well this blew up... totally took down my database after it ranked highly on r/technology and news.ycombinator (still kinda high on both). For more info check them at: http://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/1ugou3/evidence_my_isp_is_making_money_from_tracking_its/ and https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7016058
Pro-Tip for Freshman Year: Get some Pop-Ice Freezer Pops, or a cheaper off-brand (though these are usually on sale during the summer months in grocery stores).
Put a sign on your white board that says something like "Free Freezer Pops". Great way to meet a ton of people in the early warm weeks. Easy ice breaker (pardon the pun) for a couple of dollars.
Also, Ramen.
That sucks. The cheapest UPS you can buy can support a modem / router for 3-4 hours. I think they are a worthy investment because APCO in Blacksburg is notoriously unreliable (VT electric is awesome).

First, I would recommend going to Advance Auto on North Main and get them to check your error with their computer. They will do it for free and it could be as simple as the gas cap isn't on all the way, causing fumes to trigger a sensor.
If you need more extensive work, I would recommend Modern Automotive in Christiansburg. It's on Cambria off 460. Gary and Dave work up front and have always been timely and honest with me. They have been my go-to shop for 3 years and know a lot.
Probably not as accepting as Cornell or something, but 4 / 5 stars according to last year's CampusPride reviews (tied with W&M for 2nd in VA as I recall, UR was #1). VT is not a southern school by any stretch of the imagination. Culturally I'd say we are closer to us to be culturally more like a Maryland, Rugers, or Ohio State (with the bro level turned down a bit), than Tennessee or NC State. We're not in New England, but definitely not in the South.
Also check out the student run LGBT magazine: The Interloper, and of course the University's LGBT Alliance.
Other Japanese Hibachi type places should have it. It's also called 'white sauce' or 'yum yum sauce'.
Never tried making it myself, but theres recipes out there. http://allrecipes.com/recipe/yum-yum-sauce/
It looks like your girlfriend is taking a picture with flash in a pitch-back room. I'm willing to bet money that dust/scratches that you normally wouldn't see would appear more easily in a picture under those conditions.
As for the things strewn about the floor, anything could have happened. But it wasn't a ghost.
Here's a free webcam motion detector that your girlfriend can try and use to capture whoever is doing this. http://download.cnet.com/Webcam-Motion-Detector/3000-2348_4-75609375.html
I have one of these sitting around without power supply, but they're under 10 on ebay.
The only thing I've been able to verify that works correctly is the hard drive, and you'll probably have to wipe it and load a new operating system.... Otherwise, it's a piece, but you're welcome to it (and I'd suggest the empo over this thing, honestly.)
Buy a cheap fire safe if you're so concerned about RA's finding your weed. Or set yourself up for life if you travel a lot and grab a Pelican 1120 camera case which is both smell-proof and accepts a travel lock.
I had SingleDigits at The Edge Apartments. Tbh, they weren't too bad. There would be times that it would go down, but that probably happened about 5-7 times over a year. So not too bad. I could stream Netflix on my roku, watch YouTube videos on my phone, and my 3 other roommates doing the same, and it still would work pretty well.
As for the security issue, I have NordVPN and would keep that on when using it. I also have paid McAfee security. And never had an issue of someone stealing my information on either my computer or phone.
Another one to add: I did Tinker Cliffs wildly hungover, beautiful but I do not recommend the hungover part.
The night before our buddy said hey let's go hiking tomorrow morning, I know a good trail. Cool. We all show up in regular sneakers/clothing because "it's an easy trail no worries", with water but no snacks because "it won't take that long."
A couple miles in we're like hey how long is this? Not long, he says. Another 2 miles later we hit the final climb and are fucking dying. The last bit to the top is a very steep climb. My friend finally says "huh I must have been thinking of a different trail..."
It's not an easy trail, but it has a beautiful lookout at the top. Then we basically fell down the 4 mile return and ate a MASSIVE breakfast in town after.

I would check the grade distribution https://irweb.ir.vt.edu/webtest/Authenticated/GradeDistribution.aspx
As well as rate my professor http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/
I tested out of the class, but from what I've heard it's not to bad as long as you don't have Nottingham.
I can't figure why in the hell you would need to know all of that stuff. I worked in the environmental field for over a decade and I don't know it. I have a little book that has all that stuff in it and when I needed to know I just looked it up. It is titled "Important Trees of Eastern Forests" published by the USDA Forest Service (1968). It has color photos of the leaves, bark, seeds, and even the texture and grain of the wood.
I rescued it from a trash can back in 1993 when I was an VT undergrad doing an internship with the USDA NRCS. They were cleaning out the USDA office getting rid of out of date stuff. I figured trees hadn't changed since 1968 so I took it.
I am glad I did because it has really come in handy over the years especially when I was doing NEPA planning for the Army and needed to know the Latin names all of the different tree species that inhabit the forests at Fort Bragg for example.
Here is the same book but a newer version published in 1991. It might be a good study guide for you.

Angel's Rest in Pearisburg, it's about a half-hour drive. It's uphill all the way, took me about two hours to get up there from the trailhead (though I am out of shape...) but my god that view when the sun rose is nothing like I've ever witnessed before.
I just switched mine doing what streetr8cer13 said. Works fine for me right now.
~~I also assume it doesn't have the auto-deletion after 90 days like the other system, or is that still the case?~~
NVM, just read https://sites.google.com/a/vt.edu/goinggoogle/

I can't find any official news from Tech or who's sponsoring, so if anyone knows..
So say if I stream movies via plex from a personal library I have, it wouldn't be counted against the threshold? I would assume it would stream over LAN and thus not be counted against me, but I'm not familiar with the infrastructure at VT.
Can someone set me up with one of these and bring it to the meetup so I can go to the meetup from Michigan? http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/03/texas-student-sends-robot-to-school-in-his-place-cant-get-it-t/
The area a little further west of Radford was probably the other part of the Radford Arsenel at Dublin. It was the Bagging Plant during WWII (powder was put in cloth bags as the charge to be loaded with the shell in large artillery pieces and battleship guns). The area has a multitude of bunkers to store ammunition, which still exist. The plant that manufactured the textiles was sold off, and other parcels around the edge have been cut loose for development. But the main part of the facility is still under government control with limited access. Take Bagging Plant Road between Old U.S. 11 (between Fairlawn and Dublin) and VA 100 and you pass the main gate, where there is usually a HumVee and several other vehicles parked there. See https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=37.100714,-80.645399&spn=0.059899,0.085745&t=h&z=14 and zoom in from there.
With an adblocker a normal person can use? Nope, I have no idea. Basically look at https://adblockplus.org/en/filter-cheatsheet (for uBlock Origin or Adblock Plus) but block the domain vt.evaluationkit.com
(This will break your SPOT surveys; so you should revert it at some point, I guess?)
I don't have AM3, but I thought those of you that do might find this interesting.

Ah, my favorite rivalry! Welcome
There seems to be quite a bit of housing available on AirBnB

Check both of them and talk to the promoters and DJs. There's at least 1 EDM show every week, thrown either by these two collectives or Third Eye Presents + Boogieburg.
He is using PHP. preg_match should work just fine. Modifying your regex a bit for PHP (it's the same, just using shorthand and removing the brackets):
^\d{5}(, ?\d{5})*$
Yeah, it says he is going to be in Toledo, Ohio tomorrow. (Source: http://www.songkick.com/concerts/21472718-riff-raff-at-toledos-main-street-bar-and-grill)
l3thalbloo's link says it's going to be "in honor" of Riff Raff, so who knows if he'll be here or not.
For software, I'd recommend REAPER to try first. It's $60 to buy it if you like it, and I think they offer academic discounts. It comes with great free plug-ins and many tutorials are out there. Easy to migrate files between Mac/PC if needed.
Seconding u/geetar_man suggestions about hardware. Reaper will work well with the FocusRite stuff.
Lol did you get that email too? "Google has solutions for educators"
Edit: capitalizing on the pandemic. Imagine if Google and Amazon donated GPU hours to projects like Folding@home etc to advance research on COVID-19
Just buy a $100 SSD in that case and boom you have a "ultrabook". You can add ram. The internal graphics cards are so much better than what they were a few years ago. I have used AUTOCAD it is not some crazy power hungry program. Below are the requirements for your two programs and it is nothing crazy. I agree a i5 would be better than the i3, but regardless a $1800 laptop is stupid.
Finished the build for the N64 logo. Here is a drawing of the part and here is a link to the build...just load that second file onto the SD card and it SHOULD be good to go. EDIT: fixed that second link
the throne... ahhh good times. those were some of the best shits to be had. taking in nice fall air.. not much better than that. i remember this great homage to the throne https://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=19131163664
Might not be exactly what you're looking for, but the Code for NRV group (I help lead) on meetup.com might be of some interest to you. We're a group of volunteers that are developing for civic good and advocate for open data particularly from governments. Depending on what kind of things you're interested in, there might be some projects we have laying around that would be interesting for you, or we always welcome people who bring their own and encourage discussion and offer resources where we can. We aren't student-based, so we're here year-round and currently meet every other Wednesday. Feel free to drop by one of our meetups when you get down here just to check it out, if you'd like!
If Oasis doesn't have it, you might want to try the international/Caribbean grocery stores on Williamson Road in Roanoke. You can try calling ahead.
If you don't find it there, Amazon definitely has it.
Try the eduroamCAT tool first. It's ugly, but it works. If you are on Android, grab the app from the Play Store (you can remove the app once you are online). If you are on iOS, grab the profile from cat.eduroam.org.
If that doesn't work, call 4-Help, as others have already mentioned.
That said, one class at 16 weeks vs two at 32 is a huge difference. You shouldn't need to dedicate a portion of your entire freshman year towards English classes if you don't have to.
My biggest piece of advice is to do your research on professors before you sign up for the Honors English. I took it, but my professor focused the entire semester on oriental philosophy. Books we read were Tao Te Ching, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, and one other one. Not terrible on their own, but also not what I signed up for. You also have the option to CLEP test English and get 3-6 transfer credits so you don't waste your time on them at VT.
The VT student health insurance is pretty bad, I had to be on it as an international student and it had really high deductibles and copays.
It might be better for you to buy insurance through an ACA exchange, and as a student with(I assume) little income you would be eligible for many subsidies meant to subsidize low income people.
EDIT: Here's what the healthcare.gov website has to say about it https://www.healthcare.gov/young-adults/college-students/
lived here last year, the internet is included in rent, but you can upgrade if you want faster speeds. The free tier was fast and does not need to be upgraded. ref: https://www.speedtest.net/result/8677299236 edit: forgot to include that this is a dedicated connection and not shared with other residents
Another I'd recommend that seems to be a little under the radar: Apple Orchard Falls. It's about an hour from Blacksburg. But, I would not recommend following the directions AllTrails gives. Instead, route yourself to North Creek Campground in Buchanan, then just keep going past the campground. You'll hit a gravel road, and follow that to the trailhead. The AllTrails directions take you to the parking area off the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is really steep going down to the falls, and doesn't give you a nice hike through the woods.
I forgot, I also have a coffee table up for grabs. Say $15? I made the top after the glass shattered during a party (someone fell over the couch and put their hand through it haha). It's got 3 coats of clear on it, and I'll give you the rest of the can if you want to put more on (probably a good idea). Here's the pic.
here you go. The leaf makes it about a foot longer, and just stand a bit back from there and it's good length for bp. Chairs don't come with it, though :( Well, actually the one gray metal one does. I got that.. somewhere..
whoops, forgot to post the link... 🤦♂️
either 'heavy duty' or 'extreme' mounting tape.
just make sure to wipe down/clean the surfaces with rubbing alcohol beforehand and you're golden.
In Spring 2022 it was this book (4th edition, by Poole) and sections
1.1-1.3, 2.1-2.3, 3.1-3.3, 3.5-3.7, 4.1-4.4, 5.1-5.3, 7.3
(Your teacher might throw in some supplementary sections too.)
I have been using GoodNotes all of last semester and it’s so convenient. Highly recommend it if you have an IPad. I kept a notebook on me and only had to use it once or twice.
I recommend getting a matte screen protector so that it feels more like writing on paper, I personally hate the frictionless feel.
Here’s the one I purchased: iCarez Anti-Glare Matte Screen... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GZMMYHT?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Can't really help with the move or recommend anyone, but can recommend this product to protect your mattress to keep it clean during the move. With respect, trucks aren't clean places for mattresses given you sleep on it every night. For the mirror, blankets could work.
Best mattress bag
It's been a decade, but they weren't bad. From move-in until the first week or two of September aren't fun, but after that it was just fine. If you're accustomed to constant central AC it may be a change, but I remember my roommate and I just had a shitty box fan in the window and then one propped up across from each of our beds.
I live in a city that has almost no central AC in residential buildings, I get by with this fan in all my windows for a majority of the summer.
Go to Amazon and get a cold brew maker. I have one. Takes out a lot of guesswork and it's fun! I have this one.
Ok, this might not help but I'm gonna school you on cold brew.
You will need:
You don't need some $100 cold brew kit with some filter you pour through as your brains leak out of your ears. Fuck all that noise. I've done it, it makes no difference.
Procedure:
Get this instead of the Dell OEM one, U’ll prob save a $10 or $20 bucks and it’ll be a lot lighter to carry as well. And then, don’t forget about getting a usb c cable of course
Good question! We'll be certain to add this to our site's FAQ.
Google provides this definition: "an event, typically lasting several days, in which a large number of people meet to engage in collaborative computer programming."
If you'd like a more complete definition and description I'd recommend this very short (just a few paragraphs) read: https://medium.com/hackathons-anonymous/wtf-is-a-hackathon-92668579601
Another option for self-hosting like this is Digital Ocean. I have a VPS there for $5/month.
The one thing about this is you have to set it up yourself (installing/setting up a LEMP/LAMP stack, all the domain stuff like buying and setting up DNS, etc).
I'm not CS either, but if we're in the business of shameless plugs check out an internet startup I work for: The City Swig.
We're basically taking all of the bar, grocery store, and ABC prices and making them sortable. Launching in Blacksburg soon!
Sweet thanks. I found this one online here: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:161359
I don't really need the slits so I don't mind if they come out non-functioning.
Would it be possible to change the download file? Apparently that guy uploaded a new version with a decreased incline.

Thanks for your help!
I cannot speak to the MS vs MEng dilemma, but I will say that housing can be a challenge depending on your needs. If you're just looking for a single bedroom apartment or a room to rent, you'll likely have plenty options. However, Blacksburg rent tends to be higher than Christiansburg, which can be around a 20-30 min commute depending. There is a solid bicycling option from Christiansburg, the Huckleberry Trail, which keeps you off the roads for the majority of the commute. (For reference, a 3-bedroom 2-full bath house will be around $1200-$1600+ rent per month)
For renting my understanding is that most contracts get signed around October for the following year (so, Oct 2019 you'd sign a lease starting Aug 2020). There are always places available but the selection gets tighter at different times of the year.
VT is a typical rural land-grant university in the United States, mostly in the middle of nowhere but with a large enough enrollment to support a diversity of interesting food/drink options. You'll also be just 15-30 min from some amazing hiking. Elevation is for the general area is above 2,000 ft (600 m).
Do you have a study focus area?
First off, have you checked with apple's site to make sure they aren't offering a repair program for your model? If you live near an apple store you might be able to get it repaired(for free or cheap) if the problem stems from some sort of defect. They might also be able to work out some deal with you (i.e. charge you X amount for every part replaced.)
My other suggestion would be to find a (working) logic board on ebay or amazon and just fix it yourself. ifixit has some amazing breakdowns that can walk you through the process.
Source: my mac's logic board no longer functions at 100%. Got it diagnosed at industrial park and asking price was $700 plus. Currently looking for a cheap logic board to replace my old one so I can make the switcheroo. Won't be buying a new mac. :)
Are you using your VT account to log in?If yes then You aren’t using the free version. Students have access to the VT zoom stuff too it’s not just professors.
Edit: Link to zoom pricing here very likely whoever hosts your meetings logged in using their PID otherwise I have no idea unless you are just getting lucky lol
A little more detail on the contest, from Dropbox: link
Edit: We had 67 points when I submitted this and are up to 91 now, should be interesting to see how many we get!
Edit 2: If you don't like giving out your real @vt.edu address, you can use aliases. These are created in MyVT->Manage your accounts->Edit (all the way to the right of "email accounts" if you've transitioned to Google Apps)->Add alias.
Edit 3: You have to install Dropbox to get points for our school, you can't just sign up! Also, we get extra points if you walk through the "Get Started" page
Sorry guys! I suck at Reddit. 2 bedroom/ 1 bathroom apartment available in Windsor Hills, move-in ready now. On the 2nd floor with a patio, we've had a really nice experience here. Gym, pool, and multiple bus stops in the complex. Pet friendly with no breed restrictions. In unit washer/dryer.

A large group probably wouldn't work well due to differences in programs/workouts and schedules and possibly the amount of equipment. forresja got in touch with me first, so I'll probably be lifting with him unless we can't work out a schedule. However, I think we should all meet up before school starts. We can split up into groups based on schedules and goals. We can meet up on the 21st. Does anybody have a recommendation for where?
There's also a fittocracy group that someone made for VT. I don't have an account, but some of you might like it. Here's the link http://www.fitocracy.com/accounts/login/?next=/group/695/

For anyone interested, here are the fall hours

This is my go to hike: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/virginia/brush-mountain-horse-trail

Super convenient to get to, decentish elevation gain, decentish view from certain parts of the trail.

Everyone really likes cascades, but the falls aren't that impressive to me, and the hike itself is less of a hike and more of a walk on a very gradual incline.
I'm pretty certain your situation/experience was 100% due to the reservation having been booked via an OTA (in this case hotels.com). There's definitely regulations re: the hotel communicating directly with the purchaser, since your transaction was with the OTA, not the Inn.
What antivirus do you use?
The those ~~CDs~~ drink coasters you give us at the beginning of year don't seem to do much beyond install old versions of Firefox, clutter my desktop, and install an antivirus that stops my computer from backing up properly?
All I ask is why?
For Windows, at least, Microsoft Security Essentials covers all that stuff. Also, since the campus likes being green, why don't they just make a Ninite-like program with all the required stuff?
Also, if you're trying to impress a cinema nerd or just want to expand your horizons, Mubi is free for students. The premise is that they release one film a day and it's only available for 30 days thereafter. A lot of it is pretty artsy stuff but there are a few hidden gems.
I think it does still make sense. The GoogDNS servers won't change what your ISP is setting as the search domains.
For more (really interesting) information, read how Search Domains work on Stack Overflow. They are like DNS in that their default values can be set by your ISP, but their values are set separately.
If you are using a laptop, download and use this tool to change your wifi mac address.
Once you've done that, you can use the wifi labeled "xfinitiy Wifi" as much as you want. Only drawback is once the free hour pass expires, you'll have to disconnect from the network, click a button on that tool to change your mac address, then use a new login.
Sounds like a lot of work, but it's not. just register a bullshit email address using the autopop up xfinity website and don't bother actually creating it through gmail or yahoo or whatever domain name you use.
This is much better than using the shit wifi at starbucks or at any of the bars. You can sit at the farmers market all day using the internet there to work on a report or whatever.
I recommend using KeePass, the setting-the-bar standard of open source, free, password managers.
It makes it easy to generate secure passwords that you’ll never have to remember. Use a different password on each site that matters.
I think there’s also KeePass solutions that will let you sync between your devices, but I haven’t used them myself.
Source: I’m a CS major. FOSS (free and open source software) is a rich subculture of ours, with strong philosophies such as data privacy.
A paid VPN service doesn't do anything other than changing which upstream providers are able to do deep packet inspection. What is your threat model?
For actual security, you need transport encryption which can be achieved through enforcing SSL/TLS. Tor can be used in conjunction with this if you also want anonymity.
I made an N64 logo in inventor...it's a .ipt file...idk where to go from here. Here's a link if you fellers wanna download it. EDIT: I also am not sure if the dimensions are exactly right or anything...this was just my best guess. Improvements on my design are welcome.
https://zety.com/cover-letter-builder I love this website. You answer some questions about your current position/ history, and they make you a cover letter. At the end it will try to make you pay to download it, just copy as plain text and paste into word or docs or whatever you use, and fix up the formatting a little.
I love to stay informed on local issues, however, there's a right and wrong way to do so.
>As for lack of effort and research...did you read the story?
Where did I say it was lack of effort in research...did you read my comment? It was very clearly directed at the manner of professionalism and medium you choose to convey your research. I've said this here before, don't use wordpress.com blogs if you want people to take you seriously.
>One, traffic on BitTorrent's commonly used ports is commonly throttled, restricted, or even blocked on intranets which employ internal QoS.
That doesn't make them incompatible.
>Two, BitTorrent uses TCP for data transmission due to its need for reliability and error correction, while VOIP services use UDP which is better for real-time communication. The two protocols are distinct and are used for different purposes.
Sure, that doesn't make it impossible, just not an ideal tool for the job.
This is just one example, there are plenty of other services and protocols that have been used and abused over the years.
>Encrypted traffic is not immune from analysis. The data payload is the only encrypted portion. Packets containing encrypted data can still be analyzed, categorized, and prioritized based upon their metadata, which is not encrypted, and thus common QoS can still prioritize encrypted packets based on source IP, source/destination port, and protocol.
Right, which is why NN is important because that is enough info to block or throttle connections.
However, there are still ways around that, at least in the short term. https://signal.org/blog/doodles-stickers-censorship/
The reality is, while we may try to disguise our traffic with a VPN, ISP may just charge more for access to VPN.
>How about the IEEE
That's an idea, and I am in favor of experts expressing their expert voices, however allowing them alone would be too technocratic.
As long as you use a legitimate VPN like Mullvad or Proton VPN, it shouldn't be much of a problem. Be prepared for lots of malware though. Make sure uBlock Origin is installed on your browser and run a full scan of your machine after you're done. Qbittorent is also the best torrent client. Also, do not use a browser addon as your VPN, it'll only be a proxy for the connections coming from your browser so, your ISP will be able to see your torrenting client connections. A desktop application VPN will encrypt all connections on your entire PC. If you do get caught, the ISP could potentially ban you, so it's important to make sure you do it right. If you have more questions I suggest visiting r/Piracy.
IMO I get the full "loops" instead of the hooks because the hooks would occassionally come off the rod.
Writing tablets are amazing imo. A good writing tablet like https://www.amazon.com/10x6-25-Graphics-Battery-Free-Shortcut-Pressure/dp/B077P6BQP7 (I use this one). Feels like a nice marker and software is pretty good. I'm not too sure what I will do when classes are in person tho

This is a life saver. I’m a hot sleeper and I kept this plugged in and pointed on me at night and it was a huge help.
I lived in Thomas Hall back when it still existed. I had a specific fan that had two fans in it that could change direction. Adjusted to fill out the whole window, and had a thermometer so it could cut itself off if it cooled down the room enough (it didn't). It worked really well, all things considered. Here's pretty much the same thing
I've actually read about the professor in a book on sleep. Ekirch himself wrote a different book on the topic of night, which I would assume is the backbone for the course. My guess is that the class is pretty chill.
I mean, if you need to, you can get sheets with deep pockets for about $20 on amazon.
The real pro-tip is to get a body pillow to go between you and the wall. :)
So my freshman year I got something in this style: https://www.amazon.com/Credit-Holder-Stainless-Wallet-Holding/dp/B07DN93B33/
With a bit of practice I was able to pop it open, slide the card through the reader, and have it back in my wallet, and closed in a single motion. Swipe access didn't bother me after that.
My roommate and I got one of those foldable bungee chairs, like this one.
I graduated In Aerospace Engineering with a minor in math 2 years ago. The professor, Rogers (if he is still teaching) is really good in office hours. I Would also recommend having a study group in that class. We had a group of 4 spiting ideas off another till we understand the material.
this book helped : https://www.amazon.com/Introduction-Fourier-Integrals-Dover-Mathematics/dp/0486453073
If math 4425 is still Fourier Integrals
I hope this helps. good luck
Check the reviews on this Amazon mattress for $154 in a queen size. Free shipping if you have Prime. Get a platform bed from them too. No need for a box spring. https://www.amazon.com/Zinus-Master-Ultima-Comfort-Mattress/dp/B005G5SIRG/ref=sr_1_5?s=furniture&ie=UTF8&qid=1501402389&sr=1-5&keywords=queen+mattress
I believe that routers are now frowned upon, but I may be wrong. Honestly though, the $10 cable (Even less on amazon! https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-USB-2-0-Cable-Male/dp/B00NH13DV2/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1501426166&sr=1-5&keywords=printer+cable) is much easier and cheaper than a router setup.
I'll be a sophomore this year and brought mine last year when I was on campus as a freshman. I didn't use it much because I was either studying or when I had free time I was out or hanging with friends but I'm still happy I brought it. When I wanted to play games or watch tv away from my roommate I could. A recommendation of mine would be to get one of those Vivo monitor stands on amazon and to get a compact keyboard like a poker or something along the lines. Both of these will save you lots of desk space.

Yes totally bring it, you will more than likely buy Box Fans to help with air flow if your in a dorm without AC. Probably my biggest mistake was buying a expensive laptop when what I should've done was buy a decent small laptop and spend the main amount of money on an actual PC.
Your classmates have some of the best advice around - be sure and listen to them.
But just something to consider:
The Lenovo ThinkPad "T" series is among the most popular business laptops in the US.
Large companies buy them or lease them in the thousands. Then, when we are done with them, we sell them or the leasing company sells them to a refurbisher, and they either try to sell them on Amazon or ships them off to a 2nd/3rd world charity.
The ThinkPad "T" is night and day different from any Lenovo device you can put your hands on at BestBuy.
It's solidly well built, and very easy to repair, compared to most laptops.
Here is an example for $320:
Lenovo ThinkPad T430 i5, 4GB RAM, 320Gb HDD, CD/DVD
$100 or less will let you max the RAM out to somewhere between 8-16GB.
Then another $150 for a 500GB SSD.
Boom, solid like a rock laptop for ~$500.
Then you leverage your Microsoft DreamSpark student access to download Windows 8 or Windows 10 and the latest Microsoft Office, and you're all set.
If money is tight, $300ish for what was top-of-the-line 3 years ago will last longer, and run better than the frighteningly low-end devices you can buy new in the same price range.
To add some stuff to /u/frankyn00 's advice:
I doubt the fire marshal is going to be the one with a problem. He'd mostly be concerned about:
I imagine the size limit is less about fire-code problems and more about the potential water damage that could occur if some dude had some ridiculous hundred-gallon saltwater tank and it broke.
The ThinkPad T440 has a terrible trackpad.
Its easily mitigated with an external mouse like this magnificent specimen:
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Anywhere-Mouse-Mac/dp/B007PJ4Q4A
But Lenovo got the word from their customers, and skipped back two generations to an older, but much more reliable implementation for the T450 & T450s.
The ThinkPad "T" series has probably been the most popular device issued to Technology Field Engineers of various types for the past 10 years or so. The 15" MacBook Pro and ThinkPad "W" series are nibbling away at that now.
I'm assuming that you meant "three" instead of "there". If that's the case, I use this
I use this one. It works great. There are others on Amazon that look just like it because they are basically all the same camera.
I got a bulky laptop for my first semester. Over winter break I built a desktop using a mini-itx case (aka tiny form factor), and it along with a monitor fit cozily on my desk.
I wish I just brought a desktop and a small, compact laptop instead. This big laptop is annoying to carry around and pull out and plug up because I have poor battery life (even though most classes have readily accessible outlets everywhere).
As far as laptop recommendations go: The UX305 by ASUS seems fantastic. It used to be 700$, but now it's 800$ sadly.
I wouldn't worry about having a "tablet-PC", but you might want to get a cheap drawing tablet.
Get one of these: http://www.amazon.com/NEEWER-Digital-Shutter-Release-Trigger/dp/B005LTH7QA I use it all the time and love it. It will allow you to set a pre-timer so that you can get into your car and then you can set the long exposure time through it also. I use it primarily for timelapse photography. Worth every penny.
