This is straight out of /r/lewronggeneration. A great pc strategy game scaled down for mobile? No way that could happen today.
Unfortunately not many people pay (up front) full, or even half, game prices on mobile platforms. Though it's not completely unheard of
I would have to go with XCom. It's a good port of an excellent PC game (from a great series). I played it a lot on PC and then redid everything on mobile because I liked the game so much.
It might be better on a tablet, but it was a lot of fun and perfectly playable on my phone. (Which was either an HTC One (M8) or Samsung Galaxy S7; I forget which one.)
(I know you said, "one," but in case XCom isn't your cup of tea I'll throw in another: Vampire's Fall: Origins. It's a very well done third-person turn-based RPG.)
Definitely. If you're not set on F2P games, these are your go-tos.
XCom is just tactical, with very few RPG elements. It's got tons of turn-based tactical combat, though.
If you want a tactical RPG, Final Fantasy Tactics is the game, regardless of platform. There are all sorts of available character classes, the job system means you can mix and match different class' abilities, it's got a fairly involved storyline, and there are lots and lots of different battles to fight.
This squad-based/turn-based strategy game is a full PC/Console game (Xbox360/PS3 gen) that was ported to the phone with minimal graphic loss. It looks absolutely amazing.
It is more expensive than most games on the phone, but you are paying for what is essentially a full featured console game.
Enemy Within, even. It's also currently on sale on the Google Play store (dunno about iTunes)
Other options (most are RPG): The Chaos Rings series (by Square-Enix, along the same vein as Final Fantasy games), Tales of Illyria games (Fallen Knight, Beyond the Iron Wall, Destinies), Simple Rockets (Kerbal Space Program on mobile), The Shadow Sun, 80 Days, Cook Serve Delicious, Door Kickers, King of Dragon Pass, Sorcery! 1&2&3.
Xcom:EU was removed from the store when they added Xcom:EW
Annoyingly I got a nVidia Shield to replace my mostly broken Nexus 7 and Xcom doens't officially support the nVidia chipsets so only way to get it working is transfer it from another device and bodge it.
I'm still super happy with mine after ~1.75years. I did have to warranty the original for the dead zone issue, but this second one has been going strong. However, I did download XCOM, and my battery just hasn't recovered. That game sucks down battery, and I definitely ate into its permanent battery life. I did that at about 1 year into the phone, before that I could usually go 2 days of internet/reddit/weather/directions use without charging. The SD-800 is still a snappy chip. XCOM is an extremely demanding game for a pocket device, and my VS980 handles it well.
I will admit I'm not a huge camera user. It takes decent enough photos, but I'm not picky.
Well, the remake is available. It plays pretty much like the PC version, which also supported touch controls, although if you have a tiny screen you may find it a bit tricky to play. There are, of course, no mods available.
As for the original X-Com, there was never a mobile port of it but you could run it in DOSBOX without too much trouble.
Yep. Both XCOM Enemy Within and XCOM 2 Collection have been ported to android, although a bit pricy for the latter. It does include all DLC's however and really is the full desktop game. On android it is available on just regular phones, although I imagine a phablet or tablet gives a better experience.
Its ok, for android depends on the specs of your phone here is the link for PlsyStore if you are interested..
The Vita version, I think is called Xcom Enemy Unknown Plus that has the Enemy Within changes albeit the name and has some difference to the original game in the missions and landscape. I can't recall everything because I've not played the Vita version in ages.
Now, it is obviously both versions have graphic downgrades. Also both can be played with touch screen. But I remember something bothered me about the camera control, don't remember if it was on the Android or Vita version.
Literally xcom EW is available for android for $5. I played the apple port a while back, and it worked pretty well. Never had issues on my iPad back in 2014 or so. The game is old enough that it should run fine on a reasonably modern Android phone.
Beyond that, I've heard very good things about Mario vs Rabbids from everyone who's tried it (including the team behind XCOM 2). I dunno if it's ok ds since I don't know my nintendo, but it was for sure on the switch
paid, square enix ports are the easiest to recommend. xcom is on sale
for free, emulation is the way to go brother. so many to choose from.
Maybe you mean something like Xcom? I haven't tried it but it should be similar to what you're looking for. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tt2kgames.xcomew
Its turn based. As far as i know its about controlling soldiers and upgrading them. You should watch some reviews to find out if you would like it.
If you don't mind spending money upfront then XCOM: Enemy Within is an amazing turn-based shooter. It's also a direct port of the PC version.
You can see my full thoughts of the base game for PC here
XCOM:EW or XCOM 2 are the big budget games with the "same"(actually much more in depth) concept (and the long war / long war 2 mods especially - there's probably been more manyears spent on just balancing those mods than on making Depths of Extinction, though hilariously enough some QoL features are much better in DoE). XCOM:EW can be had for really cheap these days when it's on sale (it's on android too: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tt2kgames.xcomew).

There is a modded version of XCOM: Enemy Unknown • Version 1.0.0 build 11 • No license and cache verification • Access to Facebook and my2k restored • Android support: 4.4.2 - 9.0
would xcom - Enemy within fit the genre you're looking for? I bloody love that game and aside from a few graphical glitches, it actually plays better on tablet than on PC IMO. It's only such a shame that they didn't bring any of the others to Android
I have a Huawei Mate SE, granted I don't have many points of reference for comparison but it's treating me well so far. Currently updated to Android/EMUI 8.0.0. At first I was a bit annoyed that it has the custom EMUI UI rather than pure Android but it hasn't actually been a problem. I paid ~$230 USD a week or so ago, IMO $184 (assuming USD) is a really good deal. Not certain if it works with T-Mobile but probably does. I'm currently using TracFone through AT&T with the TracFone "Keep Your Own Smartphone" SIM kit which also includes a T-Mobile AFAIK GSM SIM.
One thing, this phone does not exactly have a high-performance GPU so if premium games are your thing might wanna look elsewhere. I have one performance-demanding game, XCOM: Enemy Within and although it's playable it does indeed stutter quite a bit which I personally find to be a bit annoying since I also have this game on PC and am used to super-smooth gameplay. But being able to kill sectoids while out and about around town makes the stuttering worth it.
The last years I didn't have much time gaming with 2 daughters of 12 and 24 months. So when the girls are on bed I pick up my phone and feel like my gaming old me again. But only with freemium games (where you eventually hit a pay cap and I uninstall it).
The last game I played to pieces on my pc was XCOM: Enemy Within. I just learned this game is available on a mobile. But my wife won't allow me to spend money on games. We could use it for better causes she says. So this giftcard would give the gamer in me a little satisfaction and nostalgia back.

The Terese brother's Templar Battleforce is a great Scifi TRPG. Developed with passion and no IAPs.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tt2kgames.xcomew
The best game on Android, in my opinion. Just a full port of the PC versions of Enemy Unknown and Enemy Within, and there's not a microtransaction in sight. It's not silky smooth, but it really isn't on any device. It is very playable, though.

Every android device "works great for emulators". If that's your bar, the bar is low.
Most mobile games are shite. I'd say XCom is the only good one I've ever played*:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tt2kgames.xcomew
I won't play any game with pay-to-win mechanics or most types of micro payments because life is too short for grind games.
I had a friend telling me proudly he was in the top 10 for one of those games recently. He'd already previously mentioned that he'd spent hundreds on the 'free' game. What. A. Fool.
^(*exceptions include small tidy puzzle games like hoplight for wasting a few minutes at a bus stop.)
I've played XCom on the PC, and found it pretty fun with lots of replayability, it's got a mobile version which I've heard has solid controls, so you might want to look into it.

aww come on... no xcom mention? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tt2kgames.xcomew

I already have it purchased so I can't see the price. It's the full game though
Great thread, all. Here's mine, but I'm cheating because some of these I've been playing on my iPad for the bigger screen.
May want to add, XCOM: EW is available itself on the play store. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tt2kgames.xcomew

I'll second the recommendations for XCOM: Enemy Within and Ticket to Earth.
But you might also want to keep an eye out for Cyber Knights: Flashpoint, an upcoming cyberpunk tactical RPG. (Here's its Kickstarter page.) I really like the Shadowrun world, and I'm super bummed that Shadowrun Returns and Dragonfall were removed from the Google Play Store, but Cyber Knights: Flashpoint looks like it could be the next best thing. It's supposed to come out sometime this year, but that'll just be for desktop systems. Based on past history from the Trese Brothers, I expect the mobile version should be out sometime in the first half of next year.

> in PC Gaming, because already low market share
Current market share does not indicate future market share, in 2001 there were rumors that PC gaming was dying, heck it took quite a while (circa 2014) before PC gaming started to beat console in terms of revenue which was short lived as in 2016 Mobile took over as the biggest stream of game revenue (and Android and iOS existed since 2008 and 2007 respectively).
Yet for some reason I haven't seen anyone advocate we dedicate resources to porting everything to Android (which games like Xcom have done, props to 2K for doing something I dont think anyone ever asked).
>there's no really point spending money on Linux port in developers perspective.
So why did Valve? Why did the Unreal engine and the Unity engine add Linux support? These exist of low tier devs, people who make the Gaming Engines and platforms other devs distribute and build upon, I think if they have a reason to look into expanding to Linux it is going to be a lot more grounded than a developer using their engines to make games.
>If there was more gamers on Linux, there would be more games also, but since there's no games why would you switch from Windows to Linux if you mainly only play games on PC.
Notice how that is a circular argument (no gamers, no games). If there is any reason to switch from Windows to Linux it is the update process, I can apply system wide updates with a single button in Software Centers/Update managers and that includes installed software and I never get that BS "Please wait before shutting down PC, X% installed" which coincidentally once got stuck in an update loop, or even worse remember when Windows would just force the computer to restart during usage, who thought that would be a good idea?
Another reason? What about faster load times?
Total War Warhammer, was once benched 1 minute 10 seconds faster on Linux.
Similarly Mad Max was 3 times faster.
Sure these games aren't super optimized like say CS GO and you get a few FPS more on Windows (whereas CS GO performs better on Linux, I had a link to the CS GO subreddit but the mod stopped my last post because of it) but if you hit FPS above your refresh rate cutting load times by minutes sound like a good deal.
EXT4 is usually faster than NTFS, and in the future Linux will gain even more of an advantage as they are already working on a new Filesystems optimized for non volatile storage like SSDs while Windows 10 removed support for their latest (and I have yet to hear of any new file system of Microsoft).
XCOM!
XCom is on Android
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tt2kgames.xcomew
This is the XCOM I meant to link.
They've had the humble mobile app for quite some time now. This is nothing new. If I recall right, it was about 2 years ago they launched the app and were selling games across platform.
I'll provide an example for you of why this doesn't work for other games so well. Consider XCom
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tt2kgames.xcomew&hl=en
http://store.steampowered.com/agecheck/app/225340/
They're the exact same game on two different OS's, but due to people's tendencies to spend less on mobile stores Firaxis has elected to sell it for Cheaper on Android.
Here's another example of conflicting business models.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/376870/
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.telltalegames.minecraft100&hl=en
That's basically all that's stopping it for these kind of games. Where they're the same across platforms rather than significantly modified for mobile. Policies. If oculus isn't offering it, it's intentionally done to screw the customer out of another sale. There's no other reason than policy
When it comes to Ufo Defense and Terror from the Deep you can use the Android Version of OpenXcom.
Enemy Within (and before that Enemy Unknown) were officially released on the Play Store (they are also available on iOS). Here are the links:
http://www.openxcom.com/mod/openxcom-android-nightly

https://itunes.apple.com/de/app/xcom-enemy-within/id881270303?mt=8
I haven't found a decent comparison to the PC Version, but despite graphics being turned down (quite a bit, but I guess its fine considering you can play a very recent AAA game on your smartphone) it seems like they cut out a few maps and maybe cutscenes to keep size down? I am not quite sure. But if anybody can write a decent comparison or finds one I would be very interested.
