One of the Knytt Stories default stories is based around exploration. While there are power-ups, obstacles and a ultimate objective, a lot of effort was put into making an explorable world full of details.
LittleBigPlanet 1/2, the new Sam & Max games, the new Monkey Island games.. Knytt Stories is also an interesting low-key 2D platformer that's not overly difficult or punishing of failure and focused on exploration.
Treasure adventure game. Amazing game by one person and it's free!
https://www.gog.com/game/treasure_adventure_game
Almost forgot about Knytt Stories! Also free and by one person. Highly recommend.
Some of the best games I've played when it comes to exploration would be Within a Deep Forest and Knytt Stories. A lot of people ignore these games because they don't really have combat or anything like that, but they are fantastic games and people should really give them a try. Knytt Stories in particular, has a lot of really good user-made levels that are just amazing and expansive.
I would also say Dark Souls does exploration pretty well. It's not as open ended as something like Skyrim, but it makes up for that by being a much more interesting world to actually explore.
La Mulana is another great game with lots of exploration.
It looks like this game mixes the two first Knytt games (Knytt and Knytt Stories) with some elements from Within a Deep Forrest.
All the games Nifflas has made so far are pretty fun, and this one looks pretty interesting as well.
Don't listen to these schmo's. Beginners need something simple and fun. I suggest Knytt and Knytt Stories. Both are two very simple atmospheric platformers that don't task you with difficult puzzles or challenges - perfect for beginners. Also, they're free to download.
If she happens to like that and wants something similar, An Untitled Story offers a bit more of the same but also ramps up the difficulty a tad.
As for 3D games? I wouldn't know where to start, honestly. Also, I can't think of any simple co-op games either.
> Iji and Cave Story
Both of those are really good... BUT, they are pretty difficult games to start out with.
Knytt Stories would be a good starting point, though. There's enough challenge to be interesting, but it's more about the exploration and general sense of wonder.
Off the top of my head. Look em up on Steam! :
Super Meat Boy - Hard platformer
VVVVVV - Hard platformer
Knytt/Knytt Stories - Ambient platformer (Old. And Free. But I like 'em)
The Binding of Isaac - Twin-stick shooter-ish? I dunno what to call it.
Aquaria - Exploration
Osmos - Ambient puzzle
World of Goo - Physics puzzle
Braid - Puzzle platformer
Anyone who enjoys this will probably love Knytt Stories, Knytt, Within a Deep Forest, any of the games by Nifflas. They have the same feeling of exploration, and the environments are quite beautiful at times. Within a Deep Forest is pretty good for its metroidvania aspects especially. I think he has all these games up for free download, check them out if you like this:
Knytt Stories should be added to this list. Not to mention that it has dozens of amazing free user-made levels.
A couple of my favourites in no particular order:
There are a ton of great SNES games, those are just a few that I find myself coming back to a lot. Chrono Trigger probably tops this list, but you're already on that, so you're set there.
Also if you wanted to just have some arcade games you can goof around with, download a Neo-Geo emulator like NeoRageX and hit up some Metal Slug action. Friggin expensive in an actual arcade, but when the quarters are virtual it's fantastic. King of Fighters is also a great series, and Puzzle Bobble for the days when you really don't feel like thinking about anything.
Lots of great and legitimately free indie games too. I'll just mention two I only rarely see people talk about:
Anyways, there's definitely enough out there to keep you occupied until you can get DS2 =P
Maybe you are thinking of the "Don't Eat The Mushroom" user level (playthrough) of the game Knytt Stories.
If anyone is sitting up here on the fence next to me, trying to decide if this is a worthwhile purchase or not (because $15 in NA, damn), please to enjoy the free PC version of Knytt Stories which might give you a good idea of what to expect in Underground. On that page you'll also find links to the original Knytt and some additional levels.
I've heard the name in passing but I've never paid any attention before now. I'm enjoying Stories so far, but after feeling burned by Sine Mora and Big Sky Infinity, I'm a little gunshy now. Especially at that price point, and knowing that it's in the EU IGC, and wondering if it's going to get a price drop for US PS+...
Knytt Stories is one of my favorite indie games. It's a cute little platformer with excellent environments, really awesome ambient music, and challenging puzzles. You can get it here: http://nifflas.ni2.se/?page=Knytt+Stories
Hello redditors. If you liked the music in the above video, I encourage you to play the game Knytt Stories by another Swedish indie game designer, Nifflas. It contains the song in that video as well as much more similar music, and manages to create some memorable atmosphere.
You should check out Knytt and Knytt Stories, which are two free indie platforming/exploration games.
If I remember well, the main goal of each game is to find and acquire pieces of your spaceship scattered throughout the world. You eventually get to find better equipment which lets you reach normally unreachable areas.
All the popular masterpieces have been named. I'll add In the Company of Myself. Yes, it's a Flash game on Newgrounds. It's also a fucking masterpiece that only takes a few minutes to play through, so go play it!
Don't Eat the Mushroom is a Knytt mod. Knytt Stories is a masterpiece in and of its self, but after playing through the main quest, Don't Eat the Mushroom is the best mod. It's a funny mod, so it's best played with friends watching, rather than alone. Turn up the sound, too.
Knytt Stories, a free platformer that relies on creating immersive, atmospheric world to explore more than anything else. You dodge creatures attacks instead of fighting them directly, you throughout the game you pick up permanent powerups that give you new abilities like double jumps, the ability to climb walls, etc that allow you to reach new areas in the world. The built-in map will take you maybe an hour or two to beat, and the (free) expansion contains four more levels that are 15-45 minutes each. The real magic of the game comes with its expansive level editor. Right now there's a small, but tight-knit and dedicated community built around making knytt maps, though it's definitely shrunk in recent times (the game's pretty old). I would download it and give it a shot, it's 100% free (no microtransactions or anything) and one of the best gaming experiences of my life.
Hmm as a PC gamer, I think I can give some Metroidvania titles on my own - I can be wrong on some titles not being 100% metroidvania genre, but maybe you and OP will find them useful.
Starting with the quite famous in the indie world VVVVVV - http://store.steampowered.com/app/70300/
Knytt Stories - http://nifflas.ni2.se/?page=Knytt+Stories - there are custom levels
Within a Deep Forest - http://nifflas.ni2.se/?page=Within+a+Deep+Forest - just one, pretty long map.
Basically Nifflas is doing these kind of games, I like them a lot. So there's my recommendation if you're looking for PC games like that.
Also by the same person: Knytt Stories, plenty of user made maps, and many with no combat (actually, you have no combat options at all, it's pure avoidance).
knytt, City of Doom (remake) and tyrain 2000 there are dozens i could list but there are three that haven't been said yet.
It's free to download, only a few hours long, but its one of the finest crafted games I've ever played. Challenging but serene at the same time. I can't recommend it enough. I emplore you to play it. Play it. Just fucking play it. Please. For the children.
An Untitled Story (scroll down)
Knytt Stories (and Knytt)
A couple of indie games that are casual and fun. Enjoy.
I'm going to necro one from the dead here. Knytt Stories. I don't know if it still has an active community or not but Knytt Stories is a community driven platformer game. It has an official campaign called "The Machine" and a few other official expansion stories you can download, but a lot of the good stuff is community generated.
Nifflas, the guy behind it, went on to create a successor called Knytt Underground which is on Steam and one of the trading cards actually mentions the protagonist of Knytt Stories, saying there are many stories passed down about her, but a lot of them don't make any sense, inferring that everything community created is in some sense, considered canonical.
If you're into platformers or you want to dabble in a bit of game design in general it's a fantastic free game to pick up. It's got a super intuitive level designer and as I recall installing community made campaigns is super easy as well.
And remember. Don't eat the mushrooms...
want: Neon Drive
funniest joke I know: No Man's Sky
number: 111
I'll add in my long-time favorite game as well which I recommend. If you like some chill little exploration platforming with pleasant music - check out Nifflas' games, namely Knytt Stories. Tons of community-made levels ranging from stupid memes to puzzles, to absurdly hard gauntlets.
Knytt Stories is a level creation software thingy made by a guy named Nifflas. The speedrun you see is of the demo game that comes when you download Knytt Stories. http://nifflas.ni2.se/?page=Knytt+Stories
Why is this downvoted so much? I found this quite interesting. Controls is one of the first things that matters for new player to a game.
I suggest trying out Knytt Stories, it got one of the best control feels for platformer I ever encountered.
There's Knytt Stories.
http://nifflas.ni2.se/?page=Knytt+Stories
It's free. And it has a level editor with a community who still makes levels to this day:
I know the main campaign might be a bit easy for you, but there are a ton of hell-platformers made by the community. Here's the forum where some of the more well-known levels are stashed:
http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?board=39.0
Each level is categorized by difficulty so you won't have to scrounge much.
http://nifflas.ni2.se/?page=Knytt+Stories
This game right here. Fantastic atmospheric pieces throughout; I still listen to its soundtrack a ton.
A game that perfectly scratched my platformer/exploration/puzzle solving itch was Saira, from the maker of Knytt Stories. Which you may also like.
Anything ever written by Terry Pratchett, ever. Esp. Going Postal, Hogswatch (of which there is also a series, like Colour of Magic, I think), and the Bromeliad trilogy.
Try the game Knitt Stories. It's free, and it's magic. Not really humorous, but atmosphere reminds me of Trine's.
The book Od Magic by Patricia Mckillip has a similar atmosphere to Trine, as well. Fairy tale-esk and lighthearted.
I think the genre you're looking for is "Metroidvania".
I can recommend VVVVVV and Knytt Stories.
Knytt and Knytt Stories both have an amazing, unique sense of atmosphere and exploration that I have not found in any other game I've played.
If you've not played it yet, Portal. It's not particularly long, but for adventure, humor, and an all around great time you can't go wrong here.
I also second Minecraft and Chrono Trigger (really, this one is the essence of adventure).
Arcanum is a really, really great rpg set in a steampunk world where technolgy and magic interfere with one another. It's got interesting politics, interesting side-quests (not just fetch), brilliant characters, and sweet graphics (play with the fan-made hi-resolution patch that let's you set the game to any resolution). It allows a lot of freedom in what kind of character you will play; you can play a mage or a technologist, a barbarian warrior or a super charismatic person who hardly ever has to fight (it might even be possible to play through the entire game without ever fighting). This is one of my favorite games ever, and it certainly made me forget about everything else for a real long time. You can get official and unofficial patches (hightly recommended) from this site, along with some fan-made mods that I haven't tried yet but which are purportedly quite good.
Siberia is a point-and-click adventure game with a plot as touching, original, and interesting as that of a really great movie, and the graphics are beautiful in a cyan-esk way. It's completely linear, but the story is, as I said, excellent.
For a freeware game, try knit stories. It's one of my favorite platformers, and it's got great music.
