You all look for answers in shit that is answerable. Don't fuckin quit, and any book about BUDs is summed up in those words. It isn't something you read about in another guys experience. You want to read? Read something that leaves you contemplating your existence, not something that you think gives you a leg up on a course that will break you regardless. It's what you do when broken, not what you think you know going into it.
> Having just spent 3 months in Thailand I can honestly see how they would be sitting on their thumbs
This is dumb as fuck. Perhaps you spent 3 months in Pattaya fucking prostitutes since you think they're lazy? Thai people are work machines, and of course they are hard at work getting these people out.
> If you can get to them, you can get em out
Now this is even dumber. Rescuers entering the cave complex located in northern Thailand have to navigate dark, flooded tunnels for six hours to reach the team. It takes another five hours to return to the entrance.1
The boys are completely exhausted and it's dangerous to try to get out.
For any guys that want a look into MSgt John Chapman’s story, what controllers do, or just a good read I recommend buying this book.

C'mon man, you can buy that shirt for 10 bucks on Amazon - and this is this guy's second reddit post with zero verification...
I am by no means a god in the water, but here's the program that the guys training at Little Creek did during the summer of 2014:
https://www.scribd.com/doc/284121318/PST-Swim?secret_password=N1LTQ5DfaWayXAMzPUn0
Anywhere where it says drill, refer to this video: http://www.sealswcc.com/navy-seal-video/downloads/navy-seal-buds-training-swim-prep-download.html#.VhcWfhNVikp
Drill 1 is at 6:45 , Drill 2 is at 12:45. Do both with fins. I'm not sure I like how they describe drill 1, it's really you rotating from | body position to -- body position without using your arms. All about comfortability with the stroke.
When I started swimming with this group in 2013 I could barely swim a 50m lap without dying. I swam (uncompetitively?) in high school, but I was slow and fat and only swam because my water polo coach made me. 5-6 weeks later I was swimming an 8:30 on my PST - 290lbs, but being 6'4" definitely helped. Fastest I got down to was an 8:05.
Every single guy in the pool there made huge improvements to their swim times following this program, but a lot of it has to do with the coaching provided. If your technique sucks then you can only brute force your speed to go so fast. What's your 50m CSS time?
Edit: Some of the shit on there might be confusing, so feel free to ask questions. Also, please don't do any of the bobbing or breathing exercises that might be listed on there unless you have someone watching you specifically who is trained to save your life.
Edit 2: Any splits listed are my own personal splits, not necessarily what you should be shooting for. Times will also be different in a 25 yard pool vs the 50 meter pool I was in.
I am not trying to violate rule 1, and I am not advertising or anything. This is just what worked for me, and it may not work for everyone. I've been using Stew Smith's new tactical strength book. The workouts are a kick in the nuts but I'm definitely stronger than when I started.
Here's the Amazon Link: Tactical Strength: The Elite Training and Workout Plan to Build a Solid Foundation of Strength & Power
The Wealth of Nations, The Grapes of Wrath, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Brave New World, How to Win Friends and Influence People, Call of the Wild, The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, Dharma Bums, Lord of the Flies, The Metamorphosis, Into the Wild, The Thin Red Line, Animal Farm... I could go on and on and great books to read not only for motivation but just to exercise your mind.
Also, At Night She Cries, While He Rides His Steed.
Death of Superman, and Scar Tissue. Scar Tissue has been one of my favorites.
If you have Amazon Prime you can watch Rescue Warriors for free. The first 3 episodes are about indoc, the others cover EMT-P and PJU I think. There's also episode 2 of Surviving the Cut that shows ETD during indoc. There's the National Geographic series "Inside Combat Rescue" but that doesn't cover any of the pipeline.
“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” ― Viktor E. Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning
Mr. Frankl survived Auschwitz in case you are wondering exactly who the hell he thinks he is.
With respect to the quote at hand, I have a story from BUD/S on that. My best friend and boat crew mate Billy yelled and I think firmly believed this quote from the movie Dune:
“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”
He did this often and most notably right before we started Hellweek. It was a mantra for him and he was a solid student going through 1st Phase. On the second night after hygiene inspection, I could not get a full muster of the boat crew as we were about to go on to the next evolution because he was missing. An instructor informed me that he had just quit. It was a shock and frankly a devastating blow to me. He was my best friend, I was his BC leader, and he quit without saying a word to me. But what could I do? I shrugged it off and moved on.
My point is that Billy was essentially telling himself the same thing Elwood Babbit is saying. He was declaring something to be true and claiming sovereignty over himself that he could not be afraid. But the problem is that there is no power in that. Nothing real. So when push comes to shove, these kinds of proclamations cannot be leaned upon for support.
There are real spiritual forces at work that can be leveraged to perform above and beyond what is thought possible, but they do not come from within. Billy could have tapped into that or he could have followed Victor Frankl's advice.
Super interested in this stuff. Thanks for sharing. Here's the link to the full article for those who get off on this shit like I do
One of those detainees there, Gul Rahman, froze to death. A recently appointed Junior CIA Officer ordered for him to be naked from the waist down, chained to the floor of his unheated cell, and left overnight. It was around 36 degrees Fahrenheit that night.
The CIA Case Officer there was Matthew Zirbel. The CIA later basically said they should have appointed someone more experienced than a Junior Officer at the black site. "In 2005, the CIA’s 'Accountability Board' suggested that Zirbel be suspended without pay for ten days." He was never punished. You can read an article about him from The Intercept here.
I'll just add to the already stellar comments, that SEAL officers might see one or two active duty deployments and then are basically in charge of doing powerpoint presentations. DH Xavier's excellent book Breaking BUD/S is worth reading to find out the differences between the officer track vs. enlisted. His account is extremely granular on almost a day by day basis including OCS and what officers actually do in the teams. Although officers have a much better rate of success at securing BUD/S (because failure literally isn't an option) if you truly want to get some, you might want to go enlisted.

Can anybody recommend an app for workout tracking? I've been using Strong, but I'd rather have something that's closer to the MARSOC training program that includes stretching and stuff. I was gonna do 12 Weeks to BUD/S, but I don't have reliable pool access.
EDIT: The Actual MARSOC app is a thing. iOS Android
It's amazing. It doesn't let you change the workouts at all or add custom exercises so it's not exactly what I was looking for, but it's really, really well done.
Read the book, "Man's Search for Meaning" by Victor Frankl. It was written by a Jewish Psychiatrist that was in Aushcwitz during WWII. It is a very quick read and one of the greatest works written on this subject.
They're very different books and they should be treated that way. Read both for sure. Jocko did a podcast where he broke down 'The Art of War.' 'Meditations', mentioned earlier on the whiteboard, is a great book for developing personality traits that are advantageous, in my opinion, to the career we are pursuing.

First run back in 3 months since a tibial stress fracture with a consistent 6:40ish min mile pace. Feels good man. Big thanks /u/chistopherrunz for recommending the Sling Method. Anyways, here's a link to download the book for those in a similar position. It'll be up for a week: https://gofile.io/?c=LJXRel
Good day gents. I posted a while back about creating a better version of JN's strength and running program. I did create it and I just got done running it with some good results. The main improvements is that the weights you post on the first page automatically updates the weights on the following pages, as well as being easier on the eyes.

I use Google Docs to access the file on my phone., its saved as a .xlsx which means it will work with Excel aswell. HMU if you got any questions. Don't sue me Jeff.
How does the subreddit feel about Stew Smith, more specifically his Ranger/SF prep program?. It seems to be mostly body weight stuff, what else should you try incorporating?
And girl of the week is....
Literally perfect.
Follow this guide: https://www.docdroid.net/XVgJIdF/74056668-the-complet-guide-to-navy-seal-fitness.pdf.html
Read as much as you can, this is easily the best guide for BUDs from a former navy seal. You sound like you can start off in the intermediate exercises.
Some people on here probably think I'm gay for Stew Smith but his 12 weeks to buds got me from average pst 69/72/11 to an elevated pst 108/112/30 in 12 weeks.
Check out this thread for more ideas https://www.reddit.com/r/navyseals/comments/3s5lep/compiled_exercise_programs/
I think it still makes sense for people to join the military. Just don’t do so for idealism, and try to get as much out of it as you can if you are joining. Get educated. Get smart. I am older. I was in ROTC in high school. Many of my friends joined the military. Then the towers fell on 9/11 and shit got weird. It took my young energetic friends and turned them into older more disillusioned friends. But they didn’t gain any more clarity for their life after the military. Most of them just got PTSD and a lost decade in their life. The military will keep you busy, but it can’t give you purpose. You need that. You need the intrinsic motivation and joy for something in your life. It’s not all bad, maybe the military and service tempers you in your toughest years (18-25) and gives you the life experience to find your purpose. Just think long and hard about it all, please.
In the civilian world, I think training martial arts is a great outlet. Especially BJJ/MMA. I threw myself into technology and programming. Never stop learning. Never stop working out (physical). Athletics are very important to tame your energy. Find your path or life will find one for you and you may not like the result. Reactive vs proactive. I would also say finding your thing is a paradox. You can’t know if you will like some career until you do it and you can’t do it until you gain the skills to try it. There are ways around this. Cal Newport wrote a book about this: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IIMu1PGbG-0 — https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1455509124
Just some food for thought. Good luck out there.
I use these and I would recommend these. I don’t remember what size I bought but the size I did get runs a little large so I’m not sure if other sizes will also run large. You don’t need to be an expert swimmer before you ship just make sure you have a good PST time. You will get a ton of practice before you begin BUD/S.
Yes these fins are good. I use them. I would definitely practice with fins before you ship out it is important to get your ankles and hips used to swimming with them. I’m about 6’4 200 pounds men’s size 13 shoe and the 2XL fits me alright. Adjust your size accordingly.
Wish I hadn’t just deleted that comment, hindsight= 20/20.
To answer your question, I’m sure that the exercises would be effective. 1998 old? Bro...Just because it’s 23 years old doesn’t mean the exercises loose their juice!
Replying to your comment: 1) this is a brand new account with a single post/ comment...this one. I’m new to Reddit myself but I am under the belief that there is a karma requirement in this sub to stop this kind of thing. A new account simply spreading copyrighted information. 2) This book is still being sold on Amazon. It would make sense that a person looking to become part of a closed community like SOF would look to protect members intellectual property.
I hear books are a thing. You should read some. https://www.amazon.com/Grit-Passion-Perseverance-Angela-Duckworth/dp/1501111108
I used to have Asthma when I was younger myself, and when I got into my sport it was a challenge for sure.
Over time though, my cardiovascular system did build up and get really strong which helped, and I drank MASSIVE amounts of Water, which also really helped as I was pretty inconsistent before I became an Athlete.
One good resource you might find helpful (for even more general health improvements) that really worked for me is the book "Your Body's Many Cries for Water" by Dr Batmanghelidj, M.D.
(Heres a link https://www.amazon.com/Your-Bodys-Many-Cries-Water/dp/1452656975)
Short testimonial:
When I was a baby, I was so sick with Bronchitis they expected I would die in a week or two, and when I survived the Doctors said I would be on Inhalers for the rest of my life, would not be able to function without lots of Medication, and wouldn't ever be able to be physically active.
Fast forward a couple decades later and with massive help from my Mom (a Doctor herself) Books like the one I just recommended, and lots of hard work and perseverance, I have reached the National Level in my sport, won a couple Texas State Championship titles, competed with/against multiple World Champions, Record Holders, and Olympians, and more.
If I can do that in spite of the odds (with full credit due to everyone who helped me, without whom I would have failed) then I'm sure you can get well enough to make it!
Rooting hard for you mate!
I used one of these to do dips and weighted dips at home for years. It may or may not be uncomfortable on your shoulders depending on how big you are and how level the surface is that you're doing them on
Breath by James Nestor is relevant here. I'd also recommend watching Joe Rogan's podcast with him. Nasal breathing has been shown to be very beneficial with regard to performance/endurance.

I made it a priority to try and read everything from the back of Breaking BUD/s but was not able to due to some of the books being like $40+ and also I had quit. However, the books that I had read that were recommendations from BB were usually fantastic.
My favorites were:
The Finishing School - about SQT
The Warrior Elite (not listed) - about BUD/s, you'll find a good portion of The Warrior Elite in Luttrell's Lone Survivor
Men with Green Faces (not listed) - more like SEAL "fictional" literature and pretty hard to put down. Vietnam era.
Gates of Fire (not listed also kind of a downer when you learn that the Spartans also threw slaves into battle first but whatever)
Man's Search for Meaning (not listed - the author Victor Frankl was in a concentration camp and came to the conclusion that he was pretty much the master of his consciousness and could choose whether or not he was suffering)
Memoirs of a Navy SEAL was alright but definitely more enjoyable than something like Brandon Webb's The Red Circle or Mark Owen's No Hero. From my critical perspective at least. I got sick of reading more recent and "modern" SEAL books cause they just read like cash grabs.
Someone recommended this vest to me. I haven't tried it, but I like how it has smaller weights that you can add, to make it more customizable. Instead of just one giant weight
Acer Chromebook. Fucking love this little guy. Its linked to google drive so it keeps everything there. Chrome OS means no games to distract me. I just update my sheets for my training log.
Give the leatherman tread a look I love mine and you can fly with it.
There's a 2nd TBB book that is focused on conditioning - would suggest looking into it if you like the strength part of TBB
Dive socks might work but in my opinion would be very uncomfortable since the fins would fit extremely loose, you will probably lose kick power as well. You are gonna want something like this.
Anyone here read "Worth Dying For?" I was just browsing Amazon, it seems like it actually raises some good questions, the author definitely uses his SEAL title to promote the book but it doesn't seem like it's centered around his experience specifically as a SEAL. If nobody here has read it I'll pick it up and tell you guys what I think.
Fuck yeah man, thats great exactly what I wanted to see. I haven't read most of the philosophy or any of the climbing or finance. Appreciate you taking the time to post this, greatly expanded my to read list. Of you liked Gates of Fire, I'd highly recommend Pressfield's the Virtues of War follows Alexander the Great's rise and conquests.
http://www.amazon.com/Scubapro-ScubaPro-Frameless-Mask/dp/B011HLF488 might be a little pricey but they make a good product, I've had this mask for 3 years and I love it.
As far as fins go, you'll use Scubapro jet fins at buds so you can train with those. I personally use some surface fins - lot more flex, little faster than jet fins and less stress on your ankles. Kind of an intermediate between swiming without fins and swimming with jet fins.
Depends on what kind of swimming you want to do in regards to clothing. Want to create more drag and more work? Wear pants. Swimming for time? Wear jammers or a speedo.
Definitely do - but make sure you don't get Magnesium Oxide. It's the cheapest, but it has a bioavailability of like 4%, so you'll be taking literally 10 times as much as you would with a glycinate or chelated form. Grab this kind for another ~$6 and you'll get 5-10 times the bang for your buck. Don't get the liquid, it'll make you barf.
Okay
Eyelashes protect from debris, no body wants debris in their eyes.
No retries, unless you get medically rolled. If you quit, you have to spend the remainder of your contract scraping paint off of ships. Read Breaking BUD/S, it gives a decent understand of what the process is.
Okay
Upvote for the one about Adam Brown.
It's called Fearless and it can be found here. His story is one that inspires me and pushes me everyday.
You can generally pick up a pair of bottoms at your local ranger surplus store for not too much money. As far as boots go, you can just wear any pair you like. If you are really serious you can pick up a pair of the same ones you will use at BUD/s found here:
Bates Men's 8 Inches Tropical Seals Durashocks Work Boot,Black,M US https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000G5UF0O/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_3qYyvb1ZCEBFF
The nice thing about this option is that when you do end up going to BUD/s you can just take these with you.
I'm not sure how stringent they are about boots and bottoms though. I used to go to the Frederick, MD and Baltimore, MD events all the time with shorts and running shoes and nobody said anything. It's only at major events that I find that they are actually stringent about it.
Hope this helps!
When I first started taking analysis courses, my head was spinning. But this was because I wasn't very good in logic and set theory. Once I got good at that, and I started understanding how to proofs worked, it wasn't a problem. You'll realize pretty quickly that a lot of problems are proved in similar ways, and you'll get to a point where you can look at a theorem or exercise and just know how the proof is going to go.
This book helped with proofs; this one with analysis in general.
