On the one hand, I do think that Smoke it or Soak it introduces tactically interesting elements from which emerge a fundamentally balanced meta. The format was developed largely as a response to the fact that See it or Pee it has a dominant strategy which is correct in almost all cases (peeing, obviously). I think its mechanics naturally incentivizes evolving metagames, as the format cannot be solved due to the lack of a Nash equilibrium. In See it or Pee it, once peeing becomes a popular strategy such that you are able to predict your opponent's plays, it is almost always the best play to select peeing yourself. However, in Smoke it or Soak it, peeing has a significant downside. However, this downside is a reason not to play the format - smoking urine-soaked, ink-based cardboard is unhealthy and lacks the distinctive flavor of your favorite tobacco roll. In a controlled study co-conducted by Harvard's medicinal board and the DCI, it was found that consistently smoking pissed-on Magic cards increases your chance of cancer by 420%, and when playing with strangers, increases your chance of receiving STDs by almost 40% (source). However, since the trial could not legally use real marijuana, their findings may be suspect. As we all know, regular cannabis use cures cancer and STDs, so it is entirely possible that these effects are reversed when using real herb.

I think in your position MTG Arena would be a good place to start. Unfortunately, it is still in Beta. You could look at some of the Duels of the Planeswalkers games though. There's "Magic Duals" on PC, XBOne and maybe iOS, which has online multiplayer but they've pulled any future support (so don't buy any packs etc).

I would recommend "Magic 2015" which I think you can get on every major platform except PS4 and XBOne. You don't have to pay for boosters or anything in that, and while it does have online multiplayer, you're mostly playing against the AI in random pickup matches or a sort of story mode. It's free on android and probably similarly free on steam or ios or whatever.

EDIT: lots of the google reviews seem to be grumbling about paying for packs in the 2015 game. I certainly never paid for any, so I dunno if they've just changed the monetisation completely since I played, or whether these guys are just very impatient!

/uj I read Trigger Warning as my first Gaiman and it felt like a nice, quick way to get into his stuff. Some of those stories still stick with me.

Are you using it for organising tournaments? I tried using Companion and found it very lacking. Torg seemed like a better alternative to me.
