[Reposting a shorter version of the video] The driver of the white car had his friend come to the scene of the accident and give a false report to the police officer, making himself a “witness to the accident“. The cop interviewed both of them first and then came to me, I told him that I had dash cam video but he wanted me to explain what happened first. I did and the officer looked very confused and asked to see the video. Apparently, the driver who hit me and his made up a wild story about me driving erratically and weaving in and out of lanes, ultimately ramming into his car. The officer was very close to criminally charging the “witness“ for providing false testimony to a police officer. Needless to say, the driver of the white car was cited for the accident and I was not. The officer did say that the DashCam video saved me from being at fault as he would have had to rely on the driver and “witness“ account of the accident which was wildly different from what actually happened.

I have this one (Garmin Mini) and it works great. I wanted something small you can’t easily see so it wouldn’t get stolen.

I caught this on a Prime day a few years back and it's fantastic. It sits neatly behind the rear view mirror so I can't see it while driving. (Which I prefer over the ones that are visible)
It was an Apeman but it looks discontinued. Plenty of others in the same category. This one here looks like a great option with a slew of good reviews. Doesn’t need to be phenomenal quality because you aren’t making a movie, you’re saving your ass!

If you have a backup camera you can buy a 360 camera system. The main purpose is to replace your backup camera and give you the overhead 360 view but most of them have a built in DVR that records all 4 sides similar to this video. Here is one I intend on buying.
Not OP but I just got this rear view mirror dash cam with the rear camera for about $60 plus $20 for a memory card and it seems to work pretty well with great reviews that are actual real reviews according to fakespot.com
There's some more expensive fullscreen rear view mirror options but I'm cheap so the former is what I went with.
I liked that full suited roundhouse kick from that dude. I was not expecting BOTH of them to be in suits.
Road ragers are one of the reasons I got a dashcam. Especially living in LA with all the angry, fucked up people here. I have a no name cam but TBH I should've gone with the A119 that was recommended by everyone on here. I actually just ordered the A129 Pro duo that just came out for wife's car. Looks like a really nice cam.
EDIT: Also, really recommend a high endurance SD card like this since dashcams put a lot of read/write cycles on sd cards.
Well it says Rexing dash cam on the bottom. They aren't cheap but seem like legit products https://www.amazon.ca/Rexing-Dashboard-Recorder-G-Sensor-Recording/dp/B00X528FNE
Most of their cameras use Sony sensors which are some of the best (if not the best) on the market.
They make specific covers for your windshield that uses magnets and hangs inside the door. Works like a charm, never freezes.
Here’s one from amazon. Link
Dash cam says April but this happened today August 31st 2018 on I-55 Chicago
Edit: It's hard to notice on the camera but the person that hit him truly had no time to stop. If you look closely and start counting after he passes the lines for the left lane, there was less than a second to react.
Both of them were perfectly fine with no cuts or physical damage (but they'll find out tomorrow what's fucked)

Watching that gave me a huge adrenaline shot too. Aren't you glad you have a dashcam though? If you had not braked in time, without any video insurance would likely determine that you're at fault. With video, that guy is now at least partially at fault for making an illegal turn (from a middle lane).
This is why I tell everyone to get a damn dashcam. IT's not hard. The /r/dashcams subreddit even as that sticky thread with recommendations that got updated and theres like a thousand different How-To videos on Youtube.
EDIT: FYI I recently decided to splurge on myself and upgrade to the new A129 Pro Duo
China's had a huge rise in car ownership in only a few years, so there's a lot of people driving who had little experience of being driven around or family car ownership. This is creating challenges.
There's an excellent book called Country Driving by Peter Hessler that is partly about this.
Edit: belated link to the book on Amazon. Really recommend it, it's a lot of fun and full of interesting stuff.
He quotes some questions from the written drivers exam, such as:
Q 81: After passing another vehicle you should
a) wait until there is a safe distance between the two vehicles, make a right turn signal, and return to the original lane.
b) cut in front of the other car as quickly as possible.
c) cut in front of the other car and then slow down.
Q 269 When you enter a tunnel you should
a) honk and accelerate.
b) slow down and turn on your lights.
c) honk and maintain speed.

Ideally, do all of your braking before turning the wheels, then release the brake smoothly before or as you turn in, find the apex, then apply the throttle gradually as you exit the turn, only getting full on it when you can travel in a mostly straight line. The slow in, fast out method.

I get an alert on my phone that only shows up when 6,000+ people (don't know the exact number) are listening.

There's a really good book by Vic Elford (former competitive driver who mostly drove Porsches) and he talks about the many things that typical drivers do wrong.
Like you pointed out, 10 and 2 is not only weak for providing steering effort, but it's also unstable. The weight of your arms atop the wheel instead of balanced at 9 and 3 means you'll have more see-sawing effect to control the car's motion. It also means you are pulling the wheel with your shoulders instead of pushing the wheel with opposing strong arm and chest muscles, benefiting from feedback from the tires and steering rack. Also, with any modern street-going vehicle with airbags, having your hands up high is a nice way to help break your arms/wrists if your airbag goes off. 9 and 3 or lower means the airbag will only push your hands away.
Another big one is the way people tend to tailgate before passing another car. He called this getting balked. When you run up on a slower moving car that you want to pass, if you get too close you not only have less visibility to see when you can pass, but also have to slow down more (and accelerate more) to actually execute the pass.
Good book and regardless of whether you drive a Porsche, there is a lot to learn. https://www.amazon.com/Porsche-High-Performance-Driving-Handbook-Elford/dp/0760327548/ref=sr_1_1

What you're looking for is something called a pipe bollard. It's a four foot length of pipe that has a flange welded on the bottom and then the pipe is filled with concrete.
You can bolt the flanges to the same concrete pad the sign is mounted to.
Make and mount the bollard appropriately and this would have cost a grand total of 2 bucks for more yellow paint.

It’s a great investment and has already covered me on one incident which would have been found no fault. I’d suggest the a119 on amazon. Easy to setup and get working.

This one. Best bang for your buck. Records in 1440p (higher than HD), and doesn’t use any batteries. It uses capacitors, and they don’t have the temperature sensitivities that batteries do. Capacitors also basically never go bad. It’s a simple, well built device. Couldn’t recommend it enough.

You don't come across as a very skilled or experienced winter driver.
There's also Librivox.org, which is a source of free public domain audiobooks. The recordings are made by volunteers. You may start listening to a book and become accustomed to the reader's way of talking, and suddenly you have a different reader. It's the same book, but a different person reading. The new person may not speak the same way; so, you may have to adjust your perception a little. In my experience, some readers were better than others, but none of them were horrible. So, I really appreciate Librivox especially since the price can't be beat.
I used Librivox to listen to Solomon Northup's Twelve Years A Slave. Anybody wanting a window to understanding the reality of slave times will want to read that or listen to this. This will have a stronger impact on people who easily create imagery in their minds.

Lol this is great.
But in all seriousness, texting and driving is absoutely the worst. Should come with more serioues penalties. Mine saved me a lot of money a few months ago when a delivery driver was texting and the driver drifted into my lane and side swiped my car. She argued that I had attempted to switch lanes into hers because she was in my blind spot. My dashcam vid settled that argument. I am now seriously thinking about getting a dual cam, specifically the new A129 Pro Duo since the A129 has always gotten rave reviews and this is the new and upgraded 4k one.
This is the one that I got and I'm very happy with it. And turns out I was wrong it's not 1080 it's 4k. Center button on the back locks a file so whenever I see something dumb/funny/scary/amazing I just hit that button then every couple of weeks I pop the memory card out, take it into the house and save the files from it, some day I'll edit it all and make a super cut off my travels.
ROVE R2-4K Dash Cam with WiFi and GPS 2160p Ultra-HD 2.4" LCD Dashboard Camera Recorder for Cars with G-Sensor, 150° Wide Angle, Star Light Night Vision https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B074JT3698/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_X3yaDbWPW130R
My current dash cam is a Rove R2. I'm very happy with it. It has great image quality, accepts a 128 GB card, and has GPS built in. It's very reasonably priced, too. I wanted one that's suction cup mounted so I can move it between my vehicles easily.
I think the video that I linked was taken with an older Z Edge camera.
I'd encourage you to look up videos of the Rove R2. I'm happy with mine.
And whatever camera you get you need to get a "high endurance" micro SD card. Get something that's meant for dash cams, "action cams", etc. Regular SD cards aren't able to be constantly written and rewritten to for long periods of time. Regular SD cards will fail after a few months and you'll be left with no recordings. I use Sandisk High Endurance cards. Samsung, Kingston, and Transcend also make equivalent cards.
I love my Rexing dash cam. It’s a bit pricey, but has front and rear cameras and connects to your phone via WiFi which I really like.
You're going to be surprised at how simple they are once you do put in some time to research them.
Mine is as simple as sticking it to the top of my windshield and plugging it in to the power. It will probably come with one of those power adapters that plugs into the circular-shaped power port (that cigarette lighter thing), but I got one of these and a long USB power cable instead, since it takes up less space and gives me an extra USB plug so I can charge whatever else.
I'd suggest this one, it's the one I have. The instructions are super easy to follow, and it has everything you need. They also have a comprehensive tutorial on their website if you need it.
You don't need to be techie to install a dashcam. You just need the dashcam and a few minutes. It must have taken me a total of 15 minutes to get my car set up with mine, and that includes the time it took to hide the wire properly.
One more note, if you are going to consider buying one. If your car gets hot while it's parked, consider getting a model that is detachable (like the one I referenced - you stick a small piece of plastic that allows the cam to clip on or off) or one that is mounted to the rear-view mirror. When your car gets hot, it softens the adhesive or suction, and the weight of the dasmcam might pull it away. In my case, the small piece of plastic is so light that it doesn't matter, I simply put it on and take it off when I need to. And if it's clamped to the mirror, the heat is a non-issue.
I got me 5 of these babies. Absolutely love them and I'll never go back to those horrible worthless plastic ones.
here is the one I have and I love it.
99 on Amazon. It even comes with the tool you need to hide the wire. Whatever you do get, make sure it does well in high and low heat.

I agree with you about towing capacity, but not that they should all be standard size. The size is indicated on the ball, but may have been worn off. The best way to tell is when you put the trailer on. If there is room after latching the trailer completely, then you have the wrong size. This is most practical if you are going to be pulling trailers regularly.
What I do believe however, is that no one should be pulling a trailer that doesn’t know what the hell they are doing.
We use these, they clip into the seatbelt receiver and attach to the dogs harness. Keeps her from jumping out windows, or coming up front and bugging the driver.
I live in Texas where temperatures have been consistently over 100F lately. I use a SpyTec A119. It uses a capacitor which is much more resistant to heat than standard batteries. It's also discreet, inexpensive, and the picture quality is good, so if you don't need any extra bells and whistles on top of basic function, I'd recommend it.
It's Veckle Mini 0906
At first, the quality was set to fine and it was a little blurry, but after switching it to Super Fine, the quality is awesome.
Please don’t use your hazards in bad weather. Not only is it illegal in many states, but it’s also dangerous.
“Hazard lights can actually reduce visibility making other drivers think you are stopped or stalled. They make it difficult to see if motorists ahead are tapping on the brakes and they don’t allow you to use your turn signals.”

I scrolled farther than I should have.
I think it looks kind of like the Caprice they have in Jacksonville... 60-0 is 125ft.
So using https://www.omnicalculator.com/physics/stopping-distance and plugging in 60, with 0 reaction added, and 25% grade, we've got about an equal calculation for the speed.
He needed to reduce his speed by 21mph, so plug that in to find distance needed. It's telling me it's 15ft.
I'm counting 7 sidewalk tiles the car crosses before being equal with the sign. The ones in front of my house are about 4.5ft long between contraction joints. While I'm not a resident of the county, I AM a resident of the state, so I presume the standards will be similar.
That's 31ish feet to reduce speed. He needed 15, I think there's plenty of room for error to say the person recording is entirely sensationalizing this, just as some cops try to peg people with higher tickets themselves.
Don't stoop to their level.
I couldn't add a hard-wire kit into my last car, so I got one of these:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BR5DR9F
It has a configurable voltage shut-off, so it'll keep power going to the camera until the car battery drops to that limit. It's great for parking at stores and what-not, but I'm not sure it would last overnight. I set the threshold a little on the higher side, and got about 4 hours before it finally turned off.

Configured the router with the DNS so all machines in the house get it without any software added.

Some handles here in the states have little metal things you can slide back to keep it on.
They're nice for people who have poor grip strength or arthritis but not so nice for people who are inattentive idiots.

I like the A119 clones. The picture quality is decent and it doesn’t have a battery inside. It has a capacitor to gracefully shut the camera off when you turn the car off. Batteries can fail in extreme cold or hot weather.

I do want to mention that the parking mode, which allows the camera to turn on in the event of a hit and run or something similar, doesn't necessarily work as advertised.
I believe it's this one, but it doesn't have a battery - runs off the 12V outlet.
I just bought one on amazon last week for $30. Then got a 32 gig micro sd from Best Buy for $20. It’s pretty good. It has a small internal battery, so with the motion sensor, it’ll record in park. It can cycle recordings up to 5 minutes, quality isn’t too bad, but I don’t think it’ll pick up plates at night unless you’re pretty close. Overall I recommend though
You're actually not supposed to use ratchet straps on those types of kayaks. You can get them too tight and bend the frame of the boat. I saw someone in Utah have a kayak strapped down to a trailer with it upside down and had the bottom of the boat caved in on itself. You are supposed to use something like these and only hand tighten them.

That's an idiot driver for sure, but dude... fix your dash cam mount. Heck a new universal one on Amazon is only US$9.
I just bought this one to use in a rental while mine is at a body shop (Yes, video is coming, once the investigation is finished) and it's hella stable, even with how awkwardly it holds my A119.
My theory is this:
The light had just changed, giving green to the left-to-right and right-to-left traffic.
Then, two separate bad decisions cooperated to create this fuckup.
First, the biker was coming from the right, intending to turn left onto the road where our viewpoint is. He was probably already traveling at speed, no one in front of him in the left turn lane, so he figures that if he guns it and cuts the corner on his turn (which is why he looks like he is in the crosswalk to you), he can save a minute on his left turn by making it before the oncoming traffic gets in the way of his turn.
If that was the only thing going on, he would have made it.
Unfortunately for biker dude, the white car coming towards us had a very similar idea. He probably saw a yellow light, and gunned it, trying to make it through the intersection before it changed to red.
Just as he's about to enter the intersection, he sees his light turn red. He's going much too fast to stop, so he figures he will just floor it and make it through the intersection before the left-to-right traffic can get moving from a standing start.
Unfortunately, he misjudges that timing .... oh shit oh shit he says to himself, so he swerves left a bit, hoping to make it around the just-starting-to-move cars in his way.
But he doesn't have enough time, the taxi hits him and spins him so he broadsides biker dude, who is in the crosswalk because he's trying to make that quick left turn ....
I love to do shit like this. I have a pack of these that I absolutely love to use for people like this. Best $10 I’ve ever spent.
Cement is alkaline, so buy concentrated vinegar on amazon and soak the bricks in a strong solution. Muriatic acid might do it too...follow the MSDS. You want to soften the cement.
Those exist and already are in use. Usually in the form of a breathalyzer installed in the car.

You can even buy them on Amazon if you wish:

Nice rant though :)
My current dash cam is a Rove R2. I'm very happy with it. It has great image quality, accepts a 128 GB card, and has GPS built in. It's very reasonably priced, too. I wanted one that's suction cup mounted so I can move it between my vehicles easily.
I recently got one for my dad as gift off of amazon. It's cheap and the video quality is far better than mine which is shown on this video.

Construction vehicles aren’t yellow for safety, they can be any colour lots are green, black, blue, red, orange etc.
They are coloured by brand or rental company, you just likely see Cat branded vehicles everywhere as they are the predominant large construction vehicle manufacturer. There isn’t some law they have to be yellow or something lol, that’s just silly.
Also, traffic cones aren’t always orange, they again can be any bright or contrasting colour, yellow and green are both common.
Reddit will upvote complete crap, it’s pretty funny actually.
No, zipper merging is the answer here. I agree, people who speed around and merge last second are a problem, and cause traffic to be worse. But people merging properly helps traffic flow. https://lifehacker.com/the-right-way-to-merge-lanes-to-avoid-traffic-jams-and-1501148503
Found it using bing maps. Southbound on George Washington Highway, Chesapeake, Virginia, USA. "Cooper's Restaurant" and then a 'Q' gas station selling for $3.49/gallon.

I own the VioFo A199 V3 and I really like it. It's able to withstand the Texas heat with no issue whatsoever. However, I would highly encourage a Polarizing Lens Filter if you select this camera. If you have more money, I would actually suggest getting the "A129 Duo IR Front and Interior Dual Dash Cam 5GHz Wi-Fi GPS Full HD 1080P GPS Buffered Parking Mode for Uber Lyft Taxi" as it includes infrared which is ideal for nighttime driving -
Easy with the right stuff.

If you search my comment history I give a complete walk through on how to install the setup. The hard wire kit has the wires labeled backwards, yellow is battery, red is accessory. Took me about 1.5 hours to install everything and you would never know I have a front/rear dash cam setup.
here’s a link to a cheap one i have and it works great! all you need to do it buy an sd card for it but those are also super cheap. it’s very much worth it if you ask me :)

Amazon. You can a decently functioning one for around $30. Check this link. The better option is probably to just ask people in this sub who post really nice footage what they use and check those out.
Man that's a lot to unpack. There's a ton to learn and the school of hard knocks is the toughest one.
As u/Ralliartimus noted, wear the gear. That's boots, overpants, jacket with spine protector, gloves, full-face helmet. All the gear, all the time.
Generally speaking, drivers are nowhere near as aware of you as you might think they should be. Be very aware of this, particularly in places where someone can turn in front of you (approaching intersections, driveways, etc.) No gear will protect you going from 45 to zero in a few feet.
Not sure what bike you're getting and it sounds like you're committed already, but I'd advise getting an older bike without a lot of fairings. You are going to tip over. Guarantee it. Learning and tipping a cheap, older, lower powered bike is definitely the way to go.
Keep the stock exhaust. Virtually no one likes listening to a loud pipe and, if we're being honest, they're hard on the rider as well. Speaking of, include ear plugs with your gear. Tinnitus really, really sucks.
Take every rider training class you can. Read Proficient Motorcycling and other books about riding. If there are off-road riding classes around you, take them. It's a different kind of riding and you can learn things that apply to your road skill set. A lot of professional riders got their start off-road.
There's paragraphs and paragraphs more, but that's off the cuff.
Good luck!
Ya well a few people mentioned I was a bit of an asshole with the horn and I'm willing to agree to that tune. I think even a short blast would have gotten a brake check but who knows. It's in the past. Someone replied to me in this post after I asked them what their recommendation was for a new camera. This is it.
I highly recommend the Auto-Vox V5 Pro it's expensive at $300 but acts as backup cam, dual dash cam, rear view mirror, GPS monitoring, records if you're hit while parked, etc,.
I also like the Thinkware x700 which is $50 cheaper and has amazing safety features like lane departure & also gives you speed cam & red light warnings. Similar to the previous but doesn't replace your rearview mirror so is more unsightly lmao
