a couple years ago i was living out of my car, also had really bad depression and social anxiety.
I got a gym membership to a place with private showers thats open 24/7 and just parked near it.
for a cheap solution to your lighter socket, search 'cigarette lighter clamp' and get one long enough to reach you. it'll run you under 10$. https://www.amazon.ca/Cigarette-Lighter-Adapter-Battery-Crocodile/dp/B07XR16431/ref=sr_1_9?dchild=1&keywords=cigarette+lighter+clamp&qid=1608494378&sr=8-9
like eheas320 said, sleeping bag you can get at a thrift store.
lots of mcdonalds are open 24/7 with wall sockets.
$500-600/wk is plenty money to work with. These issues are trivial and i think its your depression thats making everything seem impossible. i bet working on your mental health will help you more than anything. good luck man.
It's This Thing plus a tarp and washcloth. I soap up the washcloth, scrub nastiness, and off camera is a small metal can that holds about 2 liters of water. I sat on the arm rest and rinsed off. The tarp funnels out of the truck with the door slightly open and Ideally into a bucket but I only caught a little water--the rest is all down the curb. So, that'll take some adjusting. I have curtains on the window and a windshield screen. I have the curtain set up so that it blocks the little bit of sight from the door being ajar.
It all worked pretty well! My ass was sliding all over the tarp, but I managed Not to slide out butt ass naked onto the busy park field.
Get a Rubbermaid 2 quart rectangular section bottle they are cheap, hard to tip over and enough room for an elephant to piss in. Clean it out with bleach crystals and water. Also wide mouth so more convenient than a Gatorade bottle. If you're a woman you can fit a silicone funnel into the opening and your set. You can get them at any Target, etc. or online at Amazon.

Water container of some sort.
There are many shapes and sizes, you can either plan your build around the big building blocks like the bed, cooler, and water jug, or you can put the water jug wherever there is leftover space.
Some have spigots that are gravity fed and others have electronic pumps which are handy if you need water while you're in the vehicle. Like this one:
I use a program called Speedify to combine my different internet connections. I use the local wifi as my primary connection and my cell plans as my backup. It makes it so most of my data is going through Wifi but if there's something large or the wifi is crappy it will use some of my cellular plan to boost it. It works using a VPN to Speedify's servers and their servers determine how to break up the data streams, so you can use public wifi without worries of data interception.
This is two wifi cards, a long range booster plugged into my ethernet port, my iPhone on Verizon, my Verizon hotspot (only $15 more with a Verizon plan), and my T-Mobile Android tablet that's on the same plan you are on.
If you have room in your vehicle I would suggest that you get a lugabaloo. It’s basically a five gallon bucket with a toilet seat as the lid. It’s awesome! I live full time in my vehicle and I almost never use public restrooms. Granted I do have a minivan so I have a little more room. I just double bag it with trash bags and I use kitty litter to kill the scent. Works wonders! And it’s very comfortable too. It’s about the average height of a regular toilet. I sh*t and piss in peace errday.lugabaloo
If your laptop is usb-c powered, you're probably better off staying in DC the whole time with something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075WQQG7C/
...instead of going from DC to AC to DC again
Start here and you'll see how VASTLY different the US is from just about every other developed nation with regards to people like you and I.

I've been parked under the same bright light in the same parking lot for 90+ nights now without issue (and I have window coverings), but I honestly believe it's more to do with my car being brand new and washed everyday (I have an unl car wash pass), so the roaming patrol either thinks I work inside the establishment, or doesn't perceive me as a threat...or what I'm really hoping for -- they simply don't give a shit about me being there.
Go Gear TABLET-A Black Automotive Tablet Holder https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OMRMTVU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_R45QFXCYXQ4V8YZYH7WE
I've gotten almost daily use out of this thing. I hang it on my steering wheel to watch media or use it as a tray to hold things while I'm transitioning to the back of my truck. I also have a bungee cord running across the top of the camper lid on which I'll hang the tablet holder so I can watch media laying down.
I've had it for three years. It's showing wear but still holding strong so definitely worth it.
I have this from Amazon for $20. I hang it off the ol "oh shit" handle which is about 4 inches from my head when I sleep. The lowest setting goes all night and has worked to keep me cool enough to sleep so far. As it gets hotter, I may have to turn it up but we'll see. I put it on the charger first thing when I get up so it's definitely good to go each night.
Also, I use a small wash cloth, get it fairly wet, fold it up and put it on my forehead/neck. It's just room temp water but it still helps a lot.
What I use is Speedify. I use my iphone and hotspot as my primary connections, and my android tablet as my backup connection. It bonds them all together into one connection. The bonus feature is that with some little hacks it doesn't use my iphone hotspot plan.

Even if you found a 150W immersion heater…
It would take a while to heat anything
It would likely burn out your 150W inverter in a few uses - cheap inverters are best run at most 3/4 of their rating, or half if a really cheap chinese inverter
The fuse for your 12volt outlet in the vehicle will likely blow. A 150W output inverter draws 15-25% more than 150 watts on the 12v side. More depending on how cheap it is.
Better to use a 12v immersion heater like this https://smile.amazon.com/RoadPro-RPBH-012-Black-Automotive-Accessories/dp/B001AQZI64/
Warning - all of these are made in china and will burn out after 20-30 uses. So, buy multiple of them at a time.
I found something life changing recently.
It's a 3" bamboo mattress topper. It's heavenly in this heat.
I put it on top of a memory foam, which is on top of a self-inflating camping pad, with bamboo sheets. I'm beating the heat.
Better yet, get some Shade Sox so you can bring your windows down even farther for more airflow.
It might be easier to carry canned meats than to keep fresh meat frozen for days on end. Canned chicken, beef, pork, etc, is shelf stable, fully cooked, tastes pretty good, easily available at walmart and would cost less after cooler, ice, and cooking fuel is factored in. I keep at least one can of each in my vehicle. Do remember to pick up a decent can opener. My favorite is the EZ Duz It although I use a side-cutting opener when I want to re-close a can for some reason.
If you do decide on frozen meats then dry ice will make it easier to keep them hard-frozen, though I'd watch ventilation carefully as it sublimates to CO2. Maybe store the cooler in the trunk?
I did this with a yoga mat under it Olee Sleep Tri-Folding Memory Foam Topper, 4'' H, Blue https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0742B6F1H/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_QZC71F15EVPAYAKG8S26?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
It fits perfectly on the 60 part of the 60/40 split and also fits in the trunk folded perfectly if you need to use the back seat for people
I use (2) Goal Zero Sherpa 100 AC. They don't have 400W as what you stated, but it works wonders for me. It can charge thru the lighter port, solar or directly thru an AC outlet if available. With this setup I keep all of my electronics topped off and with solar charging, I don't need to have my car running all the time which is esp useful when I'm just parked for a few hours during the day.
https://www.amazon.com/Goal-Zero-Sherpa-Portable-Power/dp/B07HFHTGX3/
Depends on a number of factors like ambient humidity, do you sleep with your windows cracked, etc...
I try to apply it once a week, and use it in concert with rain guards (another $25 amazon purchase that made a HUGE difference)
The end result is less than perfect but still quite an improvement. With low humidity and cracked windows, you can wake up without any interior fog at all. With active rain and cracked windows, you still get 1 - 4 hours before fog starts (long enough for anyone who might notice fogged windows and object to a car camper to forget about you. Perfect for attempting a new residential parking spot overnight or spending a few hours in the back of a parking lot without drawing any attention). If you are running a portable fan, even better.
Either way, it's lower profile and less time spent blasting the heater first thing in the morning.
Does anyone have experiences with eVan-Life and can compare it to Van Life?

180w is a non-issue for an alternator while driving. The alternator may or may not like making that much power while idling. My guess is that it does not consume 180w while off and charging.
If the inverter in the vehicle is MSW I'd feel the laptop power supply regularly to make sure it's not overheating. Not all work well on MSW. If it gets hot or fails to work properly on MSW a PSW inverter or just a car charger for it (generic version) would be warranted.
The nuclear option would be running wiring for a small pure sine wave inverter (250w-300w) from the battery into the cabin, and use that while driving.
check out these boxes for clothing/storage. the reindeer ones on sale for good price, the clear are my fav tho

> Maybe I'll get a jetboil then
Jetboils are neat technology, but $$ up front and the fuel cost (isobutane) is the most expensive stove fuel I know of. They are also made specifically for boiling water (hence the name) and may not be as flexible for normal cooking.
Something like this is 3x cheaper up front and 3x cheaper to run (when running on propane). It has adapters to run on propane and butane. Butane tends to cost more than propane but it's nice to have options.
I had that one and loved it. Mine died, but I might try another. Right now I'm testing this one - but it's huge for car living!
MENSI Propane Gas Camping Stove Adapter 1LB Small Tank Convert to EN417 Bottle Thread 7/16" Brass Adapter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QRP34BF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_CP416JRN44B5C45MQ14X
Get one of these. It adapts the green coleman cans down to the 7/16th fitting that camp stoves use.
> I have a butane single burner stove. I don't use the stove bc it's such a confined space.
A small windscreen can help when cooking outdoors on a picnic bench in a park or whatever. My traveling partner uses this one. Folds flat when not in use.
of course people have experience with this and the answers are all out there if you're willing to look for them.
BUT 50% of this country reads below an 8th grade reading level, so here we are.
running things off your starter battery isn't a good idea, even if it "works".
these are best deal i can find on lifepo4 batteries
i've got two of those for 72ah & my bank was down to 94% this morning after running a fridge and cellular booster for ~12hrs.
like others have mentioned, get a dc-dc charger, a battery, and you're pretty much good to go...much more effective (both for cost & practicality) than the power banks people are getting
avoid an inverter if at all possible, converting from dc to ac & back to dc (Which is what happens when you're running something like your laptop off an inverter) incurs ~30% conversion penalty.
getting a straight-DC/car laptop charger is worth it, to not need to size everything else up to accommodate the conversion losses.
Something like this could work...
Last August, my city was hit with a huge wind storm and we were without power for 12 days. I was able to get something similar to this from Amazon that included a small panel, a radio, a small light, and ports for charging devices. It worked really well the entire time. I've since taken it camping a few times and it works great.
Take what LiveInTransit said and add in a 4" inline duct grow room fan. Just put a screened inlet somewhere and no window needs opened.

You don't need to drive your car since these phone chargers don't use a lot of power. If your battery is in good health you can leave the engine off. If you're using other electronics that are using a lot of power you might have to turn your engine on. No need to drive
That looks uncomfortable. I’ve camped, glamped, and car camped a lot and air mattresses are my least favorite to sleep on for various reasons. I use this in my minivan and I love it. It’s comfy and you can fold it up into a seat to make more room in your vehicle. It’s pricey but worth it.
> My Prius, if the smart key is enabled, will not lock the driver door period. This is to prevent you from accidentally locking your keys in the car, but is a bitch if car dwelling. I have to manually disable smart key every night to safely sleep, and some nights I'm too exhausted to remember.
I use this for my smart key when I'm sleeping in my car:
You can buy a big electric power supply and plug in to a small heater. Also get a smart outlet to plug in the heater too so you can turn it on with a touch on your phone. Get a heated jacket and a heated blanket and you’re good. You can also get solar panels to lay on your dash to recharge the battery or plug it in to the car when you’re driving. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07XFLDF7C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabt1_X9XXFb0ADQVGJ
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B071HLNG14/
You can put something like that up on your car windows. I know it's Amazon and you don't have your own place, but they should have similar products in local stores around your area. Just make sure you don't violate any window tint laws.
Folding mattress on Amazon $69. I use it and it’s more comfortable than my old bed. I use an Olee 4” thick one for months. Don’t listen to this other bullshit these cats don’t know what they’re talking about- you don’t want a stupid twin size mattress clogging up your car.
Here’s what I use:
You can buy 12v crock pots. They work as good as a small crock pot.

RoadPro 12V Portable Stove https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000ES5Y1I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_au6FFbZFVHBXH
The cooker takes like an hour or 2 to cook a piece of meat. But it’s a little oven that runs off a 12v plug.
I also recently bought this car organizer bag. Hasn't arrived from Amazon yet but I'll let you know if it's good when I use it.
I have one like this and I really like the timer.
If you can afford it and have a USB charger you can buy some rechargeable hand warmers and stick them in your sock after you double them up (sock, warmer, other sock) so it's not on your skin. Or you could buy the hand warmers that are at the gas station. But I think a double rechargeable is only like $30, since I've been looking for it myself. And definitely look into this thing... It's used with truckers a lot... It's a little lunch bag looking thing that will heat up meals slowly. Potentially using it while you're running your car. I think something like this. https://www.amazon.com/HOTLOGIC-Portable-Electric-Personal-Reheating/dp/B074TYC7DY/ref=asc_df_B074TYC7DY/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=198057551909&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9993061987209756801&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvq...
Oof! Not all funnels are created equal. the gogirl was mishap-central for me but the Ella pee was much user friendly 👍 CVS and vons usually has a buy one get one free deal on their vitamins. This oneis a high dose one on Amazon is $3.99 currently. But sunlight in soCal is free and plentiful—definitely take advantage. And talk nicely to/about yourself. Keeping some positive mantras/affirmations fresh in your mind can give self doubts the beat down they deserve. I wish you the very best <3
I would definitely recommend a sleeping bag suit — basically a onesie made out of sleeping bag material. Last year, I ordered a Selk’bag on Amazon for $100, but it looks like they’ve doubled in price recently. There are off-brands that are much cheaper. This one seemsto be pretty decent.
Seriously; get one. I live in a travel trailer, and though it doesn’t get terribly cold where I live, it does get cold enough, and I basically live in this thing during the winter.
If you do it well it doesn’t attract more attention, just looks like someone has a dark tint. I just got some blackout black curtains at Walmart. Then I got some doubles sided Velcro and put it in my door frame and curtains cut to size. Easy on and off.
I also have rain guards that I stuck on which are a life saver. Now I can leave my window down a little and not have people see me.
I have a rechargeable fan that pulls fresh air in from the window, clamped on to the ceiling handle. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B093F68NM6/
I like to watch live music. I pretty much only go to the cheap venues because the expensive venues almost never have anything I wanna see. Even if I only have a passing interest, I go see a band. One reason why I live in my car is so I can see live music more often. So that's been working out well. I talk to the bands after the show and have formed friendships with some musicians by talking about their music in a positive manner, encouraging them, and talking about music in general.
I also do night cycling and night photography. I like to cycle around at night work up a sweat while seeing the city at night (Kansas City is my main area). Sometimes I cycle and photograph (usually with a go-pro).
I also like to visit abandoned buildings at night. The chilliness makes it more interesting that way.
Meetup.com is where I meet various people. I go to any event I have passing interest in. I meet like minded people thru that. Many of them like to spend time with me outside meetup groups. So I've spent time with meetup people as well on weekends outside the normal group events.
When I lived in my car, I had two of these. Those are the most quiet, powerful ones I've found that aren't crazy expensive. Nice noise, but they run on low setting for six hours.

I think the OP means something like this: Arzopa Portable Monitor, 15.6''... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B093GCL18V?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
They have the 13 and 15 inch version, and it is USB C powered. You can just get a dongle to both mirror the phone and charge. I have one and use for work from my laptop, I like it because I do not have to power the monitor separately. Hope this helps.
Perhaps my nomenclature is wrong. I meant 10- and 12-point versions of these. Wheel Handles, maybe. If anyone knows the common name please advise.
FWIW, I have gotten more use from them than from the silcock key.
Like these things? I wonder if I can modify it somewhat just for the interior windows. That way it doesn't look like someone is living in the car from the outside.

Being comfortable:
There are lots of offbrand ones. I got this one (hate amazon but it was really the only place to get a cheap offbrand one like this). I got it with the solar panel combo but they sell it alone.
It's not as huge as some power banks, but it has ac and dc, and works fine to run my string of LEDs at night, charge my laptop a few times, charge my phone, etc. It charges fine via car cig outlet or normal outlet (or solar panel)

A standard marine deep cycle battery is still using lead acid technology. Its honestly terrible and very expensive
Only half of the amp hours are usable, still.
So a 200ah results in only 100 being usable

I got the idea from tiktok to use an insulated water bottle so (a) it’s leak proof and (b) I can carry it into any bathroom and discretely dump it in the toilet when the bathroom is empty. I use a wide mouth 64oz (after trial and error I learned I have a supersized bladder) like this.
These are good quality. They last a long time and are very quiet. Mount it anywhere too
Got me through a lot of hot months living in my car. I bought two, actually

I wish that I could keep it in the car, but with the summer heat, not sure how often I would have to charge the power station. Then I’m thinking that I may get two power stations, so I can charge one while the other one stays plugged. Haven’t decided on which power station. Have been looking at the Jackery 500 and 1000 and the Okmo 1000. Would be getting the solar panels as well.
I have this toilet and use it with kitty litter and plastic bags.

I just received the folding portable toilet I ordered from Amazon. I am about 200 lbs and it's pretty sturdy and supports me comfortably. Line it with a small trash bag, toss in some kitty litter, and I'm literally good to go.
I have a great pour over maker that makes about a thermos full:

And it works really well with this AV water heater that plugs into the cigarette lighter:

Hope that helps. Now that I'm back in a bricks and sticks situation, I still use the coffee maker. I just microwave my water now! I love that it doesn't use a filter.

Absolutely!!! I got these (2 in a package) in a size L for the rear windows on my 2010 Buick Enclave and they fit like a glove! The bottom doesn’t need any type of reinforcement because the elastic edge lays flat.

These worked great for me.
Oh man they're so cool here's the one I ordered I haven't gotten it yet but I'm very excited to. Definately high tech but if you like cooking or baking it's huge.
Spend $150 on making your vehicle more comfortable (i.e a slight build if you don't have on already, a mini vent small enough to plug the hole with fiberglass once you've finished living this lifestyle, or getting a battery electric blanket set up). I want to reiterate that you really shouldn't go over $150, but that's just my opinion.
If you can afford it or similar. You could get pull ring personal alarm for 10$ and build easy trip wire alarm as well.
I tried to in my original comment… hopefully this works. Aootek Solar Lights 120 LEDs with Lights Reflector,270 Degree Wide Angle, IP65 Waterproof, Security Lights for Front Door, Yard, Garage, Deck(4pack)
So sorry.
You gotta get my “early warning system”— Solar Motion Lights
I have one above each door (2door SUV), one on the back, on facing the hood. If someone gets within 2” of my vehicle, a very bright light goes off in their eyes. Very effective deterrent.
I imagine only cops would not be intimidated, so you would have the answer to your “knock” question.
Ideal Security Motion Sensor Door Alarm, Charcoal Gray Can add as many additional sensors. I'd buy at least 1 more for bare minimum of 2. Then can play around with how setup car to best cover. Prop them off ground with whatever or can even place on car. Just test by walking around to see. Can be tricky but works. It works up to couple hundred feet away so I've placed it at front of a driveway that leads to something like an electrical substation tucked away from street. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HD53J02/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_YPEJ9YJED325SNE7QNS2
Also I have heard the sleeping bags the Military uses that come in layers are really good for cold temperatures and can be adjusted by removing a layer for warmer temperatures.
They are called modular sleeping bags: here is one for instance but I have no idea if this particular product is anygood: https://www.amazon.com/MT-Military-Modular-Sleeping-Multicam/dp/B08KZN6H16/ref=sr\_1\_2?keywords=modular+sleeping+bag&qid=1644264589&s=sporting-goods&sprefix=modular+slee%2Csporting%2C70&sr=1-2
Then this one? Unisex potty urinal
It should be about that, if not your intake may be too low. Slide, from here. (Page 21) 700ml total loss via the lungs per day for an average adult. Of course it depends on how long you sleep but the average adult exhales 700ml per day, whether you believe it or not. As you can see there's also an additional 200ml per day via sweat, which of course a portion will be as you sleep.
Litter won't work for moisture. I used a cracked window, battery operated fan and damp rid in my small RV. When I had power, I used a small dehumidifier. I suppose if you have a converter like this you can order one of these (probably cheaper on Amazon). These are the dehumidifiers I used in the RV. One would be good for a car.
I attach a battery fan to the handle at the top of the window and slowly pull air in from the window crack

I use this every 2-3 days. I shave my beard and head. Going on 6 months strong. Right now i have 1 on it for "winter" here in the bay area. Summer I use zero to .5

If you're just doing small amounts of liquid, maybe an immersion heater?
Electric, fast, and about $12.

No sharp edges and the lid seals. Doggie style.
Maybe try this... Its a bucket with a toilet seat... You could cut the bottom of the bucket off trimming the height down bucket and use a thicker garbage bag to pee into... Then take said pee bag and put in another container for disposal. I've used these and they are cheap and great. I transfer garbage bags to two lg ziploc bags and then put in garbage can.

It hisses due to the pressure being released. It's fine. They are not an explosive hazard when used properly. Don't over think this too much, they've been in use for a very long time. I'd recommend caps like these for storing your propane canisters:
