What you should keep in mind is how broad Reddit is. /r/pics has 28 million subscribers. /r/MurderedByWords has 2.6 million subscribers, and it's not a default.
Large subreddits have thousands of regular submitters, tens of thousands of occasional submitters, and millions of voters. These subreddits will filter for content that appeals to the masses, which you've referred to as mainstream. It's a natural byproduct of having so many people involved.
If you want to avoid that kind of content, you need to avoid the large subreddits. It's in the smaller subreddits that Reddit really shines, and it's in the smaller subreddits where genuine discussions really flourish. (Although even some larger subreddits like AskReddit can host some really interesting discussions, which is only possible thanks to the heirarchical comment system. I keep mentioning this system, because I really think it's what sets Reddit apart from any other social media website.)
And if you're still not happy, check out Tildes. It was designed to address some of your criticisms.
Well, what about when antifa advocates violence against republicans?
First, who is advocating violence? Antifa isn't an organization so you're talking about some people who advocate violence and also identify as antifa. They can't be held accountable because there is no membership card that can be taken away or leader that could do so, should it reflect on everyone else?
Second, I don't think all conservatives/republicans are fascists, but some definitely are. Who is being called a fascist? Are you sure they aren't? Almost all americans claim to be against fascism because of the nazis, but how many just hate the nazis specifically and would be ok with an american version of fascism? The US has historically supported authoritarian regimes The Nazis themselves took inspiration from Jim Crow laws. Was America fascist at any of these points? I don't know if every Trump supporter is a fascist, but besides neo-nazis who really hate Israel, fascists love him. John McCain and Mitt Romney didn't have that kind of support. Doesn't that mean something?
Also, antifa is mostly anarchists and communists. They hate Obama, Hillary and the Democrats too, so they don't really advocate violence against "anyone with a different opinion"
Let's take Mr Beast, who is the main subject of this thread, and look at his generosity. Because it was him I was thinking of when I said "hundreds of thousands a month" earlier
This vlog talks about how he more or less donated 1 mil as of June 2019, so let's say that number has increased to around 2.5 mil, considering his antics have been much more extravagant lately.
Plus, he just gave away 1 million flat, so let's bump that number to 3.5 million dollars just given away.
Let's use your 3% as basis. If we work backwards, 3.5mil/0.03 = 116 million dollars.
Idc who you are, YouTube is NOT that profitable.
At most you're seeing $1/1000 views, counting on all videos being monetized, so with his 4.5 billion views / 1000 that's only 4.5 Million dollars.
Even if his ratio was $3 / 1000, which is quite high, his new value is only 13.5 million. And lastly let's be very very generous and say his sponsors across all platforms gives him 6.5 mil in the time he was popular, making his value from 11 mil - 20 mil
(I'm almost certain hes a successful investor, but that's out of my own inference.)
Finally, let's say most of his revenue came from YouTube, and let's find the happy medium of 15.5 mil in his bank account.
3.5mil donated/15.5 mil earned = 22.5% of his earnings are just thrown away.
Obvious disclaimer: many of the numbers are ball parked, and arent likely to be 100% accurate, but if anything, they are higher than they should be, meaning the final percentage is likely higher.
TL:DR - Mr Beast is generous, lumping him with the clickbait youtubers who do give away a tiny fraction of their money is disingenuous
You can't say you're truly informed until you've read the entire 90 slide PowerPoint on the subject:
Freedome of speach shoudnt protect nazis and alt rights. Thos ideolegies are always against democracy. And thos ideas shoudnt be protected. Besides, stuff like reddit dosnt fall under that law, they can ban what they want.
PS: The US is hunting Whistleblowers so, mich for freedome of speach.
