god that’s terrifying... all of sound like dangerous and terrifying situations. possible assulters, peeping toms, maybe robbers?? it’s freaking endless. sometimes it’s terrifying just being a woman... if i were you I’d absolutely get some protection and a dog before living on your own. it’s hard to raise a puppy but beyond worth it. sometimes just having a second set of senses is worth it, the company is very comforting too.
there’s also a stick that you can get for your door - one like this Master Lock 265D Door Security Bar, Adjustable from 27-1/2 in. to 44-1/2 in, White, Pack of 1 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002YUX8I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_IXNNDbKCQQYVZ
Thanks so much for the intense story. Fuck the douchebags on here. Unfortunately Reddit in the past year has been swamped by just a veritable flood of nasty, miserable people, and it's a real fucking shame. If you're looking for some support through this, there really are some incredible subs for exactly that But yeah, lots of just very unhappy people taking their misery out on others who were never on Reddit before the past 12 months.
P.S. You and everyone should spend the ten bucks and get yourselves good pepper spray. . Attach it to your car key or whatever you have in your hand most often. I'm a guy and still like the bright pink one because it's easy to see when you have to act fast (I'm bi so maybe it bugs me less lol).
I've seen it recommended that you get pepper spray in gel form, as you don't have to worry about the wind blowing it back into your face. Amazon carries it.
Definitely get one! I just got this personal alarm and pepper spray set for $11.15 with Prime as I moved to a new state and started dog walking on remote paths by myself. Hopefully you’ll never need it, but just in case!! They are pink, cute, and easy to put with keys or in your purse.

We installed these on the door that leads from the garage to the house and the front door. Unlike hotel U-locks, the door won't budge with this engaged. Small adjustment to it, get 2" wood screws from the hardware store so it goes into the frame.
Be safe, hope you get out soon.
I’ve travelled for years on my own for business. At times I’ve. Even in large cities and had to walk to meetings 20 min away on nearly dark mornings. I carry a stun gun also. The sound and electricity will scare anyone off. Here’s my other suggestion. If you ever feel you’re being followed, turn to the person and put your hand out and say “Stop following me!” Be firm and stand your ground. Look them in the eyes. If they say “I’m not following you.” You can always say “Fine. Then please, keep walking”, and point the opposite direction. Don’t be afraid to say something. Even if your wrong, that persons not going to be bothering you anytime soon. Remember that depending on what state you live in, stun guns can be illegal. So make sure you double check that. Here’s my favorite stun gun.
I'm glad you were safe in the end. Scary. If you haven't read this book, It's helpful http://the-eye.eu/public/Books/Radical%20Feminist%20Literature/Gavin%20de%20Becker/The%20Gift%20of%20Fear%20%28123%29/The%20Gift%20of%20Fear%20-%20Gavin%20de%20Becker.pdf
If you have an old phone or tablet there is a free program called Alfred Security Camera. I use it I has been VERY helpful. I just put the phone in my front window in plain sight. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ivuu&hl=en_US&gl=US
before going to bed check your room throughly and lock your room door with maybe a home security lock
You might want to invest in a door check. These are like the security chains or bars on hotel doors, but you can buy one that's much better, that's virtually impossible for someone to kick in.
Here's a decent one that's only $11 USD. Buy the longest, strongest screws you can to install it, or any of them. Good luck! ♡ Granny

This is what you need. Tell your landlord and/or property manager and next time flat out tell him he's making you uncomfortable. Tell your other neighbours too, if you have any. Change your routines and start carrying mace or a spray bottle of hairspray or perfume, they do the same job. Get a loud alarm thingy to carry around with you too
You could make it look like you have a dog by getting a spiral stake and tether if your yard isn't fenced in. Ask a friend if their dog has an old ball you can put outside or ask to borrow a friend's dog and pet sit a couple of days.
They make a floodlight adapter that you can plug in. Just wire it up and mount it wherever instead of installing a new outlet box.

Make sure if you use the gun aim for the biggest target, practice with it.
Thank you everyone, I have done so much emdr/therapy/growing that I almost feel stronger because of it (was 7 years ago), but I will ALWAYS help people avoid ever going through that because the punishment never matches the damage, my rapist went to jail, but I spent YEARS with cptsd that led into ocd, the first 6 months i couldnt stop shaking, i couldnt sleep, I always, always hope to prevent that from happening to another woman, and obviously oakland is a very dangerous area, but we all know sick men exist everywhere. This is the brand Ive used for years. remember youre not doing any permanent damage, in certain immediate situations it can be very hard to use a knife or any weapon when it comes down to actually hurting somebody, pepper spray may hurt for ten/20 minutes, it may blind them temporarily and stop them and do what its supposed to do- but you are NOT hurting them, youre stopping them from hurting you! please stay safe out there <3
Got a 2 story house? Or is it a 1 story ranch?
If it is 2 story, go get one or more of those hornsfor football games and wait until they hit your house. Sneak a window open while waiting if the weather is good. When they bash your house, stick the horn out of the window and give a long blast, it will scare them into peeing their pants. Bonus points if there are 2 of you, one other goes to a different window and also blasts. Bonus points if you have a 100 000 lumen flashlight you can light them up with. You can also buy a 110 decibel sounder that you can wall mount ...
Really, go for multiple sirens, add some high output strobes ... say $500 or so of equipment and you can probably have them pissing their pants. You would just need to hook them up to a command switch so all you need to do is hit the switch =)
Creepy as fuck.
In my third apartment [I kept getting my housing changed at college, the university owned 10 or 12 apartment complexes it bought and used it for dorm space so students got shifted a round] the complex had a couple real creepy maintenance guys that would try to get in [at least the female housing, no idea about mens housing] We ended up buying those little door lock jigs and we each had one for the bathroom, our bedrooms and the front door. I did actually walk into our building to see one of the guys letting himself out of the apartment, and he tried to come back in when he was me claiming he was just leaving to get something from the truck that was not parked in our lot. Hm ..... obviously I refised to let him back in, telling him he could come back in 24 hours.
I actually own 5 or 6 of these now, keep one in my luggage, one in my messenger bag, one in my car and the rest around the house.
Its good you trusted your gut. Theres a book I highly recommend called The Gift of Fear (link below) its explains how your fear and instincts about other people can protect you by showing you how to recognize and understand the warning signs that criminals and violent people exhibit. our gut instincts dont come from thin air, we get that feeling because were picking up on something and the book explains why you should always trust your gut.

A podcast I listen to called my My Favorite Murder has a mantra which I live by: Fuck Politeness. "fuck politeness" is a reminder to remove yourself from situations where you feel uncomfortable, to listen to your inner alarms, and to never worry about someone's feelings when your safety could be at risk. women are socialized to always be polite to strangers and were told, we have to ignore our own feels, including feeling uncomfortable, and be polite because we will offend the other person if were not friendly and our feelings arent as important as making the other person feel welcome. but thats some backwards 1960s BULLSHIT. do NOT be polite, your feelings matter. listen to what your gut says when you feel unsafe.. any women would feel like something wasn't right if a man, whose a total stranger, was following them around their neighborhood and especially after he changed the direction he was walk to do so. So glad your okay
Reminder for every women here: Your personal safety is WAY more important then some random dudes feelings. Who cares if hes offended, you have no duty o obligation to force yourself into having interaction with someone who makes you uncomfortable.
I'm on Android too and have used this Call Recorder app...it downloads as "BlackBox" for years now. You can control who and when to record, it's optional to record all incoming and outgoing calls if you want (it starts recording a couple of seconds before so nothing is missed). I initially used it to record and share some voicemails, and honestly, it couldn't be easier. (Btw, I'm familiar with the option for Android, but I prefer this app way more and additional features offered.)
I honestly do agree with others that it was an automated messages telling itself to "run the program in x amount of minutes," but to make yourself feel better with added reassurance, you could set the app to record all incoming calls for a while, by the off chance you do need them as any type of proof.
Also, if I may add: The Gift of Fear is a good read and may be helpful to OP
That's so smart! I'm having a hard time finding smth like that in my price range on amazon.de tho :( what do you think of this one? security cam
Completely understand and there’s no shame in not reporting it, bc everyone is different in what they feel they can do! The last thing I want you to do is be hard on yourself, bc there are plenty of ppl in this world who are more than happy to do that for you! At least that’s what I tell my friends who are critical of themselves! 💕 This was not your fault!
I hope that you’ll find a way to seek out trauma therapy and in the meantime, this book may actually help hone your intuitive skills and protect you when moving forward in your daily life.
I feel that until you are secure in the knowledge that this could’ve happened to anyone and that you have the tools to recognize such dangers, you won’t find peace, which is all that I want for you, so understand that when I say this to you, it’s coming from a place of care/love.
I hope that you’ll give the book a read, bc I sincerely think that it might be able to help you in your healing process! Also, I’d like to reiterate what the PO said in this post, none of this is your fault and I’m so proud of you for having the strength and the courage to share this experience with everyone here.
As women, it’s our duty to protect and support one another, especially in our time of need and I pray that I have at least done that for you here. Remember, this incident has certainly taught you a valuable lesson, but you are strong and you don’t have to let it define who you are or how you live life moving forward!
Wishing you the best 💕✌️🍀
No; do not feel badly for calling them!
It’s common for people to internally downplay situations like these, only to find out later that if they had only spoken up, they might have been able to prevent it from happening to someone else. You did the right thing and I’m proud of you.
If you’re interested, you might want to read The Gift of Fear, which will help you to develop and hone your intuition when dealing with dangerous situations, much like the one you described in this sub.
Wishing you the best 🫶 Be safe, OP!
They’re these ones i believe. $60 when i got them (well, my brother gifted them) so looks like they are on sale. I like them well enough, have some issues with the rubber ear thingies cuz my ear canals are small i think.. anyway i’m pretty sure most bluetooths earbuds worth their salt will have the sound amplification feature
I am so sorry this is happening. I have no idea how you were careless. Seems to me like you were just living in your own home in your own way, and we are all entitled to that.
All the suggestions are good ones. I'd get dowels or something to put in her windows to keep them from being opened at all until this is figured out. Does she have a lock on her door? Something like this might be a bit of added security for your rooms?
Good luck!
I am also thinking at this point maybe he's just a control freak, but the age gap makes me wonder. I'm not even against some age gap for adults, but I find it odd hearing average average average followed by him doing something so not average for his age. Your mother probably enjoys the attention and feels
If you go home again I would take steps to protect yourself. Don't go if no one other than the two of them will be there. Stay with a friend nearby and visit home instead.
If you must stay there hide a cheap computer cam in your room to keep watch. They make some that are motion sensitive, not sure how inexpensive these days. Definitely cheaper than when I got mine a few years back. Invite a friend over when you need to shower, or go shower at a friend's house. Or better, have them stay there with you the entire time.
They also sell door locks only able to be unfastened from the inside pretty cheaply as well. I have this one and this one, either one of which works well for any doors as I travel a lot by myself.
I have sliding glass doors and put up window film for privacy! You can only make out shadows from outside.

I saw a comment that said you should keep an aluminum bat with you/around you. If you do that, keep a sock on it. That way, in the unfortunate case that you do need to use it, if he grabs it he'll be grabbing the sock and it'll slide off. I would look into a camera like other people are saying, maybe you could get a pen like this one and put it in a cup with other writing utensils on your window so it's not suspicious
this can be applied to ur window with water and leaves no damage! i’m sorry you have to deal with this :( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SNQ5Z67/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_EHYRP3WDEDH4A030X5MZ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
It sounds like you're taking all the precautions you really can. The only thing I can add is that your can get this lock for when you're home if it'll make you feel a little safer.
Great! Yes they're good for protecting yourself when exiting. Or wrapping a child in while you carry them to exit the building. Also excellent for just stopping a small fire completely by covering it.
Lol into aerosol spray cans of fire extinguisher as well. Buy more than you think you need. Keep one by the grill. Keep one on each floor of your house. They are super easy for anyone to use because you just spray. You don't need to read directions or worry about your brain not functioning in a serious situation to remember how to use it. They're cheap and small!

You can always make up little kit bags, containing items useful to a homeless person; and maybe a bottle of water and some protein bars. I keep one in my car so that I am able to provide to a person in need as I encounter them. It can be a fun project you and your friends can do, if you wish to make multiple kits. You could even solicit local business to see if they are willing to donate either funds or merchandise.
I use these nylon bags, which are a good size to contain a nice number of items and yet be easy to carry.
A really really really powerful one with a shit ton of lumens.

My grandma used to have this metal rod that had a rubber stopper at the bottom and the top went under the doorknob. That way if someone did try to open the door, the rubber bottom would stop them. I would look into getting one of those or something like it if possible!
It was similar to this one.

Probably the wisest thing you can do is try to ensure you have sufficient security measures in place in your home. I recommend an expandable door brace, a pressure pad alarm at a key place such as foot of stairs or beginning of hallway leading to bedroom, and securing all windows by drilling a screw on either side of the frames (leaving an inch out) -which will prevent an unlocked window from being slid up. It would be wise to have a weapon placed in each room of the home, within easy access but not readily visible to an intruder.
Cameras and buy a small handgun/taser/pepper spray. If you’re uncomfortable with the idea of a handgun and/or cannot afford, get a bat(metal). Also consider buying a door jam, useful if they try and break in with force. can get them for cheap on Amazon, this is the one I use - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002YUX8I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_WTFMSW4TRMJS9VAAQKGN

this is terrifying. as a fellow young female in Yexan, girl, don’t open the door for anyone you don’t know. I lived by myself for a few years and my dad bought me this fancy little door stop which I used on my front door. Please be sure to double check your doors and windows (given the season) are locked—sliding doors especially. And as others have mentioned, make a report with the police and contact who you’re renting from to see what’s up. Are you on the Nextdoor app by chance? If not, check it out and if so, check it out and see if your neighbors experienced anything similar. and quick shoutout to your dog! :)
I would definitely suggest getting a camera for the front door and maybe even one for inside also just in case. I installed an indoor security lock to my front door a couple of years ago because a creepy weirdo neighbor would break into my apartment when I wasn’t there and a couple of times in the middle of the night when I was sleeping. It’s a great lock and perfect for when you’re home since you can only unlock it from the inside. I’ve also installed a camera since then just for safety. You should also place dowels in all your windows as well for added security. I know this suggestion gets posted a lot when stories like this pop up, but you should read The Gift of Fear by Gavin de Becker. The first half of the book is especially good for reminding us to listen to the little voice in our head that tells us something isn't right. It's there for a reason. OP, I'm so glad you followed your instincts and got out of there.
You can think I'm crazy if you want, and you probably will
And honestly, I understand why, I get it.
But, if you wanna see something crazy, try this.
Go somewhere where there's a lot of people (a grocery store for example).
Open your phones Bluetooth and perform a scan...
You'll likely get just a few results...
A printer... Someone's phone, a nearby speaker...
Nothing out of the ordinary.
Now download this app, and perform another Bluetooth scan using the app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pzolee.bluetoothscanner
The results are mind boggling.
Your phone's regular Bluetooth scan is hiding/restricting results from you.
(The results in this case being devices that are broadcasting a signal that your phones Bluetooth scan is able to find)
The app... doesn't have those same restrictions, so it displays a different set of results.
A complete, set of results.
And there are A LOT...
When I did this myself at a local grocery store, my phone's Bluetooth scan found two MAC addresses, a Bluetooth printer, and someone else's phone.
When I performed the same scan with the app, the Bluetooth scan found 49 nearby MAC addresses, all of which were labeled "unknown" or "miscellaneous", and every single one of them had a unique and different MAC address.
(Meaning it was 49 different devices, not the same device being picked up 49 times)

My podcast is called Everything Fear, a weekly horror show. We have one true horror story per episode.
https://www.buzzsprout.com/1048270
My YouTube channel is called Truly Terrifying. It’s new but we do true horror story narration videos. Your story should be on a video on there sometime next week, and probably on the podcast in the next month.
The first one I had was a literal adjustable bar that went from the knob to the floor and blocked the door. It unfortunately was stolen so I got this as a replacement since it travels a bit better.
Maybe you can buy pepper spray?
You can easily get it online, at places like Amazon. I carry pepper spray on me every day, I use an oc spray called POM. I also, carry legally (fire arms). I know you mentioned you don’t have any weapons on, or near you but I believe pepper spray would be a good start. The one I’ve been carrying for the last year, it small enough to place in my pocket, it even had a tab on the top, that you can put it in your pocket, without it going off. Here’s what I’ve been using and would recommend it.
Also, I’m not sure how you feel about firearms, but I would look up your states laws. You may be able to get one, and carry it without anyone knowing you have one. If you need help, on recommendations on firearms I’d be happy yo help, I own a few compact guns, ones that are easy to hide. Hit me up if you have any self defense questions I love to help.
This is going into my home defense repertoire soon under the non-lethal category. Annoying, yes. Alarming, certainly. Here's one in action: https://youtu.be/QMxfMWp_WGY

You can get alarms for your windows/doors on Amazon for pretty cheap, also maybe throw a dowel in all of your window tracks.

Always trust your gut + pepper spray. This should probably be pinned to the top of every post.
I have had similar encounters, and they are always nerve-wracking (and I have years of Krav Maga and handgun training). There are a few inexpensive security measures you can do to beef up your front door. You can add a solid strike plate for the knob lock and dradbolt ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00D2K33NG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_KS2589QC98HCG8DVWVMF?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1) and use 3 or four inch wood screws to secure them. This makes it harder for someone to kick a door in.
There are also motion-activated lights that are battery-powered that you can hang outside your door. Installing a ring security camera is awesome--I am glad you did it! If you can, get a recording of a large dog barking. You can activate the Ring camera's communication system and play the recording to scare away a possible intruder.
I apologize if someone has posted all of this already (I read a lot of the comments, but not all). I have had way too many attempted break-ins and have been followed home a lot. I was house-sitting when I was 17 and the family's large, albeit super sweet, dog was the only thing that stopped the intruder from breaking in. They knew I was there. I have also been stalked/followed A LOT, pursued by a car full of men at the age of 13, and you know, what most women experience on a daily basis.
Don't be afraid to be loud. As women, we are taught to be seen and not heard. That was one of the biggest lessons I learned in my self-defense lessons. Be LOUD and be AGGRESSIVE. It will scare the sh*t out of a lot of attackers/weirdos if you fight back.
Here is a link to a self-defense school in Austin: https://www.fitandfearless.com/
It looks like they have a free introductory class, if you are interested.
Stay smart, kick ass, and take sh*t from no one.
I have a Lab/Pitt mix that is a huge baby, I rent an old home that gets the occasional mice. When I scream at seeing a mouse he will run and hide under the bed. I always thought he wouldn’t do anything if someone broke in.
We also have a 10.5 month old GSD who is twice the size and fenced in woods in our backyard. The other day, the mix didn’t realize the GSD was in the woods and took off after the “intruder” at a full beefed up shoulder sprint snarling the whole time. No altercation was had once it was realized it was his buddy. But it surprised the hell out of me!
I do also have my carry and conceal permit,an alarm system, and tasers/mace for walks if needed. Gotta say I picked up a pretty nifty taser two weeks ago on Amazon, the sound alone would be a deterrent, it would 100% slow someone all the way down. Here is the link if you’re in the US and not on the list of places they won’t ship to due to laws there. There are colors beyond pink. i have these on EVERY door and window in my house ... alarm companies are great BUT any damage that will be committed will be finished BEFORE any PO can get to me so i just want to be ‘ready and waiting’ when some mofo comes into my space.
i’ve used them for years and they are crazy LOUD and really inexpensive.
