If you're on Android, check out the app Better Settlers. You can automatically load random maps based on optimal, balanced, and fair layouts. We use this app every time we play to come up with a map layout.
There is this app Catan Assist, it generates board for you and you can just arrange yours accordingly. Thousands of random board and you don't have to think on board being one sided.

Another difference is the visuals. At first colonist.io just looks like a cruddy 2d board, and it took me a second to get used to the controls (trading, buying dev cards and seeing how many points everyone else has).
I do think the colonist is smoother and faster. They do have a weekly new map scheme, but they haven't put out expansions like Seafarers.
Play a bot game and see for yourself :)
They went out of business. Had some IP issues or something too I believe. There's like seven of their boards left on Amazon, but they're at $160 a piece:

The problem with an hourglass sand timer is that it cannot be instantly reset for the next player.
Edit: try free this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mitch3a.gametimer
Catan Universe gives you the experience of playing Catan imo. I've tried both and though Catan Universe has some bugs and has a lot it can improve on, it is definitely worth the $5 for base or $12 for Base, Seafarers and Cities, and Knights Expansions.
For me, colonist.io didn't really feel like playing Catan and the graphics were rather crude. Though colonist.io did prove to be much smoother and free.
You can get cheap hexagon disposable “bowls” on Amazon for super cheap! They’re actually like, the dishes used to measure chemicals in a laboratory. chemical weigh boats
~~They're not available anymore I believe, due to an IP dispute. I managed to get one during the kickstarter six years ago.~~
Found them on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Hexboard-Gaming-Board-Tile-Games/dp/B06Y28RLNL
I purchased some card holders to make grabbing resources easier. Might be a good gift with a backup set of cards. I personally use these:
https://www.amazon.com/Card-Tray-Organizer-Settlers-Catan/dp/B079GNCBCR
They are well made, snap together easily, and there are 2 3-slot trays, perfect for the 6 card stacks you make with resources and development cards. I actually purchased another set so we can either have 2 card holders on each side of the board to make reaching easier, or if we play the Cities and Knights expansion, we can have slots for the additional cards that that expansion adds.
If you are interested in purchasing an expansion, I would recommend that you purchase either Seafarers to add simple ocean exploration and a bigger map, or Cities and Knights, which adds much more depth and strategy, but is a little more challenging to get the hang of.
Just a reminder, if you are planning on playing an expansion like Seafarers with 5 to 6 players, you need 4 things: The base game, the 5-6 player base game extension, your expansion of choice, and the 5-6 player extension for your expansion of your choice.
Hope this helps!
The fact that the City is placed 2nd in the rules is very intentional. The 1st locations are far too advantaged if they were Cities instead of Settlements. The benefit for placing the 1st Cities even if placed after the Settlements can very well outweigh the 1st Settlement advantage.
If you are worried about the unfair advantages tile arrangement is very important. I recommend Better Settlers
A. There are a few apps that allow for better placement of tiles and numbers, I prefer Better settlers on android, but there are a few out there.
Didler as winder said I got them from thingiverse here is a link to my complete set painted https://imgur.com/gallery/zgnQQ. Melon thanks for the info, think we will use that set of rules from now on, seems to be the fairest way
Depending on what your doing, I love the fan expansion Catan: Seasons
Replaces the Catan event deck in Traders and Barbarians, and can be used with Cities and Knights.
It also has a few events in there that really help balance the game, in addition to balancing the dice rolls.
I can't really answer your question regarding Target specifically, but I found a lot of deals by following these forums/sub:
https://boardgamegeek.com/forum/10/boardgamegeek/hot-deals
http://www.reddit.com/r/Boardgamedeals/
Good luck!
Here are the details.
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/167573/catan-world-championship-berlin-2014-special
Essentially it works like the robber. Except if a 7 is rolled you resolve the robber actions, then anyone with a settlement or city on the Berlin Tiles gets a resource matching the tile the bear currently occupies.
Everyhing made here was laser cut. I have a laser at work at my disposal so I did it on my lunch breaks.
Here is a plan I based my box off of
And here are the plans I used for the tiles.
Cutting out the ports is a good idea. Maybe I'll make a second one some day.
if you have access to a 3D printer (school library) try some of the model from thingiverse. I recommend those by JAWong (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:26979)
I also made my own board holder using a sheet of mdf and some hexagonal tile spacers. Have fun with it, if it looks bad nothing a coat of spray paint wont fix :)
Well, if what you are saying is true, that is clearly in defiance of the rules. Or a bug
Also, colonist.io is a fan-made thing. If you wanted to use a video-game as an example, I would have went with Catan Universe (even if there was one instance of it counting Longest Road short, posted in this reddit somewhere).
That's what house rules are for. With that said on colonist.io you can see the bank and how many of each card type are available. I find this info very useful. If there are only 19 of each resource and the bank has 19 I dont have to waste time trying to trade. Furthermore if the bank has 18 of something only like 8 of something else its much easier to know your 1 rare resource could get you a nice 2/1 or maybe even a 3/1 if people are that desperate lol.
It should not be an official rule but I do like the idea!
https://www.geogebra.org/m/UsoH4eNl
Hit 100, see the results, then hit reset and 100 again. Do it 20 times and look how bad the dice results can be. Most games take 60-80 rolls so it can be even more skewed.
colonist.io is still better.
Is this the type of thing you’re looking for? I use those in the 2x3, 4x7, and 8x10 sizes, to keep the pieces separate for each scenario with the same box. I also have all my 5-6 player extensions and campaign scenarios in the same box as the expansion they go with (plus all my mini expansions are with T&B)
CATAN STRATEGY: A Complete Guide to Winning the Popular Board Game is not a bad read and has lots of great tips for beginner to intermediate players
A new version is out!!
> Catan 4.6.4.:
> Catan now supports Android 8 / Oreo! The team has updated the game for the latest Android release and added various smaller tweaks and optimizations in the process.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.exozet.android.catan
Can you be a bro and confirm it works so I can upgrade my phone to Oreo? Thanks bro!
Android user here & I've totally received more than $6 worth of enjoyment from the Catan app.
Sure the AI isn't all that tough to beat but, there's a little story, plenty of different scenarios which include Seafarers, along w/ C&K's too.
This is the link for the bag I use it works perfect. The example pics are even Catan in the case! 😂
My favorite expansion was the cities and knights, and is probably what I’d recommend first. It does make the game more complex though. Seafarers gives you more options for setting up your game board in unique ways.
My friend and his wife I play catan with bought me a carry case that has been very handy. I went from always having 3 full boxes in my car to fitting catan + seafarers + cities and knights in one case.
My experiences have been pretty much tied into the basic expansions but I’ve seen much cooler variations on this sub.
Amazon Brazil has them for R$109,87: https://www.amazon.com.br/CATAN-O-JOGO-DE-CARTAS/dp/B08WHP54SQ/ref=sr_1_5?__mk_pt_BR=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&crid=1H6KHEYODSTP&keywords=catan&qid=1663182354&s=toys&sprefix=catan%2Ctoys%2C196&sr=1-5&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.6121c6c4-c969-43ae-92f7-cc248fc6181d
Sorry if that's a high price; I don't even know the symbol for Real until ten seconds ago.
Totally unrelated question: is the Amazon name for the website offensive to people in Brazil? Sorry, but you're the only person I can ask this question to.
I use a mobile app called Catan Assist. It lets you generate regular 3-4 player maps, 5-6 player maps, and even 7-8 player maps. You can also generate various Seafarers maps and scenarios. Very useful app, I highly recommend it.
I would say that the exception there is incorrect. Most people play that you still get the resource. It previously explicitly stated so in the FAQ but I can't find it. Here is a page from boardgamegeek though where everyone agrees and others reference it being in the FAQ as well.
I don't speak German but google translates the important section to "If the commodity - taking is prevented because of the robbers on the field stands , the player may still take a resource card." I don't know why they didn't include the section in the english version of the rules but I think it safe to say the rules should be the same
There could be an argument that Aqueduct is after production, it could be argued that Aqueduct is takes place at the same time as production. I think the latter is correct, but I don't think that is clear in the rules.
It seems Colonist.io is set up to have Aqueduct take place during Production. It won't be possible to test this in Catan Universe since they use infinite resources, so perhaps I'll take this question to Catan Studio.
Get the Catan Assist app on your phone, it has an option to generate 8-player maps. Like Sebby said, one map is the Peanut shape map, and the other is a Big Island. The Big Island has 8x Forests, 8x Pastures, 8x Fields, 6x Hills, 6x Mountains, and 1x Desert. You play with a 13 hand limit, no special build phase.
Hey, it's a free market. You can choose to trade with those overseas, or with your immediate neighbours.
If this really bugs you so much, then play on colonist.io. That one forces you to trade with the bank if you try to offer in increments of 4 (or your best port).
Lot's of people are asking for that to be changed, though.
Available in the Catan Assistant App, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kosmos.catanassistant&hl=en_GB&gl=US not used the iOS version.
Took me some time to finalize everything, but Catan Master is finally available as public bèta on the Google Play Store.
You can install the public bèta through this link.
What can Catan Master do for you?
* Keep track of your regular Catan players
* Keep track of Catan game results including expansions
* Your personalized Catan leaderboard
* Show player statistics
* Export and import your data to keep it secure and backed up
* Unlock achievements and prizes (under development)
* More features to be added
All of this for free and without adds, tracking or need of an internet connection.
What can't Catan Master do?
* Play the actual game
* Board generation
* Dice simulation
For all these functions there are already excellent apps available.
Sadly there will be no iOS version as Apple charges an annual fee of $99 to publish apps on the App Store.
Feedback and suggestions are very welcome in this post or at
if you have access to a 3D printer I highly recommend these http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:26979

People organize them in the official one for instance. There are others too. I guess that players who end up organizing games this way will generally be more skilled.
Thanks for the quick reply and the advice! I understand price updates, sad I'm a little too late to get in at the 10USD price point :D. I will keep my eye out for someone hosting a public 5-6 player game. So far I only saw people hosting the basic 4 player game. Also is there any idea to remove to advertisements for the paying members? Feels a bit mweh to pay 20USD (or more if I want more expansions later on) and have 2 big banners next to the playing board. I read the software and your updates are really good.
But experience and design wise it feels a bit cheap with the banners. Feeling and design wise Catan Universe has a win, feels a bit more relaxed. The only host needs expansion is great and defiantly something that pushed me to look for alternatives and lead to me finding colonist.io. Thanks again for the reply and explanation for the pricing change!
As another user pointed out, there are ways around it. For instance I could say "I really want wheat", and player 2 could point to a card and say "this one is wheat", though the person who getting stolen from can also lie about what the card is. Having played in many tournaments, and having played many hundreds of games on Catan Universe and Colonist.io, giving a specific card to a player without drawing is not allowed in any of them.
as someone said, try Catan Universe or Colonist.io to get yourself familiar with the game and basic rules.

as for the length, if you're teaching them it will take aprox. 2 hours, if you are learning together maybe more for the first game. second one will probably go a lot smoother.

and remember the turn sequence:
and remember that you can play dev cards at any time during your turn (beneficial to play knight card before rolling dice in case you have a robber on one of your numbers)
I would suggest not only re-reading the rules, but also playing some on colonist.io online. Although it's not always perfect, they've got the basic rules pretty well worked out and after a couple games on there you should feel fairly confident in your knowledge of the rules.
I guess colonist.io might be good if you have friends you can play with... for me playing alone it kind of sucks. For starters, playing with strangers has a lot of issues... for one, they might not like if you play slow, and also there's the problem of OTHER people playing really slow
Playing with bots feels really unfair. The biggest issues are:
I dunno, some games feel like they are stacked against you. I'll have an 8 and 6 space and the game is rolling 5's and 9's what feels like every other turn, and of course the bots have a bunch of 5 and 9 spots and are getting 3-4 resources a roll, trading with each other for everything and I'm sitting there with nothing.
I've played colonist.io and catanuniverse. Both have pros and cons. Colonist is nice for quick games, pretty intuitive, easy to set up. CatanUniverse offers a lot more 'in depth' gaming experience, and once you have an account and you're used to everything, is pretty easy to play. However, it does take a ton of your RAM even if you're using a browser, but especially if you're using Steam.
Premium packs - they get you sweet features like 5-6 player map, fun maps, and more expansions based on which one you get. Check them all out here https://colonist.io/shop.html
Sasha here, I'm the community manager here at Colonist.io. Once you're ready to promote your tournament, let me know and I'll share it on our Discord in the #tournaments channel.
Yes, I should have mentioned colonist.io was our first choice. We started a game and about 5-10 minutes in, the server crashed. Colonist.io is FAR from perfect. It runs slow on Chrome for me, too slow to really play, but fine on Edge?????
Regardless, I paid the $9 to be able to do 5+ player and it's worked ok so far. Buggy, but tolerable. Little things like can't change your name sometimes.
But last night, when the server crashed and we couldn't get back into our game, nor start a new one, we were looking for other options and we went with Catan Universe. Waste of time and $.
It's sad. The interface seems pretty nice at the outside, albeit on even a large phone (Pixel 3XL) I really had to squint. But to have players with different boards, and unable to even complete one turn...just terrible.
It can be expensive based on location. But this site has been live since 2017 and profiting. Check out my post history, Catan employees actively hang out in this subreddit too.
Also read the bottom of this: https://colonist.io/presskit.html
Colonist.io is what I would recommend. The online version published by Catan Universe is pretty bad and I'm really not sure anything is being updated on it. I swapped to colonist about 4 months ago and it's been great. Further, it's updated frequently and the devs are also on this sub so sometimes if you have an issue they can help you address it directly.
My 2 favorites are Catan Universe and colonist.io.

Universe has a better layout and graphics and feel, but is buggy and people often time out, where as on colonist i've never had a problem, plus they are adding new things regularly.

Cheers.
Tabletop Simulator is probably the closest thing.
You could also start a custom room game with https://colonist.io/ and then take a screenshot and play on top of that image?
You only had 87 rolls... that distribution is in no way outside of what you would expect from fair dice.
Try clicking the "Roll 100" button on here a few times with a "Reset" inbetween.
https://www.geogebra.org/m/UsoH4eNl
Hit 100 and reset multiple times. You will see the stats.
Usually games are 50-70 rolls so it will be more random than that.
This is confirmation bias - You play more online so you are more likely to see bad distributions.
Catan is not a fair game. If you want something better, go to boardgamearena.com. Dozens of modern board games there.
https://www.geogebra.org/m/UsoH4eNl
Hit 100, see the results, hit refresh. Repeat 20 times. See how skewed randomness can be. Shit happens.
If someone told you to create a random set of 100 coin flip results... How many tails would you place in a row? 3? 4? There can be cases of 7-8 in a row and that is OK. Human mind is trying to go out of its way to make balance happen.
Catan Universe is horrible for so many other reasons. The dice results are not one of them. Although, there have been provable cases of the SAME sequence happening from time to time. 7-9-9-9-9-9-7 in the middle of the game. After that there are no 7s for a LONG time.
The best I have seen are from B&N and Target. Keep an eye on slickdeals, doesn't look like anything going on right now.
There aren't necessarily any special rules to playing Seafarers with Cities & Knights. Some maps might feel more balanced than the others, but you can generally try out any Seafarer map and combine it with C&K. I like to create my own maps, but when I want to create a map quickly, without much thinking, I use a smartphone app called Catan Assist. It's a nifty little app which lets you pick from a variety of Seafarer maps for 3-4 players, and 5-6 players. There's even two maps for 7-8 players, which I find quite amusing. It's a free app with a small banner for ads at the top of the screen which isn't very intrusive. Fiddle with the settings a bit and you'll see that it's a quite handy app for setting up a Catan map.
I like them.
May I suggest painting inside the holes that hold the number tokens (put a little putty to fill in the small dent created by the driller bit center) and using clear number tokens (similar to these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08VJ9H3DT/ref=twister_B08VJ966GN?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1) ?
Based on the pieces you're describing, is it safe to assume you have the newest version of the base game? If so, there are older versions of the game where the water tiles used to be separate pieces. There are extensions for both the new and older versions of Catan. If you have the newest version, dubbed 5th Edition, then go for this extension(Amazon has a sale right now):
https://www.amazon.com/Catan-Studios-CN3072-Extension-Player/dp/B00U26V9CU
If you have an older version, where the water tiles are separate pieces, then you'll have to do some digging to find what you need. Most likely, if you don't have 5th Edition, you'll have 4th. In that case, you'll have to go on eBay or whatever to find the proper set. Hope this helps.

This book was written by a multiple time championship winner. I haven’t read it yet, but it seems like one of the most condensed resources for strategy.
Not op, but it looks like a standard jewelry box. Could get one at Walmart or Target but I am pretty sure this is the one OP has

Not that it is what the OP is looking for but since you mention it - there is an Android app version of Better Settlers which, of course, doesn't suffer from the Flash problem.
Download a Catan app for your phone (like Catan Universe) and play games against the computers multiple times a day. If you can play five games a day for months, you'll learn to predict how a board will develop and resource shortages. You should still continue learning strategies, but there really isn't a substitute for real game experience and the only feasible way to get a lot of real game experience quickly is to play a lot against the computers in the app.
Here’s some more photos of the internals on imgur.
I actually found the box on Amazon, I live in the UK so I don’t know if you can find it or one similar elsewhere but here’s a link to the item I bought.
It’s a pretty good box, and it comes with a handle to carry it places! There’s probably room for the 5-6 player extensions too, although I’ve yet to find a 5th person to play with!
Sure! Here’s a link to the box I bought on Amazon (UK), I don’t know if you can find the same brand where you are? Or something similar.
And an imgur album for what the drawers look like!
I put the stuff in the box, that’s how I did it!
But really, it’s a cool little box. Here’s an imgur gallery for the insides and of course a link to the box on amazon (UK).
Hopefully you can find it or something similar! It also came in a kinda baby blue, but they didn’t have the size available so HOT PINK it is!
There's this company that sells em on Amazon.

If you're feeling creative, you can buy these blank tiles from Amazon for about $8: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MTV99HB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_YrwDDbVQ5MJG7
You could decorate them however you like, and either draw the numbers on or buy sperate blank tokens. As long as you have the pieces + cards, you could easily play a nice game with this.
Hi all, I was surprised this app didn't exist already so I took a bit of time and did it myself. It's my first app to be on Google Play and the link is below if you want to use it. I kept it quite simple and did all the artwork myself. its free and should be available in every country.
I am not trying to profit or promote any brand or anything, just sharing a tool others might find useful :)

We use Better Settlers, and it turns out great every time.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nut.bettersettlers
Before I found this app, the few times we played randomly the games all turned out very unbalanced. Now each game is super close right up to the end.
I discovered the Better Settlers app (Android) pretty quickly after getting the game.
It makes setting up the board way easier and introduces variety whilst keeping the board balanced. It also includes settings to vary the ports, the number of players and add expansions.
I believe similar features are available at the website of the same name.
Tried that once or twice, and had really terrible games every time. Since then I've always used Better Settlers - perfect (and random) game layout every time.

I got the tiles on Amazon. They aren't wooden, more of a dense, paper, cardboard material. Here's a link if anyone wants: Apostrophe Games 20 Large Blank... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MTV99HB?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I got it from Amazon ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07M9J78WK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ). I bought it for only $23 (prime) plus they are doing a 15% off coupon with it.
The whale is a game piece from "Survive." It comes with 4 or 5 whale pieces, and 4 Sea Monster pieces (which is actually why I bought it myself), and a few other cute meeples. I don't regret the purchase, as I love the pieces and enjoy Survive frequently as well.
I downloaded the Catan Classic App for my phone. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.exozet.android.catan
I usually just play me against two computer players. Those games go really fast (they usually finish in about 5-10 minutes) so it was easy for me to get a lot of experience very quickly. I also learned stuff like if I'm short on a resource, how badly it can screw me up or how sometimes making a road too long isn't great.
For android people who are super cheap and don't want to spend money, sign up for google rewards to get play store credit, then use that credit to buy the app.
If you have the android app, you can sign up for google opinion rewards, get google play credits using that, and then spend those credits on the maps. You won't be paying with your cash, but instead with your time and data.
Edit: In my experience, it takes about 2 months to get about $12 in credits.

I've gotta say that my fiance' and I recently got The Rivals For Catan, the two player card game built around Catan and we are having a lot of fun with it. It took two playthroughs to get the rules, but now we are expanding to the more advanced parts of the deck and really enjoying it. We were actually able to get a used copy on Amazon for like fifteen bucks so it's not too bad at all. Here's a link to the game on Amazon:
haha no worries. But you mean there was actually more than one copy? And it was Starfarers, not like the Star Trek version? Because it is going for more than $300 US on Amazon
I have an older edition that uses hexagonal port tiles rather than the new ports so the Plastic Catan Board doesn't work for me. I use blue drawer liner (cut into two strips).
Pros: Keeps tiles from moving. Folds/stores easily in box. Looks like the ocean. $4. And, just a personal preference, I like my tiles touching rather than having the road "moats" in between.
Cons: Doesn't help transport board. May not help your crack situation. Doesn't help spills. Doesn't help errant dice rolls. Slightly ghetto.
A circle table with a 5 to 6-foot diameter would be perfect. That way any number of people can sit around it and not be too far fromthe board. The board itself is about 2.5 feet all set up, so that leaves about 2+ feet around the edges for people to put their cards/pieces.
Something like this could work, but I'd obviously look for it at an actual store. No folding table is worth $384.
The Frenemies mini-expansion is cheap at $7 and changes the robber mechanic. Instead of moving the robber onto your hexes, they'll be moving it harmlessly to earn tokens.
Where on Earth did you manage to get Fishermen on Catan from? Its now out of print. All I see is it is impossible to buy except at exorbitant prices on Amazon.
Sorry if this hijacks your thread, but the Play Store says that Catan Universe is free. I also paid for Catan Classic, but that doesn't seem relevant.

Here's some relevant text:
> Play the basic board game in multi-player mode, and the introductory game of “Catan – The Duel” free of charge. You can also master the free “Arrival on Catan”, to permanently unlock the single player and custom match mode for the “Arrival on Catan” scenario, to play against the AI or with your friends.
> For even more variety, unlock the complete basic game, and the expansions “Cities & Knights” and “Seafarers” as in-app purchases, defend yourself against barbarian invasions, journey to new shores, and compete against cunning computer opponents.
If you have an android phone, you can install Google Opinion Rewards, take those surveys to get Google Play Store credits and then spend those credits to buy the Catan App. Note that it will take about a month to get $5 worth of Play store credit so you can afford the app.
A new version is out!!
