HoMM3 is still alive and kicking! You can get it for cheap at GoG.com. Be sure to download the HD mod and Horn of the Ancients (HoTA) as well. Both are fanmade addition that improve the game and add a new castle, creatures, campaigns, adventure sites and so on.
Best avoid the Steam HoMM3 HD version. It's only the base game (so not even the expansions).
Another good option is HoMM5, the remake most like HoMM3, albeit in a different universe. You can get this at GoG as well (without DRM). Graphics may look a bit dated, but the game is a good heir with long campaigns, a decent story and of course 3D townscreens! Another fanbase addition is the HoMM 5.5 which adds some stuff (adventure sites etc.) and even a graphics update.
Recently I've been having a swell time with MMH7, the most recent addition. Though it's sometimes buggy it's quite entertaining and the graphics are neat. Best get it through the Ubisoft Store to prevent double DRM (I had this with MMH6 and it's a pain).
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
One way is through the popular GameRanger client that can be downloaded here. It automatically reads what games you have and finds the servers for you for that game. Other than that, it'll most likely be through other clients like that because I'm not sure you can port forward to get it running.
Lets see an example: assuming that you have 25 pit lord and you're trying to resurrect 100 gremlins. Here are the 3 rules:
The resulting number of resurrected demons is minimum of these rules outcome, so it will be 11 demons.
This example comes from FizMiG (comprehensive russian homm3 guide)
45 imp should brought you 4 demons if you had enough pit lords, maybe you've already used raising ability or another dead stack was lying upon your imps preventing them to be revived as demons.
UCP Hotfix is finally available.
Please test it and report any bugs you find, thus you will help with this mod's development (bugs we're not aware of cannot be fixed).

Don't pick me as I already have the games but I wanted to tell my story on how I got in touch with my first HOMM game.
I was in my 2nd year of University (mid-1990's) and one of my floormates came over with a CD that had a good 50 games on it. He came from from the middle east (Syria I think?) . One of them was HOMM 1 which I loved even though it was really hard during the later levels. It's one of those games where you start playing and when you look up several hours has passed. Since then I bought the game probably a good 3 to 4 times including having on GOG.com as they came out with different versions.
Definitely! It is because the community modders that MMH7 is still played a lot (Wryn Pendragon: Umbramancer or UCP for example). And, in the end, if it weren’t for mods in Heroes 3, not that many people would play it, too.

Note: I believe you have to have the complete edition or the Tribes of the East expansion for this mod. Unsure if you are playing the vanilla game without the expansions. Anyway it's a excellent mod that makes the entire game a whole lot more fun.
My first guess was a signed 16bit integer roll over value. But that would be 32,767+1.
http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/932491-heroes-of-might-and-magic-ii-gold/cheats lists some more cheat codes.
Maybe I'll try taking them apart.

You can read more here: Might & Magic: Heroes 5.5 (RC10 Beta 4) file - Mod DB
It basically does some balancing, a better random map generator and more heroes.
Could you provide me with more details? I saw it happening with Fortress (the game showed that I'd already acted that turn) but haven't found out what it causes so far.
I'd really like to fix that in my patch
You can play almost any Title of the Series on Linux either with Lutris or Proton!

I don't have time to filter through my entire map stash. Just look for names that would probably match what you're looking. I've also included maps from HoTA. Enjoy :D
You can go the hard way with a virtual machine in which you can install an old OS, then the game.
The medium way manually emulating it with DosBox and running it.
Or the easy way buying it from GOG.com (classic HoMM games go on sale easily under 3 bucks from time to time). It has DosBox integrated in the installation and includes digital extras like manual, charts, soundtrack and so. Old games = GOG, always.
Look if you are still able to ask for a refund (I think that if you played no more than about 2 hours it's ok). That HD Edition was another insult from Ubisoft to the Heroes of Might & Magic series, ending in the vanilla Heroes III with a little pixel-polishing and that's all, 15 bucks.
If you are not able to refund it anymore, well, the base game is still pretty enjoyable, so you can still play it until you want more content and go for the Complete Edition on GOG.com, which goes on sale regularly for a very little price.
Hi, I've downloaded it, but trying to put it into either C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\HoMM3 HD
or
\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete [GOG.com]
Gives a message saying "HoTa must be installed on heroes of Might and Magic III SoD or Complete. Selected folder does not contain required heroes of might and magic III files, so installion of HoTa is impossible.

Any ideas? really not sure what to do
Yeah, but on the PC you actually want the gog.com Complete Edition, as Steam's HD Edition is missing the Random Map Generator, a must for most people, besides all the extra content and the Steam version is $5 more expensive too :)
Concerning playing it on an iPad, if you're willing to jailbreak your/an older iOS device, there are many options.
Avoid all always-online DRM from Ubi; you won't be able to play it in a few years without a crack and if you're going to run a crack anyway, why buy it all ? Get the DRM-less HoMM 3-5 from gog.com instead.
Hey
In my spare time, I create my own heroes like mobile game and need some feedback. In that moment in the game is only possible to play 4 scenario with bots or another player. Game is free without ads you can download it from google play
What do you think
I agree about Ubisoft selling HoMM to Paradox, but Ubisoft are greedy little pieces of shit and they won't do it, they'd much rather stain the name of HoMM by releasing more trash. Did you know they released a mobile trash based on HoMM3? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ubisoft.might.magic.heroes.fantasy.rpg
It has anime graphics and is covered in paywalls, the gameplay is completely automated.
I can't wait for SoC too, seems like the best upcoming game for my taste.
Wow, thank you so much for this info! But I still want clarification on number 4 that relates to my case.
I've bought this game collection that supposedly has all the expansions: http://www.amazon.com/Heroes-Might-Magic-Complete-Collection/dp/B004WO57E4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1418347665&sr=8-1&keywords=heroes+of+might+and+magic
Now, some people claim that first two games don't work, but they said 3 and 5 work fine and for that price, I really can't complain. So if I got the disc with all the expansions on it, but separately, what expansion should I start and end with? Is there a way to "merge" them?
