Don't forget the Playstation emulator! You'll generally need a beefier phone, but man is there a ton of fun to be found.
Link for the interested. It requires some effort to get games on there, but once they're in, you'll have hours of enjoyment!
ePSXe is amazing. Tons of video options, control options, etc. Easy to set up, and should run well for you. I just beat MGS on my 6P using it actually. Great experience all things considered.
Just in case you weren't aware, you can get PlayStation emulators on Android and iOS these days - then all you'd need is to search for the relevant ROM...
Also worth mentioning that you can use Bluetooth controllers with an Android device ;)
(edited to add: I use ePSXe (Android version) )
The only ones I use are ePSXe and Snes9x EX+
Other than that, I just play Steam/PC games on the SHIELD. Oh and some Android native games.
You could play them on a psx emulator on android.
Try ePSXe for android or FPse for android both would do the job.
Use this emulator ePSXe https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.epsxe.ePSXe
Then all you need is the PS1 bios extracted to /EPSXE/BIOS/
And iso of the game you want to play extracted either to your main storage or an external sdcard. If you already own the game it is easy to rip PS1 games using a PC or you can find iso online.
You can use on screen controls or a Bluetooth controller such as a Xbox one controller, PS4 controller (maybe), Ipega, Gamesir, Flydigi, etc.
Latest version of ePSXe as of this comment is 2.0.6.
Go here...
> Preferences > TouchScreen Gamepad > Gamepad Skin Editor Landscape/Portrait (Default)
Tap the analog stick so it's highlighted in green, and then press the + button at the top of the screen to increase it's size. If you went to far, then tap the – button to bring it back a bit.
If you only see the DPAD and not the Joystick, tap the Swap Mode button at the top of the screen.
Once you reached the desired size, tap the Save & Exit button.
Once in game, you'll see the Analog button to the right of the Select & Start buttons, tap that to switch between the "Joystick" and the DPAD in game.
Installed the proper emulator? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.epsxe.ePSXe&hl=en_GB
you can download games (called roms) if you already own them legally (cough) here... https://www.loveroms.com/roms/?q=crash+bandicoot
Or just do the simple and sensible thing with https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.epsxe.ePSXe&hl=en
And using these http://i.imgur.com/pmTN7rd.jpg
At least that way you can play and control your game how YOU want.
ROMs are never apps. Apps can be used to run ROMs (like epsxe for example ) but Apps should be used to emulate game systems, not one per game.
You’re definitely in the right place to get some help - and u/dreamesper is spot on about being organized so they the emulators can easily find the ROMs for each system.
I was really frustrated when I first got my XD Plus, and the folks here helped a ton! It’s certainly not a plug-and-play kind of device.
I’m glad to help too where I can.
Also know that not all emulators are created equal, so if one frustrates you with lag, glitches, etc, then try another.
I have had good luck with ePSXe for PS1 emulation.
Best PSone emulator
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.epsxe.ePSXe
Also the gpd XD does not run GameCube well at all. I think the plus does a better job at that. You can always run PSone mgs.
ePSXe, but it's priced at $3.75 USD. In all honesty a lot of the free ones aren't that good (at least the ones I've tried). You should also keep in mind that you need a more powerful device for Android PS2 emulation anyways. What device do you plan on using this on?
I use Power PSX on my tablet with a Bluetooth controller and it works quite well. It does not seem to be on the Play Store anymore, though. ePSXe is supposed to be good. Link because I don't remember how to use the bot.
Hey, it's fair enough!
...Hold up- just having looked over your post again:
>Alright, I downloaded an android app called classic boy for my tablet just so I can play some old psx RPGs.
Bad idea- outside a few major contenders, multi-system emulators on Android tend to be a bit... flaky? (Though, there's probably an option hidden in its settings to reenable the touchscreen overlay controller).
If you want to play PSX titles on Android, the current gold standard by some way is ePSXe. Works pretty much perfectly with every JRPG I've tried, as well- and, crucially, includes a polygon jitter reduction/"GTE Accuracy" feature- which makes most games look a bit more stable than they did even on the original hardware.
Unfortunately, it's payware. But it's well worth the money- I must have poured hundreds of hours into FF7/FF8/Xenogears on the thing.
To be honest, the only way I've scratched the Diablo itch so far on Android is literally Diablo - boot up EPSXE and grab the PS1 version, the controls are surprisingly good and it's held up reasonably well overall.
ePSXe for Android
DraStic DS Emulator
Edit: Check out the /r/EmulationOnAndroid wiki HERE
Playstation: ePSXe. This isn't free but it is the best Playstation emulator I've used on Android.
PSP: PPSSPP. This is the free version but it is identical to the Gold paid version, which you can purchase if you wish to support the author.
NES: NES.emu. Again not free but to me the best.
SNES: SNES9x EX+.
N64: M64Plus FZ. This is the free version of the emulator. The paid version includes more features.
GameCube/Wii: Dolphin. You can also try the unofficial MMJ version which has a few more options for performance tweaking.
Gameboy/GBC: Pizza Boy or My Oldboy! Again these are the free version and there are paid ones with more features.
GameBoy Advance: Pizza Boy GBA or My Boy! The same as with their Gameboy counterparts, though My Boy! does not have a free version.
NDS: DraStic. I've tried a few NDS emulators and this is the only one I've found to be at all reliable. It is a paid app.
3DS: Citra. This is an unofficial build from the person who made the Dolphin MMJ. There is no official version for Android as yet.
Genesis/Sega CD: MD.emu. Another paid emulator but it is the best I've used.
Sega Saturn: Yaba Sanshiro. The best Sega Saturn emulator on Android in my opinion. The ads do get a little annoying though, so I'd go for the paid version if you can afford to.
Dreamcast: Redream or Reicast. Redream is my go to for Dreamcast but if you have an older device it may not run, in that case Reicast is a great alternative.
I know a lot of these are paid so here are a few other suggestion that may help and are free. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Retroarch (64bit version) which can emulate pretty much anything. It can be overly complicated for an emulation newcomer though.
Lemuroid is a great multisystem emulator. It's still in early development though and so has a few foibles.

You will need a bios which you can get here.
PPSSPP for PSP games (although a few games do have some issues)
Thank you u/Horando for the app list from here
I have retroarch set up to play: NES, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, GBA, Sega Megadrive, SNES, N64, Sega Mega CD, Sega 32x, Atari 2600, Atari Lynx, Neogeo Pocket Color, Sega Game Gear and MSX
You have to download the cores first but it's all done from the Retroarch menu interface. (Load core -> Download a Core ->...) (Also you use the B button to go back, the back button doesn't do anything on retroarch.)
These are my core recommendations:
For other systems I use standalone emulators:
Also I heavily recommend getting the DIG frontend to be able to launch the games quickly without having to deal with the clunky Retroarch frontend no more than necessary.
Hope this list is of any help.
No, PPSSPP strictly plays PSP games. So titles that were considered "PSX2PSP" or converted from ISO's won't play.
ePSXe, FPse, or Retro Arch with the PCSX ReARMed core are recommended for PS1 emulation.
I have a Droid Turbo and use a Moga Pro Power 2.
You will need a bios which you can get here.
PPSSPP for PSP games (although a few games do have some issues)
My go-to site fore emulators is Emuparadise, the site also recommends emulators for android if you were looking for other systems I just listed ones that I have used often.
You can get some emulators. If you don't mind old consoles like PS1, N64, SNES, NES, etc. you could get some emulators if you have an Android that is, but I'll include some recent consoles as well. It's also possible with iOS but I'm too lazy to search it up, forgive my laziness. :P Keep in mind you need to get the games as well, there are no included ones with the emulators afaik.
Anyway, here's a list of emulators I can think of atm (cough you can get the apk if you want so if the app has a paid version cough):
Console | Emulator | Google Play link |
---|---|---|
PS1 | ePSXe | *click!* |
PSP | PPSSPP | *click!* |
Nintendo DS | DraStic | *click!* |
SNES | Snes9x EX+ | *click!* |
GBA | MyBoy! | *click!* |
GB/C | My OldBoy! | *click!* |
Nintendo 64 | M64 emulator | *click!* |
NES | NES Emulator 64in1 | *click!* |
These are all I can think of. I have at least tried half of these on my old phone and they worked quite well, I didn't try them in my new phone yet. Have fun :) and if you need some game recommendations, feel free to ask!
Otherwise, there's Reddit as well. I personally use Relay, but stick with whichever you like the most. I also play some games like Final Fantasy Record Keeper, QuizUp (not really a game but still), etc.
EDIT: converted list into table & added some info at the bottom.
Oh jeez, don't recommend FPse, the sound emulation is terrible and it reports inaccurate framerates, showing 60/60 even during emulator slowdown.
Use ePSXe or Retroarch's PCSX-ReARMed core instead. (I personally use ePSXe. It's been great, and recently even added GTE and Subpixel precision, awesome features that reduce the pixel judder the PSX hardware was known for due to the lack of a z-buffer).
Also, iPega controllers are a solid buy, and unlike Moga, don't require any drivers, work as native HID devices. You can get one in the $25-30 range if you're in the US.
Here's some controller review links from the /r/EmulationOnAndroid wiki.

For Android you need to use ePSXe, is the only mobile emulator that can handle old mods like this one. For more recent mods you can use Duckstation, even though there is no longer android support, is the best emulator for Android available.
You will also need to find a BIOS file for the emulators, which can be easily found online, with several guides on how to do so.
After that, you will need to get access to a clean Final Fantasy Tactics ISO and a Patcher.
A clean ISO is a image from the game without any patches applied. It can be ripped from the CD using certain programs or found online.
If you have access to a PC, you can patch the game with Ppf-o-matic (available here) and transfer the ISO to your device. A tutorial for patching can be found here.
If not, you need to get UniPatcher and the apply the selected patch on a clean Final Fantasy Tactics USA ISO (a .bin file is also acceptable). Patching method should be fairly straightforward.
You need either of these tools to apply patches (which also answers what is ppf-o-matic I hope)

These are the ones I have on my phone, be aware that most of them are paid versions.
ePSXe: This is my Playstation emulator of choice. It's not the most feature rich PS1 emulator there is but it is very user friendly.
PPSSPP: The best PSP emulator there is in my opinion. User friendly but there are a lot of options available to tweak if you are so inclined. There is a free version that has all the same feature, the Gold version is for if you want to donate to the developer.
NES.emu: It's not the prettiest of emulators out there but it works great and I've become oddly more adept with the onscreen controls in Super Mario Bros than I am with physical ones. Many people mention input lag with the .emu line of emulators from Robert Broglia but in my experience if it is there then I'm not noticing it.
SNES9x EX+: A SNES emulator from Robert Broglia. This and the .emu line all use the same interface, so if you've used one then you'll know them all.
M64Plus FZ: This is a Nintendo 64 emulator that has a lot of different cores available, so you can try various ones to see which works best for each game, then set each one to use that on a per game basis. There is a paid version with more features.
Dolphin: A GameCube/Wii emulator. It does require that you have a reasonably powerful phone, a Snapdragon 835 or equivalent at the very least, but it does give good results. I just used the Play Store version but you can find a MMJ version which has more performance tweaking options, there are also other modded versions to try.
Pizza Boy: This is the Gameboy/Gameboy Color emulator I use the most because I love the animated skins.
Pizza Boy GBA: The Gameboy Advance version of the above. Has really nice skins for both landscape and Portrait.
DraStic: The best Nintendo DS emulator there is.
Citra: This is a 3DS emulator and it really does require a powerful phone to run. I have a Snapdragon 835 in mine and games are playable but you have to have a tolerance for frame rate dropping into the mid and low 20s.
MD.emu: This emulates the Genesis and Sega CD.
Yaba Sanshiro: This is the best Sega Saturn emulator on Android. It does have a few quirks, some games will work if you are using the built in bios but not if you are using a real one for example. You can even run music CD images when using a real bios, which is great as I love the Saturn's music CD interface.
Redream: This is a Sega Dreamcast emulator. I actually find the Reicast emulator to have better compatibility but it also seems very picky on what device it wants to work on. Redream however runs on everything I've tried it on.
MAME4Droid (0.139u1): This is for arcade games. There are other versions of MAME available but this is one I find to be the most compatible with available ROM sets.
Retroarch (64): I keep this installed for 32X emulation as it is currently the only option available for Android. Retroarch will allow you to run every other system I've mentioned but it isn't the most user friendly option there is.
Lemuroid: This is another multi-system emulator. It's still in development and so isn't as feature rich as other options but it is definitely worth keeping installed to see how it develops.
Hope this massive ramble is of some help.
I use ePSXe for the Playstation, I've just found it to be the most reliable.
For GBA I go between two. Pizza Boy GBA and My Boy! The first has a free version which is the one I've linked to but the latter does not. The Paid version of Pizza Boy GBA has nice animated skins.
If you are willing to put the time in to set it up then Retroarch is multi system emulator and also has a 64 bit version.
Lemuroid is another multisystem emulator which is a lot easier to use. It will currently only read Playstation games in the .iso format however. It is still in active development so it's definitely worth keeping an eye on.
ePSXe: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.epsxe.ePSXe
ClassicBoy: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.portableandroid.classicboyLite
Retroarch: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.retroarch
Retroarch 64: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.retroarch.aarch64
PPSSPP: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.ppsspp.ppsspp
Dolphin: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.dolphinemu.dolphinemu
A good choice if you are unfamiliar with emulation is Lemuroid, think of it as a simplified version of Retroarch. Unlike ClassicBoy it is still being actively worked on https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.swordfish.lemuroid The only problem with it is that PS1 games need to be in the .iso format.
For Android ASAP get psxe
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.epsxe.ePSXe
You will LOVE IT
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.epsxe.ePSXe
I get the games from emuparadise. You have to unzip them in another program or download the unzipper program attached the epsxe.
I use ePSXe
Here's a link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.epsxe.ePSXe
Thanks for your remind. I saw ePSXe use those commercial game's screenshot too. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.epsxe.ePSXe
ePSXe for Android, it's great value for the price or you can root it in. You'll also need the PSX BIOS which you are entitled to if you own/can borrow the console.
Install the emulator, copy the BIOS file (named SCPH1001.bin) to the bios folder inside the epsxe's folder and copy your legally yarrquired rom of Diablo I to somewhere you remember inside your device and you are set.
Yes, your ShieldTV should run everything flawlessly. You can find the full requirements and features here.
The emulator recognized my Dualshock 4 controller without any issues, I just had to adjust the settings (of the emulator) to use the d-pad instead of the analog stick, iirc.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.epsxe.ePSXe&hl=en - yes they fucking can
For as long as I can remember. For me this one worked better. All I did was upload whatever Game Rom I was interested in, and it played.
