I swear by https://tasks.org/. If you're struggling to keep track of all your todos, you might want to give it a try.
* I'm not affiliated with tasks.org. Feel free to report/remove as spam as you see fit.
I've tried several over the last few years. IMHO, for Android, the best is Tasks.org which is on both Google and F-droid. Also very good is aCalendar+ (pay a couple of dollars for the tasks integration). The latter combines calendar and tasks.
Now I use Tasks.org combined with Simple Calendar. Works great!
For Desktop, I use Thunderbird with Lightning - provides a great integrated email-calendar-tasks combo with features built in e.g. email can be converted into a task or calendar entry.
Thank you for taking the time to respond. I immediately signed up for nextcloud then got lazy and connected tasks.org to Google Tasks, but will go back and play with CalDav. I really should just pay you a dollar a year. That is not going to break anyone.
I ended up switching to aCalendar+ on Android which integrates tasks into the calendar quite nicely and works by leveraging the tasks.org app as well.
The notes thing I haven't quite nailed down though on my end, Nextcloud notes seems underwhelming while things like carnet just seem a bit cluttered/less functional especially on mobile than Google Keep.
Do you leverage a separate Joplin server and does it integrate into Nextcloud at all? Ideally I'd only want to spend my time in Nextcloud versus having yet another webpage to bookmark.

For tasks/todos there is https://tasks.org/
(Plus I use https://www.etesync.com/ to backup and sync em.)
For notes, I use Trello - I'll be happy to hear about alternative as well.
I basically need FOSS Trello fork :D, because Trello is (apart not being FOSS) awesome.
Tasks.org dev here - unfortunately the app is Android only. However if you set up synchronization with CalDAV or EteSync there are a variety of web and desktop apps you can use. You can find more info at tasks.org/sync and tasks.org/caldav
Maybe check out Tasks.org, it's free and open source and syncable with Etesync (end to end encryption, but paid). You can also check out privacytools.io for more alternatives to other applications/services you use!
That explains the data loss. Consider this scenario:
Is there a way to use the recurring functionality in Tasks to do true recurring tasks? ie, a web app instead of Google Tasks to mark tasks complete?
I'm trying for full task list functionality which syncs between phone and either a Windows app, or a webpage.
Thanks for the help.
I've found tasks.org and etesync to be a steep learning curve to figure out how to use. I'm a layman but not a retard. I don't have 3 hours to figure out how they all work together. Too complicated.
The open-source app called Tasks is perfect for my homeowner responsibilities. It was the only free, secure, no-ads, open-source app that had a specific feature: recurring tasks from the date of last completion. Most task or calendar apps let you set up a recurring task, like replacing your HVAC air filters every 6 months. At the 6-month mark it reminds you. But say you get busy and take 1 month to actually complete the task. I don't want the next reminder 5-months after that. The Tasks.org app allows you to set it to remind you 6 months after completion of the previous time the task ran.
I second BitWarden (also open-source) for passwords.
I know this is an old thread but I cannot find that setting in either Tasks, org on Android, nor in Nextcloud 24.0.3.
Trying to setup Tasks.org mostly on the phone but I'd like the nextcloud backup.
> assigning a due date using week day names doesn't work at all. Correction: Found it's only working if weekdays are written lower case. A Substring like "sday" stays as in the name, abbreviations like "tue" work. Is the help wrong here?
There's been a fix to that recently (not yet released, only in unstable). Can you check if this is still a problem on try?
> there seems to be no mass editing (a.e. for deleting all of my test entries)?
That's correct, that's not implemented yet. There's a discussion about this feature here: https://kolaente.dev/vikunja/frontend/issues/445
> I expected that I can filter Todos with a click to a label. Doesn't seen to work, do I have to create a filter any time I want to see all Todos belonging to a label?
You can also filter for labels using a list, but if you want to see all tasks across all lists you'll need to add a filter. I think it makes sense to have this though, added an item to the backlog.
> When using the Android Tasks App Labels don't seem to get synced?
Are you using the Tasks app or the android app?
What has been working quite well for me (but involved a fair amount of setup...) is something like this:
There's still some things I have not finished but by and large this setups allows me to keep an eye on things (so far).
I believe Tasks.org (available on Android) has this option in its recurring tasks. It calls the two options "Repeat from completion date" (what you don't want) and "Repeat from due date" (what you are looking for).
In fact, it is the best OSS task manager that I have used on any platform.

I'm still searching for a similarly ideal Windows task manager (currently using Thunderbird); I think there may be better options on Linux.
That's awesome. Now I understood that I can use any client that supports CalDAV. I won't need Outlook then... phew :-).
I just looked at the services you've described and tried to find one I could use. But now I can use Thunderbird and the like. Perfect!
PS The first time I tried it it only synced parts of what I have in the Android app (only the default list
). This most probably has to do with me having set some properties wrong/inconsistent which I'm going to check.
I use kSync but really don't like Open Tasks.
Tasks.org works with NextCloud, it's both available on PlayStore and F-Droid... I'd like to use it to sync my kTasks with any app I want to use regradless the OS (Linux, Win, Android for my part).
I'm pretty sure it's possible but I never found any documentation about it - and that's the issue : not being able to use any open source service to sync with an open source based provider
I'm able to connect to my CalDAV server from my iPhone/iPad/Mac. It syncs and integrates with the built-in Reminders app. FYI I'm using Synology Calendar but seeing that Tasks.org supports CalDAV I think it should work too.
Here are the main apps I use:
Twire - Twitch client
Aegis - 2FA
Etar - Calendar
Infinity - reddit client
Tasks.org - todo list
Plex / Plex amp - media stuff
HA
Youtube Vanced (soon replaced by newpipe with sponsorblock)
IceRaven - web browser with firefox extensions like ublock etc
Signal for communication
Proton Mail - emails
Aurora Store - google store replacement
Bitwarden - password manager
DAVx - to sync calendar/todo/contacts with home server
Duo - for homelab push notifications to login for stuff like bitwarden and other
f-droid - for open source app downloads
feeder - rss
FFUpdate - to update iceraven
Kubenav - to navigate through my self hosted kubernetes cluster
photos - from synology but will move to piwigo once I setup piwigo server on kube
podverse - podcasts
termux - terminal emulator
twidere X - twitter client
>Hi all. So any app I have downloaded from Playstore that is also available on Fdroid, I should delete and redownload on Fdroid?
well that depends if it's the same version of the app. some are the same on the google play store and f-droid (Showly, Geometric Weather) and some are different (Tasks.org, Osmand)
>
Is every app on Playstore also available on Fdroid or not yet?
No, F-droid only allows FOSS (free and open-source) software. Some F-droid apps are available on Play Store as well, in some cases it's the same app and sometimes it's a different version. Non-foss apps from Play Store are not available on f-droid
Yeah, I really like decsynccc because it also allows me to sync my calendar and contacts locally to my internal storage.
Though, one downside to this is that Tasks.org don't support syncing attachments.
If you are fine with having a slightly complex setup, you can use:
Alternatively, you can use Joplin which is a notes taking app, but also supports to-dos.
So here are the open source apps that I have on my phone that have modern rounded UI or sort of.

Aegis for 2FA
Aurora Store for Downloading PlayStore apps
BMI Calculator for what it says it does
Birday for birthday reminders
Bromite for browsing the internet
Droid-ify or Aurora Droid for downloading f-droid apps
Simple Gallery Pro fo gallery
FlorisBoard for keyboard in BETA
Stealth for Reddit (also Infinity for Reddit)
SongTube for YouTube (support download) and local music player
Metro for local music player
<strong>Monero.com</strong> for XMR wallet or Cake Wallet for XMR + BTC + LTC
Randomix for choice making
Session or Signal for communications
SnapDrop for file sharing over local WiFi
Tachiyomi for manga reading
<strong>Tasks.org</strong> for tasks managment
Warden for app scanning (third party trackers and loggers)

Magic Earth for Maps CLOSED SOURCE with strong privacy policy
For more app check my list https://alternativeto.net/list/28655/the-ultimate-f-droid-setup/
You can use Tasks.org + DecSync CC + Syncthing to synchronize your data to a PC. There you would set up Radicale + Radicale-DecSync and then point a CalDAV client at Radicale (disclaimer: I have never tried this myself)
The easiest option for PC access at the moment is to sync Tasks.org with Nextcloud and use the Nextcloud Tasks web app
try asking this in the r/fossdroid.
on top of my head joplin works, tasks.org should work too since i think it uses DAV to sincronise, so you could use it with clients on desktop.
It will let you set reminders from your phone. That's mainly where I do things from, but it's nice to have the list of to do items accessible from my watch.
Unless you meant '...would like the ability to create some reminders from my watch.' - in which case, I don't know of a way to do that with Tasks.org, unfortunately.

Good luck!
thanks. I would like the ability to create some reminders from my phone as well, and it doesn't seem like Tasks.org would allow me to do that, but I'll take a look and see how it works for me.
Not an iOS user, but I am a fan of open standards and use the following setup with my Android. Since the standards are open there should be some good app for that as well.
Backend for the tasks is CalDAV, in my case Nextcloud. Front end on my phone is Tasks (from tasks.org)
Front end on my Linux desktop is Todoman from pimutils. It syncs using vdirsyncer.
On my Windows work machine I sync from my Nextcloud to other services using CalDav Synchronizer and use Microsoft Todo as front end.
CalDAV on Windows sucks dick.
Only a single premium subscription / lifetime license program for Windows offers nested subtask support with CalDAV syncing.
EssentialPIM offer a full outlook alternative for Windows, albeit with a hefty paid licensing to purchase before you can even test CalDAV functionality in the free version.
Rainlendar exists with more features for CalDAV sync than any other free application, but it is years old, and very sinfully ugly, and IMO not productive or aesthetic.
Personally, I've given up on CalDAV task apps for Windows. I love tasks.org on android, and the nextcloud web app and backend hosting for the CalDAV that I run on my home server.
But when it comes to the Windows environment, I will use thunderbird for free to sync my mail, give PGP support for my work, and the calendar. For tasks, I just give up and go to my nextcloud webgui and use that.
In gmail/gcalendar you need to open the Tasks sidebar (blue circle with a checkmark on the right), then click on the drop down at the top of the sidebar and select 'Create new list'. This new list should then appear in Tasks.org next time you sync
Thanks for the note about the completion date vs due date recurrence, that's exactly what I needed.
I do have a suggestion for recurring task completion history. Leaving all current recurring task functionality intact, you could add this feature: When a recurring task is marked complete, an identical, static, nonrecurring, "dummy" task is created and marked complete, alongside the original recurring task. Thus, a recurring task would leave behind a trail of completed tasks, one for every time the recurring task was marked complete.
I suggest making this feature a task-specific setting, though, so that users could choose which tasks they want history for.

By the way, thanks for developing Tasks.org! It's by far the best open-source Android tasks app, and is far better than anything available for Windows. (p.s. a Windows and Linux version would be great, or even just a web app)
Glad you got it set up!
I can't take credit for self-signed SSL support, that is thanks to cert4android (from the DAVx5 developer)
And your confusion with the lists is definitely a UX issue that I need to solve on my end.
When users set up an account on my Tasks.org service there is a button to automatically migrate all of their local lists, but I haven't implemented a more general solution to move lists to other services yet.
For work, I use
I enter a lot of notes in OneNote on what I'm working, things to look into later, etc. OneNote also lets me create Outlook Tasks (which I prefer over the To Do Tag), which can have reminders & due dates on them. Outlook lets me flag emails as Tasks as well, and also gives a centralized view of all of my Tasks. I prefer the Nine app for Android, in part because I like the way I can see and manage Tasks from a widget.

For personal use, it's mostly all Android. And I really like widgets, because the things I need to know or do are right there as soon as I turn on the screen.

For continuous reminders you're asking about, I recommend Loop Habit Tracker, or something very much like it. There are some similar apps that are more game-ified, if you are into that type of motivation. The Tasks.org app can do recurring reminders, and I use it for some reminders like that (e.g. schedule haircut appointment). But for things that are more frequent, that I want to make a habit, that I want to track my consistency, I use Loop.
To add to what others have said, some developers have additional "pro" features for free in their F Droid versions, that you would have to pay for in their Play Store versions.
Just off the top of my head - Simple Gallery and Tasks.org are two of these types of apps.
The workaround works! It would be better if thing is being default. Nobody uses subtasks without maintasks anyway :)
I didn't think to use todo apps before tasks.org because of a number of feature constraints, but my productivity has really grown since I discovered the app by chance.
Thank you, my life savior
Out of the box Tasks.org works offline only, and your offline lists are displayed under the header 'Local lists'. 'My Tasks' is a filter that shows all of your lists combined into one view.
If you have enabled synchronization then you can tap on ☰
and you should see your synchronized lists underneath your account. You can tap on ☰ > Settings > Task defaults > Default list
to choose which list is used by default for new tasks.
You can move a task by opening up the edit screen and choosing a new list, or by using multi-select from the task list screen
Yes, a subscription is required to unlock all of the synchronization features. Tasks has a 'name your price' subscription model with a minimum price of $0.99USD/year
There are a couple other options:
Yes, it's amazing but I just need something simple. I was using Todoist free and it's enough for me. I saw Tasks.org on F-droid and it looks good but the free version doesn't sync unless you host it yourself. Maybe I go with this but only on my phone. Thanks.
Direct EteSync v2 support will be available in v11.0. This feature is currently available to alpha testers, but there were a couple minor issues in that version so I didn't roll it out to beta testers. I hope to release a new beta version early next week. You can sign up for alpha testing here

Thanks for your recommendations!
I tried them all.
So far, none of them seem to qualify. Not even close.
My old workflow:
Basically, that's four interaction steps.
With Tasks.org I could not do it in less than seven steps. Others were even worse.
It seems to be the case that GTD/Todo-Mgt-apps can not be efficient for purely reminders any more because they have so much more functionality I don't need.
In worst case, I have to build one on my own - probably with Tasker, because I don't know how to code Android apps.
As u/shompoe said, EteSync (which I created). Works great with Tasks.org! I'm not sure about what kind of filtering you are looking for, but we are very quick to respond to feedback. :)

What message? Phone message or message from messager app? Do you mean notification?
If its notification, tasks is an excellent one.
Easer can run scheduled tasks, and it is "event-driven" meaning it can run tasks base on events, not just time.
Finally, r/termux can do wonders, you could run python application in there, it can schedule whatsapp or phone message AFAIK.

Thanks for the summons!
u/Ginni098 Usually when reminders don't fire it is because the system or a third party app is interfering with background apps. If you've read tasks.org/notifications and that hasn't helped, click on '☰ > Help & feedback > Contact developer' and send me your device details so I can look in to it
- Tasks.org for Tasks
- GoodTime for Pomodoros
- Wallabag for saving articles
- K-9 for Email
- Markor for note-taking and todos
- AntennaPod for Podcasts (kind of productive)
- SimpleCalender or Etar as calendar app
Unfortunately not, but if you synchronize with CalDAV, EteSync, or Google Tasks then there are various web interfaces and desktop clients available. You can find more info at tasks.org/sync and tasks.org/caldav
No, Todoist is proprietary service and premium subscription, but free version does all I need.
There are a lot of self hosted options, however, for example Tasks app for Nextcloud, todo.txt which can use cloud drives for sync, taskwarrior, and many other options. Tasks.org is a nice app, also syncs through Nextcloud's Tasks

Check this thread https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/egb05h/note_taking_and_documenting/
Here's what I use:
Notes: Nextcloud with the Notes application installed, as you mentioned. I use it all the time.
Tasks/Lists: Also Nextcloud, but using the tasks.org app (downloaded off F-Droid) and Daxv5. Works REALLY well as the app is beautiful and syncs well with nextcloud tasks. It also supports due dates/times which is handy for me.
Calendar: Nextcloud, of course
Wiki: Bookstack app! I love this and is very pretty and mobile friendly (no app, but UI is very nice). It's running on an Ubuntu VM and is very snappy for me, at least, and I've installed it a couple times across different servers. Maybe give it another try?
I use tasks. Doesn't sync with your calendar sadly, but it does sync with Nextcloud tasks, and it does support notifications. You cannot dismiss them until you press 'done' on the notification, which really helped me with putting off tasks. Although, you can snooze them too.
IFTTT can append to .org files just fine. For me <code>tasks.org</code> in the filename field does the trick. Just make sure you don't have any other file with a similar name. I had a tasks.org_archive
file and IFTTT kept adding entries there.
