Try the Imgur app and adding imgur.com to Settings -> Browser -> External browser URLs
In app version 4.1.7 rolling out this week, it will give you the option to open albums/galleries externally while still opening single images and GIFV in RIF.
Hi there,
It looks like you might be posting about a very common question (certain Imgur links causing reddit is fun to crash). If this is the case, then please refer to the information below in response to your question:

https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/talklittle/reddit-is-fun/
APKMirror goes back to v3.6.16, released August 7, 2015.
You should be aware versions older than this are unlikely to even work anymore. There have been numerous changes to the reddit API since then, and you definitely won't be able to log into it because OAuth is now required and the old version did not support it.
This is definitely a bug in the YouTube app. You should contact their support via their support channels listed at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.youtube
RIF does not do anything special with YouTube videos when passing them over to the YouTube app, it just hands over a simple URL.

I prefer the Opengur Imgur app. It's fast, lightweight, and works awesome for Imgur albums, as well. You can upload images via the app and copy the direct image link for the image right from the notification (unlike the Imgur app which makes you copy the gallery page link).

There's a new Android System WebView released in the past few days. Are you using that?
No idea if it will help or not, since their changelog is outdated, but it's a possibility.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.webview
This is the component that displays web content within reddit is fun. If you cannot install or update it, then you will not be able to view gifv or WebM videos. You will have to use Chrome.
Support is not dependent on RiF, it's whether your System WebView component is up to date. Gifv/WebM videos have always worked for me in RiF, but I only use Nexus devices. Your device may or may not let you update the WebView component.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.webview
There is a recent update to Android System WebView that may fix this issue.
From the changelog:
> WHAT'S NEW
>• Fixed inline video crash issues.
>• Added workarounds for graphics driver bugs which were causing some devices to hang.
Well, you see, the entire point of .nomedia
is to prevent it from being included in media scans by apps (e.g., your default gallery app)... hence why it's called "Private".
If the Private option didn't include .nomedia
, then it wouldn't be private. That folder—and all of the images and/or videos inside—could end up appearing in the Gallery and/or Google Photos app's library... which defeats the purpose of a "Private" save location.
Also, FWIW, I know the F-Stop Gallery app has an option in the settings to "Ignore .nomedia
"... so maybe what you really need is a different app that can be configured to ignore .nomedia
?

Did you even look at the subreddit? This is for discussion of the app, reddit is fun.
Also, you were totally in the wrong.
I chatted with the developer about this and we're both kind of at a loss about why this could be happening (and why removing and re-adding the account won't work, either). And nothing with the app's account/login mechanism has changed recently, either.
The only other thing he could think of would be to try changing your password on the reddit desktop website, then go through the [Account FAQ steps](/r/redditisfun/wiki/faq_accounts), again, for removing and re-adding your account.
If that still doesn't work, I guess you could try downgrading to an earlier version of RiF and see if that works. You can download v4.9.3 from APKMirror. If that works, try updating to the most recent version, again, and see if it still happens.
Let me know if you have any luck.
Oh, and if you don't mind answering some surveys (and giving Google more demographical information about yourself), you could install the Google Opinion Rewards app and probably have earned enough Play Store credit to buy the GP version within a month or two.

Well it turns out that the culprit is AdBlocker Reborn
In the settings there is a default option called "Enable Cancelable Dialog" which allows any dialog to be dismissed and that was triggering it.
I'm not certain why an ad blocker is blocking a service used send crash reports, as it has nothing to do with advertisements.
https://firebase.google.com/docs/crashlytics/
And what's happening is that it's trying to upload a crash report but it's getting blocked. If it wasn't blocked, it wouldn't have actually uploaded 60 MB of data... instead, it's probably just tried to upload 512kb of a crash report and stack trace but it keeps getting blocked, so it waits 10 minutes or so and tries again. And by "it" I mean the Crashlytics service, not RiF that's actively trying to upload this.
And you can disable crash reports in the app settings under Privacy.
>Is this something that has to be addressed by imgur only?
Yeah, pretty much. But I wouldn't hold my breath on that one... Imgur wants people to use their mobile app, so they don't really have a lot of incentive to make their mobile pages really responsive.
I'd recommend installing the open-source Opengur and then adding imgur.com
to your External Browser Rules. Then, whenever you open an Imgur link that can't be opened in the app via the Imgur API, it will open in the Opengur app. Opengur is really fast and lightweight, so it's way faster and better than the Imgur mobile site. They also don't have any motive to turn Imgur into a social site, so it's really ideal. (The app is, sadly, no longer actively developed; however, everything of any import still works and, if/when Imgur makes a breaking change, I'm sure somebody else will fork it and take up the project.)
If you find that Nova isn't for you (I've test-driven it a few times, always went back to my default launcher), check this out...
The long RiF GP name irked me too, so I just deleted the icon from my home screen and created a new one with this very-straightforward app. You can name it whatever you want and even select the image (I'm using a Snoo icon from before reddit launched their official app).
Hope this helps.
Wiping the cache could still be helpful, despite already reinstalling. You should def do that.
If you haven't already, maybe try downloading another battery monitor, such as gsam and see if the reports coincide.
This isn't a problem with reddit is fun, it's a problem with your version of the Android System WebView component. The "internal browser" is just a plugin (based on Chrome) built into Android that apps can call on to display websites. The updated component may require Android 5.x to install, so you might not be able to update it depending on what version of Android is available for your device.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.webview
well i'm curious to check it out if possible. I really enjoyed RIF on Android 4 and I checked many threads for options but your app is unanimously praised. I also don't use the play store nor goog play services...um... "y'all got any more of those"
rif-lite-release_3.2.3.1.apk ?
edit: two days later I still can't locate a copy of the above file, so I have tried the fork which is called "Diode":
https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdfilter=diode&fdid=in.shick.diode
A standard LCD won't benefit from darker pixels. The entire screen is either lit or unlit, so it takes the same amount of energy to light a black pixel as a white pixel. In fact, unless you have a display that adapts your brightness based on the number of black pixels, more white pixels will save energy. See this link for a better explanation.
Press and hold on RIF icon, then tap edit, the tap the icon. This will present with system icons, default icons, custom icons, etc...
In the video below I switch the icon to a white RIF, which doesn't work well with my theme, so then I switch it to the official Reddit app icon.
You can more or less assign any icon you want to it.
EDIT: It looks like the video cuts off early but it gives the general idea.
Probably just how the links are submitted. If they're submitted without https, you won't get them as https. You're thinking of HTTPS Everywhere, which is a third-party tool.
It depends if they are doing SSL inspection on the network (this is basically where they will do a Man-in-the-Middle on the SSL Certificate from api.reddit.com
).
If so, then yes. If not, then no. They will only be able to see the requests are being sent to domains like api.reddit.com
and *.thumbs.redditmedia.com
but not the actual content of what's being requested or returned by the server.
The easiest way you'll be able to determine if the certificate is genuine is by opening the site in a desktop browser and looking at the certificate.
In Chrome:
Inspect
—or press Ctrl
+Shift
+I
)If it says anything else, it's probably because it's they are doing SSL MitM.
For example, at my work, they use a McAfee gateway. Most HTTPS sites are left untouched, but if I go to https://mail.google.com
and inspect the certificate for it, it will say it was issued by "McAfee Web Gateway" or something. That's because they are inspecting all SSL traffic to/from mail.google.com
(probably for I.P. reasons).
I think integrating Imgur accounts in RiF would muddy the water too much. Once your account in Imgur is linked, why not allow selecting images from your existing uploads to submit as a link? Or to upload to your account without submitting? Or viewing/managing your Imgur uploads? They're each just a small step from the previous, but now it's a reddit+Imgur app and add significant complexity to the app in terms of maintenance and debugging.
I think you're better off using an app like QuickImgur. One nice feature about this app is that it automatically copies the direct image link to your clipboard after you upload it, making it easy to quickly upload an image and use the link elsewhere.
You could also look into a 3rd party app like this one that does what you're looking for. I've never used any apps like that and I just found that one through a quick search so I can't vouch for it, but I'm sure you could find one that works for you.
Buy "Private Internet Access".
Best VPN out there. I use it on my phone and my computer. When it's on, it blocks most ads (you may have to download the APK manually because Google doesn't like how PIA has an ad block feature.)
On your phone or computer, download Betternet VPN. It will unblock any websites and links from whatever WiFi you're using. It's free and works fairly quickly. The first time I installed it on my phone, it didn't work until I rebooted the phone, just a heads up. It works perfectly
I didn't make that submission in the screenshot, but on Samsung, it's built into their screenshot app. Dunno for iPhone.
Edit : on Android if you don't have a Samsung, you can use his app : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.glitch.stitchandshare
>If anyone's got a better solution, I'm all ears.
Install Open Link With, use the share menu in chrome and share to Open Link With and it will open the page with RiF.
>This seems like functionality that should exist
I have to disagree. While it's something that you might want, the vast majority of users are only ever going to want to open a link in the default app for that link.
That kind of functionality is pushing outside the scope of a "reddit browsing app," and doing this would add a whole host of things that the developer would have to maintain and handle that are completely unrelated to browsing reddit (e.g., the differences in permissions for different versions of Android, how to handle cases where the user selects an incompatible app to send a link to, how to handle a selected app no longer existing on the device, etc.) that would take time away from requested features that a larger number of users would use and have requested.
Perhaps an app like Open Link With... would work?
Awesome!
Custom Tabs API seems to accept package name, so hopefully that should be as simple as using "org.mozilla.firefox" instead of "com.android.chrome".
Samsung Internet browser also seems to support custom tabs, and also supports ad blockers, I did not test how it works though.
>Or install a "share to clipboard" app and share the link to that app.
While I would love for it to be a native feature, this seems to be a good workaround. Thanks!
If anyone else reading this wants to know, I installed this clipboard app.
> I do not use a VPN, is that common for RiF users?
Dunno how common it is. Any public VPN would be suspect since they can do whatever to your traffic, without accountability. So we've ruled that out.
Is your Android System WebView up to date? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.webview Try clearing app data & cache for that too.

I don't know what app you used for the shortcut but I ended up using Awesome Icons and it doesn't restart the app for me.
For what it's worth, I prefer Opengur over the official imgur client. It at least copies the direct image link instead of the link to the imgur detail page.
I quit using the built in browser completely due to issues like that.
I would recommend setting RiF up to use external browsers like chrome/Firefox, etc, in the settings.
I can also recommend a neat little app called chromer.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=arun.com.chromer
It's what I use, and have not had any issues at all.
Does an app like AppLock meet your needs?
I haven't used it, it was the first Google result for "launcher protect android app pin"
I believe it should work on any LG phone that supports dual window. I am unfamiliar with the G4s or G4c, but If they support dual window, then this should work.
If you check the "What's new" section on the reddit is fun app on the play store, you see they listed "LG Dual Window" which should cover all LG phones like I said.
Stack Overflow: How do I view Android application specific cache?
I assume you are asking because you want to see what is taking up that cache space...
The best way to decrease your cache usage in RiF is to disable the setting to prefetch images (Settings --> Images). Prefetching downloads images in the background after a page of post listings has loaded in order to make opening the image faster if/when you decide to open the link. That prefetched image is cached, though, which means you can end up having a lot of images cached from links you've never even opened... especially if you are on WiFi most of the time (prefetching is only enabled while on WiFi, by default).
Another option is to enable either Chrome Custom Tabs
or Always Use External Browser
under Settings --> Browser. This will use Chrome's (or your default browser's) cache instead of a separate one for the WebView Browser, so this may reduce cache size if you open links that have shared assets that are already cached.
I mix my dye powder with soda ash and use these fancy pants spoons to apply it
You want to automatically download images from a subreddit to a folder somewhere? With this app or using any method?
https://ifttt.com/ could probably do this into Google Drive, Dropbox or something similar.
Sorry for being an annoyance but I tested this on my other reddit app (RedReader) that also uses WebView and it displays the image without any issues. Quick edit: I just came back to the thread and read the other comments, there's no need to reply.
I'm on the op7tp and had exactly the same issue.
Swapped out the native gestures with FNG, and it works perfectly with lots of customisations on top.
Not sure if its a fix
The very bottom of the app app has downloaded app maybe it will or won't
Edit the app is volu.e limiter
It's against Reddit's TOS to be able to read deleted posts. What you can do is install https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hibzz.removedditPluginAndroid&hl=en and share the post to that to read them.
I'm lucky enough to have this still installed even thou it's been removed from the Play Store

Makes uploading and sharing an image / grabbing the URL from your notification bar easy peasy. hth
Ok, but the rest of the official app is garbage.
Here's what I do:
This whole process takes a whopping 15 seconds.
Look at the Better Open With app. I think it might work better than the "Open Link With..." app for what you want to do.
>Seems like this could also be baked into Android by allowing user additions to whatever list defines URL handlers.
The biggest problem with this is that it opens it up to problems if (or should I say when) a user inevitably tries setting a URL handle for an app that can't properly handle that kind of URL. Not to mention that it adds quite a great deal of complexity in a system that's intended to be relatively intuitive and seamless.
Google has worked very hard to shed the "Android is a lot more complicated than iOS..." reputation from the Android 2.0-3.0 days, over the years... and it's been an effort that has really paid off because that isn't something you hear nowhere nearly as often, anymore. What you're describing would add a lot more complexity (both under the hood in Android, for users who go playing in those settings without really understanding them, and for app developers who now have to add a whole lot more logic to their apps for checking, validating, and handling incompatible URLs) and is something that would only be used by a fraction of a percent of users.
Simply put: yes, Google could do it... but they won't. It would be a lot of added work with very minimal benefit.
But I think what you actually want can be handled by what would essentially a middleman app... the app would become the default handler for specified types (in your case, standard website URLs not already handled by another app), which could then be configured to send the Intent to a specified app.
It seems like Better Open With might be what you're looking for.
I just found this and it seems to be working without an issue. The bummer with free is you get none of the paid features.

Edit to add: I just exported my GP settings and imported into cloned and it seems to be working awesome. Seems like a great way to not have to deal with the ads after paying for the app.
>But I think this is a great example of why comment macros would be an extremely valuable feature to add to RiF... then it would be quick and easy to make a "ok, thanks for reporting, I'm looking into it" (or, for another example, a "this post has been removed for being off topic...") kind of reply...
I haven't tried it but maybe this app would fulfill your needs? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.isaiasmatewos.texpand
Look for it in the Play Store soon.
Sounds like Imgur is now automatically redirecting mobile browsers to their page in the Google Play Store (because just nagging users to install their app wasn't bad enough). Not really anything that the developer can do about this, unfortunately.
I will use this opportunity to suggest users install the Opengur app as an alternative to the official Imgur app, and then add Imgur to the external browser rules so any links that can't be opened in RiF will be opened in the Opengur app. (Link to Opengur in the Play Store — thanks /u/DRFT_RPS13)
Opengur is free, open-source, has no ads, and best of all it's really fast and light-weight. Way better and faster than opening links in the WebView Browser, Chrome, or even the official Imgur app.
(I know, I know: the Opengur app store page says it's no longer being actively developed... but it doesn't matter because everything that matters in the app works and, if/when something stops working, the app is open-source so I'm sure that someone will fork the code, update it, and re-release the app.)
I did some quick research and you might want to try an app like AdAware to help you find the offending app. Otherwise the are several other alternatives you could try, such as Malwarebytes, that can help with this.
Hmmm, weird.
Do me a favor and try installing this GfyCat app. When you open a gif in it, it will use the GfyCat API to convert it to a GIFV and then plays that.
The next time you get one of those Tumblr gifs that won't load, do the "open in browser" option and then choose the GfyCat app and see if it plays through that.
You can also just try setting up an external browser rule for Tumblr and enable the include subdomains option... then RiF will automatically pass any Tumblr links to Android and it will either open in a Chrome Custom Tab or, if you set the GfyCat to "Always" open gifs, it will load in that, right away.
Otherwise, I'm not sure what to tell you, since both of those gifs work perfectly fine in RiF for me....
There isn't a way to do this in RiF, but you might want to take a look at the app Search for Reddit, as it seems that this is one of its primary purposes.
Well I can't really answer whether or not gifs will redownload on each loop, but /u/talklittle has answered this before by saying that they don't. (Have you tried letting the gif fully load, first, and not tapping the "loading gif, tap to preview" screen? It might be that previewing it like this prevents it from properly caching...?)
But I think the real problem is that they are GIFs to begin with. Gifs—not gif*v*s—are complete shit for anything more than small animated effects. The format was never expected to be used for the kind of elaborate video that it has become used for, so there's basically zero file-size optimizations resulting in very large files for relatively little content.
I'd recommend the GfyCat Viewer app. When you open a gif link, use the "open in browser" option and then select the GfyCat Viewer app. The app will use the GfyCat API to convert the target GIF into the vastly-superior-in-every-single-way GIFV format (which is actually just a MP4/WEBM video without an audio track and which actually takes advantage of modern video compression technology, resulting in immensely smaller file sizes.
I just saw that there appears to be an unofficial GfyCat app, now. Can you try installing it and the next time you have a GfyCat link that won't play in RiF, use the open in browser
option (which should then open or prompt you to open it in the GfyCat app) and please report back if you find that they consistently play without issues in the app but not in RiF. This will at least help to identify the potential cause (or, at the very least, rule some out).
EDIT1: Another user has pointed out this may be due to 60 FPS video playback issues on Samsung devices. Please be sure to include the kind of phone (manufacturer and model) when reporting all issues.
EDIT2: Initial reports suggest that there are still playback issues with the problematic gifvs when using the GfyCat app, which seems to indicate that the problem is either related to something specific to the phone hardware or software, itself, or to network issues between the phone and the endpoint server (GfyCat).
If you are one the users who experience this or a similar problem—particularly with GfyCat—please test this, as well, and report back if the issues persist when using other (non-browser) apps. A larger sample size of data and user reports will make determining the root cause easier and aid the process of developing any potential solutions or workarounds.
You mentioned browsing without an external app, so you may not be interested, but this is what I use:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=halverson.gregory.reverseimagesearch
Share an image and choose "Search Image on Google", and away you go!
Edit: Oh, it doesn't seem to work in rif, though. I only see an option to share the image URL, not the image itself.
Hi there,
It looks like you might be posting about a very common question (certain Imgur links causing reddit is fun to crash). If this is the case, then please refer to the information below in response to your question:
>The crashes are due to issues with memory usage on certain devices by the Android System WebView on Imgur Gallery and Album pages. Since WebView is a third-party library, there isn't much talklittle can currently do to directly solve the issue (though a more permanent solution is still being investigated).
>In order to work around the problem, you can have RiF load all direct images and gifvs inside of the internal browser but send all Imgur Gallery and Album links to a separate browser or Imgur app (either the official Imgur app or the open-source Imgur app, Opengur).
>To do this:
>* Settings --> Browser --> Make sure the option In-app browser for images
is checked
>* Settings --> Browser --> External browser URLs -->
> 1. Tap the +
icon in the upper right corner to add a new rule.
> 2. For Domain enter imgur.com
, check the box below for Include subdomains
, then tap Save
.
>Now, for directly-linked Imgur images and gifvs, you will still open them in RiF as you currently do. But any Imgur links that point to a gallery or album (the kind of links that RiF cannot access through the imgur API), it will pass it off to whatever app you have designated in Android (which will be Chrome or whatever browser you use unless you have installed the Imgur or Opengur apps).
Hopefully this has answered your question!

I use Nova Launcher with the Moonshine Icon Pack. The icons are so much better than stock, and I get to keep the Snoo.
If that keeps happening, you might want to try uploading from the official Imgur app and then sharing the URL to "reddit is fun" from there.
Alright, if you insist :)
CatLog seems like a decent logcat app, although I haven't used it since I always read logs directly from Android Studio during development.
And the systemwide bug report (assuming you are talking about "Take bug report" in Developer Options) generally isn't very helpful, so we can skip that
Try this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.danlew.gfycat
When you select "open in browser" within RIF, it will launch the app in an overlay and it loads the Gyfcat-Link flawlessly. Love it.
Do you have this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.webview installed/enabled and updated?
Edit: This is only compatible with android 5 or higher, didn't know, thx /u/elmicha
> Google released an Android System WebView update dated May 11, which should fix the crashing issues. You can now update to the latest Android System WebView, and it should work again. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.webview
If you're having trouble downloading it through the store, try doing it through a browser.
