There's some explanation in there about why the persistent notification icon is needed.
Some useful tweaks and workarounds:
The led light is now used only for notifications and only when screen is off. If you want it as battery charging indicator you can download this app from the play store ( or another app if you find a better one) : Light flow https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rageconsulting.android.lightflowlegacy
If you want to add shortcuts to the lock screen or if you want to modify the nav bar, you can do this via the hidden system ui tuner. You can access it via this app: Ui tuner launcher https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bryancandi.android.uituner
I didn't like the stock camera app. Footej and Open Camera are way better. Google Camera ports work but they are buggy as hell.
I struggled with this too. But I found out my Moto G4 actually had a hidden unused notification light (???) that could be activated with an app.

Maybe this will give you a lead towards another solution? I had a hard time coming up with some sort of alternative. 😕 Good luck!
Lightflow ^(Android 6+) or ^5 ^and ^below
There is another version of Lightflow. I think it's called 'Lightflow legacy' in the store. I was prompted to download it when I went to install one version because it would have meant the notification was always there otherwise.

Lightflow can do it. It also can change the notification sound and the color of the notification led - from back then that was a thing. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rageconsulting.android.lightflowlegacy
The good news is that there is an app that you can get to work with Pie notifications that will technically fix the alert problems in Follow. Get Lightflow from the Play store. Setting it up isn't very difficult and you can set your own custom sound to play when the Follow app sends a notification.
I bought the pro version, but I've heard through other people on this forum that the free app works with it too.

if you don't want to do any adb command, select show silently for that app on the notification settings, then use light flow for the sound (highly customizable, i have a different sound per contact even for Snapchat)

Can totally be done using Light Flow (Legacy).
I have Charging set to Red and Green when percentage hits 100%. Makes it super easy to know when it's full when I'm getting ready in the morning.
I posted this to a similar thread yesterday:
> I actually just contacted LightFlow's customer support (which is amazing by the way, they replied in literally less then a minute) about this and he said that they had to remove the option to turn off 'Run in Foreground' because it actually causes crashing in Marshmallow because of changes to how the notification LED's work.
> He gave me a link to a blog post they made with more information: http://www.reactle.com/2015/10/changes-for-android-6-marshmallow.html
> He also gave me a link to a feature request that they made to google. Basically it asks them to make a standardized API for notification LED's so that they can get rid of the persistant notification. He asked me to 'star' it so that google takes notice. I recommend you do too: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=190997
> And finally, he also said he was going to be releasing a 'legacy' version of the app which gets rid of the notification, but will have less features. He gave me the link of where it will be posted in the future (it is not available yet): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rageconsulting.android.lightflowlegacy
There have also been issues with Ambient Display and LightFlow. I contacted the app developer about that today and he said it is a known issue that he can not currently do anything about because there isn't a manual trigger for ambient display.
He has submitted another feature request with google to fix this issue also: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=191786
As with the other issue, star this. It will make google take notice and assign a higher priority to it.

yes, that's it. I believe the free version is sufficient as well. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rageconsulting.android.lightflowlegacy
My wife and I use LightFlow Legacy. It works perfectly.
This appears to be the same battery-related light as on the Moto G Plus. If you're rooted, it may be possible to use it via the Light Flow Legacy application, although I am a bit busy and not able to test this at the moment.

I've had good luck with Light Flow Legacy on my ATT S7 Edge (snapdragon)
I had the same problem and got Light Flow to set custom vibrations for certain apps.

I've now been using Lightflow for a month now, and it works great:

I enabled the text-to-speech ("Check blood sugar alert") + sound and repeating sound using Star Trek Red Alert Klaxon sound. Works flawlessly. Granted I don't know if it's a high or a low, but either way my attention is grabbed or I'm woken up to take action. That was the whole point of custom alerts.
