When I ate before class, I would usually just have a banana or fig bites... but now I work out fasted and I feel much lighter and energetic. I always thought I had to eat something beforehand to "fuel" my workout but really my dinner from the night before seems to have enough residual calories to do the trick... now when I eat before a workout I feel barfy and heavy.
We bought an OTF tread and rower from our studio. I googled our tread model and was able to look up how to check mileage and belt life on the tread screen. I went in and checked all the treads at my studio before I picked ours! (Check out this video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/DNJs5IPF17o)
The tread also requires a different voltage. We bought an adapter on Amazon. We plugged the adapter into a regular outlet but make sure not too much is running on the circuit while using the tread. We haven’t had trouble. Adapter: Conntek 30129 15A to 15/20A Plug Adapter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DVE8SCE/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_c_api_i_Tfi8Cb2S4PSQ3
We were able to move it on a trailer but others were using pickup trucks. Someone rented a truck but the tread is too wide to go up the ramp. You’ll need to lift it. It’s heavy!!! Per the website it’s almost 600 lbs but good news... it has wheels under the front and can be rolled. Our doors were not wide enough so the top had to be disassembled but it seemed pretty easy as long as you have a little electrical/handyman knowledge. I think my husband has to use an Allen wrench.
I hope this helps!! Happy running!! ♂️♀️
What time do you go to bed? I've been doing 5ams/ others before OTF since 2015. I make sure I'm in bed with everything prepared by 8 to 830pm. My alarm goes off at 4:10 am I am allowed one snooze. Clothes are laid out and it's a no brainer. Some people can't do a snooze but I heard there is an alarm clock that will roll off your night stand on to the floor so you have to get up. Don't know if you need something that extreme?

In the beginning I would track on excel or on notes on my phone how many days/classes I would go to and reward myself with something I wanted after a month. Now my friends and I share our apple activity on our watches and that is a good motivator to be ahead of them before they even wake up. There are also apple watch group challenges each month. Ultimately it is all up to you to motivate yourself.
Also give yourself some grace. Sometimes with a stressful week/day, a day off and extra sleep is essential so make that decision before you go to bed.
Set a one month goal and put it on your bathroom mirror where you can see it everyday as a constant reminder before bed and when you wake up. Remember YOU GOT THIS!!
Rockin’ Green Active detergent. It’s a game changer! Don’t use fabric softener at all or those scent beads for the washer. Soak in this initially then just use as laundry detergent after and going forward. I do pre wash with it and add an extra rise. It’s truly a game changer. No more stank.

It really varies per person!
If it’s your first benchmark, I might find a pace between your base and push, hold the pace and finish it. In the last .2 miles, if you feel like you have anything left, go all-out.
If you feel like doing some planning and push yourself to try to match your 1-mile time at the big box gym, you can use the benchmark planner (https://coda.io/@kennywong/otf/1-mile-run-7) to see what pace & strategy you will need to hit/beat that goal.
As others have already said, if it’s your first benchmark, aiming to complete it and establish your baseline is ❤️🔥!
Good luck and have fun on Monday!
Our benches have legs that fold under, so they can be high or low. I think this is what most studios have now, I’ve never been to one without this bench.

It takes some fortitude to roll your own workouts at the house, but for a woman you can probably buy a starter set of dumb bells, a med ball, and some resistance bands for the cost of a month membership.
If your studio is closed another month, a bench is currently about the cost of a month of premiere membership:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LYFX9WX?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_dt_b_asin_title
My studio was closed for about three months and rolling those costs into equipment, I have most of what I need to emulate workouts by now (except a treadmill or a rower). The bonus part is that when you are rolling your own workout, you are allowed to never pick pistol squats.
If you were like me, you never thought you could do the things you wound up doing in the studio. Well, this is just one more of those, you can get your sweat on.
I got these for my husband because earbuds always fall out. He is a distance runner and he says they stay put and work really well.

P.S. You can find the definition of peers by expanding the How do you define peers? section.
I can't speak for leather (because Texas heat/sun + leather seats = burned ass/legs), but I bought this stuff, Totally Awesome cleaner at the dollar store (or amazon, apparently) and HOLY MOTHER it works. My seats were AWFUL. Combo of 2 years of OTF sweat PLUS dirt from the barn/riding horses plus general eating/drinking and spilling stuff and my seats look brand spanking new. It's insane. It did take me 2 rounds to get everything, but even after 1 round of cleaning I was impressed and about to leave it at that.
I got this one from Amazon, it is just like the ones at OTF and I love having it at home. I can repeat the body weight exercises and have been using it to do step downs which has really helped my knees.

I have the WORST ROWER BUTT, to the point the scab was bleeding THROUGH my leggings and onto the towel I was using. I’ve tried the butt creams (didn’t really work & stained my Lululemon leggings). I don’t like the idea of using the pad’s on the wait floor bc what if the weight floor person needed it? && I didnt want to have to walk over there everyday.
So, my life saver? Is this rower pad on Amazon. Best $20 I’ve ever spent and it’s not too bad carrying around (I carry a towel, what’s one more thing?) rower pad
There's an interesting, fun to read book that recently came out that discusses human endurance and the mind-body relationship. One thing the author says is that few actually meet or achieve the fullest physiological potential that our body can do - we usually have a little more to give. When Im doing something physically taxing - OTF or otherwise - I remember that.
Amazon link to book: Endure: Mind, Body, and the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance
Sometimes I work out at noon and then don’t have time for a shower. I got these big body wipes just for this: Post-workout wipes

Was having same issues and bought a different brand strap from amazon and has been fine ever since

I use this one from amazon- AmazonBasics High-Density Round Foam Roller | 18-inches, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00XM2MXK8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_WrKtBbVZZ80AQ
And this video is a good place to start because there are definitely wrong ways to foam roll- https://youtu.be/t4A523-O5uk
I sweat a lot too and I always had issues with finding the perfect fitting head band. I am an Amazon shopper myself so I always felt like it was hit or miss on finding the right size head band...that is until I found the "head tie headband".

Now I just find myself staring in the mirror, mentally preparing for the class by tying on my headband while walking on the treadmill.... Kinda of corny but I am able to place the band where I want and make it as tight as I need and it keeps the sweat at bay.
Congrats!!!

Check out eBay, Poshmark, Craigslist, etc. You can usually find them for 50% or more off the OTF price. Personally, I love my chest strap over the forearm monitor. I purchased this replacement strap from Amazon and it is super comfortable and I had no technical issues.
I added the data to 1-mile benchmark planner (https://coda.io/@kennywong/otf) in case you want to see how you did against your peers based on your demographics.
Make sure you choose a Benchmark Date in the Filters!
Our friend /u/BilingualAlchemist has got this sweet calculator https://coda.io/@kennywong/otf
Also, you can divide 60 by your desired time (converted to decimals) to get your set it and forget it pace. 😁
I purchased this one. I haven’t had any issues with leaking and I like that I can use it with the straw or pour-spout. Not sure if the leash counts as a handle for you, though.

I got these from Amazon. There are four different lengths, depending on how short you want to go. I didn't get the longest, but the next one up. I liked the first pair so much, I bought two more.
I sweat... A LOT. I've often just had disposable gym clothes because I could never get the stink out consistently so once they hit that wall I had to get rid of them.
I've tried lots and have been very successful using Hex and my clothes stay stink free and the fabric stays nice as well.

I have a few stretch ropes stashed around my life. I'll knock out time on those usually within 30 mins of class.
But really just hit the big muscle groups.
So important to remember to stretch. I miss the long stretch sessions we used to have at OTF.😢
Yes to showering in your clothes and wringing them out good.
I also then put the wet clothes in a special bag which helps protect my trunk from stinking in the 100 degree summer heat.
hey there! I would get something with carbs - so that way you crush your workouts!! https://www.amazon.com/Orgain-Organic-Replacement-Chocolate-Packaging/dp/B00RWWOKHI here's an example. Look up "meal replacement shakes" as opposed to protein shakes
BANG coffee/preworkout drinks. They’re available at gas stations and normal grocery stores where I live.
Or here is a multi-pack from Amazon:
I have these on a recommendation from a personal trainer I see occasionally. Word of warning fabric bands are tougher then the ones at OTF. But they also don’t roll up weird which is a positive!

This happened to me a few times after about 3 months after getting a chest strap. I ended up getting a new chest strap on Amazon which is a little different - and Ive not had the problem since.
I highly recommend this strap from Amazon: Polar strap
Under Armour Fly-By Capri. They're cheap (usu less than $50, often less than $30 when on sale, which they often are on Amazon), have one pocket that fits a phone perfectly, are relatively high waisted, and otherwise rock. I have about 10 pairs in a variety of colors. Love them.
So I know you asked about leggings, but since you have a headphone cord that you're worried about, I think you should check out lululemon's pace perfect bra. There's a pocket in the back of the bra for your phone. There is also a company on amazon that sells a great knockoff here
I would also 100% recommend getting bluetooth headphones. You can find some for pretty cheap on Amazon. I have some, and I wear lululemon fast and free crops and vs knockout crops all the time and put my phone in the pocket of those.
Being from overseas, I'm not into boxer shorts as underwear - Way too much extra, loose fabric that too often ends up where it shouldn't be. So I wear briefs that I buy off Amazon - these are a very light, cool fabric - They keep all bits in their place with no chafing, almost feels like going commando - without any risk of wardrobe malfunctions - but be careful not to get the really brief-briefs - I bought some of those by mistake one time and well, there ARE limits ;o)
That sucker should be very tight! If you tighten before every class and you still have issues, you can purchase a replacement band on Amazon. I love mine.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RIAKSGQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_u0fsCbWSTK2Z7
I used to have the same issue until I bought this strap. It looks like this one is backordered right now, but just search amazon, there are a bunch just like it. Once I switched, I never had the issue with my monitor getting "stuck" halfway through class again.

Yes! If you haven't already, verify your nutrients are 100%. Even if you're eating plenty, tracking for 3-4 days can reveal any deficiency patterns (https://cronometer.com/). When I had this feeling, I was low on magnesium and iron...low potassium and B12 can also trigger extreme fatigue and nausea.
Did you start at a certain pace and have to pull back or did you hold it and just didn't get as far as you wanted? I got 1.48 and I did 7.4MPH and then went to 8.5 for the last minute. If you could do 7.5MPH with an AO of 8.5MPH for 1 min at the end - you should beat your previous time with 1.5miles. I used the calculator on this sub to plan my strategy. For me a consistent pace with an AO at the end feels the best to me. https://coda.io/@kennywong/otf
OK! So it's here: https://coda.io/@kennywong/otf/dri-tri-run-33
I only have time to get the Steady strategy added, and I'll add the other strategies later tonight/over the weekend when I have some time (Turns out it's a bit more complex than I originally imagined. 🙏)
Thanks again for the amazing idea u/QuintessentialK!

That's it!
You can also adjust demographics filters to get more accurate comparison based on your age, height, etc etc.
Enjoy!
P.S. You can find the definition of peers if you expand the How do you define peers*? section.
According to the CMIYC pace calculator, if you start at 10.0, you would need to continue adding .1 until 11.8 to achieve 4 miles. Seems like a lot extra speed after 11.0 just to get to 4 miles!
Yeah, PW's distance goal is half of what jogger's &runner's
You can find the details if you...
Hope this helps!
Alternatively, if you did pull the trigger on quitting OTF, you could replicate similar gains by doing a 15 minute 2000m row followed with a starting strength program (5x5, you can download a phone app called Stronglift 5x5 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.stronglifts.app which is excellent) and then fill a remaining hour with steady state or interval cardio of your choosing of you need extra caloric burn.
Its not too hard to get the same results while spending less money. If you have a fitbit, use a phone app to track how often you are in HR4 or HR5 zones, do the 2000m row every day followed by Stronglifts 5x5 which automatically structures a weight floor program for you, and then do tread/bike/elliptical for however long you want afterwards.
The biggest benefits I see to OTF is ease of data tracking, they figure out the workout program for you which keeps it interesting and low effort (makes it enjoyable which is important to stick to it) and the payment/scheduling incentivizes you to do it or else you feel like it's a waste.
Being able to do zero prep/planning to your training and just being able to shut your brain off and follow directions is a really helpful tool. Is it worth $180? Probably not if you are trying to thrift and have the right knowledge to recreate the effort.
THIS!! I just bought it a few months ago and I'm IN love! It's beautiful and does everything you want it to! Plus it's only $30! It's large enough for everything when you unsnap the sides. It fits over my shoulder. Love love love

I also am a caffeine drinker so I mix in a crystal light energy water packet for the caffeine 🤣
I use Vibes (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B018WPOQSG/) and I've been really happy with them.
Along with just loud music - I have hearing damage from work (and personal activities in the past), and these not only cut the noise a little bit, but make it way easier to understand what the coach is saying.
I have been struggling with wrist pain for awhile now. Did the whole NSAIDs, rest, physical therapy and MRI. Nothing seems to help, so I've been modifying. For plank low rows, I will do them from the knees or use one dumbbell switching arms, never putting any weight on the dumbbell.
I will use my knuckles for some exercises, and I will always use a mat of some kind for any wrist work. That sucked during COVID time, because I would sometimes be the only one with a mat out. Now they have the ab dolly pads out, yay 😁
I have a weight lifting wrist wrap I use, and will immediately apply heat on the painful wrist afterwards.
I also use a wrist brace at night, and when I'm working on the computer.
For me, the wrist wrap/support makes the class bearable, and keeps my wrist aligned. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0749G1LNH?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
It's a constant struggle and has made me question if OTF is right for me... it's amazing how much we crawl on the floor 😬 anyway, you are not alone!!
I wear all kinds of styles. Mostly, I like my muscles staying warm so I'm wearing leggings and long-sleeve shirts even. But I'll mix in plenty of non-legging and short-sleeve days and even a tank-top once a week.
I get a ton of compliments when I wear my tank-tops. Yes, I have good upper body def but also I think it's cuz I only wear them once a week at most (5-7 classes per week). If I didn't have upper body def I wouldn't wear them ever. But definitely a you do you thing.
One prob I have to watch for is material in the armpit area that's why I don't like muscle shirts. It gets rashy.
Also, you can get some pretty funky tank-tops for theme days.
I use these! They are combo open gloves and wrist wraps. I use them for the rower and the floor
One of our coaches plays music way too loud 80-100db, which will damage hearing. I’ve talked to him about to no avail. I wear Hearos ear plugs.
I ran for years before joining OTF. As you said, it is very likely your shin splints were caused by overuse. Ive tried using compression sleeves, socks, etc and they do help some, but I never got true relief / prevention until I strengthened the muscles supporting the ankle and shin.
I got one of these balance disks and routinely use them to strengthen the little muscles in your ankle/lower leg, calf. I highly recommend one of them.

I use a protein powder called Raw Grass Fed Whey. I've never seen it outside of Amazon. There is also an organic version that is a few dollars more expensive. I make a shake with one scoop of this powder (21 g protein), one banana (for some carbs), +/- a teaspoon of cacao powder, ice, and water. All I taste is banana (+/- the cacao).
There's a great book about intermittent fasting, by Kristine Varaday, ”The Every Other Day Diet", with tons of research and facts about what it does to your body. Very interesting read.

Short story, yes, you can easily work out in a fasted state.
You can buy better/nicer (and way cheaper!) ones on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Fit-Simplify-Resistance-Exercise-Instruction/dp/B01AVDVHTI/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1517002085&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=fitness+bands&psc=1
I felt the OTF ones at my studio and they were super cheap and basically garbage. Makes sense, since they have a ton and will just keep replacing them.
I've been getting weighed/measured by the InBody machine at one of the local Max Muscle stores nearby, and love having this information. I recently bought this scale on Amazon (Amazon's Choice) and am loving it, and the app that accompanies it so far!
These were on sale on Amazon a few months ago and I really like them. The key is the silicone strip that keep them from slipping.

had this problem - there are potentially two solutions - use some conductive gel (like they use for ultrasounds) on the sensor buttons that insert into the chest strap.
Alternatively, as i had to do recently, buy a new chest strap - the little holes become looser over time so the connection is poor, even with the gel.
Your friendly SA's might have some gel, otherwise available from Amazon - literally enough for 100 ultrasounds or a lifetime at OTF.

I heard a rumor that OTF was developing a bluetooth device that would allow you to sync a Garmin or Apple watch to measure your HR during workout but I have no idea when/if that would go on sale.
What you should be able to do now is download this OTF app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.orangetheoryfitness.orangetheory&hl=en_US and use an Otbeat HR device to record your workout. You can give the app permission to sync data into the Samsung health app. You would not wear your Garmin during class with this setup.
I know this isn’t what you asked for but this is my understanding of the best alternative currently available. If anyone has any other setups that work well I would love to hear about them!
I use these

Asked a family member who is an audiologist and they said either pair would be good for helping save my ears
put a light on your room on a timer. I set mine to turn on 30 mins prior to my alarm. It cost me $4 last year. Since it is near Christmas they are everywhere.
I bought some of these in 2017 and they still are in great shape…literally five years of OTF, soccer, and outdoor running later.

So here is an example. I bought it but haven’t tried it yet. There are some complaints about the bands separating but honestly, the original band that came with my OTBeat Burn split/did the same exact thing within a short timeframe so not sure what those complaints are all about. I am still using the original though it is mangled the Velcro still works. I’ll swap bands at some point in the near future - until then I really can’t report how this replacement works but don’t think it’s a big deal.
Get some gloves! They've absolutely changed the effort I can put into rowing and lifting now that I'm not worried about shredding my palms anymore.

You're welcome! This has certainly been popular - I'm glad I can help!
That's tough when legumes make you feel too much bloating, have you found the way they are prepared makes a difference? It might be good to make them into a soup or similar where they are well cooked.
Protein powder can be helpful, not that you want to use it for all your protein needs but a serving can give you 30g of protein which helps a ton.
Chia and hemp seeds can be great sources of protein too. Whole grains, especially oats, quinoa, amaranth, and wild rice are great sources
Pumpkin or sunflower seeds are good. Healthwarrior makes a great bar with seeds and honey that might be worth checking out. 9g of protein in the bar which is pretty good without any powders or anything!

As much as I don't want to contribute to lining Bezos' pockets, I have four of these sports bras from Amazon and they are amazing. The trick is to step into them when putting it on, but it keeps everything in place and no bouncing or smooshing. I really hate the uni-boob look and feel, but this bra is extremely supportive and shapely. (I reallly want to recommend it to all the ladies I see bouncing all over the treadmills during class but I bite my tongue.) It's only $26-$28 (depending on color) and I've been wearing and washing mine weekly for over a year and they've held up beautifully.

These are the ones I’ve been wearing! Super comfy and supportive. I’ve also heard that the Lulu Aligns are great to grow with you, but I haven’t tried them.
Good luck, momma!
Overnight, you could try wearing a splint/brace designed for plantar fasciitis to keep your ankle at 90 degrees and therefore the calf stretched out. But it would be best to check with your doctor before you try this. https://www.amazon.com/BraceAbility-Fasciitis-Stretcher-Nighttime-Dorsiflexion/dp/B00BWQ4C6E
I wear Eargasm earplugs to OTF. It's absolutely too loud.
I bought the Etymotic Research ER20XS plugs after seeing them recommended here. I really like them, and unlike foam earplugs they actually stay in my ear. I don't even remember I'm wearing them when I'm in class.
But remember that I've only been at OTF for a week, and I've only worked out in the ER20XS plugs twice. I don't think I'll change my mind about them in the long run, but full disclosure that I don't have a lot of experience with them yet.
I would’ve even been fine with last, so kudos on setting your sights higher than mine.
I live in South Florida and the Miami 1/2 and Marathon are gorgeous routes. Enjoy!
FWIW I bought a FlipBelt for my outdoor practice runs to hold a little water, keys, mini sunscreen, ID, and to loop a towel through. I was so glad I had it, since my various practice routes didn’t have options to pit stop for water. I didn’t wear it on race day, but I felt lighter, which in a very small way made it seem easier than my practice.
Pro tip: freezing water in the bottles just causes them to melt down your backside as you run, and the water ends up warm anyway. Would not recommend the freezing.
I bought the same otf treadmill as did several of my friends from our studio when it upgraded the treadmills. The coaches recommended just buying a converter like someone else mentioned on here from Amazon for about $5. Works perfectly and thankfully we didn’t have to hire an electrician.

I love these especially for running outside because the pocket fits my phone perfect.
