Read Proficient Motorcycling by David L. Hough. It's the most comprehensive guide in becoming a better rider; beginners and experienced alike agree that this is a great read; I have it on paperback and in the off season, I give it a read; there's so much to learn.
Do you have quality lighting? If not I upgraded my halogen bulb to an LED headlight I found on amazon and it made a huge difference.

Harleys normally come with one, though it’s usually a screw type under the throttle that’s tricky to use on the highway, you have to end up using your left hand to tighten it. A simple but effective lock are the universal aluminum ones. Usually around $20, but amazon has one for $15
Universal Motorcycle Cruise Control Throttle Lock Assist Aluminum Wrist/Hand Grip Lock Clamp with Silicone Ring Protect Throttle Grip,Throttle Control System https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TF14C74/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ICXZEb3RV16VW
If you ever get another Harley, consider getting one with cruise control. I thought it would be gimmicky on a bike (used a throttle lock on my sporty), but when I got my 2nd bike (‘17 Dyna) it came with a CC, and i use it all the time! Ride safe 🤘🏽
Nope - most Harleys will never make it to 100k, because nobody decided to ride them, or because somewhere between 1k and 100k someone decided it needs to be a 130hp drag-street-monster (which of course isn't going to last as long), or because nobody maintained it, but there are tons of examples out there where someone took really good care of one and left it stock, and they seem to hold up about as well as any other motorcycle brand that gets taken care of (seriously, just Google 100k Harley - people usually bullshit about how fast it is but less often how long it lasted, and more than one of them provides a complete repair history that doesn't include ANY rebuild). They rank better than BMW for reliability, so sayeth ye olde Consumer Reports - (http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2015/04/who-makes-the-most-reliable-motorcycle/index.htm - 40% of BMW's fail by year 4).
I don't have a tach on mine either. I bought one of these. You wrap the wire around one of the plug wires. It'll tell you the rpms and you can use it to fine tune. Some folks are fine adjusting the idle by ear, but I'm not 100% comfortable doing that. https://www.amazon.com/Maintenance-Tachometer-Replaceable-Motorcycle-Paramotors/dp/B07PMJH7QV/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?dchild=1&keywords=hour+meter&qid=1627252141&sr=8-6
Great to see another Street Rod on here. I'd suggest getting some longer foot pegs, they will give your foot more room. I got a pair like this and it made a big difference.
I also have a different silencer, from danmoto... it came with a different heat shield and now the exhaust pipe doesn't interfere with my right foot.
Before I did all that, on the highway I'd put my right foot on the peg/heat shield pad, and left foot I'd put the ball of my foot on the peg, and my heel on the big suspension nut. It worked surprisingly well. The weird exhaust placement is my only complaint with my 2019 SR, it's been as dependable as an anvil, it corners like it's on rails, and it sounds great. It also gets me a lot of "that's a harley?" comments.
I bought the new riser cover off Amazon. It’s from vtwinmanufacturing for 97+ up. The fitment on the description says 02+ but the box said 97+. It fit perfect. Total install was like 2 hours and I didn’t need to extend any wires when I internally wired them.
https://www.amazon.com/Motorcycle-Street-Slammer-Handlebar-Riser/dp/B0085MJ5SI
I popped open a door opener that clips to the visor and soldered a momentary switch to the leads for the garage door. Drilled a hole in my instrument cluster and mounted it. Runs on a battery so I have to change it every year or two but works! $8 from Amazon
I got the day lighter "knockoff" off amazon or eBay for like $60.00 with shipping. Pretty Easy to install looks good and doesn't cost $500.00.

2013 forty eight
Nelson-Rigg Route 1 Weekender - It's a little pricey, but it fits the rack I have perfectly and holds quite a bit of stuff. It has a strap in the front that wraps around the base of the sissy bar and then four loops on the bottom that attach to the rack, so you needn't worry that it might fall off or come loose.
You can download the app and check out the demo mode, it's more than just a tuner. If you are into that sort of thing, you can mount your phone and use it as a rev counter and other things. Check out the app.
Once an FP3 has been used on a bike, it is then linked to that bike's computer, it cannot be used for another bike. So, you won't find anywhere that uses an FP3 to tune bikes.
Look for Dyno (rolling road) engine tuning places. They'll be able to tune your bike. If you are just fitting a new exhaust then, generally, you won't need a tune. If you change the air filter, then the engine will breath differently and will need a tune.
I haven't tried short shots, I went for big shots on my dyna. Short shots are really loud and the noise will be right in your, and any passenger's, ears seeing as the pipes are short. Also, I've heard that because they are short, the engine never really breathes properly (on a stage 1), even after a tune but you'd need info from someone who has them to get the real lowdown.
CoC/COIR Chili Cook off this weekend. Going out with the club to help raise money for a local toy run for charity. Should be a really good time. Raffles, (hopefully) decent chili, and family...cant ask for much more.

If you want to go, just show up! If you want to ride in with me (or find out where I'll be), shoot me a PM and we will go from there.
I took 7 bikes and one cage (my wife and kids) out for a BBQ lunch at Kreuz Market. Mighty damn tasty! I should never be allowed to order meat by the pound....spent about $50 on brisket, sausages, and turkey. I didn't get any pictures, but here is a MAP of the route we took.
On a side note, if you are riding in a group here are a few lessons learned from the weekend:
Listen to your Road Captain, if he says to check your tire pressure or there is another issue with your bike, FIX IT before you leave or dont leave with the group.
If for some reason the person leading your group changes that is NO REASON to leave people in a parking lot. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS make sure you know that the rest of your riding group is with you before pulling out.
If you have an issue with your Road Captain having you do a pre-ride check, shut the fuck up and do what you are told. It's a matter of safety for the group.
I had a bit of an incident this weekend where a rider didn't want to do a pre-ride check. Same guy was given lead after lunch since he knew a different route to get back home, he then proceeded to leave me and a guy who couldn't get his bike started sitting in a parking lot.
yeah so, this is why I bought a VROD. I wanted the reliability of the Porsche designed engine along with liquid cooling and fuel injection. I love all Harley's but I don't want another one anytime soon because the failure rate has always had me concerned. My 2008 VRSCDX hasn't had any mechanical issues other than I recently had to flush, fill, and bleed the hydraulic clutch which was my fault for not doing it often enough.
This is not to say I don't like the look and riding feel of some of the other models, like the Fat Bob, but its hard to say that Harley's don't have maintenance problems with a straight face. But Harley owners are among the happiest according to more of the report: http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/magazine/2015/05/motorcycle-reliability-and-owner-satisfaction/index.htm
Interesting. Victory bike owners love theirs and I was surprised to see the failure rate on BMW.
it was a last minute, 'almost' emergency thing. here is a LINK for the ride.
i had to go to colorado to take care of some thigns with my house that im trying to sell and it had to be done over a holiday weekend. so i skipped out of work on a friday and got back to texas on monday.
They don't have a "home" for all of them, but it looks like they were posting one every few days on Instagram. Most of the Custom Kings posts have four pictures together. Here's a quick example.
Pretty sure the paint options were Skyway Blue, Flight Red, Black, and maybe Silver. I used to own a book called "How to Restore Your Harley Davidson Motorcycle" which was out of print last I looked, and it would tell you even what kind of finish was on which bolts- parkerized, nickel plate, or what have you. I'm sure the paint options were listed, too. They're expensive as hell if you can find one (about $300 for the paperback).
Whoops! Found a few for $200.

I experienced the exact same thing and was about to give up on a Harley bagger because of the buffeting, After owning multiple SGs (2006 and 2016) I test rode a RG and night and day difference for me...the buffeting was gone, completely. But, on your SG the buffeting may not be coming over the fairing but from under. There are multiple products that are designed to help, I've tried the fork fangs that are ugly as hell but worked a little, different shield helped a little but nothing eliminated it. There is one other product I would suggest you try before going the swap route ( I never tried it but heard good things about it):
https://www.amazon.com/Rudyness-Deflector-Touring-Electra-2014-2018/dp/B07DK6WPCJ
I would also suggest you try a Road Glide before going the swap route and if it works for you there is a thread here:
Again, the Road Glide stopped all buffeting for me but I think you should ride one before going the swap route.
This isn't advice to plug a motorcycle tire, just what I use/have done for myself.
I have both 1/8" plug patch and 1/4".
Tire must be removed. You can not do a proper tire repair without removal. Since most don't do their own tires or have the equipment and must pay someone to R/R the tire and balance. It often makes more sense to replace the tire at that time.
There's a bunch of info online from the plug patch manufactures on how to actually use one and complete a proper repair of a tire(not a MC tire).
I'm also on a sportster and use this. Plugs into the SAE adaptor and I ran it up under my tank and zip-tied it to the lower part of my handlebars. Works perfectly for me. YMMV.
Take the battery inside and put it on a tender. My bike is in a storage unit 2 miles from my house that doesn’t have electric. But to answer your question, there is a solar battery tender. My buddy uses it.
Here's one that fits. Harley has one for the sportster in black for $400, the part# is 57070-97dh and 57070-98 for one with only primer.
Use this, cheap enough and you won’t damage anything

if you look on amazon you can get a battery tender for fairly cheap. With my bike I plug it in when I put it in storage and unplug it when I'm ready to ride. I don't do anything else to the bike to winterize except change the oil in the spring. Edit: Here's the tender I bought, it's 25 bucks...(https://smile.amazon.com/Battery-Tender-021-0123-Junior-Charger/dp/B000CITK8S/ref=lp_15707061_1_2?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1480528572&sr=1-2)
Amazon. This is the exact kind I used.
I went with this one for $50 from Amazon. Side-by-side, the only difference I can make out with an HD Daymaker is the little bar and shield w/ a light in the bottom-center. I've been running it for a few months now and it's a great light. Also, with Prime shipping, I had it two days after placing the order.
I'm in the Phx area as well, cooling vest from Amazon, has been treating me pretty well the last couple weeks.
I use those thumb screws off Amazon. Never lost one ever.

I have a ‘17 Slim, added a sissy bar and one of those $15 suction cup pillion pads (suggestion from someone here) and I stack that mother high, I can carry quite a bit. If I had the Motherwell rack (but I ain’t paying $150 for that tiny thing) I could stack more behind the sissy bar but so far I haven’t needed to.
I also bought 4 of these strap rings (link below) that I bolted onto the bolts on the sissy bar and onto the fender struts on each side so I can strap things more securely. I pull a 12”x12” (also on Amazon, $8 bucks) cargo net around it all and I’m good to go, it’s worked well.
Not expensive and better than jamming a piece of wood in the primary-my opinion

Check Amazon, or an independent shop. I got my sissy bar with a backrest for $80 the one with a luggage rack was $120 at the Indy shop by me. If you want to have them separately there's this rack that replaces the rear hoop on the fender so you can still use the quick detach hardware.
Probably something you've already tried, but they have order tracking here:

Also, I forgot to mention it before, but if you're being geo-locked, now is a good time to investigate many of the cheap-ish VPN providers who have access points all over the world. Using that you can present to the world as having a US-based IP address. I use NordVPN--I don't work for them or stand to benefit in any way--and it's $12/mo but can be as cheap as $3.50/mo if you pre-pay. Cheaper than phone calls from Germany anyway.
Not a half helmet, but I sport this Captain America open face. It's comfy AF. Here's a pic:
The Jim's jig is pretty straightforward and easy to use. It is effectively a guide. You put it in the exhaust port & bolt it on using the other remaining stud and it locates a drill bushing around/over the broken stud. The drill bushing aids in alignment & centering of the drill.
I have done far more of these than I care to admit(Former motorcycle mechanic with the bulk of my time on the HD performance engine build side). I am ABSOLUTELY against pulling a head to do this repair. If this stud has a clear line of access I would go for either the weld a nut or the Jim's drilling fixture. Without looking at a bike I can't recall if the frame tube blocks the path of a drill bit.
It's a hand toss on trying welding first. It has a high probability of success. But in failure it requires grinding off the weld to somewhat square it up and it means you are potentially drilling through hard weld to start when you try the drilling fixture.
If you don't have clear straight line access to the stud. IMHO it is less work to unbolt the engine. Shift it so you have a straight line of access for the drill. You don't have to pull it, you just have to unbolt it so you can slide/twist it away from the primary.
Here is the Jim's drilling fixture pdf instructions are on that page also.
If you can sneak a drill by the frame but the drill itself is the issue. You can use a 12" aircraft drill to move the drill farther back so it doesn't interfere with the frame. Such as this Vernont High Speed Steel. You do not want a Carbide drill for this. HSS is fine.
Some bikes/studs this is enough to allow the drill to just kiss the frame tube as it passes it. I hose clamp a piece of tin like a soup can or zip tie a rag around the frame tube to protect it from rubbing
Just saw this on amazon and thought Of this post. Hope the link works

Congrats on getting the bike! To be honest with you, I have no idea what brand it is. My mechanic had one lying in his store and when he was replacing my spacer bolt I asked how much to throw that on as well and he just did it all once. The net i have is just a cheap one from Amazon.

It’s an Amazon special to be honest, I purchased new stainless hardware as the crap they send with it looked aluminum and like It would break if you stall torqued it down. It was 28 bucks. I will share the link to the one I got.
Id highhhhly suggest changing the head lamp to the amazon daymaker. Provides a lot of extra vision and also will hopefully grab the attention of drivers to see you. You will need a different lamp housing. I did however, mash the LED bulb into the stock unit but it took a bit of effort.
This kit has everything you need for quite a bit cheaper, and the compressor directly attaches to a tender plug (and other options): https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0068FX3VO/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_7?smid=A1IKFJQXCN8Q6U&psc=1
Start by swapping out parts and customizing your bike. You'll find that it's not hard at all, and you'll build the confidence to do bigger and/or more involved projects over time.
When it comes to repairs, you should have a copy of the repair manual for your bike.
Also, it's not really about motorcycle maintenance, but I recommend reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Not only is it a good book, but it's full of information about how motorcycles work and the mentality of a person who works on their own bike.
I'm definitely looking forward to the long-open stretches with nothing but my thoughts and an open road. Ever since I read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance a decade ago in college, I promised myself I'd do a trip like this.
I'm sure someone better than me has an answer. But it looks like a heritage classic. I'm not sure what they called them back when they had kick starts.
Looks like its a mid 70's model to me.
If you're serious about taking this on as a project, pick up a copy of "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" and always remember that is a certified badass bike.
Good luck.
Make sure the body is one-piece, hardened steel. You can spend about $100 on a lock that lets out an alarm shriek if tampered with. Cheap insurance. Watch the video on Revzilla's page.
I had these on my '90 Sporty, didn't have to relocate the signals. amazon link
With the slant, they fit quite nicely between the shocks and signals.
I use one of these http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010NNPNDW?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01 I have a 3/4th helmet and straight drag pipes and hear just fine, phone calls not so much.
I have also used the sena bluetooth when riding with my father who has a pair we link up, I prefer the sena due to having a built in radio.
I also ride 60 miles every day, get a good charge out of either. I can ride 2-3 days before charging but I charge it every second day when I get home.
They both allow my phone to pause music, and have volume control.
Yeah, search for any generic touring bike cover with a cable and lock for the bottom. The good ones are felt lined so your windshield aren't scratched (you'd be amazed how easily they can be trashed on a windy day if you just cover your bike with a plastic tarp or fabric drop cloth). They can melt the instant they touch a hot exhaust if you don't have time to let the bike cool before putting the cover on, so be careful how you put the cover on and you'll be OK. I got mine on Amazon, but if you don't have Prime and can't wait four or five days, import bike shops will be cheaper than the Harley dealer (not the BMW dealer- their prices are similar). Most of the good ones come with a poly window (or hole cut out with velcro closure) for the license plate, so the cops don't cut it if they decide they need to know what bike is under it. Avoid the $20-30 ones. They're junk and aren't felt lined for the windshield, and the seams tear easily.
I have these IASUS Xsound 3 speakers in my helmet. Excellent sound quality.
Not bluetooth though.
Semi-unrelated - for those of us with touring bikes that have a cigarette lighter in the fairing, the lighter assembly can be removed and replaced with one of these (or similar).
I had to take a dremel to hole the lighter mounts in to open the bore very slightly. It locks in solid and the same leads that run to the lighter will fit the usb socket.
I don't smoke and have no use for the lighter, so this was a much cleaner solution, for me, than using a car adapter.
Just bought this for mini sleeping-bag. It's so small that it's ridiculous, also quite warm surprisingly. Oh, and it's 40 bucks

Worse than the "Lone Wolf" rockers (or my personal favorite, groups of people wearing matching "Lone Wolf" rockers at the same event!) is the "Authentic Leather Biker Vest with 42 Patches" pre-fab Amazon bullshit.
Go to any biker rally in America and you'll see at least half a dozen grown-ass men wearing one...
This is the setup I used on my '01.
It comes with a combination sensor/module that goes in the nose cone, a set of cut-to-fit plug wires, and a single-fire ignition coil (fires each cylinder independently, as opposed to the dual-fire "wasted spark" factory coil) along with all the connectors you'll need to install it.
One of the benefits of an aftermarket ignition module is the ability to program it for a specific advance curve. The Ultima (and nearly identical but more expensive Dynatek 2000i) have four separate advance curves that are preset in the unit, and they have a capability to program user-defined curves if you buy a cable for it.
I found this?

you should have a trickle charger plugged in anytime it is parked especially if you live in an area that gets below frezzing, lead batteries will go flat in the cold.
there are electronics that constantly draw power when parked, like the security system, its just good habit, park it, connect it.
my 08 got 13 years out of the factory battery.
this is the one i have used for over 20 years
There are a few approaches you could take. Do you have a set of Torx sockets? You may be able to tap one in with a hammer, then try to crack them loose. You could try an impact driver. Much appreciated pal. The turn signals are some cheap ass LED’s I found on Amazon that came with smoked lenses. I took a gamble on them because they were only $50 total for both front and rear. Glad I did because they are as impressive as the $300 signals I’ve seen.

I’d recommend some handle bar straps.
(Full disclosure: never moved a sportster on a trailer, but have moved motorcycles in the bed of a truck, and the straps have been worth their weight in gold)
Example:

They have this if you are able to disconnect the wires and feed it through. The wire loom has a split in it so you can install over top of wires. It is typically ribbed to have some structure, which it needs because of the split.
I also have a ‘21 fxlrs and I bought a headlight bucket, H4 extension, and this headlight. It’s damn good too. The oem day maker is trash.
Buy you one of these, you won't regret it. I used to ride from Austin to Houston and back each week, which is 4 hours one way. My butt would be done by the end of those 4 hours. Got one these air pads and used it for a 13 hour straight ride to Knoxville, TN. I was amazed.

Google mechanic, I’ve been building performance engines and dyno tuning for 20 years. It’s not what google tells me it’s what physics tells everyone, those pipes have essentially no flow after the valve closes and what does physics say about that? The slow gas velocity is under a higher pressure, about 14.7psi of back pressure. Back pressure impedes flow and can even push exhaust gas back into the combustion chamber as well as the fresh intake out into the air cleaner. I agree with all advice offered. I 'd add, look into some Anti-vibe gloves. If nowhere else, MechaniX brand has some good ones. https://www.amazon.com/Mechanix-Wear-M-Pact-Gloves-Large/dp/B01GCMKQYY/ref=mp_s_a_1_11?crid=3QNO3RIJ9XC13&keywords=anti-vibe+gloves+MechaniX&qid=1660939468&sprefix=anti-vibe+gloves+mechanix+%2Caps%2C223&sr=8-11
Have you considered blind rivet nuts?
Get a ring compressor the right size. I was going to recommend this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08DG91S6D?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_dt_b_product_details
but looks like out of stock. Just did pistons, rings and cylinders on my Panhead. The old cylinders will go out to get bored and matched pistons during the winter for a spare set.
Take the time to have the cylinders bored if you are going to go to the trouble of pulling it apart. If the new rings dont solve the problem (due to out of round cylinders) you will just have to do it again with new pistons.
I bought this for working on my Fat Boy https://www.amazon.com/OrionMotorTech-Dilated-Scissor-Adventure-Motorcycle/dp/B01M0AB7MJ/
It works great for my bike. Takes some learning to lift your bike when you want the kickstand up.
I use it a lot.
The Harley mount is probably superior. I also got Amazon quick detach mounts for both of mine. They aren’t perfect and needed a little bit of fitting but they also hold up well. I have heard the ones that come in multiple pieces aren’t all that great so both of mine are the solid type
(that probably doesn’t make sense so this is the one I got most recently Amazicha Detachable Two 2 Up Tour... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082V3CG1W?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share)
One of the QD clips came off at some point during a trip and I replaced it with some different Amazon clips. I just put some lock tite on it and haven’t had trouble since. Now I just double check them more frequently to make sure they aren’t working loose.

Infact because I have this and I keep it in my swingarm bag. I'm thinking I'll remove the USB caddy just to free up that space and make my 1970s themed M8 Fat Boy look even more chopper like.
There are plenty of shorty end allen wrench options out there.
I have a set of these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006O4AGU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Works great for short areas.
My HD risers came with a little allen sort piece that lets me deal with the bolts.
A whole set will set you back $15 This is what I used as a metal smith in the Marine Corps on the helicopters.
I picked up a clear set of frames from Amazon meant for riding. $30 but they also tint when coming into contact with the sun so these may be up your alley for the morning. I rock the Daytona Captain America, had one that saved my life back in the 70's & I wear it as a tribute. Pic:
Just hook it up to the battery directly. Also you can get a cool battery meter that I use from time to time:
I think these might work. Honestly should just be any muffler clamp.

It is a bag from Amazon that is zip tied in place. The bag does not seem to get unreasonably hot. I usually just keep a couple 5 hour energy and some sunscreen in it. It is not a very big bag. https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B09KQSHZ8T/ref=twister_B09NK95675?_encoding=UTF8&th=1
