I would strongly recommend that you read In Control: Dangerous Relationships and How They End in Murder, if you've got the spare cash or are lucky enough to be near a library which can get it for you.
There are an awful lot of features of domestic abuse which simply don't make sense, unless you throw out a lot of your assumptions about what makes sense and start again from first principles. Read about stages 1-3 and it will completely change your perspective on the value of doing these things for what previously seemed like bugger-all.
The peak coffee mug. Lifetime warranty, fully sealed, works one handed, fits in a normal cup holder, keeps coffee warm for 9-10hrs and tepid/drinkable to 12.
Genuinely, without a doubt the best pens I have ever owned. He will be able to do 10 page statements from hell perched on the corner of a stinking, shite coloured sofa with the heating on at 30 degrees without even the hint of hand or wrist cramp.
I like Pocket Sergeant a lot, but my real bible is Police Visual Handbook. Only criticism of PVH is that it can take a while to learn to navigate to the right stuff, but it's staggeringly comprehensive. Pocket Sergeant makes it easier to find the most important stuff and is very user-friendly, but I've found it's nowhere near as comprehensive as PVH.
Can't comment on iPlod as never used it.
this bbc documentary is good: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0b09fnz/stephen-the-murder-that-changed-a-nation-series-1-3-corruption-conviction
In the documentary above, one officer went undercover with the GMP in training school and found shocking racism there. That was 15 years ago. Those are still officers who are currently serving. No one's saying all police are racist, but it takes just a small number to create real problems and really damage relations with communities.
It's also a fact admitted by ex cops that there were corrupt/racist cops who helped the killers of Stephen Lawerence. It's a fact that racism was rife at one point and it's probably best we admit it so healing can be done with the police and the community. Some things take generations to heal.
Yes, you're on the right lines.

Has varying levels from beginner to 'Elite' but it's useful.
For the TDC side, I fucked the counsel day books right the fuck off. They’re shit and I broke my cardinal rule of never buying what the job would ordinarily provide and got one of these and a box of these.
You spend most of your time scribbling shit down, and while you can do it with a scratchy biro and a thrice recycled soft-cover book, for the sake of £20 you can at least pretend you’ve got a real job.
(You will need said scratchy biro for filling out evidence bags, and if anyone challenges you point out that the book a) can’t have its pages detached and b) is numbered).
I can only answer for DHEP, not the detective scheme so not sure whether the advice would stand but:
I wouldn't worry about pre reading.
I personally bought the Blackstone's Manual for Policing Students but only managed like 8 chapters before I started training because I'm a slow reader and it's not exactly the most gripping read. From my experience, you don't know what you need to know until you're being taught it and you can see what's being glossed over due to time.
If I went through the recruitment process again, I'd enjoy my free time before starting, then try and pay better attention to the initial training and supplement it with extra reading on legislation, policy etc. Then once you start on whatever team you're on, you'll realise you know even less than you thought.
My force response doesn't carry investigations so may vary a little but I have:
A clamshell folding plastic clipboard like this that I keep a few pieces in, mainly statement paper and the odd other thing I feel I might need if I get chance to grab paperwork.
Then I keep a bunch of paperwork like search books, RTC books etc in plastic wallets and plastic popper wallets in my kit bag in the boot that I pick from when needed.
A lot is on our phones now anyway
First of all good job and welcome.
Bag wise, I’ve always opted for these styled rucksacks. Easy to carry around and they’re small. Can also throw on some molle pouches which can be useful. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Military-Tactical-Rucksacks-Travelling-Activities-Black/dp/B07GGPH3CZ.
The torches my force issue are naff and you have to shake them for it to work??? I got mine from Amazon but it’s rechargeable battery, different intensity’s and you can focus the light. This good boy has found me a few mispers. https://nightsearcher.co.uk/en/category/flashlights-7fe/product/zoom-1000r-74.html
Do you have a gym at work? I’ve found using the gym at work after days and before afters and nights has really helped me to get into a good routine. Using the work gym rather than a private gym just removes the barrier of having to physically “go to” the gym and daft as it sounds that makes all the difference.
I usually do an arm day, a chest/back day, a shoulders/core day and a leg day.

Lastly if you have any friends willing to work out with you that always makes it a more enjoyable experience

Just undo the wings holding the badges in place and make small cuts in this. Much MUCH better quality and has that "genuine leather" smell which we all know isn't actually leather...
I used to carry a huge kitbag then I thought to myself, why the fuck am I carrying this around? This is what I carry in my kitbag for a bit of help:
Main Compartment
Secondary Compartment
Side pockets
I just chuck my hi-vis jacket in the car, currently got an artkis hi-vis jacket so it's too bulky to fit in a bag but it's amazing for BDV/RTC's etc. It's on a long-term loan from a friend in RPU not sure if he knows about our agreement, however...
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mil-Tec-MOLLE-Tactical-Assault-Backpack/dp/B004LSBYR0
This kit bag is really good as far as backpack style backpacks. I have it myself and it seems very durable. Not sure if it’s waterproof but the material is quick thick so should be fine unless it’s really soaking it down. I would buy some waterproof bags to separate kit and keep it dry if needed.
It’s 36 litres so you wouldn’t be able to carry body armour in it for example, but I imagine that would be left in a locker anyway (I have no experience of how it works for SCs but in PC training we get lockers in my force) but it does fit everything you’ll need to take back and forth everyday if you get a locker
LifeVenture travel mug is what I use - it's awesome.
The tea doesn't seem to go funny tasting in it even after a couple of hours and you can make the brew directly in there rather than in a mug and having to transfer it or otherwise struggle to get the sugar ratio right.
I take it to any meetings so that they offer me a cup of tea them I have the travel mug for a second drink as all the bloody meetings drag on forever!
Also use it when I'm doing proper policing as it fits perfectly in the cup holders in cars and also the drink bottle thing on my kit bag.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/WUBEN-Powerful-Flashlight-Rechargeable-Waterproof/dp/B08D99S2XF/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?c=ts&keywords=Torches&qid=1669387879&refinements=p_4%3AWUBEN&s=diy&sr=1-1&ts_id=1938891031 honestly it's incredibly cheap in comparison to most, its small and hooks onto my vest and though it lacks "zoom" features like some it is honestly like turning on a sun! Highly recommended. Had mine for ages now and its still awesome. Can't go wrong for 25 quid ish!
I’ve had my fair share of torches and this has been the best so far. Only complaint is it’s a little bulky compared to others but it’s brilliant.
Lumitact Torches LED Super... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09CKZWMB3?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I'd recommend this, I got myself one and it's great. Adjustable zoom, 3 brightness modes, strobe and sos modes. The tip also has sharpened teeth for cracking windows (or faces in a pinch) and has a USB port for charging devices.
the only downfall is the pouch it comes with is poorly made and the strap frayed away whilst on my belt.
Always hear of people using iPlod and Pocket Sgt apps.
Rarely hear about people using the Police Visual Handbook which is free to officers.
Also use the PNLD website.
You can get admin/utility patches that have a phone pouch if that helps?
Linked below. I personally want want a phone on a handcuff as I’d want a ‘clean’ handcuff pouch incase the phone gets in the way or in case you open the phone pouch instead of the cuffs etc
I've got Pocket Sergeant and iPlod both installed, however, I've been recently using the Police Visual Handbook Online app. Our force has used the desktop version for years and now they've brought out an app. It's completely free.
It's for nurses but it's amazing. You can setup different types of shift integrate with Google calendar and also share it with your partner. If you both work shifts it'll tell you when you're both off together.
It's awesome me and my partner use it
Are these what you are referring to mate? https://www.amazon.co.uk/KINBOM-2-25inch-Tactical-Enforcement-Activities/dp/B0BBLCQ9Q6/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?crid=2U4F0X15QDC1C&keywords=belt+keeper&qid=1666554184&qu=eyJxc2MiOiI0LjU2IiwicXNhIjoiNC4xMiIsInFzcCI6IjMuOTkifQ%3D%3D&sprefix=be...
So they go around both belt kit and leather belt. Meaning you would be required to remove them after every shift, as otherwise you would be unable to remove the kit belt as usual?
I'm not a copper but today we had a mini situation at my place of work, because I honestly had reason to believe that a client of ours, who is known to be violently unpredictable, had a knife in his back pocket. Now it turns out it was a BBQ lighter very similar to one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/Kitchen-Lighter-Barbecue-Refillable-Lighters/dp/B09RNFK7PS/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=bbq+lighter&qid=1666036481&qu=eyJxc2MiOiI2LjA5IiwicXNhIjoiNS40NSIsInFzcCI6IjUuNDQifQ%3D%3D&sr=8-3
But from the angle and distance I saw him, I considered it likely enough that it needed following up.
Yes ultimately he didn't have a knife. Was I justified in checking? Yes Would I have been negligent if I'd have ignored the risk? Absolutely bloody right.
Great shout - exactly what I use and has survived some gross encounters but with the strap…
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Spigen-Compatible-Resilient-Absorption-Resistant/dp/B07HSS4KYJ
I had a spigen tough armour case on my old one which was great. What watch size have you got? I’m not sure where my old one is is but if it’s the 38mm I’ll go have a rummage for it and if I find it I’ll post you it?
If you have a light bulb thingy outside, this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Light-Camera-Security-Vision-Two-Way/dp/B0B74KMN52/ works well.
Looks clear, tracks people walking past, has IR lights for night vision, you can speak through it, you can hear through it, and it saves any movement on your phone, all for £35.
hi,
by anti burglar kits i mean things you can use to make your property more secure or less of a target.
such as:-
stickers saying cctv in operation ( you can buy these off amazon for a couple of quid)
cctv systems or fake ones
exterior lighting
chain lock for the door
smartwater systems
alarms ( you can buy very cheap battery powered alarms for windows and doors that make a very loud noise) https://www.amazon.co.uk/PIECE-WINDOW-ENTRY-MOUNTING-BATTERIES/dp/B0060IWRQG/ref=sr_1_8?crid=VXZ2Z0G5G6ZD&keywords=battery+door+alarm&qid=1663779478&sprefix=battery+door+alarm%2Caps%2C96&sr=8-8
then theres things like timer switches for lights
leaving radio on when youre out is a good deterrent ( tune it to a talk channel like radio 4 )
the worry you have about the door i cant help with as i dont know if someone could stick a crowbar in without seeing it, but that could happen with most doors so i wouldnt worry too much. you could go to extreme of fitting drop bars to your door but i think thats overkill.
the phone thing, yes i think you need mobile data on both, but you can buy cheap sim cards nowadays with lots of data. search ip webcam which is another way of doing it

as others have said you dont have to make your home fort knox...you just have to make it seem not worth the effort.
You know how the Feds got Al Capone, right? It wasn't for production or sale of alcohol, it wasn't for ordering any of the murders he ordered, it was for tax evasion on all the money he was making from the above.
That's a rather dramatic example of taking someone down by the achilles heel. There's usually something; when someone gets away with one thing with impunity, they tend to start trying to get away with a lot of others as well. Former DCI Clive Driscoll talks a lot in his autobiography about how he used those tactics on his way up:
>The first thing I did was pay a visit to the guy who'd farmed his own girlfriend out to his son. ... "You can stop hitting her, or I will have you. What is the deal you want?" > >"Bring it on, copper", he said. "I'm not scared of you. > >That was fine. At least we knew where we stood. > >About six months later I saw him again. This time he was in the dock on a charge of handling stolen goods, a fact. I'd caught him red-handed. When he got the chance to speak, he started yelling at the magistrate. "I'm only in here because I hit my girlfriend and he said he'd get me!" > >"Is this true, Sergeant?" > >"It is true he hit his girlfriend but it is also true he handled stolen goods."
Set a proper proactive team to work with a tight remit, and they can achieve all kinds of results through every available back door and unlatched bathroom window. By the way, [get the book, it's a cracking read]((https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pursuit-Truth-Clive-Driscoll-ebook/dp/B011MW27ZU/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1DOGMY19JXF90), and not long after this moment comes the tale of "Operation Worst Undercover Idea Ever", which is worth the price of admission
This stuff is helpful. It's basically an antiperspirant for your tackle, with a bit of a minty tingle. Not a game changer, but it helps a bit and it's cheap enough to try on the off-chance.
You can get wicking underwear and they're really good. I bought a pair deom Exofficio after seeing them recommended on Reddit, and whilst they were significantly more than I'd normally pay for my trolleys, they make a big difference and are my go-to for duties on hot days.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Thermos-Stainless-King-Flask-Midnight/dp/B001ET6P9Q
One of these bad boys fits a tin of soup/beans/alphabetti spaghetti etc in and keeps it toasty warm for 7 hours if you prep the container properly before putting the hot food in. That and a couple of bread rolls in my lunch bag goes in my go bag so I can easily eat a fairly decent and relatively healthy hot meal on the go.
My personal issue is portion control, so I really like the multipacks of graze snack boxes so I have a good variety of pre-portioned snacks I can chuck in my bag and go. Plus I bulk buy biltong bites and portion that out into snack bags for a quick protien fix.
I also have a hot flask which fits two mugfuls of coffee and stays warm the whole shift, which saves me buying out and means I always have a hot drink to hand. Then a cold flask and a little squirt bottle of squash. Most places (like a petrol station with a coffee counter) will let you fill your water bottle up, some will even let you have boiling water to remake a coffee!
Honestly some days you just don't get time to eat which is why I like to keep my refs with me so I'm not tempted by a takeaway if I'm stuck out of the office. Start as you mean to go on and get into a routine with it or you'll fall into the Maccys trap.
When you set up your go bag, make sure you stock up on some emergency snacks like cereal bars etc, and if you get a locker/cubby/tray in the office stick some emergency noodles or cup a soups in there just in case.
Nobody I've ever worked with has ever had an issue with someone eating in the passenger seat, you have to get it in where you can as you never know when you'll get called away. Just try to make sure it's not something really smelly like eggs or fish!
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Protec-leather-warrant-card-holder/dp/B005IMGZ5O
I got one of these a number of years ago, I'm sure there are other options out there available to buy. I can carry my warrant card and use the wallet safe in the knowledge that unless I reveal the leather flap covering the card it just looks like any other wallet.
Like others have said, I would carry it all the time, the one time you don't have it will be the day you need it (been in that very situation). If you can't trust yourself to act sensibly while intoxicated then that should be the time you leave it at home.
My friend got my this
I’ve never built Lego before that and I can confirm it’s therapeutic
I use this, plus a rucksack with about 45kg. (You just need the vest.) It's a worthy investment, think of it like your boots.
Functional fitness is far more important than just lifting heavy shit in the same fashion all the time.
I don't like CrossFit really, the risk of injury seems fairly high with quite wild form. They do however have some great WODs that are perfect for the role. Search wodwell on Google, plenty of free ones, bodyweight etc that can be done at home.
I also do a deck of cards, can download an app. 4 exercises of your choosing, (press-ups, pull ups, goblet squats and something's abs, is what I like) each exercise is represented by a suit, the number of reps are represented by the value, and I tend to sprint a certain length between each card. The draw is randomised then by the app itself. 35 minutes or so, awesome workout. play store link
For bleep test.... Treadmill start at 7kph. 2% incline.

I just got these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07YKXR248/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_ZNPRF82KTK9DDG0TZFAH?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Only £20 for two of them. Wasn't holding out much hope, but when they arrived they are brilliant.
Has a very bright and less bright mode with zoom and focus. Side working light, with magnetic base so you can clamp it onto stuff. Also has a tough metal clip, and a red side light if you don't want to attract attention from afar.
Also has UV for doing whatever forensics do with that, or checking security markings, and the mode I call "in case you've forgotten your police car" which is super bright strobing red and white.
Plus rechargeable by USB - and if you lose or break it, there's a spare!
Anker LC40 USB chargeable, small, bright and I clip it to my stab vest
CCTV like this. blink camera
Place it on the window cill preferably where light doesn’t impact its view through the window. Cheap but good. Or get the whole blink range. But I’d agree to ring 999 as well as the above.

You may be interested in episode 10 of Dr Mike Simpson's Mind of the Warrior Podcast, which came out last week.
Simpson is a former US Special Operations soldier (I became aware of him because he pals around with Tim Kennedy) and in episode 10 he talks with Chad Lyman about the use of force within a law enforcement.
Lyman is a serving police officer with the Las Vegas PD (https://lvppa.com/corporate-profile/board-of-directors/chad-lyman-2/), a BJJ Black Belt (he’s a BJJ coach at Xtreme Couture) and also works with a company that provides tactical training from law enforcement.
While the discussion is about law enforcement in the American context the majority of the discussion is about unarmed combat for police officers and Lyman’s ideas about what is (and isn’t effective).
The podcast can be found at the link below. Though it's also on both ITunes and Google Podcasts.

That's an airsoft wanker bag through and through.
Congrats on the new role.
Response officer here. When I started I bought a massive hold all for everything I could ever possibly need and it was always in the way. took up half the back of the car. Wouldn't fit in the boot when we had to transport a prisoner, massive pain.
Nowadays I just have a rucksack. I keep my traffic coat rolled up and clipped to the side of it, and carry my cap separately. It's got my clipboard and traffic book in it, some gloves, cold weather bits, emergency red bull, water bottle, spare cuffs and a safety knife. I rarely need anything else, and ultimately, if I do I can just ask someone to run something out to me.
Just don't be one of those officers who spend £000's on a massive body bag with their name embroidered onto it, covered in thin blue line patches, weighing half a ton, and getting in the way all the time!

And pick up a 1:25k OS map to play with
I've used these torches since I first started way back as a special. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B084C2HLVN/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_7PQ4C21NCFZFZBCGVHJN
Ruggedised and takes standard batteries. Also fits the Klickfast torch dock perfectly. Has two brightness levels. High beam for open area searches at night and the lower is better for more close up work.
Issues police torches are just standard torches with nothing fancy. I use one of these, it’s infinitely better. Not a police officer, but, how about gun oil? Comes in a spray.
I bought a set of these for use on long cycle rides, and they last the entire 8/9 hours im out for (with more in reserve in the case, so if you use them one at a time you could get days out of them). Very happy with them, and quite cheap
A few things for you...

> I go to jobs and sometimes I just don’t know where to start or what I expect my end goal to be from the job.
Anyone interested in this might also find this book on a similar topic a good read - i know I did

Assuming the first 3 times you've already asked this hasn't been answered...
It's not really as simple as just walking in to Thames House with a CV. In seriousness you're not going to just find some random Joe on a Reddit Sub who will just spill their heart out to you on how to ''join them.''

If you want a rough answer:
First off what I imagine you're referring to, aren't called 'spies' they're called Intelligence Officers.
No you wont be sneaking around, assassinating people, blowing up buildings, and stopping a bald one-eyed dude with a fluffy white cat from disrupting rocket launches. It is primarily intelligence gathering.
The starting salary is okay, just shy of £32'000.
You need a minimum of a 2:2 degree in any field, or previous experience in a 'relevant role', Military Intelligence for example.

Soldier Spy by Tom Marcus gives one a semi-decent insight in to the day of an Intel Opo, obviously the book only tells the sexier side of the job because that's what sells.
If you want to apply for a job, you go on their website, like any other civil service.
Depends if you prefer a hold-all type bag or a backpack.
I have both, the backpack I used as a laptop bag, personal stuff, chargers etc.
My hold-all is more like a mobile officers with lots of paperwork, hat, high vis etc.
This is a popular backpack style bag:
Reference hold-all, there is a lot of good ones. Patrol store and Protec supplies is a good place for kit bags. Protec supplies (also called police supplies) can print your collar number on your bag for free too which is nice
This was the one I had before. It had a white, blue, green and red light ability. I wasnt fussed about the colour changing but as it was a gift I wasn't going to complain.
I did eventually fail however I suspect that was down to some negligence on my part
Thread reminded me of: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0811YS3TB/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i1
Really good book (as well as his first one) - with great big section covering reasonable force and how papers love to lie to you about it.
Educational, entertaining and feeds that little burning fire of rage in your soul.
Wear an apple watch, got this on it

Never let me down, 2 in the pack, my actual watch face is completely scratchless because of this little thing
I know you said that you are getting good sleep but (educated guess) you may not be sleeping well.
When I was sleeping like crap a few years ago (and every now and then recently actually) I used these and felt a lot better - https://www.amazon.co.uk/PACK-Kalms-One-Night-BUNDLE/dp/B00V6I36V0/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=kalms&qid=1628712805&sr=8-5
There are other similar products which also work. When I used them I slept, I didn't dream and felt refreshed when I woke up, and also felt rested. It may be worth a look, they are herbal as opposed to something dodgy.
I personally think we should de criminalize drugs and try a different approach to how we deal with them.

This is a superb book written by a retired police chief from Seattle who gives good arguments for both decriminalizing drugs and demilitarizing the police. He essentially says what you’ve just said about the population being the “enemy.”
Like Ross Kemp said below, the texture is awful IF you only use the little ball and shake it like a protein shake.
I blend mine with the above ingredients, and when its blended, its absolutely fine. With the raw oats, and all the bits of fruit, it has a smoothie texture. Proper nice and also really good for you

I use this and its the nuts
Haven't actually seen many officers with a basic Casio.
Most officers I know either have an Apple Watch (or FitBit Versa) or a more traditional kind of watch around £30-50.
I use a ~£100 G-Shock that I think looks Gucci and has step tracking but also have confidence won't break on me. If it gets scratched it'll just be a battle scar and if it gets covered in some less than welcome fluids I'll just give it a bath in hand sanitizer.

For myself, I have a Parker Jotter. For MOPs, I carry a couple cheap biros that are lying around the nick and that I can quickly bin and not care about them.

Bic Soft Feel Medium.
I always go for these. Comfortable to use, very smooth, and no lid to lose.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Uni-Ball-SXN-210-Jetstream-Retractable-Rollerball/dp/B000NK01LU
These. Genuinely the best pens I have ever used, especially if you have larger hands. No handcramp whatsoever and makes easy work of 10 page-long statements
The main pen I use is a uni-ball Eye rollerball type as I prefer how smooth it feels and the ink it produces. But as it can smudge easily if you're not careful I also carry Paper Mate Inkjoys as the ink is still a decent bit smoother than the shitty ballpoints the job provides but doesn't smudge anywhere near as easily.
Carry one of each on my vest as well as one or two of each in my duty bag. Also keep a black Sharpie on my vest and in my bag too.
I'm going to give a proper reply as well as the sarcastic one I gave.
If you're worried about your fitness ability, now is the time get working on it. Download a couch to 5k running app and find a route you can follow it to for 30 minutes. By the time you finish the 9 weeks on the app, you'll be to run the bleep test with your eyes closed, holding your breath, backwards.
I recommend the NHS' endorsed app:
Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.phe.couchto5K
IOS: https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/one-you-couch-to-5k/id1082307672
I have a cheap pair of tuff cuts that I got from custody. Basically a pair of these, but black. If you do go buying your own just make sure to buy an actual quality pair, there is a huge difference between 'scissors' and tuff cuts.
Leatherman Raptors are your Rolls Royce. if you do want them get them straight from a medical supplier, usually cheaper.
The book unnatural causes follows the life of Dr Richard Shepherd , he was a coroner who specialised in knife injuries. He was the lead for the Hungerford massacre. Its a really interesting read (especially if you work in investigations)
I’ve got a Speck phone case which is great, I’ve got an iPhone but I imagine the Samsung ones are just as good. It doesn’t have a stand but I suggest you pair it with this. (or similar car phone mount) as it works as a stand if you attach it and rest it on a surface and it’s really great when you’re jumping in and out of different vehicles.
