Okay this is bullshit. Here's an article about it. Apparently he was caught with MDMA and "other stimulants."
So what did Walt Disney Japan do? They pulled the short from the upcoming Miyazaki bluray collection, stopped shipments of the Ghibli shorts collection, and said they won't be including the music video in the future.
And then:
> Universal Music announced on Monday that it is suspending shipments and recalling goods by Chage and Aska, as well as goods by Aska alone, following his arrest.
> Universal's contract with Chage and Aska had already ended, but individual contracts for the rights to sell and distribute goods remained. The company is terminating all related contracts, halting shipment and digital distribution on all music and video products, and recalling all possible CD and video products.
> The company apologized to fans and commented that, even though there is no doubt of Aska's merit as an artist, it made the decision as a company operating as a member of society.
Yes, how dare he want to alter his consciousness for his personal enjoyment? Let's remove everything he's ever done from circulation and salt the earth where his career was.
How disturbing, stupid, foolish, and asinine.
Here is an English movie script, see how it's written there. Or you could see if any of the film comics spell it out. Those would be the closest to an "offical" spelling, IMO, if you can track something down that way.
subtitles are probably going to vary because those are often fan-made or get translated by different groups of people.
Found one on Amazon.

If anyone remembers me from the Nausicaa goods post a week or so ago, this is the second part of the collection! I also got all of my friend's original theatrical release Laputa stuff in return for helping out! Hoorah! I think my favorite thing is the English language book. Kind of a "Let's learn English using Ghibli movies!" kind of thing. I wish I had access to this back when I was actually teaching English in Japan.
Hope you guys enjoy! Sorry some of the photos in the main gallery are crooked. I can't figure out how to rotate in imgbox. ( ̄▽ ̄);
P.S. Lots of people asked for a photo of the dive bar I helped clean up. It's closed up now because of my friend's mother's failing health. The whole family and I as well as some other friends all got together after it was cleaned up and drank the top shelf alcohol while the kids all sang karaoke and ran around like wild things. It was good times. Anyway, photo of the old Yamaguchi dive bar, or Japanese "snack bar," is in the gallery! <3
This is not the first time they released a box like this (meaning the content+design), so they might again in the future. The original price was $215 during pre-order.
The only official collection of Ghibli movies is the Hayao Miyazaki Blu-ray box from Amazon.
Anything else you find is an illegal bootleg.
An Isao Takahata Blu-ray box was released in Japan, but it has not been released in America.
PORGTORO!
Resistance looks like it might be cool, but I would kill for a Ghibli adaptation of Star Wars. Lap Pun Cheung's work is an interesting take on the idea, but I feel like something is missing from it; it doesn't look "Miyazaki enough".
> Yubaba is the same term used in the Edo period when bathhouses were commonplaces for sex work…
Yubaba is called Yubaba because she's the grandma who runs the bathhouse.
湯女 (yuna) is a woman who works in a bathhouse: 湯 (yu) means "bath" (in this context) and 女 (-na) simply means "young woman".
In several contexts 婆 (baba) means old woman: for example, 妖婆 (yuuba) means old hag or witch. Yubaba's name is 湯婆婆 which is pronunced ゆばーば (yu-baa-ba). ばーば (baaba) is kid talk for grandmother – something like the equivalent of "grandma".
I suppose if someone wanted to make up a term for "madame of the bathhouse" maybe they'd reach for 湯婆 but Googling around… there's no such thing. And the only results I can find for 湯婆婆 in ja.wikipedia.org are related to some cartoon called 千と千尋の神隠し whatever that is. ;)

It was pulled from the Japanese Miyazaki box set for that reason. It was made available as a free bonus disc with proof of purchase, but only while quantities lasted, and I imagine the print run has been exhausted by now. That distribution decision is probably the reason it ended up being omitted from the Amazon-exclusive US equivalent of the Miyazaki collection too. I'm not aware of any official (licensed) US home video distribution of this short.
I don't think it was pulled from any museum exhibits, though, and AFAIK it's never been shown as a short there.
They sell them on amazon as well in case you haven’t been able to find it yet

A Ghibli BD collection doesn't exist. Due to several companies owning the rights to individual films. The closest you'll get is The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki. https://www.amazon.com/Collected-Miyazaki-Amazon-Exclusive-Blu-ray/dp/B0117V8BX8
It has 10 of the 22 "Ghibli" films. No other English BD collection exists, if you see anything it's a bootleg.
You can always independently buy the BD of each film. Currently the Disney licensed ones are on sale at Costco for $18 each.
Though it's not a Studio Ghibli work officially as he is directing it for NHK. I thought it would be interesting to this sub.
Edit: English article on the subject http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2014-01-30/goro-miyazaki-to-direct-ronia-the-robber-daughter-tv-anime
>If there are Ghibli Freaks around here, they're not leaving their houses.
Perhaps because these films don't see widespread releases?
GKids didn't really have a widespread release at all for Marnie. and they didn't market it at all. They aren't a powerhouse distributor. Of course the film didn't crack $1,000,000.
I don't know about you all, but the nearest theater for me was 3 hours away - so that's a day trip, and it's not one I'm willing to make to see a movie.
Even when Disney carries Ghibli films, they don't always do it right. Arrietty was marketed like a "normal" Disney film, and it printed money. On the other end of things, take, say, The Wind Rises - Disney threw it on an obscure label, Touchstone, they did a little bit of marketing (I saw at least a few TV ads), and I ended up watching the film in my hometown - the theater may have been almost empty - but it was accessible, and it still pulled $5,000,000 from the USA. It was on enough screens that it could still do reasonably well. Not great, but far better than Marnie.
If you want a film to do well, you have to actually market it, and you need to get it on a lot of screens. Gkids cannot do that. Marnie was destined for failure in the US.
I found my theater here: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2015-05-02/gkids-releases-updated-theater-list-for-when-marnie-was-there/.87735
But I googled when Marnie was there tickets and it brought up the same options as well as Showtime's. It was nice because as the theater added more Showtime's it was updated there.
I always loved this theory, albeit makes the movie a tad darker. I just wish there were more perspectives like this for some of the other Ghibli movies. I know Spirited Away already has one but I'd love to see if anyone could come up with anything for Princess Mononoke or Nausicaa (can't see it happening for other movies like Kiki's Delivery Service of Whisper of the Heart though).
It's fake b/c Japan has never released a Miyazaki BD box set. Only America has, as an Amazon exclusive. And the back of the BD box is written in Chinese, not Japanese.
Did she buy it off that site Taobao? Like the other user said, Taobao is a Chinese eBay on steroids, most items aren't legit or "fell off the truck" if they're supposed to be "brand name". If she was looking for a Chinese release and bought it from Japan thinking it was reputable, it's still flagged as fake b/c Ghibli films are released by Walt Disney's Taiwan division and Disney's logo/ownership isn't shown anywhere on the box.
Also what are the 14 films? Even the Amazon release only has 11 (all his Ghibli ones + The Castle of Cagliostro). The Castle of Cagliostro has never been licensed for a previous legal release in China either; so its odd that they would get it just for this release. So what are the 3 other Miyazaki movies?
The best I could make out from the back is Whisper of the Heart (7th one down with yellow text) which Miyazaki did not direct. And the last two listed, I can't make out at all.

If she's into art at all, this is a fantastic buy, it's got lots of behind the scenes sketches, concepts, interviews with lots of people who worked on the film. I really like it personally, but that's because I'm into art, just a suggestion :)
Otherwise I'd recommend maybe looking into your local Pop Culture stores, seeing if they have any official merch floating around? Maybe get something imported from Japan from the Studio Ghibli themepark if possible? Also Etsy is a little hidden gem sometimes, it's not official merchandise, but you can get some neat things in there, like maybe some earrings that are shaped like the soot sprites? That'd be hella cute and you might be able to commission something like that too :D
Cheapest I've ever seen for them. CamelCamelCamel.com shows this is the lowest price for Totoro since it was added in Feb 2013. I assume the same for the others.

Well the one I use usually/in the past is just a default pastel where I messed with the sliders, and isn't that exciting--but lately, and in the Sophie one in particular I've been trying out these brushes and loving them!
Specifically the gouache, but they are all really impressive. There are a ton of free brushes out there that are great too, so I wouldn't recommend them if these were not a cut above--I really love them <3

Biggest thing that has helped has been Bob Ross videos so I don't get super frustrated with myself. I've just been using this to draw stuff but if you have anything that might be better let me know
I'm not sure if this is what you mean but there are the art books! They are mostly art work but contain lots of commentary. I've seen the one for Nausicaa one at my local book store. I know there is one for spirited away, princess mononoke and totoro. Maybe more. Here is an amazon link to one:
It's either "dubbed" or "subtitled". I don't know about the subtitles, but Mononoke seems to be available on Amazon regularly.
Amazon Canada advertises that it comes with the slip, so you could always try that. I mean, it might not be the most ideal solution, but it's something.
Worse case it doesn't have it, and you can complain it was falsely advertised and get a refund for it. I know in the past I've done that when it shows movies that come with it.
There are also a lot of Ghibli movies listed that clearly show in the image that they don't have one too. So if the picture shows it, there is a good chance it does.
Looks like Amazon has them in stock.
If you are in the Bay Area, then Mitsuwa Marketplace's adjacent bookstore has them in stock as well as other Ghibli merch.
The entire collection is available for half the list price on amazon rn
Have you found additional details for the timing of the translator change at Viz? I think the publication and localisation history for Nausicaä around the world is fascinating.
> The (second) translator's perspective.
A four star review with that header was posted on Amazon, on October 10, 2003, for an earlier English edition, titled "Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind". The reviewer continued:
> "I translated the last 3/7 of this series, and in nine years of translating about 5000 pages of manga, this was the best and most important title I worked on. If you go way back to the earliest reviews here (1998), you'll find some very nice comments by Toren Smith about my translation, but I must say Toren and Dana's was a hard act to follow. They did an excellent job on the first 4/7, and my biggest challenge was to maintain both their tone and their level of quality. [...]"
and went on quite a bit longer. The whole review is an illuminating read, too.
Don't know if you've found your way there but Rachel Thorn offers fascinating perspectives, retrospectives, on Nausicaä, on translations, on her Twitter account, among other places.
I bought them on an expo a few years back, the only online result I could find for it was on Amazon but price went way up.
Haha. I know what you mean. The only Ghibli blu-ray I had prior to this steelbook series was Totoro. Otherwise I have Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Howl's on DVD. I don't mind upgrading from DVD to blu-ray, especially if it's part of a series, but I am having to rebuy Totoro when that comes out in October. I'll just give my niece and nephew my original copy, and everyone's happy.
Yes, you can purchase a full collection on Amazon for ~$50, and it's worth every single penny.
Hot topic, but they were expensive for a small trinket like that, but it was a mystery blind box with all sort of colors and what each color spirit meant. Check out Totoro mystery blind box glass collectibles and you should be able to still find them online. I’ve checked all my local hot topics after I found them one day and I haven’t been able to find any in store or on the hot topic website. I believe they were 12.99 a piece.

I watched Grave of the Fireflies in high school. 20 years later and I'm contemplating watching it again to see if it's as heartbreaking as I remember it. I own it on blu-ray, so I'm tempted.

I originally read it in what was its standard 7 part form. It has since been condensed, I saw one where i think they combined it into 3-4 volumes (doubling up all but the last biggest volume). Prob is a huge one, but a 1000+ page large format book would be a chore to hold id think!
This is the version I got from a library in the 2000s, then late bought. 7 volumes, english, reads right to left. Has the original Japanese "Sound effects" like BOOM etc so if you cant figure out what sound is being made you have to go back to a sound effect index in the back to look it up, but the sound effects are part of the art so I liked this.
Hopefully you can find it in this form, or one of the condensed once were they put 2 or more books into bigger books! Try libraries, they might surprise you!

Alright, I gave it a shot and this is what I came up with. It's not perfect, but it's as good as I could get it since the train track sways back and forth within the frame.

I'm sorry I've posted these results so many times! I promise I'm not in this for karma (I say as I make this separate comment). I was looking at the table for the 20th time and realized that it didn't account for how well-known a film is. Some of their pre-Ghibli works are on itunes and netflix, like castle of cagliostro and grave of fire flies. But this will depend slightly on what country you are in...

None of those are authentic, but if that doesn't matter to you, buy the one that will complete your collection the most.
I say non-authentic because they're all region 0, they all have chinese subtitles, and real collections don't normally put 3-4 films on one DVD (and Ghibli certainly wouldn't), and I didn't bother checking but their UPCs are probably fake.
I've never heard about the disc quality of any of these, but seeing one of your linked sellers has 288 copies for sale, I'll go out on a limb and say those discs are probably of very mediocre quality and will get damaged more easily.
Just for reference, Here is an official Ghibli collection.
Unfortunately, getting a complete set in a nice collection is impossible. Most of the movies in NA were released by Disney, with only a couple released by GKids. This means that 4 of the movies are going to look different because of the companies. Really annoying. And one of the movies - My Neighbours The Yamadas - doesn't have an official Blu-ray release in NA at all.
You could always check out Amazon (or Costco as someone else mentioned; I got most of mine there for pretty cheap, and I'm in Canada) to find them. If you prefer them to be uniform, and don't care about the cost, you can check out Amazon JPN for their versions. They look amazing, and come with both English and Japanese dub / sub. They ship directly to NA as well for a good price, so the whole set will cost you about $1000 USD or so. I know that's a lot, but meh. If you scroll down, you can see a bunch of the movies listed in the other sections of the page I linked :)
I’m calling the US version edited. I have the US released Blu-ray. I want the vhs version apparently. I was unaware that it never released in Japan on Blu-ray in the original story length. I seen this amazon listing: https://www.amazon.com/Nausicaä-Naushika-Warriors-Nausicaa-NON-USA/dp/B002VD5SB0 I assumed wrong that this is what I was looking for just in a UK format.
There's never been a Ghibli set before. But there has been a Miyazaki set which was an Amazon.com exclusive https://www.amazon.com/Collected-Miyazaki-Amazon-Exclusive-Blu-ray/dp/B0117V8BX8
any other North American sets you see are bootlegs. This is primarily because multiple different companies own the licensing rights to the Ghibli films in North America which would be a legal nightmare to get all of them together to make a set together.
Believe or not, even you buy them separately, Blu-rays are much cheaper there in the states than here in Japan. Blu-ray collection costs 52,378jpy currently which is approximately $470! Sigh... The below is the link to the Japanese amazon.

And it’s personal opinion honestly.
Spirited Away and Mononoke are not listed amongst my favorite of the Ghibli’s personally.
I don't know of one that has all Ghibli films in it, but there was a really good, legitimate one that has all of Miyazaki's major films: https://www.amazon.com/Collected-Miyazaki-Amazon-Exclusive-Blu-ray/dp/B0117V8BX8 - I know it's legit because my family got it for me as a gift a few years ago. It's a really great set. But I also know for a fact they didn't pay $600 for it! It seems to have gone out of production (for now?). Sorry I don't have a more helpful answer for you. :(
If you have a computer it should be able to play DVDs if it has a CD drive. If it doesn't you can get an external CD/DVD drive pretty cheaply on Amazon nowadays. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Rioddas-External-Portable-Rewriter-Superdrive/dp/B07DLRG9VH/
Thank you! I have a superglued pig nose attached now but they are very affordable specs from Amazon.
