to stack. These fitted under my bed quite nicely (bed was like a cupboard if i lifted the mattress off). I doubt you will fit everything into one massive suitcase - you will probably have more stuff at the end of the year anyway as well.
I used supermarket versions of these for clothes - my flatmates also used bags for life / big IKEA bags as well
I use this one - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B076M85W1K/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It fits pretty much most things I need in it, and enough room for my 14 inch laptop
This is a revision guide for A Level Physics which is what most of the people on your course will have done. I didn’t take it so can’t comment on the quality of that particular book, but I think that kind of thing would be useful to look at!
The maths-y bits should be easier. I studied abroad in France as part of my maths degree with an honestly appalling level of French, but that subject’s pretty much the same in any language.
Yeah I've never heard of Thunder VPN - I wouldn't go with that. Go for one of the main brands: some examples include ProtonVPN (I use this), NordVPN, or ExpressVPN.
But if you're looking for something free, Windscribe is quite decent and I use it mainly just to get past country restrictions. Although if you have the money to pay for a VPN, go with one of the three I mentioned before :)
I'd be very surprised if the answer to this wasn't a no on both counts unfortunately.
You can get some add-in ones which don't require any plumbing changes to install such as:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/IBAMA-Cleaning-Non-Electric-Mechanical-Attachment/dp/B01LPETWVW?th=1
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B087JWN3VK
(not recommendations)
They get the water supply buy you adding in a valve to the pipe that supplies the cistern. Although they typically won't fit all kinds of toilets - when I was in student halls in Lancaster the cistern was in the wall so there was no way anything like this setup would have been possible, but different halls will have different toilet designs.
If you've got a shared bathroom you'll also need to consider what other people think - to be honest I can't really imagine anyone objecting but its something to consider. Assuming you are only going to install one then you've also limited yourself to 1 out of the n toilets, and depending on the design alot of the toilets have a shower in as well. At least in Lancaster the shared toilets also have a cleaner, its possible they might notice and complain for some silly reason.
Folder per module that required note-taking (some didn't, if they were mostly practical). I bought notebook paper in bulk rather than notebook-per-subject. Then every page of notes was dated, numbered, categorized (lecture notes vs reading notes vs tutorials etc), and went into the appropriate folder.
Or, just buy this. It's written by a lecturer whose research is on mathematical thinking and learning, specializing in reasoning among undergraduate mathematics students and professional mathematicians.
I have this really great recipe book for students full of quick and easy (and cheap) things to cook along with loads of basic instructions regarding cooking things like rice and pasta and eggs at the front. I got it as a Christmas gift before I went to uni and my accommodation actually included a copy in with our kitchen.
here's a link to it on amazon. Used, it's like 4 quid, new about 9. I'd really recommend it
Hello all!
I'm trying to get the last lot of feedback for my dissertation.
It's an Android app designed to consolidate existing knowledge of SQL targeted at the GCSE syllabus.
Please find attached a link to the play store where you can download my app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=draganddrop.android.Douglas.com.SQuizL
Thanks!
Hi all, I’m researching a topic for my dissertation on whether users are safe when either allowing or denying permissions when downloading apps on the Google Play Store.
It would be great if Android users could download the app and complete the questionnaire.
If for some reason you’re unable to download (e.g. iOS user) but have had experience with downloading apps from the Play Store, you’re still able to complete the questionnaire.
Please let me know if you have any questions in regards to the questions or the app.
Thanks!
Cold shower Society is just too narrow. It would give the wrong impression on people. I would say you should make it "Society of Self Development". I got a good idea for your first meeting or lecture, talk about compound interest and say if you spent 1% a day improving yourself for 365 days you will improve by 3800% in a years time. Talk about keystone habits aswell, you can learn more about this reading The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg.
Code: The Hidden Language of Computer Hardware and Software & Essentials of Computer Architecture are the two books i'm really looking forward to read. I haven't bought any books yet because i'm going to be getting a kindle soon. What uni you going to?
Surely you have an old iPhone 4s or an Android phone or something obsolete. I saw this app earlier: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pas.webcam
Maybe someone you know has an old iPhone 4 or galaxy s2 or something they don't give a fuck about, tell them about your dilemma and I'm sure they will find it funny enough to spare it at the risk of it getting nicked in order to catch the thief.
