It will hit universities and students hard, and Syracuse is a college town.
Students will no longer be able to deduct student loan interest, and they will now have to pay taxes on any remitted or awarded credits as if the money for those credits were income.
This is basically going to kill the income of every graduate student studying anywhere in the USA.
There are plenty of other cuts to deductions that, added together, will exceed the increased deduction for a lot of low and middle-income families.
I get that living in a community after you snitch can be difficult. At least help point police in the right direction.
We have an active kayak group on Meetup.com and go out twice a week during the season. It's a fun and casual group, we are not fast or anything. There's also CNY Kayak, but they are pretty hardcore (I've been seriously kayaking for years and have a hard time keeping up, personally not really my style) and Kayak Anglers of Syracuse if you fish (a super fun group).
I'm new to CNY and when I hear people complaining about it, it's usually because they can't see past their own boredom. Jump on facebook, look on this sub, get involved with your surroundings. Use meetup.com. There are so many different things to do here. Take a leap of faith and try something new.
I for one this weekend will be at Blues Fest, and potentially checking out the new art installation in Armory Square and then spending my Sunday finding a new mountain to climb or a new waterfall to explore!
They'll mail them to you for free, but that won't happen in two days.
Amazon sells them: https://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Holder-Mounting-3M-Fasteners/dp/B007BH5848/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1473861514&sr=8-4&keywords=Ez+pass+Velcro
Are you trying to find someone to travel to 8th lake? It's almost 3 hours away...
FYI, if you want to write down information that will actually stick around, reddit posts are temporary, this post will be lost in 2 weeks max. Try putting your $0.02 into a wiki like this one: http://wikitravel.org/en/Syracuse_(New_York)
Y94FM has a decent traffic section (http://y94fm.iheart.com/cc-common/traffic/index.html)
I also check Waze to see if there are any slow downs / heavy traffic reports on my route. If you go through the live map you don't have to log in (https://www.waze.com/livemap)
How locally? Chimney Mountain is another one that comes to mind. There are caves at the top, but if you're looking for Howe Caverns, you might call them holes.
https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/new-york/chimney-mountain-trail
Wow - did you move from San Antonio Texas to Upstate/Central NY? Jesus - what a horrible move. Who did you piss off.
Anyway - yes, your idea of looking for grad students is an okay one. SU does have a fairly good grad school. That being said, coming from San Antonio and moving to anywhere CNY is a huge, huge culture shock. Go on Match.com and "be awakened" by the difference.
If your commute is very infrequent, I suggest you move to Ithaca. It's about an hour and 40 minutes though and that's a nightmare commute but you could just stay at a local hotel up on base for those days. But it looks like you are in office 3 days a week. That destroys the idea of Ithaca.
With all things Covid, I would NOT find roommates. I would live alone. At least for a year. I'd also consider renting some place outside of the city but close enough to uber this way you can head into town for a date or for drinks then uber home.
That being said, you aren't going out drinking in bars anyway until mid spring/summer next year. And by that point, you'll be looking for bridges to jump off or trains to walk in front of.
Last question - did you get security clearance? If so, just do your time for another year and then high tail it down to Washington DC / Beltway or up and over to Boston. Those are the places to work in your 20's making bank. Seriously - just do your time here, save your money, save your money, save your money then the first chance - GET OUT OF HERE. SAVE YOURSELF.
You don't want to move to Tipp Hill. You are on the west side and you want to be on the east side. Plus it's lower income and dumpy. Find a nice place with a pool and some amenities. Maybe out in FM or JD. You'll have older neighbors and that's okay.
That's okay because YOU DON'T WANT TO LIVE HERE. Rome is to Syracuse what a six-pack is to a case.
Good luck with your decision.
Not much activity there either, but we're expecting ~10-14 people. I know I'm going to be there, but I can't vouch for others obviously.
There is (or was) a board game meetup every Saturday afternoon at The Wegman's in Fairmount (upstairs where all the seating is). I attended several times and always had a good time. For years I had wanted to play Settlers of Catan and the group was nice enough to oblige. They usually have an event organized via meetup.com.
I didn't realize this before but there is actually a ton of geocaching in syracuse. Check it out:
EDIT: Good luck on the south side, those should all be the highest difficulty rating.
To listen requires a Facebook "Like". Nothing personal, but I'm not going to "Like" something if I haven't heard it, and I don't have a Facebook account.
Sorry, but you're limiting your audience; may I suggest http://soundcloud.com/ and http://bandcamp.com/ as an alternative?
I've had Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile. All work fine in Syracuse, and are spotty as you get further into rural areas/Adirondacks. Verizon tends to have better coverage in those areas, but it can still be a crapshoot. Check out Open Signal, which will give you a better idea of the actual coverage from the different providers.
This is just a suggestion: Join Nextdoor.com, it is neighborhood-specific, and from my experience yields a lot more good recommendations (and has a search function so you can see other posts looking for the same thing you are). Good luck!
Have you invested yet in a higher speed internet subscription? I have an excellent home router mesh system and I am getting very high speeds over wireless (389 MBPS) on a Spectrum 400 MBPS plan.
This is my mesh router: https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Whole-Tri-Band-System-RBK852/dp/B07WNY2WKG?th=1
I doubt wired connection would provide faster speeds, if much. and we have a ton of IOT devices in my 3000 sqft home.
Not sure on an installer but can't you use your power outlets to run internet through the existing electric wiring? Could be a much cheaper option for you.
Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-Powerline-Pass-Through-TL-PA9020P-KIT/dp/B01H74VKZU/
I've been using these and throwing away the kill part whenever we catch one. It's expensive but better than having to touch the mice and it seems to kill them effectively with no danger to my dogs. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B083N68XM2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1
Put these under your sink, in your cabinets, wherever they are leaving droppings: https://www.amazon.com/Tomcat-Press-Mouse-Trap-2-Pack/dp/B00N6XKVNY
The traps are very sensitive so I load them up with peanut butter and they’ve caught two at a time for me before. It’s disgusting to have to get rid of the small bodies but this trap makes it easier to grab at the end so you never have to touch the mice or anything. I still wear gloves when disposing of them because it’s just gross when they splatter on the trap.
I rented a house that had a huge mice problem, had my landlord hire an exterminator but that never got rid of them. These traps were the best way to tackle the problem.
Parka. I wear an alpha industries parka and it's the best.
I paid 150$ for mine

you are going to spend more for a repair than it would cost to just buy a replacement.. That is of course, if you can find a shop who will even want to do the work. I would suggest just getting another one for $26

Louisiana Supreme Hot Sauce has a wing sauce variety - https://www.dollartree.com/Louisiana-Supreme-Original-Chicken-Wing-Sauce-17-oz-Bottles/p321041/index.pro
"Louisiana" sauce also makes one: https://www.walmart.com/ip/The-Original-Louisiana-Wing-Sauce-12-fl-oz/53952987
I've seen both sauces at places like Costco/BJs, maybe that's what they're using?
When and if you do find one, may I recommend this product? It will completely recondition the oldest most tired looking leather. It really does magic and is the "sekret" ingredient most leather reconditioners use!
Here's a great book, which focuses on recipes that will help you meet you goals. My trainer recommended it. There's sections for meal ideas if you're working out and also meal ideas is you are not working out, which are less carbs (aka sugar).

I had a pressure test scheduled for my homes efficiency and they found asbestos wrap on my HVAC ducts. They wouldn't do the test until it was either removed or covered over. They advised me to purchase a product like this: https://www.amazon.com/Mastic-Air-Duct-Sealant-gallon/dp/B016385K4S and cover over it. I wore a mask and used rubber gloves to apply it. No brush needed, use your hands! The product worked so good, I did all the seems in my ventilation duct-work to improve efficiency.
For potty training I highly suggest buying some bells for your door.
https://www.chewy.com/caldwells-potty-bells-original-dog/dp/133180
Physically take the paw of your dog in your hand and gently hit the bell 1-2x before taking them out. Do it every single time and eventually your dog will start letting you know when they need to go. Works wonders and cost like $10.
Just a quick search:

Looks like it'll work on GSM networks. So for this area that would be AT&T. It also looks like the sim card you may have not may not work at full speed and the other factor is 3G is being killed off here in spring of this year so you'd need to get a 4G sim card from AT&T and port your number to AT&T.
So is this serial only available during Halloween? I thought it was a year around thing? Never had that type of cereal before only eat corn flakes (yeah I know I'm a square).
You can buy boxes of the brand off of ebay. May buy a box base on your recommendation.
Edit: Actually I just remembered https://www.alltrails.com/us/new-york/syracuse which gives info on places to hike/walk, with reviews. I popped in and saw a lot of the places being recommended are listed, this should be great info for you!
-------------------
Did you try the side by the fairgrounds? There is a trail on the other side of the lake also. I personally have not been out so I did not even realize the parks were crowded, that doesn't seem like a good idea.
It depends how far you like to drive also and where you live. Others have suggested some places like Clarks Reservation in Jamesville, which is like just couple minutes outside the city. Green Lakes which is beautiful and has lot of trails, but it could possibly be crowded because it is such a local favorite, you could possibly call and ask or check some social media for Green Lakes info. Clarks Reservation is amazing it is a Glacial Lake also like Green Lakes, research it.
There is a place in Camilus, called the Camillus Forest Unique Area. I recommend this because it is just a very rustic trail that doesnt get as much attention as the other places. Normally when I have been there I don't see one other person or car, but sometimes I will see 1-2 people at most the whole time. Down the road from the Camilus Forest Unique Area is also the Erie Canal path, it is only about 1 mile or so. You could scout it out also for traffic.
In summer, hike at Chimney Bluffs, an hour NW from SYR on Lake Ontario. You can jump in the lake when you get hot.

Here is a bunch of different kinds of traps and you can read their reviews. https://www.walmart.com/c/kp/mouse-traps
The secret to using any trap is know where to place them. Mice do not have great eyesight so they run against the walls.
I personally had good success with the Victor Pest Quick Set Mouse Trap. Easy to set and easy to dispose of the dead mouse.
You're welcome. Hold on your San Francisco card, I'm guessing their electronic collections are better than ours.
I also use http://www.worldcat.org to find out if things are in our library system.
Welcome to CNY.
As someone who recently graduated college and now works in downtown Syracuse, I also weighed the options of buying a house vs. renting. At first buying seemed like a good option for my boyfriend and myself, specifically something that needed fixing up as we are both fairly knowledgable when it comes to renovating - figuring we could buy low and sell higher later. However after thinking more about it, I wasn't sure I wanted something so "permanent" this early in our lives and we decided to rent.
A house is a big endeavor: mortgage, taxes, utilities, etc. If something big happens like the water heater needs to be replaced or you find the roof is leaking into your living room, those fixes will be a pretty penny and something you might not have factored in.
And while it is what they call a "buyer's market" right now, it might be harder to sell a few years down the road if after you graduate you decide you don't want to stay in Syracuse anymore, where at that point a house might feel more like a ball and chain. An apartment offers more freedom in the sense that once your lease is up, you can decide to stay or go with ease, and it's also nice not having to worry about fixing something if it breaks. Some people see it as throwing money away each month (which is why I initially liked the idea of a house) but I like the tradeoffs it will give me at this stage of the game.
As other people have said, if you do look into buying - you are not going to find a house that cheap in a "nice" neighborhood, unfortunately. If you look into renting, unless you want to be near SU, I would suggest looking into apartments in the downtown/Armory Square area. There are great bars, restaurants, and shopping, and in my opinion one of the safer/safest parts of the city. This document is extremely helpful and will show you an abundance of housing options around the city.
Good luck!
Cafe Kubal has an absolutely awesome breakfast sandwich.
Heritage Cafe isn't too bad either.

Split Rock had some pretty fun trails the last I was there (9 years ago), definitely check out Lost Lake and the Rock Crusher if you end up there. Pretty cool stuff and a part of the area's history.
http://wikimapia.org/3716230/Rock-Crusher
Disclaimer: Proceed with caution, I heard they've been cracking down on riders there, but that may have changed.
Edit: There's also a Polaris App that shows you all the snowmobile trails in the area which are usually atv trails when there's no snow.
I ain't gonna lie, nobody is saying the hard truth in here it's probably the kid. Go on match.com . It's a pay to play site so you know the people are serious not just seeing how many e-swipes right they can get. I won't wish you luck because luck is for losers, just get on there and get it!
Honestly, I'd do it yourself. If you don't have one, pick up an 8 mm camcorder on ebay (they surprisingly sell for more than you'd think, but should be able to score one for $50-$60), and a USB video capture card (Amazon has a ton of options starting at ~$12, for example https://www.amazon.com/REDGO-Video-Capture-Converter-Adapter/dp/B01E5ITE2W/). You have to record the videos to your computer in real-time (so it takes some time to transfer a lot), but it's cheap and quite easy.
Try one? Nah. Tell her to fully commit and get one at for her own thrown. $20 on Amazon. Worth it.
Amazon now offers assembly for an additional charge, but it looks like its over $100 to put together a bookcase.
I would reccomend a set of wire shelves. I just got this set from Amazon. Rated at 450lbs/shelf (probably closer to 200 though), they were dead simple to set up and came with free shipping.

I actually have a second hand one of these haha. I was mostly kidding, I don't care, but I happily hooked this up when I got it. That's not identical to mine but you get the idea.
I use a 6TB MyBookLiveDuo, using RAID 1, which is a two drive NAS (network attached storage) device, allowing for 100% of your data being copied over two drives, aka drive mirroring. So if one drive fails, you buy another and it rebuilds the raid/copy. There's a newer model called the MyCloud which is cheaper:

Buy a thermal gun and see if you have any heat leaks or poorly insulated spots. I know it's an apartment and you may not be able to fix much but at least you'll know if you're getting screwed over, so you can leave. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00837ZGRY/
Use this around outer walls, ceilings, it should all be very close to the room temp. Look for cold spots around the edges of windows and doors. If you find a leak, patch it, it'll save you money.
PS: when buying a thermal gun always check the distance ratio. This gun is 12:1 meaning for every 12" of distance, it's measuring a 1" spot, that's pretty good. Avoid bad ratios (like 1:1) like the plague.
From what I recall the older antennas aren't as good as the new ones designed for HD ota. I could be wrong lol.
I upgraded to one of these and the HD quality is very impressive. Its small and I just stick it to my window. The few glitchy channels I get are the weird pogo or whatever channels that I never watch.
