Just an FYI. While Telegram is better than WhatsApp (it isn’t under the FB umbrella) it isn’t perfect either, its far from private and isn’t encrypted end to end (meaning Telegram can see what you say). Also, under GDPR regulations Whatsapp’s changes wont affect us here in Europe the same way they will for others in the US.
For a privacy oriented chat platform you should check Signal (here’s more info and also over at r/privacy )
Chido one in Gracia - I was here with some friends and the food was great , but its not great for vegetarians, I brought a girl here for a date and the lack of veggie grub didn't get me off to a good start with her, but apart from that it was excellent
Here: https://n26.com/en-es/blog/pay-self-employment-taxes-in-spain-with-n26-business
"N26 is not a collaborative entity of the Spanish social security system or the Spanish tax office. Therefore, it’s not currently possible to pay taxes from your N26 account, including social security contributions for self-employed workers, VAT, personal income taxes, or payments under the NRC system. You also can’t receive government benefits such as pensions, unemployment allowance, guaranteed minimum income payments, etc into your N26 account. However, you can receive certain kinds of tax refunds, such as those for overpaid personal income tax."
Love your work man!
Always excited when you post something new. Your pieces are solid
Unrelated remark: it looks like you used something like this for the hover on the image gallery. I think I found it recently on reddit, small world
I agree with both points, and I think it's OK to leave some of those that eke out extra information, provided we don't wind up with search results that are useless.
I think the issue isn't so much the stupid questions but the arrogance and entitlement that goes along with some.
Trip Advisor has a really good Barcelona forum, even though it's mostly the same dumb questions. Check out the sidebar on the right...what if we did something like that in addition to the wiki? Or maybe a FAQ? http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g187497-i44-Barcelona_Catalonia.html
If you're not looking to go to the beach, it's a great time to come. Almost everything will be open, and there will be fewer tourists.
Temperatures in December are usually somewhere around 16ºC/60ºF, but you can get sunny warm days (20ºC/68ºF). It only rained three times last December.
Weather is getting weirder though, so of course there are no guarantees.
You should try a car sharing website like Blablacar. http://www.blablacar.com/
You put in where you are and where you want to go and what day and it shows you users of the site who are driving that day with space in their car. The users decide what the want to charge and have reviews from other passengers.
For Andorroa today for example today there are spaces in cars from as cheap as 6 euro up to 18 euro.
I've used it as a driver and a passenger for a few trips to the south of France since it's really expensive to get there by bus / train.
>including catalan apps/apps with catalan origin as well
There isn't any major app in catalan that aren't also common outside. Maybe the newspapers, TVs, radio, Bicing, Xala (human towers streaming service) and Muvicat.
I do, however, recommend checking out Surtdecasa (surtdecasa.cat's website), which is pretty good if you want to find out stuff to do arround the territory.
There are a LOT to do and see here in Barcelona.
I'm sorry, I have to go right now but I link a couple of free guides ;-)
Have you tried Shalimar in Raval?
It's a small place, with shitty decor. But it's cheap and the food tastes authentic.
One of the most used website to search for a flat in Barcelona is idealista.es But if you're only looking for 6 months, it could be harder. Some agencies have this kind of short rental contratcs, but you could be asked to pay a high deposit to get the flat, and it's not worth it. You could have a look to AirBnb, they have a section for sublet and monthly rentals: https://www.airbnb.com/sublets Guess it could be more expensive than a normal flat but at least you don't pay deposit :) Good luck!
I'd suggest you go and see it in a bar. It'll be a different atmosphere, but still a lot of fun and won't cost €99.
Personally, I prefer to watch footy in a bar: you get a better view, replays, it's cheaper... But then, I'm not a huge fan either.
Chill Bar near the Sagrada Família is a good bet; there's usually a 50-50 mix of catalans and guiris from various countries for Barça games.
Looks like it's been scraped from the Airbnb site:
> The data utilizes public information compiled from the Airbnb web-site
Fairly straightforward to do as they serve it up in an easily parseable form.
It's for renting lodging, i.e. temporary/holiday accommodation, so not renting in the traditional sense. It started with offering just rooms in peoples places and then moved to entire houses etc. So sharing is not necessarily wrong to describe AirBnb.
It is also certainly not illegal anywhere besides Berlin, I haven't heard of another city banning AirBnb. The fines by the city of Barcelona and other cities, were for breaking local laws not for renting per se.
Edit: Actually, AirBnb is offered in Berlin right now (https://www.airbnb.com/s/Berlin--Germany), the law was for "unregistered vacation rentals".
I was just in Barcelona and while I did some biking it was very casual so I can't offer a first hand recommendation. What I can suggest is you sign up or browse https://www.strava.com either on your phone through their app or on a PC through a browser, and use the segment explorer to see the most popular bike routes. I usually do this in any city I visit to find great routes.
They also have a global heat map available http://labs.strava.com/heatmap/#6/-120.90000/38.36000/blue/bike that may be useful.

Not free, but I can highly recommend Mullvad. 5 Euros/month, zero-knowledge (or so they claim, I trust them enough that they wouldn't fuck up a decent business model), OpenVPN-based, native clients on OSX/Windows and good config support for *nix, iOS and Android, lots of international exit points, accept bitcoin, good speeds and support.
is one of the better comparison lists I've seen.
> Any alternative apps?
You could try 'Here' if you're on Android. Lets you download maps for entire regions/countries. Doesn't require an internet connection.
My absolute favorite tapas restaurant was La Flauta
and my favorite place in barcelona to watch the sunset The Bunker
Thanks for the reminder! I'll be at work so i won't see much, but i'll remind the girls.
As an aside, from that page, there's gonna be a total lunar one in september, i hope i don't forget.
You can try AirBnB experiences. There's quite a number of Barna tour guides on there because AirBnb bought a local company called Trip4Real that eventually merged with Airbnb Experiences.
I actually just ran (a segment of) this for the first time this past Sunday and it was incredible.
There was a slight drizzle (light rain, es:llovizna?) that kept me cool and I could see Camp Nou easily, where the FCB vs Madrid game was playing. When Barcelona scored their first goal, I could hear the crowd from kilometers away, it was crazy.
quick edit: that strava run i linked has elevation data, for those interested. I'm sure a quick search on Strava for "carretera de les aigues" will bring up runs of the whole trail.
This place is next door to my house, they seem very popular and I always see them cooking the whole cochinillos, looks amazing.
I would be down on any of the suggested dates and come with my girlfriend (+1) - I don't really mind the price and the place looks good to me. For alternatives, Can Travi Nou has a Calçotada menu for around 40, or there is a few suggestions on TimeOut - though I think most things will be around 30-40, so I'd just go with the one you know.
Also, I'm not against turning this into a BBQ, but just enjoying the company and meal by going to a restaurant sounds more enjoyable (and less so cold)
I just saw that El Disbaret in Gracia has calçots on uber eats. I had a good calçotada there a few years ago, so might give it a try.
To get to Tibidabo, your best bet is the S1 or S2 up to Peu de Funicular, it looks like
Here are 80 first-hand experiences: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g187497-d2578464-Reviews-La_Forquilla-Barcelona_Catalonia.html
It's an unassuming place, great service (for Spain), and creative modern takes on Mediterranean cuisine.
I's Montjuic, but on a side view. This view cannot be seen from "land" because is standing on a clift, there's a road below, but to close to take this perspective.
I think the only way to take this foto is from somewhere on the "Moll Oriental" the pier just in front of the castle. Knowing your dad sailed on a merchant makes it more possible. Looks like this photo wer taken just off-boarding.
For spanish, try using Duolingo, great free website for learning languages similar to rosetta stone. I use it on my laptop but there should be a mobile app as well, and it's great for getting the basics down (I'm about 3/4 of the way through the spanish section)
Just in case: I had this fantastic book and it was the best learning resource I ever used. I also ended up using the Spanish version a year later. I just had a pdf version of it though. But either way check Wallapop like the other comment said. . A bunch of people are selling it for 8-10
In the middle of the crisis and you want a hotline for a beer?
Ok, the only phone number is 061.
You can also install these two apps:
And follow the online instructions.
Definitely do some proper in-person lessons to start!
Continuing with lessons later on is useful too of course, but starting with them is 100% a necessity for quickly getting the basics imo. You can live without it, but you'll waste a lot of time and have to work through a lot of unnecessary confusion, and apps are not a great alternative (though they're not bad for revision & vocabulary).
Once you've got the basics, use them as much as you can: watch Spanish Netflix (first with English subs, then Spanish subs, eventually just audio), talk to real people (even when it's hard work), read the basic Spanish books (https://www.amazon.com/Spanish-Short-Stories-Beginners-Unconventional/dp/1514646080 is not bad) and later read the Spanish news or real books, etc etc etc.
Get a VPN and don't worry at all. I use NordVPN and got a 2-year deal back when I signed up. I checked quickly and they got a 3-year deal and good speeds for torrenting/streaming/etc. Also works great for country restricted content, obviously.
Edit Just copied link from google; I am not making anything by promoting them.
It's here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.geomobile.tmbmobile
You can't buy tickets, just see schedules and any service interruptions
There is an app for android, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.atoomstudio.fmgracia
And also in this link http://www.festamajordegracia.cat/programacio
They're both in Catalan or Spanish, so if you have any doubt I can help you out! Sorry for formatting but I'm on phone now.
Yes, I bought one of these for my own place a couple of years ago, super happy with it, and fitted one at a friend's (rented) place last weekend.
At my place it was super easy, shut off water, unscrew existing connector, fit supplied new t-connector with about 20 turns of (supplied) PTFE tape, no problems.
At my friend's place last weekend, the existing connector was screwed in SO FUCKING TIGHT I thought we'd never get it out without breaking something. Eventually we managed to get it out, but it was pretty nerve-wracking.
Whether you're "allowed" to or not, who is going to know if you take it out when you leave?
Found this on Amazon please update the project if you get it started I would like to hear more. I'd be concerned about the high temps of summer possibly killing the pile.
Locals (and anyone who has been here for a long time) tend to wear winter coats (puffy/insulated). So for us, it feels cold but for you maybe not... also there's a big difference between early morning/night time and midday.
Weather.com has a "feels like" field. Right now, it says 14ºC. Do with that what you will.
File a denuncia ? I've never done that; is it hard to do ?
Sorry, just saw the no-chinese mention now.
~~Chen Ji - don't expect a nice restaurant or great service, but prepare for good, authentic & really cheap chinese food - lots of it. Honestly one of my favorite restaurants in BCN, and most of the others are a lot more expensive.~~
I prefer Orio, ask how it works to the guy in the door if you happen to go there. It's not anything weird or difficult, it's just that you may not understand it at first since it's not the typical sit down and order restaurant.
are you the same Lenovo that sold customers computers with pre-installed malware/adware which not only hijacked their browser but also exposed those computers to serious hacks?
or am i thinking of another lenovo?
in any case, enjoy painting your wall
Most European countries use between 220-240V. You need to check your charger/plug to ensure it says whether it is compatible for different voltages. For example, this random Amazon plug:
Dual-USB output cell phone charger with a total current of 5V/2.4A and input with *100-240V enables you to charge two mobile devices simultaneously at high speed. It can really save you time.*
Same problem here, I was scared as well and I bought this that I’m linking to do it myself. The pointy end protects you from going too far in and all the wax comes out easily, you can combo it with some ear drops they sell in the pharmacy to soften it up if it’s too hard

There is this app I made a while ago "Bike Lanes Barcelona"
https://apps.apple.com/sr/app/bike-lanes-barcelona/id1448110751
Don't bring any valuables with you if you plan to go into the water together.
Buy something like this that allows swimming with your valuables: https://www.amazon.es/Syncwire-Ri%C3%B1onera-Impermeable-Ajustable-Senderismo/dp/B082V4LLK1/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?crid=2JLUFJBYKEYQG&keywords=funda+de+nadar&qid=1655365553&sprefix=funda+de+nadar%2Caps%2C99&sr=8-4
If you feel the person sitting next to you is trustworthy, ask them (at your own risk).
This might not be exactly what you're looking for size wise but I'm posting it regardless, might be a suitable alternative.
Just an idea: I know it's smaller, but you have these portable screens these days, that are great for traveling. Like this: https://www.amazon.com/Portable-Monitor-15-6inch-Computer-Protector/dp/B088D8JG3L/.
But like you said, maybe it's too small for you.
I saw people using little spikes to keep them from rest in the balcony and other areas like these one https://www.amazon.es/LAZZARU-Pinchos-Antipalomas-Acero-Inoxidable/dp/B08945ZQ5P/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=pinchos+antipalomas&qid=1653411334&sr=8-5 I guess there has to be some repellents too for pidgeons
We recently the Brita tap filter and happy with it. Before we tried the Geyser Euro - same concept and slightly better taste, but it multiplied the water pressure and made everything wet if not handled carefully.
I have a Brita under-sink filter.
No limescale in my kettle at all, no chlorine taste, no scum on tea. Cheaper, easier to install and less wasteful than Reverse Osmosis, but not the same thing.
One cartridge lasts me at least six months for all drinking and cooking (one person household during the week, two person at weekends).
A small number of reviewers online say it's useless, but I'm 100% happy with it.
I used this app in here and other countries, it's pretty neat: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=sfcapital.publictoiletinsouthaustralia&hl=en&gl=US
The database for Barcelona is a bit off, but we can do a colective effort to catalog all the places that are free.
I think it depends where in the city. It was fine when I lived near Sagrada Familia and Guinardo, but awful (strong chlorine taste) in Sants and Raval.
It's not so bad if you put it in a jug in the fridge for a few hours, the chlorine taste disappears after a while.
One of the best buys I ever made was one of these under-sink filters. No bad taste, no calcium in the kettle, no scum on tea, no carrying bottled water up the stairs.
Why do people take their passports with them and/or leave their cards inside a bag on the floor? Just have a small credit card holder like this which will fit even in the smallest pocket for women's jeans.
Not sure if you are looking for more dress style trousers but I bought these from amazon (Amazon Essentials Straight-fit Cargo Pant - Casual-Pants Hombre https://www.amazon.es/dp/B07F2P5266/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_G5NQPV5NKDYAANKAD7PG?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1), like you I am a 30 leg and they fit perfectly. Also if you can get away with jeans, Celio have 30 leg in some styles.

The one that you can find in the shelves of the shops right now it's this: https://www.amazon.es/Starbucks-Taza-Barcelona-Yah-Camarones/dp/B01M8P8E9L

Except that their app is over complicated, especially in comparison with the N26 one. You can use N26 everywhere in Spain, except for governmental stuff. Like for example paying your taxes or getting money when you are unemployed (ERTE). They said they are working on it, but it might take a while: https://n26.com/en-es/blog/letter-from-our-general-manager-customers-are-top-priority
I would recommend getting an ING account (just to be fully compliant) and N26 as well. After a while you can check which one you like the best for everyday banking. But keep both as they are free anyway.
Oh lol, I thought sharing my profile would show my past activities.
Passeig de les aigues (I call it "the waterway"): https://www.strava.com/activities/614665299
Around Les Corts: https://www.strava.com/activities/611342962
These are my two most common routes. I guess I'm lucky to be close enough to the mountains that I can hike up to "the waterway" every Sunday.
Also, wth is up with your username? Esti roman?
Hey! Please check out the wiki as there's lots of useful info in there about what to see, where to eat, etc. I also recommend the wikitravel page for Barcelona,. which has a lot of good info for visiting the city: http://wikitravel.org/en/Barcelona
When you've got a plan for your stay, feel free to come back and ask any specific questions you have (for topics not covered in the wiki or previous posts).
But most of all, enjoy your visit.
> What linguists consider English to be a Romance language??????
As I said I don't agree with the notion, but there's discussion about it, by academics. This discussion is of course mainly not on the internet, although sometimes it leaks : https://www.researchgate.net/post/Is_English_language_a_Germanic_or_a_Romance_language
As said, most academics don't agree with it, but that doesn't mean there's no discussion.
> Here my question and your answer:
You failed at English there. I never stated any relationship between French and Spanish. I stated a relationship between catalan and french, and another one catalan and spanish, those two relationships I compared by saying Catalan is closer to Spanish than it is to French.
Look every time I cross with you, whether it be here, on /r/europe or other subs, you always twist words. It's annoying. It's infantile.
If you open a N26 account with a Spanish address it will give you a Spanish IBAN, which a lot services requiere in here.
I’d recommend it. Here is my referral in case you feel like it: https://n26.com/r/rodrigoa0545
I will soon be facing the same issue as you are now and I think I will go for the online-only bank, N26:
https://n26.com/en-es
It's already present in many countries and it looks like they are experiencing rapid growth.
Not knowing anything about Flamenco, I have no idea how good or bad this place is, but I did enjoy it:
Espai Barroc in El Born (also called Palau Delmases).
You get the bonus of going into a weird old alleyway of a building that's very photo-worthy.
But again, I have no idea how tourist trappy or good this place actually is.
I know there is a nice tea place that is usually open till 12.. Might be a bit loud at times but worth checking out. It's a bit hard to find if you've never been there.
Yours was a very helpful random tip actually, loved it u/additional_pylons_88!
I checked it out and the book that they have on display in the book case near to the entrance is "Atles Il'lustrat Dels Bolets", by Jean-Louis Lamaison.
This one seems to be a general Atlas, though. Is there any chance you remember if this is the book you saw? I took a pic, in case it helps recognizing it: https://anonfiles.com/R1h2c2Neoe/bolets_jpg
Merci!
There are the V15 and V19 buses at the door, sure you could find a route to arrive fast. Also, I recommend you the app AMB Mobilitat: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.amb.ambtemps&hl=es&gl=US
Thank you for this comment, i am aware of this, this is why I never left it on during the night, this is what keeps me warm rest of the night xD

right, if the law do not change drastically at EU and national level, the result will be exactly the same as before, hey there's even a famous quote about it
Generally in this day and age third world implies developing nations in Africa for example. Its the second example here, but I think its the more common way of using it these days.
The website seems to be down atm. Did the article have anything to do with Barcelona besides talking about Airbnb? I haven't had the chance to read it yet.

I haven't used it in a few years but phpmyadmin is good enough for hacking around on the database and doing some queries and maintenance. You can even create a new user with read-only access for phpmyadmin and setup some reporting queries directly in it.
Hi guys, I'm new to the city! I'm a 21 years old male and the youngest at the office so it's hard to relate to people at work. I tried meetup.com but I didn't find any meetups organized by people of my age range and with similar interests. I'm not the party / disco / club type either, which of course doesn't help haha. If anyone is in a similar situation or just wants to do something hit me up! I'm interested in D&D, airsoft, hiking or whatever as long as it's fun and healthy! I speak English, Spanish and Catalan :)
Cheers!
Yes you have, have a look on meetup.com ! At least for hiking, I have not tried personally but a friend of mine has when he was living here apparently you have all the levels, half a day to several days
Looking at the data here, even if you count all retail, commerce and repairs as 100% tourist related and add it to the hospitality category that would only come out too 24.8%. https://www.slideshare.net/barcelonactiva/barcelona-data-sheet-2017
Obviously not all retail/commerce is for tourism in the metro area. I mean looking at the data for GDP here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_metropolitan_areas_in_the_European_Union_by_GDP
Barcelona ranks in the top 10 and top 4 dependent on different categories. Incredibly rich area and a thriving economy that is not as reliant on tourism as is projected.
yeah, but what is Cl@ve 24h ?
this is where the confusing part starts... they link to this: https://clave.gob.es/clave_Home/clave.html the general Clave homepage ..
once you apply for the Cl@ve Permanten, you need to download an app called Cl@ve PIN
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=es.aeat.pin24h&hl=en&gl=US
So more than likely they are refering to this..
How did you obtain your "Cl@ve PIN"? By regular mail when filing your taxes?
Might be a bit difficult to hunt down digitally nowadays but this 2k remastered UK Bluray import is the best-looking version of the movie by far: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wheels-Meals-Eureka-Classics-Blu-ray/dp/B07MC5RDHP/ref=mp_s_a_1_1
I had a similar problem in my bathroom, it was an open drain in the shower that was the culprit. So, I got this to put over the drain when I am not showering, it worked!
Although, you problem sounds a lot bigger.
You'll find fresh mulberries/blackberries (mora in Spanish) in the produce section of most supermarkets by the raspberries and blueberries.

No, no, no.
To get satellite working anywhere in Spain these days, you need a huge dish. And even then, it's very unreliable. And BCN/Cat is a particularly bad zone. People are saying that a 3m dish could work but I've not heard of anyone having any luck yet.
In my opinion, the IP TV box is a rip off. You can get any small multimedia PC, install Chrome, contract UnoTelly and pay about €60 per year total for reliable, HD TV (depends on your ISP too). Covers all web channels in any country. And will do a lot more than the IP TV box (like downloading your movies, TV shows etc if you want to torrent stuff, playing games, etc). So although the initial outlay maybe a bit more, the ongoing costs are much lower and the potential is much higher.
I've been messing around with this stuff for years. Despite being 'integrated' and speaking pretty good Catalan and Spanish, having access to the BBC and now Netflix is really important to me. I've had Sky, Freesat, and I've used tons of services and plugins.
Apologies for the ranty tone.
I'll be visiting Barcelona for the first time in two days, I've downloaded two applications: this one and this other one as well as the one for transports.
The first application would be perfect, but it stucks when I click on maps, is it normal? The second one is also cool, the map works but the search engine is not really good.
Can someone reccomend me anything better? I'd like something that allows me to: - add places I want to visit in favorites - show them on map (possibly also offline) - show the fastest way to arrive there from my current location
Thanks!
I'm not a teacher by training (I studied Political Science & Economics in Germany), but here's how I can imagine this to go down:
We can either pick up a German language workbook, such as this one and go through it together.
Or we can conduct a series of roleplays/ interviews based around real life situations like finding an apartment, doing a job interview, getting registered with the local authorities, etc. We would discuss what situations you're interested in and I'd prepare the material beforehand.
A mix of the two is also totally possible, but it also depends on your level of German. If you're a complete beginner, then we need to start with the workbooks. If not, then we can do the other thing.
By the way, are you familiar with the Common European Language Proficiency Framework? (A1, A2, B1, B2...). This is how it looks like. Where would you place yourself on it?
There are these books from which yo should choose the french version as each book in each language is directed to speakers of those languages.
I have the catalan on, but never used it.
