If you're finding that interesting, you'll want to read Jade Gurss's Beast, which details the development of a special Mercedes-branded one-off by Ilmor engineering for the 1994 Indianapolis 500. It's a little too positive for my taste on one of the factors that helped wreck the sport, but it's well written and you will learn a lot.
It's called Canvas. It's a popular app/website for colleges to use as places for students to turn in assignments, answer questions posted by professors, keep track of grades, etc. I'm not OP but my school uses the same thing.
Bourdais had exactly the same car, engine, and tires. So why would Alonso had is easier than him?
Al Unser Jr had it easy in 1994. He was running a Chassis and Engine that nobody else had, and ended up lapping the field.
If it was easy to win simply by seating in an Andretti car, then Marco would've won it already. The driver clearly still matters.
If you’re interested in this car, I highly recommend reading the book about the development of the special one off engine powering it!
No one's going to mention us, but my Dad and I do a podcast called "The IndyCar Fan Podcast"
What are you trying to learn? Basically what we do is after each race we dig into the lap charts and sector times and stuff and go over each phase of the race, when drivers make their stops and why, and basically work our way towards how the finishing order ends up the way it is. We cover almost every single drivers performance. To my knowledge no other podcast really does this - they're more focused on paddock rumors and twitter buzz and stuff like that.
Essentially we recap the race from a both a race-strategist perspective and fan perspective.
We put up our Detroit weekend recap last night actually! You can listen here: https://open.spotify.com/show/3ZDm1rRefwLYsAzIhLLIPR
Or here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1710805/8710632
Or anywhere with podcasts really.
In case anyone wants to track the storms: https://weather.com/weather/radar/interactive/l/46222:4:US
They seem spotty, and are popping up out of nowhere in Illinois and moving in from there. So there's a chance of it storming, but it's not like it's a big front moving in and the cells are small so they wouldn't last long.
The car isn't planted to the track like it is in iRacing, and its actually possible to countersteer slides. (which is what a lot of the real life drivers have been complaining about in the recent iracing series). Sound design is also way better as you can hear in the video, and its cheaper than the iRacing model.

If you are planning to attend races even semi regularly, consider buying a scanner and programming it yourself. I now own a BC125AT for $93. Works flawlessly.

there is a TON of rain on still to fall, then they still got to dry it, it might be wash as others said

edit storm is moving northeast, hopefully the storm moves more north and miss the track.
edit rain is past, time to dry and go racing hopefully
This isn't much, but it works: http://www.stream2watch.cc/live-television/united-states/abc-live-streaming
This is supposed to be streaming the race, hasn't started yet though: https://www.twitch.tv/nascarfan125
Yes it’s based on Dr. Olvey’s. In fact we’ve worked close with the publisher on issuing a new hardcover edition with a new chapter and a new afterword by Dario Franchitti. It will be released this month in the USA.
Be wary of those free VPNs. The way those work is that you get access to the IP addresses of the other users using that VPN and they get access to your IP address. Some not so nice people could be on your IP address doing something worse than streaming a motorsport event.
This isn't the case on paid for VPN services. I personally use WindScribe because they had a lifetime membership a year or two back for around $50 I believe.
From what I recall, the rules were changed, er 'clarified' after this ... the 'Zanardi rule" specified that if four wheels left the racing surface, the pass would be considered illegal. The technicality that Ganassi used was that Zanardi was already ahead if Bryan Herta by the time he went off-track.

As a follower of his, I'll admit he lets his personality show quite a bit, but there's no denying that he is as passionate a fan as anyone and I appreciate the time and effort that it takes him to keep the Twitter feed going. Also, I grew up on 90s era Champ Car and it is no secret that Champweb did too and does a great job serving that fanbase and reminding us and newer fans of those glory years - there's a recent interview with him here where he explains his background and his intentions: https://player.fm/series/tsn-racing-pod/tsn-racing-pod-episode-59-with-don-sklenka. I hope he works something out with IndyCar because fan sites and blogs are a good sign of a growing series and they should be a part of the whole ecosystem as well.
Early indications are that it's not seasonal.
Suspect there will be a number of races without fans in the stands.
Can I suggest you install the "Live Guide" app? It shows you all channels worldwide that each sporting event is shown on, with their start time. Very useful

Speaking of Trammel, Olvey and ankle injuries I swear I remember reading in Rapid Response that after the Hamilton crashed they found bones inside his shoes and racing suit. The trauma response team at the track packed the bones in baggies, wrote R and L on each bag and taped them to each respective leg so the hospital team could put him back together. Hamilton credits that move for saving his feet.
Again, after mod discussion (hence the time it took to get back to you after your initial message) there is no intent, just banter. Fine line often, though.
I haven't played it in years, since I don't really do mobile gaming anymore, but I really enjoyed this
Definitely not video-based, but I would highly recommend the books Beast and The Unfair Advantage.
Indy Split by John Oreovicz is really good if you’re interested in the subject.
> I don't have cable
FYI, 14 of the 17 races this year are broadcast on NBC, which you can get with an antenna. I bought one this year for $25 that works well for me. If you live far from the broadcast antenna you may need a rooftop antenna instead.
Also, Peacock might be included with your ISP subscription, if you're with Comcast, Cox, or Spectrum. I watch practice and qualifying there, and the race vod if I can't catch it live.
What race will you be attending?
Regarding hearing protection and commentary: I've used the free IndyCar app to stream the IMS Radio broadcast via my earbuds. I then wear hearing protection over my ears so I can hear the radio better. These work well for my young children and me. There is about a 45–60 delay in the audio so you'll see the action before you hear about it, but it's still invaluable to hear of all the strategies and action that you can't see. At Road America, I was able to tune in to the trackside radio using the FM tuner on my Galaxy S9 so I didn't have the delay nor the data bandwidth limitations so you may consider buying a handheld FM radio if your track broadcasts the program. Otherwise, I've heard good things about the Bearcat BC125At scanner.
>They do still need to do a better job with a companion app or somewhere I can easily go to check stats/schedules/standings.

Been around for years now.
A great book about the CART era is CART, The First 30 Years...( I actually have 2 copies of it, if you can't find one)

John Oreovicz wrote an excellent book about the CART/IRL split

There are a few variations but they are all about $30. It was fantastic.
I know it's extra steps and expense, but you often can. I live in Germany, but have a NordVPN subscription and bought a US subscription to F1TV. Obviously that's only easy to do if you already have a foreign credit card of some kind, but you could potentially find ways around this with e.g. prepaid cards from another country or friends in countries with F1TV. Totally agreed that they should make it accessible everywhere, though
You can stream IndyCar Radio on your phone using the IndyCar app, the TuneIn app, IndyCar.com/radio, and probably several other methods as well. Keep in mind that as with any stream it will likely be delayed by 2-3 minutes from live action. You will also be at the whim of your cell service.
A cheaper option to a scanner would be a simple AM/FM radio. We almost always have a local affiliate in-market that you can tune in to but admittedly I’ve not seen our affiliate list for St. Pete yet. There is no discernible delay compared to live action with this method as well.
A noise-canceling headset with built-in radio can be found on Amazon for around $50 (https://www.amazon.com/Digital-Earmuff-ZOHAN-Protection-Perfect/dp/B07H8YLV4Z/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?adgrpid=58943857674&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIuv3VvoGA9gIVkP7jBx03rAngEAAYASAAEgJhF_D_BwE&hvadid=274839758112&hvdev=m&hvlocphy=9016170&hvnetw=...) or maybe less if you shop around a little.
Hope that helps!
/u/nascarman_rr has done a couple of retro driver and race shirts. Dale Jr was wearing a Gordon Smiley shirt in a recent podcast which is where I first saw it. I audibly said "Holy shit; where did he find that!?".
Google led me to nascarman's TeeSpring store: https://teespring.com/stores/nascarmans-store?aid=marketplace&tsmac=marketplace&tsmic=campaign
They'll be OK. I purchased the Racing Radios ear muffs twice and the headband broke both time so I got these and they work well:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08Z7W4MHS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1
Consider practicing wearing the ear muffs around the house so the kid gets used to the feel.
By any alcohol the day before. Carryout alcohol starts at noon on Sundays, which is too late. Cans only.
Freeze some bottles of water instead of using ice cubes. You'll have cold water for the walk back.
Backpack coolers are better than any other form. This is the one you want, it has lasted me for years: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N5WHYPH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apan_glt_fabc_KWGGEYZZVR1RHRYK4665
Rolling coolers suck, and styrofoam coolers will fall apart, leaving you to carry your food and drink in Kroger bags.
Comfortable shoes (not open-toe), hat, sunscreen, snacks, and a trash bag are must-bring items.
Accuweather says temps and winds will rise steadily until 4pm, then wind will stabilize at 13mph and temp will drop a couple degrees after 4.
Sling TV. The Blue package has NBC and NBCSN. The NBC races aren't available everywhere though but You can link your Sling account to your NBC Gold account and watch all the races live through the app that way.
You can watch the races live with the Sling TV streaming service. It's $20 a month for the Blue package which gets you NBC and NBCSN (+other channels). I never had an issue watching races on NBCSN but when it came to the NBC races I think it only shows in select markets. That was really confusing when when I went to watch it the Indy500 and it didn't show up. Luckily I figured out you can link you Sling account to NBC Gold and watch all the races LIVE through the app that way.
Yep. I went last year with my wife and kids and we stayed in an apartment about a 5 minute walk at most from the gate (via hotels.com, but it was basically an AirBNB) and it was totally the way to do it. There's basically nothing to do, eat, etc, immediately there, but it still was much easier to go back, chill out for a minute, and grab an uber out to dinner than it would have been to commute in. And you could totally walk to stuff too I'm sure if you wanted to.
Plus, hearing race engines from the other series ripping around the track first thing when you wake up is a great way to start the day.
In an on-going series of "Indycar mentions in UK daytime quiz shows", Indy 500 winners was a category in the final of Pointless yesterday.
The aim of the show is to name the most obscure answers that none of the randomly polled public could name. The contestants tried Mario Andretti, and Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Sigh.
Mario wasn't pointless - from what I remember, most drivers were apart from Dario, Sato, Graham Hill and Jim Clarke.
Still, baby steps. How long is it until St Pete now?
Some more anecdotal info for anyone curious: The live sessions on Peacock worked great in Europe over VPN (I use NordVPN), but the NBC Sports livestream did not work over VPN due to the way NBC Sports handled their regional advertisements / commercial breaks. Thankfully everything will be on Peacock next year!
There is a DVD about the 2016 Indy 500 that had radio chatter.

Going to Gateway! So I just got my tickets yesterday. When I went to CotA a few years ago, a scanner at the track was like $50. And I've always meant to just buy my own to bring.
Does anyone know what I should be looking for on Amazon? This has pretty good reviews on Amazon, but then the comments mention needing a license to use it and I'm not looking to get in trouble or anything haha.
Any help would be appreciated here. Not looking to break the bank as I only go to 1-2 races a year at most.
There is a pretty cool documentary on them... They have now had their name changed to AMR safety team from Holmatro but they're the same folks.

Each series has a movie about the movement from acceptable driver death to modern safety -
1 (about F1, natch) and Rapid Response about CART from Steve Olvey's great book
Looks like I own these based on my amazon order history: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004U4A5RU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_QkTLCb6D8WB7D
They don’t take any power directly. I’ve used them at Gateway, IMS, and now COTA and could hear the radio fine even with cars in front of me. Usually listen to the TV or Radio broadcast and to race control when there is an incident. Haven’t tried anything with intercom features. I agree, that seems expensive.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I ended up going with How to Build a Car and The Limit: Life and Death on the 1961 Grand Prix Circuit which is currently only $2.50 on Amazon.

I see a lot of you guys can work your way to watch IndyCar on NBC Sports Gold via VPN but I simply CAN'T get the video to load. I'm using NordVPN and everything works fine with my paid IndyCar pass until I try to load any of the Free Practices. The video window says "Initializing" but it never loads. I've been trying for hours dozens and dozens of US servers on NordVPN's list but the result is always the same.
I've also read some other Redditors using ProtonVPN and I tried their free servers as well, but again it gets stuck on "Initializing". I know it's not a problem with my connection, I've been streaming from US Netflix and other VOD platforms easily. I think there's some kind of new IP control going under NCB Sports Gold's webpage code. If any of you has a solution for this, please let me know, at this point I'm getting stressed out of my mind. Thank you all!
Has always been blacked out locally. Has nothing to do with SellOut status.
You can check reddit thread for people that are offering live streams.
Alternative is to use a service like and then use the ESPN app.
I bought this one for the 500 and it works great: https://www.amazon.com/MIER-Insulated-Cooler-Backpack-Leakproof/dp/B01NAI5NEE/ref=sr_1_6?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1528821147&sr=1-6&keywords=cooler+backpack
Plan to use it for Road America too.
Can't speak for IMS, as I've never been there, sadly. But I can hear them all the way around Phoenix.
The stock antenna is useless. It might as well be a 50 ohm resistor soldered to an SMA connector. I use a Nagoya 771.
From my experience going to the Indy several years ago, grandstands are not covered. As others have stated, a hat, sunscreen, water bottle, and seat cushion are all recommended. If you can get one of those seat cushions with a back on it, all the better.
Pro tip 3: Get yourself a skinny cooler. Fit under the slim spot in the bleachers and you still have ample foot room. http://smile.amazon.com/Rubbermaid-Can-Briefcase-Cooler-Red/dp/B0000644AE?sa-no-redirect=1

Quite pricey, but I got mine from a third party vendor for £10 less than RRP. It's a nice coffee table book, but not easy to read in bed, as I found out last night.
