Thanks for all the feedback so far! It's been really interesting seeing people share challenges similar to mine and what I'm creating Lottielab.io to solve.
Check here for the new UI updates and always happy to hear more thoughts: https://www.loom.com/share/5c8fd863aff242299af47695f90fa9fc?sharedAppSource=personal_library
For reference/ context:
I have been working a lot with Lottie UI animations and was finding it frustrating needing to use After Effects for quick edits so I built a tool that makes it easier to create, edit and implement Lottie animations in your code without After Effects.
I think there are a few things that are frustrating with AE + Lottie workflow:
- After Effects slows down the animation process with plugin errors and a steep learning curve.
- The collaboration process is broken, with files being shared online in various versions.
- Implementation of animations on different operating systems and devices is a pain.
Life can be much easier, so I built something that allows you to:
- Create animations with an intuitive tool just for Lottie - Forget all the AE errors and incompatible plugin issues.
- Integrate with your existing workflow. Instantly import and edit assets from tools like Figma, Illustrator, After Effects and existing animations from the Lottie marketplace.
- Collaborate with Designers, Developers and Product Managers on animation assets.
I am solely focusing on Lottie for now and would love any feedback really.
I purchase SSD drives. They seem to be fast enough, but I'm editing 4K video from them. You might be able to get away with a standard spinning hard drive if you aren't working with media which requires faster speeds.
You are very kind, thank you so much! The link that is on the Vimeo video will have the course info including the link. So that will always be correct. But currently, the course lives here (but is not live): https://gumroad.com/l/spacescapes
When its all up and running, I would love to hear what you think about that as well! I loved putting it together, so I am excited to get it in front of people.
First try? That's fantastic. Keep it up, and never stop learning!
My advice to you would be to put a lot of time into it and don't be afraid to rebuild something from scratch. Maybe find a nice color palette to go with this animation (check out https://color.adobe.com/ sometime to help get some ideas!) and get super cozy with the graph editor. Every time you add a keyframe, you should be using the graph editor.
my dad's a professor too, and I just spent last week walking him through a similar situation, so i'll just tell you the things i told him about
If you need help with graphics/intro:
My dad's workaround was just using what he knows, which was making a power point presentation and recording his powerpoint animations as supplements + VO. not sure what your content exactly is, but this might be the simplest solution?
If you have Camtasia, should be fine, there's also OBS which is an open source recording software I use sometimes.
As for putting it all together, my dad's been using davinci resolve, the free editing program by black magic, and if you need graphics that are a bit sleeker, I think resolve has some templates for graphics. (haven't used it myself, sorry)
Adobe was also giving out 60 days of creative cloud for free due to COVID, and I know their essential graphics in premiere has pretty good graphics templates to use, and you'll be able to drop them right onto your timeline while you put the content together. Not sure if you'll qualify for the 60 days, but I'd say it's worth a look?
hope any of that made sense. best of luck out there
Hey dude,
Please take all my comments as constructive critisim as I only hope that you can improve yourself.
First of all, try these scripts for better character animation: DUIK, Rubberhose and Joysticks & Sliders.
If you are really into character animation, please check out https://www.amazon.com/Animators-Survival-Kit-Principles-Classical/dp/086547897X/ as this is the ultimate bible for character animation.
I personally think your wizard's motion pace is way too fast. It would improve your video if he had some sort of personality, and also make him more important if his magic casting skills had some sort of value.
Let's go over the script.
We have a shiny happy kingdom. We dolly in to the highest tower in town and meet the wizard.
We see him, but what makes him special? Why do I care about him? He promptly magics us to egypt. Why? Can anybody else do that or is he unique? Why is this amazing? What makes this journey special?
Nothing, to say the least.
I am not saying you should change the script completely, but I think you should create a contrast. For instance make the kingdom dull and bleak, cloudy sky, lousy King, no space for imagination. But here comes the Wizard, that is able to teleport into other worlds, of which you can stuff to make your own world a better place. See? Create a problem, and solve it to advance your story.
Great art can't make a bad script work, much like a great script can be hindered by lousy art direction. They work together.
I'm sure you can make your work better, if you can just look objectively into your work from outside.
Cheers
