I've used it on occasion to send photos to my wife's phone and it craps out 50% of the time. I can't imagine using it for something like backups. You're better off getting Superbeam and using that if you want to wirelessly transfer large amounts of data between devices directly. Not sure if all the features are in the free one as I've had the pro version for awhile.
Check out superbeam. You can send files using either wifi direct, Hotspot, or even the local network if both devices are connected. You can even send files to your pc. It can use a qr code or nfc for pairing. Been using it for years and I love it. I use it a lot for transferring pictures to my pc.

Superbeam for sharing photos in person. Unlike the built-in Android Beam that uses NFC, it uses wifi, and it's much better than the built in Android Beam because 1.) you can select multiple photos (or actually whatever files), instead of starting again for each one 2.) It's much, much, much...much, faster.
I actually just used Android Beam up until...yesterday, when deciding there must be something better and finally Googling it.
I'm going to assume you're talking about the Wi-Fi in your MacBook, not the phone. If that's the case, SuperBeam still works, assuming it works the same on Mac as it does PC, as I use it on my ethernet-connected Windows machine. Here's the download for the computer and for the phone. You might need the pro version, but it's worth it in my opinion. I've been using it for a few years now and it's way more convenient than any other transfer method I've used.
I just use Superbeam, I know it's not baked directly into the OS but I'm not a fan of a bloated os. If I need a functionality like Superbeam I'll just download it.

Used airdroid and stopped. SuperBeam is a good one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.majedev.superbeam
Now using BitTorrent Sync: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bittorrent.sync
I like SuperBeam. I haven't used it in a while, but when I did it was great for transferring to any other device.
I haven't used the WiFi Direct feature it has, but it should work easily enough.
Over wifi with Solid Explorer FTP addon or
Superbeam app: - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.majedev.superbeam
Check your drivers on your PC, to see if they are correct or need to be updated?
I have a solution. An app called Superbeam. When you open the app and select the files you want to send it will create a Wi-Fi network (unless it's connected to one already) and generate a QR code. Then you open up Superbeam on another phone, scan the QR code and in a few seconds the transfer will start. That's it.
If you want to send files to a computer then the computer has to connect to the Wi-Fi network that the phone created or the same one the phone is on, and then type in the IP address and port that the app gives you. And then you do the same thing.
That being said, I wouldn't recommend using it on a public Wi-Fi network, instead use it on a network that you trust or create a Wi-Fi network.
Have you tried Super Beam? I've used this for a while now, and it works really well.
I tried the Files Go transfer, and it had a similar sharing process, but bombed out at 90% every time. Could be that it was affected by trying to reconnect to my work wifi.
MTP mode is annoying for most users. Removing/Inserting sdcard is also
I have gotten into the habit of transferring files over wifi instead!
I use this app: - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.majedev.superbeam&hl=en
^^^ Last update in 2015, but still works.
Alternatively some file managers also have methods of using wifi.
Super beam is a nice file transfer app which doesn't require the app to be on the recievers phone tho the process of sending is not as straight forward and simple as in shareit and xender ,having the app on recievers phone solves this issue.
Why are app devs adding these useless "features" what is in this for them as it only makes me and I guess everyone not want to use the app anymore, I've seen this happen to so many apps that i loved its heartbreaking, first uc browser then es file explorer and now xender.
Anyway here's the link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.majedev.superbeam
> At the moment I'm just using the explorer on my phone to download from Drive, then copy to Music from Downloads. It's tedious as hell (especially since I'm super anal about songs being in folders by artist, and afaik I can't copy full folders, just files) so if there's a better way I'm all ears!
I have many, many, gigs of music organized in folders by artist, and then subfolders by album, so I feel your pain! It seems like you have figured a lot of this out, but I'll share my thoughts regardless. Hope they help.
I have never used a chromebook, but they are cloud-based aren't they -- there are no actual files on your chromebook, just in the cloud on Drive? If so, that is the source of your problem because you can't drag/drop folders from Drive (as far as I know). Going one by one, even multi-selecting in folders, will take forever.
The easier way is to get the files on a computer (in folders) and then use either a USB cable or an app like Superbeam to move entire folder structures. Note also that if you have the files on a USB drive you can plug the drive directly into your phone and use the phone (you will need an adapter like this one). I keep all my music files on a 1 TB seagate drive, and I just plug the drive into my phone whenever I need to move some files onto my N5X.
If the only place you have your files is Drive, then I think there may be no way around the tedious file-by-file download.
Well, though it's not actually an app, USB OTG is really convenient to have with you whenever you want to unload a boatload of files & media really quickly.
App-wise, SuperBeam has always worked great for me. It doesn't demand access to tons of bullshit or run in the background from startup to shutdown, & it has a nice design to boot.
Wifi direct in samsung phones should work to send huge files (without any size limits I suppose). However in the past I have had faced some connection issues with another android phone not made by Samsung. This was all solved by using super beam app (free). Anyone interested could should find it in the app store (link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.majedev.superbeam).
I am guessing the wifi direct issues between a Sammy and non Sammy should be solved now as I haven't tried using the default wifi direct feature in the longest time. If not, super beam should have no trouble doing it.
I use superbeam to accomplish this task.

Have you changed your phone recently?
To transfer files from my phone to my PC, or another phone I use SuperBeam, and it works flawlessly for me.
Try Superbeam or since both of your devices are Samsung branded, Wi-Fi Direct may work for you.
Try superbeam It also has a desktop component you can use.
Ignore all these suggestions. Just get Superbeam.

SuperBeam but the developer abandoned it. Still works great though
You can use the default OS Android Beam or if the file is big you can use Superbeam

You could use SuperBeam to send them over WiFi to each other.
You don't even need a router, it can send using WiFi Direct.
