I rarely see anything about Kawai Ritsu from Bokura wa minna kawaisou It's still one of the best characters HanaKana voiced to date, and the anime itself was amazing. Ritsu is obviously very high up the best girl list (best, best girl is Holo, but I wouldn't call her underappreciated ;))
They're inherently slow and cannot dive. So long that a monoplane doesn't get in a turn fight and keeps its speed up, it should win. The Chaika is only OP against pilots that get sloppy about that.
Nothing too surprising. For reference, here are how other websites ranked their top 10.

Let's do some cliche harem roles and defaults.
/r/askreddit
...would be that guy, you know? That one dick character who tells ghost stories in the middle of the night to his group of friends and brags about things he totally did? That would be /r/askreddit, a little misguided, endearing and a doofus, but most of all the lead's supportive best friend.
/r/eyebleach
...would be dere as hell. An angel. She'd have a thing for animals. Air-headed and sweet, she'd be oblivious to everything that could potentially threaten her innocence. Someone gave a heartfelt comment? Somebody died? Too bad. "What did you say?"
<em>Why did you have to change?</em>
I just want to see them happy. Is it too much to ask?
Such a powerful scene. And it's so nice to see best girl again
Also, it seems like they're setting up for [Manga Spoilers](/s "Anteiku Raid")
It's about nonsensical situations involving airsoft basically. The whole show is no context scenes, and if there is a plot I personally can't follow it. It's pretty funny though. It's a good watch when you just want to laugh. It's on Crunchyroll (although this scene is from the newest episode so you'll need a premium account to watch it)
as mentioned before is an exact match for what you are looking for but you have them all marked as "won't watch". your entire "won't watch" list is of popular shows.
is about the only other show that will fit your criteria.
God bless Madhouse, I'm insanely glad they redid Hideo Shiimada's character design. In the manga you could tell he was cold and brute but I always hated the way he looked.
Picture of what Hideo looked like in the Manga.
I would like to point out that Shou Tucker, the guy who did that to his daughter, is one of the most hated characters in all of anime by some metrics. Almost no-one likes him, and huge numbers of people hate him. It was a brutal episode of the anime.
I think there are these people that "like anime because it's cool" and watch all the mainstream crap that plays every week just because it's a popular anime, like naruto, where they just keep dumping out stuff because it sells.
But, if you just like a good show/film/story, then without forcing yourself just to watch it because it's anime, then there are a lot of amazing shows.
www.anidb.net This site should help you a lot with finding highly rated shows, filtering out shows into categories you seem to like, finding other animes you may like from other animes etc (anime planet can also be good for recommendations from other animes, although sometimes people do pair two animes together weirdly).
I'll leave you with two very well made films (by the same director) that you are bound to love. The girl who leapt through time and summer wars.
If you watch these two and do find them to be exceedingly good, then feel free to PM me or whatever for more stuff that is actually worth watching (like you found with howl's moving castle) as I also had a time where I watched a LOT of stuff and wouldn't mind sharing my finds.
Seriously, I want to kill him myself, that little bitch. And I would care if he died, by care, I mean happy.
For more major characters, that only ones I can see dying without fitting into the categories is Connie or Sasha.
Give Welcome to the NHK a try. Both shows are about characters who are socially-awkward and trying to find their place in the world. Both shows also deal with being lonely and dealing with the consequences of the decisions and mistakes that we have to make in life. NHK is considerably darker and a much more fleshed out story. If character development is what you're after, NHK is a classic.
Rurouni Kenshin - I like anything related to the Tokugawa - Meiji period, as well as factions like the Shinsengumi, Choshu and Satsuma. Also, the anime is part of my childhood memories :P
When I take personal reasons into account, Masami Iwasawa from Angel Beats. Her story is very powerful and relevant to me, and is what truly made me fall in love with the series.
More generally, Kurisu Makise (Steins;Gate). Cliché choice, but I can't help it, she's so entertaining, and she makes up half of [Spoiler?](/s "my favorite romance in a non-romance series.")
Runners up are Taiga, Holo, and Nagato.
A pretty famous manga series that's spawned so many memes you've probably used some of them yourself without realizing it.
It's had a resurgence recently as a rather brilliant anime adaptation finally came out a couple of years ago.
This post is parodying a rather iconic scene from the second season of the anime, which was basically the first thing a lot of people thought of when they first saw Yellow Diamond in the extended OP. It's suspected this was an intentional nod.
Kazuhisa Kiryu seems to be pretty competent and intelligent, being able to pull off various shit, as seen in the latest episode(s) of Classroom Crisis.
http://www.anime-planet.com/anime/tags/post-apocalyptic
There are dozens and dozens of post apocalyptic anime, many of which are not set in high school. I liked Blue Sub No. 6, Fist of the North Star, Blue Gender, Dominion Tank Police, Freedom, Gargantia, Now and Then here and There, To the New World and Tide Line Blue.
The storyteller from Yami Sibai
The look combined with the sound of his voice is a bit unsettling. Especially as the show progresses, since the tone of his voice changes just slightly each time.
Since people have already mentioned most of the wheelchair bound characters I would have: [Charlotte](/s "Nao's brother may count for mental? As well as another few characters for blindness")
Also, Anime Planet has tags for Disabled, wheelchair and blind
Ryuugajou Nanana no Maizoukin|ANN|[MAL](http://myanimelist.net/anime/21561/Ryuugajou_Nanana_no_Maizoukin_(TV)|[AP](http://www.anime-planet.com/anime/ryuugajou-nanana-no-maizoukin)|
The more and more i look at wick, he looks nothing like keanu
edit: He looks more like togame from psycho-pass
pic
Acts abit like him too.
I think overkill might have based their wick from him
Personally, I prefer AnimePlanet. It seems to offer the same functionality and recommendations as MyAnimeList, but it a neater, more polished way. (I'm benrr101 on there)
a kyubey perhaps? Madara?. here's a pink one
Are you looking for a quick slice of comedy? I'd like to recommend Tonari no Seki-kun: The Master of Killing Time. Released in 2014, and made by Shinei Animation (the studio responsible for Doraemon), it's a short series of 21 episodes, each episode spanning about 7 minutes. It features popular seiyu, Kana Hanazawa, as Rumi Yokoi, a high school student who is constantly distracted by Seki-kun, a classmate that sits beside her at the back of the classroom. Seki rarely pays attention to the school lessons, and instead, focuses on his desk where he sets up imaginative and often elaborate activities that seem to have no limit in their creativity. The humour works really well for such a simple story premise it's very family friendly (not surprising, considering the studio). There's no over-the-top gags or reliance on tired bawdy jokes. Good solid comedy and with such short episodes, there's little time commitment required to get through the series.
Recommendations Tuesdays is easily my favourite megathread of the week, but one of the side effects of regularly following these threads is that my list of anime to watch has crept up in size. If anyone would like to help prioritize my Want-to-watch list:
Umm... well the obvious answer is Legend of the Galactic Heroes. It's pretty much the pinnacle of space opera.
Crest of the Stars is also pretty good.
Zipang - lots of naval military stuff. The anime is very realistic, with input by the real JDF I believe.
Another naval manga: The Silent Service, about a rogue Japanese nuclear sub, but I haven't read it so I don't know how good it is. It made some press due to its controversial subject matter (rogue commander wants return of imperial Japan).
Very old school and a bit silly but a classic: Area 88 about mercenary fighter pilots in the Middle East.
Black Lagoon: more mercenaries, this time in the south pacific. I dropped it because it got too silly at times (especially plot armor for certain characters), but some of the combat is really cool.
Mobile Suit Gundam: 08th MS Team -- it's got the typical Gundam tropes and melodrama, but it has some of the best small unit fighting scenarios in the Gundam universe (as well as most anime). Just after that is MSG: 0083 has some good mixed unit battles (08th MS recycles some of the scenarios a bit).
I'm sure there's more.
Pumpkin Scissors (I haven't read this one)
Found a weblist of some more:
http://www.anime-planet.com/manga/tags/military
Oh, and Matsumoto (of Captain Harlock fame) also did military manga about WWII....a ha: Battlefield which was turned into an anime called "The Cockpit". Wow, I haven't seen that in years.
I think he also did a comic about a Ghost pilot, an avenging pilot (who may or may not have died ala Pale Rider), who comes back to assist the Japanese in WWII. (yes, it is somewhat controversial topic as it shows an alternate view on a policy that is documented even on the History channel--many times if a Japanese troop ship or submarine was sunk, or airplane downed, the US shot any survivors in the sea in order to reduce the possibility of any getting back to the war effort; there is a good History channel doc where they interview and show film of American sailors who were ordered to shoot men at sea like fish in a barrel).
Haha I didn't think about the eyebrow-color but you are right. It's definitely her face-shape. In the anime she's got a longer face. There is a greater distance between her mouth and nose and her chin is more pointed.
Gintama starts out a bit slow which is why people tend to drop it. But if you stick with it, I guarantee you won't regret it. I also put off Gintama 5 or 6 times and when I finally decided to sit down and watch it the summer after graduating high school, it eventually became my favorite anime of all time.
If the length of the show is really putting you off, then I'd suggest watching Sket Dance instead. The MC here also fits your request (not as well as Gintoki) but they share the same humor and layout.
But seriously Gintama is worth it if you have the time.
EDIT: Words
The 50 episodes of Cross Game. I started it after seeing people praising it here on r/anime, and they were damn right! After very ep I was like "well, that's a great show".
There's a bunch of solutions out there, like MyAnimeList, Anime Planet and AniDB. Personally, I prefer MAL because its UI is the simplest and most intuitive to use.
Excellent series.
These episodes are fillers / recap, and can be skipped entirely (in fact, I recommend it), as they do not develop the story in any way, and the series continues as if they never happened.

I'm not assuming that what you're thinking I am. I'm presenting statistics and making the logical conclusion that the opinion of YLIA being bad is unpopular. You can keep saying that the statisitics don't mean anything, but you're just ignoring the facts and only accepting confirmation bias. When every popular (english) anime site loves the show, then not liking it is 100% an unpopular opinion no matter how you look at it.
I knew someone who was there. He wrote up his story about it, It's quite chilling to read. He obviously survived.
I can't imagine losing someone like you and your friend did. I hope she's not blaming herself in any way, survivor's guilt is all too common.
I get it's hard to not judge it by its name so I'll also suggest this. Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon (Or DanMachi for short) is a great anime.
> I wouldn't even say that Taiga is a tsundere.
When I google for "Tsundere" I find a wikipedia page with Taiga's name in it, her as tsundere on tvtropes and one of her tags on anime-planet is "tsundere". I'm fairly sure she is a tsundere.
> If every time Team Rocket got sent hurling into the stratosphere it was taken literally then there would be a lot more murderers in Pokemon.
Then again, that's a completely different series, where we let powerful monsters fight each other, and where said Team Rocket gets 10k volt to their face almost every episode.
JJBA: Where does Jotaro's hat end and his hair begin?
Yes, I've watched the latest episodes. They only made me ask more detailed forms of this question.
Full Metal Panic! It's a fun comedy/action/romance in an alternative future where the Cold War continued on + giant robots. Story centers on a secret organization of mercenaries that accepts contracts to intervene against various military forces/terrorists/criminals. Has a great blend of action and comedy; it's not as introspective and plot driven as Ghost in the Shell or Psycho-Pass, but very fun to watch. Has dubs, but I can't speak to their quality as I've only ever watched it untranslated.
First manga: Black http://static.zerochan.net/Tokyo.Kushu.full.1793937.jpg
Anime: Indigo http://www.anime-planet.com/images/characters/touka_kirishima_54381.jpg
Second manga (:re): Light silvery blue, with a faint purple tint http://41.media.tumblr.com/e458ded0f2140ebfa20288e8485d1674/tumblr_nkwp77oRrQ1r27xuyo1_400.jpg
In some official colored manga images Touka's hair has a slight blue tint, but it's generally colored black. The anime gave her indigo hair, though its saturation varies a bit, and sometimes looks either violet or navy blue in some scenes. In :re, her hair seems to have been dyed to resemble Yomo's in color, though it seems to have a faintly more purple tint than his.
You have so many great shows to look forward to! I don't even know where to start, so here's a couple:
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - This one is a classic and considered one of the best. Definitely thought provoking.
Hataraku Maou-sama! - A very popular comedy, with a classic fish-out-of-the-water premise.
Drop everything and watch: <strong>Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo</strong>
aka "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time"
It's exactly what you're after, and it's a fantastic movie!
IMO Anime Planet is better than MAL when it comes to an anime database. I like the website design better. I just find it overall more useful than MAL.
But when it comes to manga I fine [MAL](www.myanimelist.net) much better than Anime Planet. MAL has a lot better manga database.
I've heard a lot of arguments about which one is better, my solutions is to use both. So if you don't find MAL all that useful try Anime Planet out.
Mayoi Chiki: Dude is traumatised by women
The World God Only Knows: Dude just wants to play games
Tenchi Muyo!: Dude knows bitches be crazy
Nisekoi: Dude you gotta watch this shit
Also how much do you need them to want none of it. Uninterested? Hates it? Its annoying? I'm assuming you want them to come around to it at some point or why would you watch it? Unless thats the 'joke' Theres my recommendations if you truly want to go down a harem rabbit hole there ya go http://www.anime-planet.com/anime/tags/harem
Well for me it's Renge. I mean she's a first grader. How could you see her in a sexual way?
There's a character that i find similar to Ozai in a manga called My hero academia, heck his power is fire based. He essentially had a son so he could breed him to become the no.1 hero. He was always no.2 in the world so if his son became no.1 it would feel like his achievement. Guys a fucking asshole. To top it off his son has a scar as well.
Da da da dum... Now and Then, Here and There. It's underrated I think as it's actually pretty good but you don't hear too much about it. A contender for the darkest anime ever made and it has plenty of post-apocalyptic goodness.
Man, there really aren't many. Galactic heroes that /u/Willes_ mentioned is about it as far as I know. Especially in a non-scifi setting... it's just not a very popular subject for anime. Maybe more in movies like Grave of the Fireflies, I haven't watched as many anime movies.
Here's a few sorta-kindas. I'm hoping some others can give more recommendations, because I like this sort of thing as well.
/u/eziosc5 convinced me to watch The IDOLM@STER by saying that Ritsuko is basically human Eina Tulle. Speaking of Eina, she is the reason I started Danmachi.
Baka to test is so fucking strange (yet hilarious) that I don't think a very similar anime exists.
If you're looking for jus an Ecchi/comedy show, maybe Shokugeki no Soma can fill the void. It's different, sure, but it's a great show, and it does have both Ecchi and comedy.
If you want a long adventure, try One Piece.
In terms of character development, One Piece is one of the tops. One Piece is also set around the notion of Adventure.
Black Lagoon - It's got guns, guns, and more guns! Also one of the best female characters from any series, in my opinion, and while action is the main focus, the story is intelligent and thoughtful.
Mirai Nikki is exactly what you're looking for.
>Yuki is a disaffected middle school boy who has no dreams or goals in life; in fact, the only thing he has is his diary. Writing down everything he observes and documenting every thought, the young boy uses it as an outlet for his imagination. One morning, however, Yuki wakes up to find his cell phone filled with diary entries for the next ninety days. Thinking nothing of it, he continues his morning until he begins to realize that everything on his phone is rapidly coming to pass, and it isn't just mere coincidence. Now, Yuki suddenly finds himself thrust into a survival game against other future diary owners to become the new Lord of Time.
(From here)
Kamisama Hajimemashita aka Kamisama Kiss - adventures of a girl turned god with shipping in EVERY episode almost.
Akatsuki no Yona aka Yona of Dawn - a lot of shipping/adventure
Ao No Exorcist aka Blue Exorcist - doesn't have shipping in it really to me but awesome none the less.
InuYasha - adventure and shipping
You wrote Fullmetal Alchemist...does this mean the first anime, or Brotherhood? If you haven't seen brotherhood I highly suggest you watch it.
Sailor Moon has a new anime now called Sailor Moon Crystal, its pretty awesome.
This is a pretty awesome site. Sign up and put in all the anime you have watched and it will give you suggestions on what to watch next.
Other anime I would suggest is:
The Irregular at Magic Highschool
Gurren Lagann
Gundam Wing
Trigun
I was browsing Anime Planet building up my list of stuff to watch and I had seen Hyperdimension Neptunia under their list. I thought the characters looked cute so I tagged it as Want to Watch.
Then a few weeks later, I saw Re;Birth1 went up onto Steam. I was like "Wait a second. This uses the same name as the Animation. I didn't know there were games for this." So I decided to watch the Animation before I played the Game, since I rarely ever played JRPGs growing up, and rarely like them.
It was confusing at first, but it grew on me, and I really loved it. Played Re;Birth1 afterwards. Loved it. Watched a friend play the original HDN. Did not like that at first, but all the Dialogue in that caught me even more.
So even though I spoiled myself with some Victory spoilers from the Animation, it was worth it in the end, especially since I have a Purple Heart poster up in my room, and hopefully a PS3 / PS4 in the next several months so I can play more HDN.
Grave of Fireflies is about as depressing as they come. But I warn you......its sad and heartbreaking. Watch at the expense of your own tears.
If your not in the mood for tears, a REALLY good anime that depicts normal life is Bunny Drop.
Here's a few...
I don't have any examples from Fairytail but here is Satsuki and Ryuko and Kobeni. That's pretty much all I could find.
If no one can solve it here, try x-posting to /r/Animesuggest and flair your post with "Identification".
If you want you can scan through this list and try and see if any of the characters look familiar: http://www.anime-planet.com/characters/tags/goggles
Comedy and Drama tags are too ubiquitous to make a proper search.
I suspect anime-planet might be a better tool for this case.
Right off the bat though, Nodame Cantabile, Bakemonogatari, Ouran High School Host Club, Chihayafuru.
I can suggest some anime with samurai, but I can't really say any of them are like samurai champloo, you will just have to settle for rewatching it.
as for good samurai anime in general, I suggest Rurouni Kenshin:Tsuiokuhen
http://myanimelist.net/anime/44/Rurouni_Kenshin:_Tsuiokuhen
Even if you don't like the original Rurouni Kenshin anime, you should still watch this OVA because it is better than the anime and has a completely different feel to it.
Many people will suggest the original Rurouni Kenshin anime, which is fine, I don't think its bad but there are several things about it that bug me. None of which are in the OVA.
http://myanimelist.net/anime/2418/Sword_of_the_Stranger is also a good samurai movie.
Last but not least, this site usually gives good suggestions http://www.anime-planet.com/anime/samurai-champloo
I hadn't heard of this one before, sounds interesting thoughTrain Man
I've had this on my to-read-list for ages Sunshine Sketch
There's my suggestionies :)
Last summer I created a couple ZimP variants: Steampunk in my Pocket and High School of the Dead in my Pocket.
Delve the dice game is pretty fun.
May I suggest To Aru Kagaku no Railgun? It's a spin-off of To Aru Majutus no Index, which is also decent. I just think Railgun is put together a bit better. You might want to at least watch Index s1 first, you won't miss too much if you don't, but a couple characters show up in railgun; it's nice to know who they are.
Recently I saw this upvoted comment about how the LoL community has become worse because it now has more anime fans... thinking back to S1 especially /r/LeagueOfLegends was WAY more interested in anime. Which is also shared by the old Riot staff and players (not 100% sure if that's genuinely his list, but I did pick up Angel Beats after hearing Froggen say that it's his fav).
Whatever developments there were in the LoL community, an increase in anime-affiinity is none of them. And yet somehow it has become a way more contested topic, which I absolutely can't understand.
You can look at their TVTropes pages and find shared tropes. I notice right away that they have Bitch in Sheep's Clothing in common (lol).
You can also look on Anime Planet, which provides you a list of "similar characters" for any character you look up. I have no idea what criteria they use to determine how similar two characters are though.
Fist of the North Star synopsis: Kenshiro walks around post-nuclear-apocalypse world, literally exploding people with his fists.
In this scene from one of the movies we see Kenshiro cut a building in half, get shot with a crossbow, then squeeze a guy's head until it explodes and finally he deftly causes the other bad guys to explode into bits.
or maybe Tatsumi Saiga
Not many curly haired anime characters, and I'm not baby faced like Amuro.
Japanese -- Kazuya Nakai as well as Tomokazu Sugita.
English -- Liam O'Brien
Definitely check out <strong>RahXephon</strong>. There are some parallels between that show and NGE. Quite and elaborate and complex story for a series disguised as a mech show.
<strong>Eureka 7</strong> - Big epic sci fi series with a unique take on mechs.
<strong>RahXephon</strong> - Similar in some ways to NGE and generated similar levels of hype when it came out. I thought it was quite good and presented a fresh look in a big shonen series.
Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple almost exactly as you described. It has comedy in it, but it is EXCELLENT. And its on netflix. go now.
Noragami- A supernatural action anime that includes deity's and shrine maidens. It isn't very much with romance, but it does have hints here and there including the male MC and the female MC.
Kamisama Hajimemashita- A romance comedy about a deity and her familiar, also includes a few shrine maidens.
I would add more, but I don't really know the others that well so here's a list of shrine maiden characters and the anime that they're from (may or may not be what you're looking for): http://www.anime-planet.com/characters/tags/shrine-maidens?page=1
anime-planet had that which I found incredibly useful. You can then have it only show the anime broadcasted in a specific season of a year or the entire year if you wish. It can be categorized by most popular but also by highest rated allowing one to view some of the less popular ones should you choose to have it sort by that.
It used to be under the anime section but they seem to have replaced it when they partnered with crunchyroll. Can't seem to find it now without doing a google search or knowing the link. Hoping they're not planning on getting rid of it completely as I found it to be one of the most useful features on the site.
Yea its not the easiest way to find stuff but its a good way to start
Edit: Yea the list shows up a lot of anime that I wouldn't exactly call 'romance', but like a said, a good place to start
Kinda hard to recommend anything when I don't know anything about what you like, so I'll just recommend a couple nice ones that are available online.
Mushishi(available on Hulu) is a nice slow-paced, anime. It has 26 episodes and is episodic which is nice for watching over an extended period since there isn't the "OMG what happens next?!" feeling.
Samurai Champloo(also on Hulu) is good if you want something with more action. There is an over-all plot but it's not in your face all of the time.
If you want my opinion on anything I've watched check this --> http://www.anime-planet.com/users/Lain542/anime
For learning more about anime I suggest Anime-Plant and/or My Anime List. Both websites have databases with info on the majority of anime out there. Both sites have some great features for finding new anime to watch.
Anyone who says they aren't is lying ;)
Obviously everyone's suggesting Clannad (and that's for a bloody reason!) but you should really watch these two as well. Kimi ni Todoke - IT'S SOO HAPPY and absolutely hilarious :'D Kaichou wa Maid-sama - One of the funniest anime I've seen as well as very romance-y (more tsundere though).
This is my face at the end of both of those.
Anyone here use a site to track their anime? Personally I prefer Anime-Planet.
I use http://www.anime-planet.com ... It isn't great for recommendations... And the forums are run by power hungry megalomaniacs. But if you just want to keep track and maybe rank you animes, it is really great!
I have recommended Hajime no Ippo many times in this subreddit. I feel like doing it to you too. :)
Watch the 3 first episodes. If you don't like it after them you can just drop it. :)
Good luck!
The reasons is that first of all, it's a very popular anime and has been for many years. Secondly, it is very easy to get in too, unlike many other animes I see recommended here... And thirdly even if you have no interest in boxing at all (like me) you will still love it for too many reasons to mention here. :)
There are a few high profile directors/creators who mostly do/did anime original works:
Satoshi Kon : Millennium Actress, Perfect Blue, and Tokyo Godfathers
Ikuhara Kunihiko: Mawaru Penguindrum and Yuri Kuma Arashi
Gen Urobuchi: Madoka Magica, and Aldonah.Zero
Masaaki Yuasa: Kaiba and Kemonozume (his adaptions of Ping Pong (manga) and The Tatami Galaxy (novel) are his most critically acclaimed works)
and here is a <em>mostly</em> accurate list of anime originals, sorted by popularity
Anime-planet has an entire character database with traits, actually. For example, that link has the trait "vampire".
AniDB also has a very similar thing that is actually more detailed than APs, I think. Here are all the characters who wear hair ribbons.
I guess it depends on how much detail OP wants to put into this.
