I've ridden from New Haven to New York twice. It's a decent route, but you may have to go on the boston post road for at least 5ish miles, which has a lot of traffic but I haven't had any close calls.
It's possible to bike through bridgeport and stamford without going through any "sketchy" areas.
In total, it's about 80 miles to harlem.
Check out my strava activity, assuming you have an account you can click the wrench on the left sidebar and then click "create route" to create your route from my activity and modify it to your liking.

The roads from Fairfield to Norwalk on that activity are perfect by the way so make sure you follow those if possible.
Hey everyone! In addition to the Capture The Flag event we're having tomorrow (Wednesday), we're also playing Soccer on Saturday!
The goal is to play from 10:00 - 12:00, then go watch the Madrid v Liverpool game at Christy's.
Everyone's welcome to come play as long your main goal is to have a good time. We basically just don't want anyone going full Bradley Cooper from Wedding Crashers.
I'm aiming to do an event or two every week until it gets unbearably cold outside. If you can't make anything this week, but want to hear about what we have in the works, here's what you can do:
Hope to see y'all on the field!
I don't know if either of you are into sports, but I'm spinning up a recreational sports league that looks more like a gym class (different sports) than one league playing soccer for a few months straight.
It's more focused on fun than competitiveness and we'd love to have you come hang out!
Hey there! I don't know what's going on that's specifically volleyball, but I'm trying to start up the New Haven Nerd League where we get people together once or twice a week to just play sports for fun. We're planning a few volleyball events for the summer and we'd love to have you.
Just head over here (and download the app if you're on mobile) then sign up for our New Haven Nerd League group on OpenSports. We'll be posting all of our events there and I'll be sure to invite you to our future events.
I think you'll be fine anywhere, but have you considered Airbnb - looks cheaper than what you'd pay for a hotel.
You can park on most streets without a permit though many have meters and time limits. Parking is free on Sundays. There are many affordable parking lots throughout the city so parking is not a big problem generally.
Walking at night really depends; in any decent area you're unlikely to be attacked/robbed, but the smaller you are the more of a potential target you'll be. East Rock is a wealthy neighborhood but people still get mugged there occasionally. You'll probably be able to tell when you're in a bad area just from environmental clues. New Haven isn't that dangerous as far as cities go, but since you've never lived in one I would avoid walking around isolated areas at night until you get a feel for the area. If you are walking home at night you can always try to take roads that are well-lit and busy (even if it means a longer route).
Your bike should be brought inside because it will absolutely be stolen eventually.
It's easy to meet people in New Haven. Check out Meetup.com for some groups in the city, and just drop into bars to hang out and talk. If you have a specific interest (hiking, games, sports, etc) you can google up events. I hate Facebook but there are tons of NH events on there. Going to shows is an easy way to meet people so check out small venues like Cafe 9 and the State House. If you like to party, Crown Street is the weekend drinking street for college kids (it's generally a shitshow imo but no judgement).
Lastly, don't take it personally if some people don't want to chat - we're not the midwest after all. It might take you a little time to meet friends but if you tell people you're new to the city many will at least be happy to tell you their two cents.
If it's raining, there's going to be an awesome show at Neverending Books on State St: Robin Aigner, Serena Jost and An Historic (facebook link), and that's BYO.
When the vaccine starts getting more widely given and it gets safer, I plan on bringing the New Haven Nerd League back to life.
It's a group of folks that does different pickup sports every week or so. Basketball will definitely be in the rotation.
Edit: Since it seems like a lot of people are going to Christy's REALLY early for the match, we'll be playing from 10:00 to 12:00, NOT the initially advertised 12:00 to 2:00.

July 13 is like two weeks away! If anyone wants to hang, my band is playing tomorrow (Thursday June 30) at The Outer Space in Hamden on Treadwell Ave. If any Ents wanna get down, introduce yourself! I'm the lead singer of Lion's Teeth. Show starts at 8pm. I am currently hanging with someone I met from reddit. I think these meetups need to be way more frequent with way less planning. I can confirm at least 3 redditors going to this show already so hopefully others can join us!
Definately the former, people come to our nights to dance to solid music they probably haven't heard before and hang out with a chilled crowd. In a night we'll play everying from 80's electro to disco, funk, tech-house etc etc. We're serious about our music but not snobish. You can get an idea of the sort of music I play at https://hearthis.at/peludo/ It should give you an idea of how the club nights go. Lots of fun bootlegs and basslines :-)
I don't live in New Haven but I've looked into this because I visit regularly (and play chess). Look up the West Haven meetup on meetup.com (I think Thursday nights). Also apparently in the summer that group plays on the West Haven boardwalk. Some of the same folks run regular tournaments in the area too.
I bought this pump online for $30 two years ago and it's still going strong. Used it easily 20+ times on my car and friends'.
On sale for $24 (yellow one). You'll never have this problem again.
I only plug this because it's relevant to the conversation, but I did a tee shirt design and put it on Amazon. Pride in the one thing most of New Haven can agree is pretty good: Apizza :)
Actually this reminds me, a couple of years ago (during the pandemic) I made a shirt design to celebrate New Haven Apizza (the only thing in New Haven that universally people agree to love). I have a small account to sell designs on Amazon and it's been my best seller (which isn't saying THAT much as I probably make less than $20 a month selling shirts on Amazon.) Still, if anyone is interested in seeing it, it's here:
If you’re looking for hikes within town, West Rock and East Rock. For West Rock, there are several paths up for hiking other than the car road. From the baseball field, there’s a steeper red marked trail and a less steep blue and yellow trail: Here’s a map for the start of the less steep blue and yellow trail, when it joins at the top, follow along to the right to reach the summit. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/connecticut/westville-feeder?p=27435971
Also second lake Wintergreen within West Rock Park. It’s scenic and a flat easy walk, maybe 1.5 miles around. You can kayak and otherwise unmotorized boat on the lake and fish. For East Rock, the main path up should be pretty easy to find from the car road, English Drive, follow white blazes to intersect the “Giant Steps,” has a steep last 5 mins but otherwise it’s literally stone steps.

Actually this article was published right before Trump's anti-stimulus tweet. AA ended up extending the HVN flight cancellations through December 2. So, if there isn't another airline bailout - I'd say these flights are not coming back soon. Which really sucks for me since I moved here from Charlotte and need to get back there soon to finish moving out of my old place and dispose of some leftover cars I have.

I'd also have him check out Scratch (scratch.mit.edu).. this is where my son started. It is drag-and-drop blocks, but it really does a good job teaching the fundamentals of development. There are some amazing projects out there, and the "code" for each one is open, so users can borrow and learn from others. It seems like a pretty good, supportive community.
Honestly if you're not against a daytrip to NYC for some if your Xmas shopping, many of the old delis/ bodegas here have them. We even have shops dedicated to just old school candy.
Economy Candy is a giant candy store where you can buy by the pound. https://economycandy.com/contact-us/
But also this is $20 and individually packaged: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002KGQWYA/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_TTP30WM1S6HGRWP2JGN6?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
(I go back and forth between states but am a New Yorker and sees gummy pizzas every few days.)
Yikes - the link is already dead. I pulled up a previous page from the Archive.org's wayback machine but not sure how up to date it is (from 2013).
Best bang for the buck, I'd argue would be getting the Groupon for Oak Haven ($39 for a $60 worth of food and drink): https://www.groupon.com/deals/oak-haven-table-bar-3-6
I feel Rudy's would be cheaper than Barcelona, and usually nice to talk with someone at.
You don't have to go to Pizza and Beer to keep in inexpensive (that said, DeLegna is a great place for a nice pizza and a drink). There's a lot of decent but not over the top restaurants in New Haven:
Yeah they're not Union League, Olea, Barcelona, Zinc, L'Orcio, etc. but they're all good (if this wasn't the foodie paradise that New Haven is, they'd be pretty well respected)
You trying to do handball or netball?
I (occasionally) run a group called New Haven Nerd League - where we get folks together once a week in the warmer months for some low stakes pick up games. We have jerseys, flags, balls, and stuff. I'd be more than down to do a handball week this year.
Edit: Join here, and it should ping you when I start setting things up: https://opensports.net/@NewHavenNerdLeague
Hey /u/Mlujan90! I'm actually looking at spinning the New Haven Nerd League up again!
Basically just one or two get togethers a week that are just random pickup games. Sometimes soccer, sometimes ultimate, sometimes capture the flag. Just an excuse to get some people together and exercise! The page that ^^ links to should have a button at the bottom of the page to download OpenSports on iOS/Android. Gonna start planning some stuff soon.
Round three!
We're trying to get together a group of fun seeking people for a semi competitive game of dodgeball. I know we all played different versions of dodgeball growing up, so we'll be playing a few different versions on Tuesday. Full disclaimer: we're using actual playground balls; not gator skin ones.
We'll meet up at the basketball court near the playground and baseball fields at the south end of English Drive in East Rock Park.
The New Haven Nerd League's guiding principle is just "don't be a jerk." We want to get a group together once or twice a week to build a community around fun based (rather than competitive) recreational sports. Everyone is more than welcome to come play as long your main goal is to have a good time. We basically just don't want anyone going full Bradley Cooper from Wedding Crashers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IGZG_HhC0o).
If you're interested in hearing about future events, go ahead and join the New Haven Nerd League OpenSports group (https://opensports.net/@NewHavenNerdLeague). We'll be sure to throw you invitations to anything and everything we do going forward!
Would NOT suggest ordering something like this

Cool!
Let me clarify, because there are a million DND5e books and they are all kind of confusing.
5e has three core rulebooks:
The Players Handbook - which covers making characters, and the rules for the game in depth.
The Dungeon Master's Guide - which covers advice for worldbuilding, planning and balancing encounters, and magic items, with lots of tables and references.
The Monster Manual - covers the stat blocks and some basic lore for a bunch of different NPCs.
These three books retail for $50, so Wizards of the Coast decided to release a box set to get people interested in the game called "The Starter Set".
https://www.amazon.com/Dungeons-Dragons-Starter-Wizards-Team/dp/0786965592
The Starter Set has dice, an abridged rulebook, some premade character sheets, and a prewritten adventure "The Lost Mine of Phandelvar" with all the monster stat blocks included. This set had everything to actually play the game.
A year or two ago they released a second box set called "The Essentials Kit" which is the one you are getting. The essential kit has a similar abridged ruleset, except this book includes rules for making player characters (as opposed to using premade characters as in the Starter Set). They only include 5 classes: Fighter, Wizard, Rogue, Cleric, and Bard, and they all only cover level 1-6. This set also includes dice, some handouts and a map, and a premade module called "The Dragon of Icespire Peak". This set is also enough to sit and make characters and play the game.
You don't really need the Dungeon Masters guide to play the adventure that comes with the "Essentials Kit". The DMG is only really useful when combined with the other two core rulebooks for making your own adventures.

That and a dungeon master guide

can't tell if this post is trolling but it sounds like your "improvements" are just trying to push people out. the world is a complicated place and I certainly don't have the answers but it is true that everyone has a unique story
Can you splurge on a 3 quart instant pot? $59.99 and you can cook practically anything in it.

Then all you'd need is a toaster oven?
Amazon link for those interested. Personally, it sounds right up my alley and I think I'll check it out once the semester is over.
