I think Český Ráj is pretty good, it has a big hiking space with lots of things to see (including several castles).
ps: you probably have it but just in case, I wanted to let you know that for hiking mapy.cz is your friend.
You can look on https://en.mapy.cz/, it has the parking zone colours marked as lines along the sides of the roads. Blue is residents only, purple is mixed residents and paying customers, orange is paying customers only
Jesus stop spamming with these crappy Prisma photos anyone can do on mobile with one tap
I know it's exciting to discover app which was new like 2 or more years ago, but it's kinda cringy you don't realize it
Are you daft? Or why are you asking this in this subreddit? How is the unknown airline cabin bag allowance relevant to Prague?
This obviously depends on the airline, and if you can clearly see the baggage allowance when buying a flight ticket. Typically, the size limit is something like 55x35x20 cm and weight limit 7-8 kg. 50l bag will probably be too big - some airlines tolerate it, some make you check it & pay extra.
But honestly, if you need this much assistance to even get a simple flight ticket, don't bother coming. You will be scammed or ripped of within an hour.
I don't think I know a person who had any issue with just downloading from torrents. I read posts about people getting into trouble for uploading archives of movies to upload sites ( with their premium plans.
1) Prague is a city. Unless you are being technical with administrative borders, there are no fields in a city (duh). If by poppy you mean Papaver somniferum, yes, that is one of common crops here, but you would have to travel to the countryside.
2) It is August... the best thing you could maybe see is the ripe crop and I am not sure whether the harvest will not already have been done.
Im from the US but live here and never exchange money. Might be worth checking your banks foreign transaction fee. If I need cash from my US account I’ll usually just pull out a big amount from an ATM at once. Withdraw and select “without conversion” then your bank will figure out the rate and hit you with one fee per withdrawal. Might be worth checking an actual bank when you get here and see if they do exchanges vs a currency exchange place.
https://www.xe.com/currencyconverter/
Is usually pretty accurate for exchange rates as far as I know
I don't know about the best, but my favourite for sure are Chlebicky Letna at the intersection of Milady Horakove and Kamenicka
Affordable = on the street. However, there are "blue zones" in many districts (districts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 13, 16, 22), meaning that you have to be a resident to park there. Not sure what the requirements would be for you as a foreigner. Oh, and every district has it's "own blue zone", so e.g. if you get a parking permit for district 2, you still cannot park in district 4.
If you want more help, you need to provide approximate location where you want to park. This website http://www.parkujvklidu.cz/prague-parking/ should also provide some information. Or you can check https://en.mapy.cz/ and if you zoom-in close enough on the street, you might see blue lines on the sides - that means that there is a blue zone (no lines -> no blue zone, but it doesn't necessarily mean it's allowed to park there).
My advice is don't come to Prague with a car. If you are a student, you won't need it. Getting around Prague in a car is nonsense + parking is really difficult, and for the out-of-Prague trips you can use trains and buses (they are cheap, safe and mostly convenient).
And what did you exactly found offencive in this? You want police to come for every guys peeing outdoors? You either have a police state or people sometimes do a nasty things and going unpunished for this. Choose the one. Freedome comes with personal responsibilities and also the ability to tolerate others even when those others are quite annoing people. Actually, a lot of Czech are really good at seeing the border with your personal borders. But they can pee outside, yes.
And what is the problem with people having sex in public? Ok, they have it, just pass it. What is the actual problem? I don't like people in red pants. Even though it is natural for some people to wear red pants in public.
By the way, have you visited any public saunas here? It is actually quite opening experience for someone out from Europe.
Unfortunately, no subreddit wiki, sidebar, sticky posts or other nice features... Our only mod is extremly inactive, yet refuses to nominate other mods and does just the minimal activity required not to be stripped off his moderating privileges by the reddit staff :-( .
If the app doesen't work, there is a ticket machine accepting NFC contactless cards (including Apple Pay/Google Pay) at Anděl here: https://en.mapy.cz/s/3e5sY, you'll pass it if you follow the tram tracks from Na Knížecí (the bus stop near Anděl) to the stop where tram no. 9 stops.
Start in Nadrazi Branik (southern part of Prague) and run to Karlstejn (through Slivenec, Maskuv mlyn, Kuliva hora, Vonoklasy, Karlik, Morinka). Slightly under 30 km, elevation over 500 m. Most of it is tourist trails or dirt roads. Then just take the train back, it's fast, cheap and goes often.
Also, I suggest you use mapy.cz for planning runs like this. They have awesome outdoor layer that Google Maps don't have and you can download maps and routes for offline use in their app easily.
PS: Take enough water with you, last time I ran out of water and there is nowhere to refill.
If you want an authentic Czech meal, try U Rudlofina , it is in Prague 1. The menu is in Czech but I just read that they have an English menu out front. It is a bit smokey in the eating area, but the food makes to it totally worth it! I recommend the Kureci Steak, it is chicken with potatoes on it and cheese melted on top....amazing. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g274707-d1091108-Reviews-Restaurace_U_Rudolfina-Prague_Bohemia.html Enjoy!
If you are looking for some amazing Thai food, try Maly Buddha. It is right near the castle! It is amazing and an extremely cool ambiance. Their pad thai is amazing, but is not on the menu! Go there, its delicious! http://www.malybuddha.cz/
Even airbnb? I do not know what you mean by "residences and temporal places" like hostels? Standard rent cannot forbid you from having a pet (but ofc they can just rent to someone else citing another reason).
Just putting in Prague, August and Pets allowed on airbnb gives bunch of options https://www.airbnb.com/s/Prague--Czechia/homes?allow_override%5B%5D=&checkin=2017-08-01&checkout=2017-08-31&hosting_amenities%5B%5D=12&s_tag=gvWHZJ70
What about a shelter/pet hotel for the time being?
Go to https://en.mapy.cz and zoom in to the maximum level. Both sides of each street are lined with the color of the relevant parking zone. Clicking the zone provides additional info.
If there are no colored lines, it means either there are no parking places or the zonal system does not apply (verify on aerial map or the "Panorama" feature (equals Streetview)).
I usually stay around center and live in vinohrady so it's not an issue for me but a friend of mine regularly takes uber to Beroun and that's like 20km outside of Prague. Worst case call a taxi, I have good experience with nejlevnejsi taxi, they have an app so you don't have to deal with operators. But I'd try uber first.
I stayed at the Czech Inn. I liked it a lot. It gets a lot of tourists from around the world (though mainly US, Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand). The rooms are nice and pretty cheap, and there's a good bar in the basement which is great for meeting people.
The only downside is that it's fairly far from Old Town, but it's right next to a tram stop and a few blocks from a metro.
Here's the tripadvisor page for it: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g274707-d618230-Reviews-Czech_Inn-Prague_Bohemia.html

Public transport (see Google Maps)
I'm surprised that people struggle to find it, but I can tell you 100% that Delta operates a daily direct flight to Prague from JFK. It isn't crazy expensive, secret, or anything - it's a normal flight. (The same flight is marketed by KLM, Air France, CSA, but it's all the same 767 operated by Delta, and I'd recommend booking with them directly.)
A tip: round trips are almost always CHEAPER than one way. For example, the Delta flight in coach is about $1000 today for a roundtrip, but about $2000 for a one way ticket.
Erm...
Kayak, Kiwi and all of these websites just sell what they want. In no way do they provide flight schedules, they just sell tickets for most flights at prices they continuously update and modify according to demand.
The way to search flight schedules is https://matrix.itasoftware.com/ These guys do not sell tickets. They just search the flight schedules, and provide prices they find (probably some default airline pricing). But you can't buy the ticket for that price from them - they will provide a series of codes you should provide to a travel agent at a ticket sales company (or a ticket agent of one of the airlines operating the flights) to construct your fare and tell you what price it's actually selling at. It's not a good way to get a cheap ticket, but it's a good way of finding out what flights actually exist.
They were bought by Google and "Google Flights" uses their engine, so you can also use that, but GF also sells tickets (through referrals) so they also might be filtering the results somewhat, not sure about that.
In response to your original question, noone flies direct to the US year-round. There is a "seasonal" = May through ~September? flight from Philly to Prague operated by American and codeshared by Finnair and British Airways, and another one from JFK operated by Delta and codeshared by Air France and Czech Airlines. As far as I know those are your only non-stop options USA->Czech republic.
Others in the thread have suggested sensible options as well - fly to Vienna (or Munich, or less conveniently but possibly cheaper to Warsaw) and then get to Prague. If your cats need a break just get a hotel in that city and travel the next day. AFAIK All of these cities have airline connections to PRG multiple times a day, roughly an hour long flight). Or take a bus or train (Vienna is best for trains, Warsaw and Munich I'd look for buses).
At some recycling points lots of examples here on Mapy, there are big red boxes for recycling electronics & batteries - like the one shown on the far right in this picture at the recycling point next to Dejvická station.
I tried to get Mapy to show only recycling points which contained those electronic recycling facilities, but couldn't manage it. Maybe some smarter than me/or familiar with the website will be able to do it.
As far as donating the electronics, I'm really not sure. But I hope this helped.
I once got absolutely shit-faced on that stuff in U Kruhu, at Palackého 6 (not far from Wenceslas Square)
Use Kiwi.com to search for flights, though it's usually a little bit cheaper to book it directly with the airline. https://www.kiwi.com/en/search/united-states/czechia/anytime/no-return?stopNumber=0
I have "Moje Praha" - not sure if it is in English though. It has parking, some offices and couple other "locators'... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cz.eman.imes&hl=en_US&gl=US cheers
I ran iDOS and PubTran side by side for about a year. iDOS was faster, more accurate, more featureful and just better all round. PubTran looked better but actually gave me bad results once or twice, which is unacceptable. Sorry I can't be more detailed but this was maybe three years ago and all I can remember was that there was one incident where PubTran really pissed me off. Of course, it may have improved considerably since then...
Well, that's the easiest scenario then. I‘ve had good experience using Mullvad (albeit running on my router), connecting to Germany. They have a macOS client, which you need to install. There‘s also a guide on how to set it up. Subscription model is pretty uncomplicated, too.
I believe streaming services blacklist known public VPN IP's so even if you find one now that fools them, they might update in the future and block it.
The best thing you could do is have a friend in the country you want to connect to host a VPN for you but that requires some technical knowledge and a static IP.
I personally use ExpressVPN but netflix does sometimes block me.
I use Private Internet Access which has several options for streaming. There are lots of countries if you just want to appear differently but you can connect to ones which are "streaming optimised". I've only used that for UK content but there are US options too.

(note: if you sign up with that link I'll get a free month :-) )
I did your homework for you: https://www.amazon.com/3M-Indoor-Window-Insulator-5-Window/dp/B00002NCJI
But in exchange, I want you to tell me if this stuff actually does something?
Its an efficient new building with double glazed windows, I didn't have to do anything myself. However in older apartments that I lived in we used insulation strips like these https://www.amazon.com/fowong-White-Foam-Tape-Adhesive/dp/B083XD44YR/ref=sr_1_13?keywords=Window+Weatherstrip&qid=1662380088&sr=8-13 to stick on the window frame which give the windows a better seal. You can buy then in Baumax/Obi quite cheaply.
About public transport:
- Use your wireless bank card in Ostrava public transport, just put it on the scanner in the vehicle and wait for green. If you exceed day ticket price it will charge just for one day ticket. If you want multiple days ticket you need to buy one somewhere else.
- Use Muj Vlak app from Ceske Drahy for trains. You can check schedule and directly buy a ticket. Usually tickets can be returned 15 min before train regular scheduled departure for free. (There are other companies for trains Ostrava-Praha: RegioJet and LeoExpress)
- Good to have is app NaVlak (probably just for Android, not sure) which shows translations departures tables on your phone as you would see them on the translation: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.circlegate.tt.navlak.android&hl=en&gl=US
Get the PID lítačka app so you don't have to find places to buy tickets. Android https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cz.dpp.praguepublictransport
Have a great trip. You can also bookmark everything in Maps
Get the Litacka mobile app and handle your tickets there, it is the easiest. iOS Android.
You cannot validate a ticket twice with it, which is a common mistake. Plus for most people losing their smartphone is harder than losing the piece of paper that is the ticket.
And about the second question, the ticket prevents you getting fined by using the public transport during the time it lasts, meaning you can take any combination of public transport in any direction as many times as you want (within the time limit). And again, only validate once (Easier in the app).
Some of them work pretty ok especially to get rid of the limescale which water here has a lot. I had success with this one. Helped my hair and scalp.
Nope.
Here's another view of those two separate buildings - yellow building and one with spire.
Here's Google Maps street view of approximately where the picture was taken.
The yellow building in the foreground has a cafe in the ground floor. I'm not sure what's in the rest of the two buildings but neither are a church.
I use Wise & like it. You can transfer money from your USA bank almost instantly like a debit card for no fee. Plus, you can hold it in a Wise account in USD until you want to exchange it at a better rate in CZK.
Here is a USD to CZK chart measured at currency changes over five years. The CZK has bounced from a high around 1USD=26CZK to a low around 1USD=20CZK. So, if you exchange $1000USD at 26CZK, that gives you 26,000CZK; and $1000USD at 20CZK, that gives you only 20,000CZK. That's a delta of 6000CZK. The fluctuation in CZK in the past month is a bounce of around CZK 22-CZK 23. Even so, if you exchanged at 23CZK instead of 22CZK, that's an extra 1000CZK in your pocket.
You can also receive payments in multiple currencies into a Wise account. So, if you're a teacher who's got a student in Germany paying in Euro's, no problem receiving Euro's, which you can convert into CZK.
I use Wise as an intermediary bank and exchange currency when CZK spikes and do this at around $1000USD at a time. This helps me get a better exchange rate and pretty much eliminates any losses related to currency exchange. You can also send, receive, and hold funds in multiple currencies within your Wise account. And you can even use their Debit card to withdraw, or exchange and withdraw, funds in multiple currencies.
There are tons of companies that send/receive money. This one works for me. Hope you can game things to get a better exchange rate for yourself!
What I personally do is use wise.com to send money from my US account to my CSOB. You will 100% want a czech account as many many things here are payable only by bank transfer. The banks work very well (waaaaay better than us banks).
I was literally going to ask the same question!
Try the stairs between Holečkova and Mošnova https://www.openstreetmap.org/search?query=50.0716681N%2C%2014.3840006E#map=19/50.07183/14.38408 are quite big!
As of now, vaccination is open to teachers, people with chronic health conditions via their general practitioners, and people over the age of 65. You can use this calculator to get an idea of when you’ll be vaccinated. https://www.omnicalculator.com/health/fronty-vakcinu-ceska-republica?fbclid=IwAR3TepmGhryVIjTrgd1LExOAf0om2zlkSWYvwFp_o_yoMUnVky6VLSjPkTc
Fio is decent, as is CSOB.
You will get raked on fees and exchange rates though with all banks.
You might look into wise.com for making transfers as you'll get a way better rate and no wire fee.
Wise - It’s my only choice for international transfers. I’ve got a referral invite if you use it to sign up you’ll get your first transfer fee-free (up to a certain amount I think): https://wise.com/invite/i/niallh2
this advice was considered with context of e.g this place: https://en.mapy.cz/zakladni?x=14.4142602&y=50.0688754&z=20&base=ophoto - there is single lane, from right side there is sidewalk, and from left side there are tram rails, but behind kind of curb - there I tend to get decent speed and go in the middle of the lane.
> Cars already pass inches from me
where? Some two-lane road?
Testing is for everybody. Here are all the testing sites listed: https://en.mapy.cz/zakladni?x=14.5104000&y=50.0765000&z=11&q=covid
Use Chrome, it can translate any site. Use a telephone, just ask if they speak english 💡
You, as a non-resident, can't long-term park in most of Prague - the blue zones are not only in P1 and P2, but in most districts. Short-term (apx. 2 hours) parking is possible, you need to pay around 20-40 CZK / hour, depending on the location and district. But finding a parking space large enough for a van might be problematic (also some streets are quite narrow). Some zones allow for free parking on weekends etc. - https://en.mapy.cz/ if you zoom close enough, you will see streets with colored lines along them (zones) - if you click on them, there is an extra info about blue zone in that street (price, free hours etc.).
Your only options for long-term parking are to either park in a private parking lot / garage or leave the car somewhere in the suburbs where there are no blue zones.
I just glimpsed over KAM pages and schedule and I can't say if the system is same as in my days, so take my info with grain of salt and always pay attention to info you receive from KAM.

If you do not have yet a block and room number you may be asked to choose one later once their system is online (again, we used to do this, I'm not sure if it is still the case). In that case you may have option to choose from 3 blocks with NW/SE orientation.
NW oriented rooms look over quite a busy street during the day, quieter during the night.
SE oriented rooms look over monastery, cemetery, race track and parking lot - arguably quieter in average except when people are returning home in the evening/morning and when there is any event in the nearby race track - in that case it is loud as hell.

See yourself in the map: https://en.mapy.cz/s/3sDFq
Yay. Be careful (beware of slipery slopes) an you will enjoy it :)

Děčín is quite good choice to stay (it is close and big enough), if you wanna be there for more days. You can try to find something in Jetřichovice or Hřensko which are closer, but selection of places to stay will be smaller.
Places to visit: Pravčická brána is a must. Othervise is really good just wander through rock labirints (look at en.mapy.cz - tourist view and go for stroll using marking system - it is reliable and very well done)
Děčínský sněžník is nice option to go for hike (outside of Bohemian Switzerland NP but in protected area Elbe Sandstones).

Last year I went on the Kelby photowalk in Prague and met some really great people. If you're in town for the one this year, I'd suggest it.
http://kelbyone.com/photowalk/walk/prague-hlavni-mesto-praha-czech-republic/
Very poor internet provider? Where do you live? CZ has the 13th best mobile internet, and 48th best fixed connection in the world ( https://www.speedtest.net/global-index/czech-republic ). UPC is blazing fast and totally cheap. I have 500 Mb/s ...
Whoa...I always thought about trying Nord but 24 hours is bananas. Gotta plug ExpressVPN here--been using them for 7 years and anytime and endpoint crashes they have me on a new, working one within about 10 minutes every time.
Amazon UK is where I buy specialty food items that I can't get from The Candy Store. Last year they even had Jiffy cornbread mix which I made with thanksgiving dinner.
you can disable having to listen back to yourself in the settings of the android app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.commonvoice.saverio
Mall.cz or Alza.cz are our shitty versions of Amazon. Aukro.cz is our shitty version of eBay.
Both Amazon and Ebay works in CZ very well. no real reason to use our shitty versions (only if you insist in Czech specific 2 years warranty)
For example, couple monthes ago we buy this robotic cleaner from Amazon.de for 449 EUR and free shipping which was something like 12200 CZK with EUR/CZK exchange rate back then. exact same thing here for at least 16000
Also download an app called " Smart Guide"
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.smart_guide.smartguide.T_00007
It has a free guided tour of the city of Terezín. The guided tour included in the ticket only covers the actual concentration camp.
The city was named Terezín after Empress Maria Teresa of Austria.
Thank you for verifying that! It's that few of my friends are not fond of walking long distances (our hotel is at Praha 4) plus getting the ticket is more for convenience, so that we can freely use the public transportation whenever we feel like. But I also agree with your point because I personally love to walk :)
One last question, I assume buying tickets through PID app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cz.dpp.praguepublictransport&hl=CS) is the most recommended and safe right?
No worries. I've thought of a few other things that might help:
Download the IDOS app. It lets you enter any two places in Prague and gives a detailed rundown of how to get from one to the other using whichever combination of bus/tram/metro is fastest. Extra useful if (like me) you can never remember which number of bus/tram goes where. Mapy.cz is another good app, you can download a map of Prague so if you're ever offline you still know where you are.
Ask if there are corporate perks associated with your job. Certain banks/phone carriers/services might have a deal with your employer to give you a cheaper rate on various products. You can get a "premium" bank account which usually costs 150CZK/month for free, stuff like that.
For plates/clothes horses/cutlery/bedding/kettle/oven gloves, etc., there is a big IKEA at both the Zlicin and Cerny Most ends of the metro yellow line. There's also a big Tesco department store at Narodni Trida in the city centre, which is where I went. As an aside, all of the useful stuff I just mentioned is on the top floor at Tesco, and it's not immediately obvious how to get there: the main escalators only go to the third floor (kids' stuff and toys) and the escalator to the fourth floor is elsewhere on this floor, away from the main escalators. I have no idea why, and - unlike the rest of the store, which is easy to navigate - it's not well-signposted either. I spent far too long looking at Paw Patrol backpacks trying to figure out where all the bedding was. Not fun.
Also, as u/iLoveLights said, don't sell yourself short. I'm able to live quite comfortably on ~44k/month (~33k after tax), but if you can make more, go for it!
I'll see if I can think of anything else which might be useful, but I don't think I've missed anything big.
If your friend has a kindle, smartphone or tablet, then a nice little extra would be a good phrasebook. The one that I have is perfect and it's just a few euros - this one. It's definitely a perfect book to start with, to learn pronunciation, shopping vocab, directions etc.
Or, to get more in depth with the language... this book goes into detail about the grammar of the language.
Or you can make it even easier than that and do it via your mobile:
