I could've got karma for these scissors? Damn. I didn't think they were that special, they're like less than $10 at hobby lobby.

EDIT this comment started a huge conversation! I’m so proud! Thank everyone for the positive feedback and bonus points to those who said they were switching! Let’s help the planet!
It takes special balls, and laziness to shamelessly copy a multi-award winning campaign of the top brand in your category. For God'sake, there's even an Absolut book with hundreds of such ads.
Corkatoo is the name I have seen them sold under.
That’s so unnecessary. If you insist of not using a colander (which I wouldn’t call a pot) just get something like these Judge ones. Maybe I’m wrong, but it doesn’t look like you can put the lid on actually closed with those holes.
This is really great! Do you sell these? I'd be interested in one!
We bought this plate for my dad who has hand tremors and trouble manipulating his fork and food. It's very plasticy and institutional looking, but there weren't too many options available. Your version would do really well if marketed it to those with similar need. Try searching "scoop plate" or "Parkinson's plate" if you haven't already.
There's a certain novelty that it plays on. My wife has one of these and it's just kinda nice to have something physical instantly since my lazy ass aint going to get shit printed out.
> infirmity could make it difficult to lift their hands dropping is much easier.
More often than not, the problem I see with door locks and the elderly, is not getting the key in the lock but turning it.
They sell key holders that increase leverage specifically for this problem.

A basic Circle Template stencil is going to out-perform this iris thing every day of the week. Faster, no moving parts, and less dimensional ambiguity. Costs about $5 too.
https://www.amazon.com/Staedtler-Combo-Circle-Template-977/dp/B000KIBQ46
My biggest issue with this though, is the fact that the iris itself hovers over the paper instead of being flat against it. That almost seems to guarantee a line that wobbles.
A compass still has its place but we were trained to avoid the compass until the circle template wouldn't work. Both work about as well, but a compass takes time to adjust, a template simply has a circle of every diameter.
This iris would not be acceptable in most drafting environments. But it is good looking, and a cool gadget.

You can probably find them cheaper at AliExpress or similar site, but I didn't find them in the first few pages searching pixel playing cards.
i love my memory foam mattress, very comfortable and resilient. it was also much cheaper than the average mattress. the 2 main downsides i have come across though are that they can be a little hot. so not great in summer and if you lay in one spot to long it can be hard to move. so if your say watching a movie in bed or reading a book it can be hard to adjust your position into something that is more comfortable for sleeping. i won't lay in my bed anymore unless i know for sure i am going to sleep. other than that though the mattress is fantastic, it's very easy to fall asleep you don't get lumps in the bed, and if you have a partner movement doesn't transfer much so you don't wake them up. oh thats one last complaint, sex is a bit harder since you sink into the bed more. i would definitely recommend getting one though if your looking for a mattress. i purchased a Zinus Memory Foam 12 Inch Green Tea Mattress, Queen for 200 bucks at the start of 2016. when it was on sale. it's 279 now.

Bose isn't cheap. Bookshelf speakers are. I got a pair of $50 bookshelf speakers and a $25 amp and it sounded far more neutral than Bose's typical sound signature.
That's not to say that Bose doesn't have its place. My dad has issues with high-pitched noises, so he prefers Bose and their now-defunct Soundlink III speakers. And I'm pretty impressed by their tiny Micro and sunglasses. But saying that Bose is the best option for the average joe who's "not going to design your room around your speakers" is just silly.
Yeah, one hit vs. how many flops? Think about the untold manhours, R&D expenses, management time that went to waste on deadend formats? But don't take my word for it, just look at what the market has said. It's voted with its feet: SNE share price (Sony's) since 2000 -- went from $120 per share at its peak to less than $10 dollars at its trough (which was not so long ago). Sony's market cap is currently around $16bn. Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics market cap recently touched $200bn. There was a time when Samsung Electronics wasn't even close to Sony in market cap. This is a stark case study of two companies that passed each other going in opposite directions.
Secondly, what is the shelf life of BluRay anyway? BluRay sales will NEVER even come close to catching the total number of DVD sales when all is said and done. Why is this relevant? A "victory" only really matters if there is some meaningful payoff at the end of the day. Further, on the horizon there will almost certainly be a cheaper more viable format to come (with much larger capacity) -- and if I had to guess without requiring any moving parts (think market evolution from floppies to USB sticks and from spinning HDDs to SSDs). But we all know that the future is streaming / downloading digital content anyway. It's already here.
I can't remember the last time I bought a physical disc (CD, DVD or otherwise). Truth be told, I am a voracious consumer of content (both video and audio) but I have never bought a BluRay disc. All of my content is either via streaming / download. Same goes for all my gaming needs (via Steam -- the last time I bought a physical CD was for Civilization IV in 2005, 8 years ago).
For Sony, BluRay was a Pyrrhic victory at best, and frankly, likely its last.
Do you think Apple's innovations involved anything hardware related? No way. Their innovations were the graphical user interface (Which Steve Jobs stole from Xerox), which only involved art in the design of the various logos on the dock and the general look of the interface, and the "modern" look of the Apple product, which is simply a spin off of the design in Star Trek: The Next Generation with a few small tweaks. It's nothing new. Look at Minority Report or 2001: A Space Odyssey and you'll see that Apple wasn't as innovative as you may think.
Engineers basically exist to change things, IF it works. Trust me, if this design worked for electrical plugs, it would have already been invented (and in a way, it already has been invented). Buy it here...
It all started when they found a way to preserve herring for weeks. This allowed them to go fishing for a much longer time, bring in large loads, and ship their goods a lot further (due to the fish staying fresh, longer).

I bought 3 packs several months ago - one for me, one for my mom and one for my sister. I'm still using the same pack. The elastics don't break, they just eventually stretch out. They're a super stretchy tube of material without that stupid glued together section that always breaks and/or scratches the shit out of your hand.
I've had good luck with the newer braided elastics (they look like this) not breaking too but they do have the glued thing that scratches my hand. :\
Here's a panorama I took of the inside. I got to listen to a preeminent organist play that organ a few years ago during the festival of lights. It's wonderful.
They tried implementing LED traffic lights in Canada and parts of the US but ran into problems with snow sticking on the lamps. No heat to melt the snow off.
Always amazes me how many logos with a film reel just roll with having four circles and a tiny inner circle, which is just not at all how reels have ever worked. I assume it was just copied from this shit, which took me 5 seconds of google image searching.

If you're that worried about tap water in your location, test it. You can get water testing kits very easily for cheap.

If you're still worried, you can install water filters for your whole home, or even just for your kitchen tap.
The environmental damage done by single use water bottles is truly immense.
Meh, call me when this is a shark head with the laser coming out of its freaking head!
I give everyone the same advice: buy a test kit. I recommend this one by Taylor.
People will tell you it's not necessary. The pool supply store will test the water for free. And it is $104, which I admit isn't cheap.
Just trust me. If you want to do it right getting your own test kit is the way to go.
I mean, in the beginning you're going to be screwing up a lot. Which means a lot of trips to the pool supply store to have your water tested. And the guys there probably do know their shit, but keeping pools clean is almost as much an art as it is a science so their advice won't work 100% of the time.
Better to educate yourself, test the water yourself often and become your own pool guru. There's tons of websites that will teach you what you need to know. It's not easy but it isn't exactly rocket surgery either.
Oh, and keep the reagents for the test kit indoors in the air conditioning. Some guys keep them in the fridge (which is probably overkill).

Hi u/LeroyoJenkins,
I'd like to answer your question even if it's rhetorical:

>You make hollow books from scratch, or you take books and destroy them to use as decoration?
Kara here. I purchase books and destroy them in that you're unable to read the contents of that particular, physical book, yes indeed. H.P. Lovecraft is in the public domain, so if I wished, I could make copies of his titles legally. But I do also craft many books that are not in public domain and so I'd be in copyright violation by fabricating those titles.
My customers, booklovers, request books that mean something to them personally, a book they know passages of by heart oftentimes. The beauty of seeing just the cover of a physical book is that it can remind one of the story and even the specific time in your life that you enjoyed the book.
The excellent thing is, Lovecraft and billions of other amazing works of literature are available for free on the Project Gutenberg. https://www.gutenberg.org/
I understand the reverence for real, physical books. Books are symbolic of knowledge and creativity and freedom of speech, and destroying any part of them seems to be an affront to those ideals.
One thing I like to share is that I refrain from crafting irreplaceable or rare volumes such as my prized early 1900s Poe pocket editions you can see in the pic, (fully readable!). I urge everyone to buy real books whether for reading or for propping up a table leg, or making a hollow book. By buying real books, we keep the print industry alive!
Thank you kindly for taking the time to post your reaction to my work here.
Kara
You can also grab one just like it on Amazon for about $10.
It's in Dutch so beware. It's also not a literary piece, it's more of an informative book. There's one on parks and modern buildings too. I saw the collection in a library but that particular one seemed most fun.

It didn't take very long. That's a very short piece of code.
For the most part, it's about the same as normal typing to type the code. It's thinking about the code that takes the most time.
Sometimes it's faster than normal typing when you have some tricks you can use. In my editor, I can select a word and press CTRL + Shift + L
to edit all occurrences of that word in my file.
I made a couple of changes to the formatting after I typed it, but a lot of developers don't even need to do that. Many have formatting automated with tooling such as ESLint and Prettier.
With those tools, formatting rules are already defined and you can set it up so that it automatically formats your code when you save the file.

Blender is a free & open-source 3D modelling program with a lot of video tutorials online.
It should be capable of producing renders of this quality in the hands of a skilled user.
It does take into account rain according to http://www.forensicdynamics.com/stopping-braking-distance-calculator
However does not take into account reaction time.
If you want to take this into account and assume a reaction time of 1s on wet roads you come up with 12 m https://www.omnicalculator.com/physics/stopping-distance
Technically you could subtract the actual breaking distance from the stopping distance as the car in front needs to decelerate as well.
Also to consider is that for the pictures in question it's unlikely that a driver engages the brakes as hard as they can as they should see the "barriers" from much further away.

I have. It says nothing about Amsterdam currently facing rising sea levels. All it says in relation to rising sea levels is that when the Afsluitdijk needs to be raised, it can be widened as well. The idea was introduced in 2008, and has not been implemented.
Amsterdam is currently situated between two huge locks. These two locks keep the city safe from rising sea levels. The article the OP linked to refers to rising sea levels requiring more land being dedicated for water storage while there already is a shortage of building land.
It's not the city that has problems with rising sea levels, it's the country. And these houses are definitely not the solution.

> I don't believe that all of it is bad design it's just design that isn't aesthetically pleasing to you
Here is the issue. Things that are well designed are not about aesthetics, the have good aesthetics when they are well designed.I believe that when people think this way, they are actually referring to art.
I studied design and work as a designer. Prior to my education I thought more like this, but I really had little understanding of what design actually is.
You comment suggests that you think that design is a form of art, but it is not.
Design solves problems. It presents solutions. It takes formerly unrelated items and forges something new and better than that which was previously.
When you talk about "breaking rules and unleashing whimsy. It's ok for a design be fun and obscure" you are clealy talking about art.
Design is controlled and restrained. Design has purpose and function.
As I said before things that are designed well will often be aesthetically pleasing, but this is the result of good design, not the purpose of it.
I will say again, Design is not art

Well it depends on what format you're looking for.

>The United States was founded on religious grounds
No, No, NO. Some of the original settlers came to the Americas to be able to practice their religion freely, but the country itself WAS NOT FOUNDED on religious grounds. The ONLY mention of religion whatsoever in the main body of the Constitution itself is Article 6, section 3, which states: >"no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States."
which flies in the face of the notion that there were religious grounds for the founding; if that was the case, why would they go out of their way to ensure nonreligious people would have the same access to power?
Lets add a bit more fuel to the fire: Article 11 of the 1796 treaty with Tripoli, which was ratified by congress: >"As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen [Muslims]; and as the said States never entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mahometan [Muslim] nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries."
Add to that, most of the founding fathers were Deists, not Christians. Ever hear of the Jefferson Bible? Even Lincoln was quoted as having said "The Bible is not my book, nor Christianity my profession."
And a little bit of trivia for you on the "In God We Trust": That wasn't on the money until the 50's. It was ONLY put there by a reactionary congress due to the menace of the atheistic nature of USSR.

Your asking for a very specific thing here. The Ottoman’s governed their empire differently at different times. It’s important to note that the time period the Marbles were taken was one in which the Ottomans were loosening their grip over Greece. Their social and political institutions (janissaries, the Ulema) that maintained authority across the empire lost their influence and there were a lot more opportunities for Greeks to live independently. So trying to understand Ottoman laws actually enforced in Greece from 1801-1821 is meaningless. It’s possible the Marbles were bought from the Ottomans (who were DESPERATE for money) and Lord Elgin took them based off that, which imo is not reason enough for Britain to hang onto them. If you’re interested in reading more about Ottoman Greece, check out this book. It’s definitely bias against the Ottomans, and doesn’t offer an analysis centuries later, but instead is a good look into the conditions in Greece during the time. I see you’re arguing it in a modern context with modern laws and ignoring the moral aspect, but I think understanding the Marbles being taken during a time of independence, social, political change and a reemergence of Greek culture/language allows for a critical look into who has authority over the objects.

A set of circle templates are industry standard, and include axis marks for alignment. The most important part, the tracing edge touches the paper so you don't lose accuracy in the angle of the pencil like you do with this device. Also, you draw smooth circles, not lightly faceted ones. Ellipse templates by degree can also be sorted in with them for perspective drawing. They're the shape and size of paper so they flat pack nicely too.

I guess arguably, it isn't. But there's a whole series of similar actually minimalist Pelican book covers like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Stigma-Management-Spoiled-Identity-Pelican/dp/0140209980, and with the rules calling for a "descriptive title", I didn't want to add some crappy wordy description, so thought I'd just go with "minimalist book cover".
(also pinging u/LogicWeaknr)
I wouldn't even qualify this as "okay design". The logo doesn't intuitively give off a honey comb vibe. It almost feels like a hex nut. Of course, when you read "pure honey", you get a sense that it's meant to be a honey comb.
Yeah, maybe if the actual bottle was a honey comb shape, then maaaayybeee it might qualify for design porn. Even this bottle would qualify higher for design porn than the one you submitted: https://www.amazon.com/honeycomb-Heat-Resistant-Storage-Container-Kitchen/dp/B07ZDFBV4F
