That looks like a space for an electronic air filter; I have one. You don't put paper filters in there (thought they CAN have a paper pre-filter). This is what they look like and slide into that space.

Protip: Shower arm extensions are a thing and are easy to install. Combine with a rain head for best effect so that showers can actually be relaxing.
