>I'd say that I would like to understand electricity at a fundamental level.
A widely-acclaimed intermediate-level E&M textbook is Griffiths. This book will take you as far as most physics undergraduates go, as far as understanding electromagnetism. But the rabbit hole goes down farther than you can imagine.
I really sympathize with your situation. I am also very sensitive to noise and find it extremely distracting.
Perhaps you've considered this before, but if your class records lectures, can you just watch it afterwards? That way you won't have to join live and show your face. If the only thing holding you back from doing that is stigma, don't let it, there's plenty of us (including myself) that just do that.
Also, have you looked into noise blocking options at all? I recently got a pair of Sony XM4s which have incredibly good Active Noise Cancelling, completely solved the issue of overhead footstep / across-the-house talking noise for me; they work better for lower frequencies / far-away sounds though so if someone is right next to you talking and you're not playing music you're still going to hear them. Another option is some good earmuffs which can be better for higher-frequency noise but not as good for lower-frequencies as ANC (the ones I have: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CPCHBCQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1).
Another option which is up to you whether you consider morally objectionable is to prerecord a video of yourself (or someone else? haha) and play it back during lecture. The way I would do it is by using OBS Studio's Virtual Camera feature and playing back a video using a Video Source.

I'm not sure how a VPN would help. EPL matches aren't blacked out in the U.S. I know that NordVPN is used by many that want to stream NHL games. We're in a spot where all the Islanders, Rangers, NJ Devils, Buffalo Sabres are all blacked out. I think also blacks out the Philadelphia Flyers here.
Unfortunately, $2712 for a year is a pretty good deal for insurance. Comes out to just about $226 a month. You may be able to find something slightly cheaper through the state healthcare exchange(if your state has an exchange). However, I think its probably unlikely you're going to be able to find health care that meets Cornell's expectations for less than $226 a month. To give you an idea, I paid $200 a month and my employer paid $600 a month for care that was only slightly better than Cornell's plan at my last job (I'm a graduate student so employed before coming to Cornell). While I worked freelance I was able to find insurance for $160 a month through the state healthcare exchange, however that was only "catastrophic" coverage in case I got hit by a car or something and wouldn't meet Cornell's requirements.
Also, unfortunately, I'm not sure you'd be eligible to enroll in a new healthcare plan until the open enrollment period in December. Every year in December people are allowed to change their insurance, this is called "open enrollment" and after that you're pretty much stuck with your plan for the year. There are some life qualifying events like losing insurance provided through a job if you left your job, or signing up for new insurance with a new employer (or new insurance through a School like Cornell) which you can do at anytime, but without one of those life qualifying events you can't just enroll in a new insurance plan at anytime unfortunately. Edit: Good news, It does look like moving for school counts, so you may be able to sign up.
tbf you could fly into syracuse, but i think a lot of freshman fly to ith for their first time
Fur coats and straw hats are all the rage in the Ivy League these days.
ETA: Seriously though, search Pinterest for "ivy league clothes" or "prep clothes" then replicate that style with whatever stores are reasonably priced in your area.

AutoCAD - needs max single thread performance, good amount of ram, discrete gpu.
Acer Nitro 5 is a good choice, excellent single thread performance, 16 GB of RAM, RTX 2060 (probably more than you need), and 512 GB ssd. Only downside is it looks like a gaming laptop, because it is a gaming laptop.
well that's because you're using san jose as a starting point lmao. it'd be just as expensive from oakland or any other regional airport. im from the bay area and don't know anyone who didn't fly out of SFO to get to campus - it makes way more sense considering layovers/connection times/cost.
SFO --> DTW --> ITH (a pretty ideal route) was usually $300-$350 one way at most, and prices appear to be the same for move-in with an additional stop. it's even cheaper if you're willing to risk AA and their policy of allowing middle seats (edit: $115!!) aggravating but not nearly as bad as described
Shameless plug for my Dragon Day at Cornell University group on Flickr. It has dragon day photos going back to the 1980's. If you are a Flickr member, please contribute your Dragon Day photos to the group (from any year).

> Not to mention, it's pretty hard to get a halfway decent deal on a flight when you have next to no advance notice.
To put a number on this, lets say that I want to fly into Ithaca airport from... oh, I don't know, Austin Texas. If I'm booking a flight a month out, I can my flight for eighty-four dollars. That's pretty good! Now, let's say that I don't have good information on when and how I'm supposed to get in, so I need to book a flight half a month in advance instead of a month in advance. Suddenly, the price shoots up to a whopping four hundred thirty-four dollars!. We're talking literally four to five times the price to book a flight on short notice.
I use Notion and this template I found on Youtube works really well for me. It's basically a masterlist for all things such as assignments, hws, quizzes, exams, etc. It also can be automatically converted to a calendar and filtered based on class as well. (if you click on all and see all the options).
If you click on Duplicate on the top right corner you can make a copy of that template to use for yourself.

Adding on, because I learned this the hard way - the panoramas are .mov files but aren't actual videos, so you'll need some application to open the files with. I used this.
Surplus Cornell equipment that individuals can purchase will show up at the Public Auction site linked from this page: "ReUSE | Facilities and Campus Services" https://fcs.cornell.edu/departments/facilities-management/r5-operations/reuse
There's usually a lag after they receive materials because it's usually offered for Cornell department use first.
You can also check out the Ithaca Freecycle group or try Craigslist. "Freecycle: Ithaca Group" https://www.freecycle.org/town/IthacaNY
Follow the link at the bottom of this page to verify your student affiliation and obtain the one-year license,
In all honesty, during my four years at Cornell, I have torrented loads of movies, tv shows, and books via eduroam’s secure network without a VPN and have never gotten a warning. I admit, this was pretty risky, so I do recommend getting a VPN (I’m subscribed to NordVPN now). However if you are going to torrent without one, if you do it via any public network, you will most likely get a warning. Make sure you are at least using eduroam.
Also, I’ve streamed content (I don’t think I paid attention to the network) and have never gotten any warnings.
To be honest, any VPN you use is going to be shut down periodically if you are in China long enough. The most popular VPNs for China are Strong VPN, Astrill, and Vyper. If they are shut down, they are update the servers quickly so that you are not inconvenienced for too long. I personally recommend Astrill, as I've had issues with the other two.
Free version of CyberGhost. It's not great because it kicks you off after 3 hours, so you can't really leave your computer alone to download all day, but it's good for getting a couple movies or something.
As far as vocabulary is concerned, if you are open to side resources, you could try apps like the Beginner Cantonese to learn on your own some of the basic Cantonese words and phrases from scratch at your own convenience.

FYI, you can run Windows on a Mac for free using Oracle VirtualBox. It's not the ideal situation if you are frequently using Windows-only apps. But if you prefer Macs, or own one already, this would be a solution if you occasionally need to run a Windows app on a Mac.
VirtualBox basically runs in its own window, and windows apps run on top of that. You don't need to reboot the machine or anything, just launch VirtualBox like any other app.
I know this post is 5 days old, but I wanted to add - I LOVE f.lux: https://justgetflux.com/. I find it better than the built-in blue light filter thing on Windows (easier to access/control). I just leave it on all the time now. If I ever go back to the "normal" setting it burns my eyes and feels like I'm staring into a flashlight. I only turn it off briefly if I need to adjust colors in Photoshop or something.
You can get a two pack of these on amazon:
100% effective on every bug you hit. Been using them for years. Cleanup can be annoying though.
You can get a cheaper alternative off Amazon like the Logitech Crayon
Do you mean psychiatry? Maybe not the whole psychology field. There is an interesting book about this issue: On the Heels of Ignorance: Psychiatry and the Politics of Not Knowing. https://www.amazon.com/Heels-Ignorance-Psychiatry-Politics-Knowing-ebook/dp/B07QDC5HB7
Incredibly, but you can prepare for most of them over breaks. Highly recommend completing this if you pursue any Dyson classes.

Probably a dumb question, but when the email says to "Take a rapid antigen test 24 hours before you leave for Ithaca and upload results to the Daily Check", that includes the home tests like this right?
I saw some rapid antigen tests where you have to send it to a lab or have to go to a testing site, so I wasn't sure
If you don't usually get paid in cash (i.e. you don't need to deposit a lot of cash), you could think about Schwab's checking or saving accounts. Higher interest than most banks, free checking, no account minimums, free ATM withdrawals worldwide, you can get an associated credit card through American Express. I have accounts with BofA and Schwab, and Schwab is by far the better deal. Once you graduate, BofA will start to charge you fees for account minimums, etc. https://www.schwab.com/bank
would highly recommend privacy.com, it generates disposable debit cards from your bank account to use online instead of your real credit card info. if you use this referral link, then we'll both get $5
Ah no. So here in India, I have a subscription to a streaming service that let's me watch Premier League games. I'll need a VPN to be able to watch them from the US. Unfortunately, just this week, the service blocked NordVPN. I'll have to look at alternatives.
psychiatry in general is still a mystery. This book explains it well why issues related to mental health care are complicated to address. https://www.amazon.com/Heels-Ignorance-Psychiatry-Politics-Knowing-ebook/dp/B07QDC5HB7
Absolutely.
First you've got to protect your sleep for yourself. This means starting a nighttime routine that you follow every night.
Stop looking at screens for at least an hour before you go to bed. If you can't manage that (I can't) at least put your devices in night mode or download f.lux for your computer.
Don't drink anything with caffeine in it too late in the day (like after 3pm).
Download the Calm app that Cornell just invested in so we could use it for free. It's got some guided meditations for sleep (some as short as 5 minutes) as well as bedtime stories read by famous soothing voices.
If none of this is working or you're falling asleep but can't stay asleep all night, go to Cornell Health and make an appointment to get something to help you sleep. They will ask you if you are doing these things first, though-- so definitely try them for a week or so before setting that up.
Fun fact: The reason the clock tower plays "O Tannenbaum" is because we've had a rough year

I'm in Ithaca and I work with elm, a purely functional language that compiles to JavaScript for building web apps. Elm is heavily inspired by Haskell, so I'm curious about Haskell too. I'm down to meet you folks if you are still meeting up or interested in same.
Pretty interesting. Cornell's increase/change isn't as dramatic though it seems. Check it brown's - less research, more ug focused with no grad school - https://www.trafiklite.com/brown.edu. 700% increase.
If your interested in learning about the problem of statistics in partisan media (and I'm using that term because it can be/is exploited by both sides of the political spectrum) then read this article. I personally try and stick to media sources that fall in the middle of this chart of political leanings.
Outside of politics, the field of psychology is currently going through a "replication crisis". Many of their foundational studies can't be reproduced by current researchers. It wasn't because people committed fraud or didn't use hard data. It's because of subtle problems like selection bias, small sample size, and misuse of statistical measures of confidence. Statistics is challenging even when people having formal training to use it correctly.
I literally just ordered a used Lenovo stylus from Amazon last week. It just arrived yesterday and works BEAUTIFULLY, palm rejection and everything, and doesn't have cosmetic damage either. Best of all, it was less than $20.

Earplugs. Something like these. Trust me. I tried to just muscle through and hope the noise is just a one-time thing, but I caved one night, ordered some on the spot, and do not regret it in the least. They won't help now but you'll feel better knowing you'll have restful nights on the way.
A co-op just isn't the same as a Fraternity or a Sorority. Greek houses offer unique histories, well-established alumni networks, and many many leadership roles. I like the idea of leaving a legacy at Cornell and I feel I do so with my house. They are already co-ops at Cornell for those who want it, but for many, the rich history and fraternal bonds of a fraternity are a better option. Additionally, my fraternity could not convert into a coop. Our house is owned by Cornell and our agreements with the national fraternity and Cornell would not allow that.
Co-ops themselves have their issues at Cornell and can be just as exclusionary as fraternities, if not more in some cases. The applications for them can be competitve and usually members of co-ops by design have similar interests. While many people can enjoy that, its simply just not for me.
To your point about culture, knowing the alumni in our house going back many years I can confidently same our house's culture has remained very consistent throughout the years. Obviously things change, but its not hard to keep a houses cultural mostly consistent throughout the years. Look at houses like DTD, they have remained consistent in their image through many years at Cornell as have houses like PKT (which you can actually read a book about!)
Oh, and they also make ones that have built-in alarm clocks that wake you up by gradually increases the light level, for example, https://www.amazon.com/Sunrise-Sleepers-Simulation-Nightlight-Daylight/dp/B081CHLF46/. I can't vouch for this one specifically so I would do some research before making a purchase. This one is on the inexpensive side from what I've seen, but it could be that splurging on a $200 would get you the features you need. And if you have a diagnosis of SAD (I would talk to your doctor) it's possible that insurance would cover one. I know the Cornell Drugstore in the health center carries a particular brand of daylight lamp, but I don't know the details.
I highly recommend a "sunlight lamp." This one or something similar https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K08ZDBI/. They make a seriously BIG difference for winter blues, in my experience. You basically can sit with them shining in your face while you do other things, and it's sort of like sitting in the sun. I have one that I leave on all day while I work from home.
Building Services is supposed to supply the chalk for the learning suites, so I'm not sure what they'ree using. When we supplied the chalk, it was https://www.amazon.com/Hygieia-Chalkboard-Sticks-12-Pack-31144/dp/B004LCJ450.
What kind of laptop?
Most likely you can replace the battery with one that has more capacity. You can also use a power bank to charge your laptop. Try searching for laptop power banks on amazon. It'll be easier if your laptop uses USB-C charging and you get a power bank with USB-C Power Delivery.
This one looks pretty good and is pretty universal.
Bought this Tommy parka a few weeks ago. Used this bad boy a few times already and I love it. You can find other good ones on Amazon as well (make sure they're prime products because those are usually verified).
If you have android, here is a mostly free Ti-84 app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=scientific.graphing.calculator.t84.t36.t83
The free version is all I've ever needed in college for homework. I'd highly recommend a scientific calculator for engineering exams.
Spectrum sucks a lot. That said, are you using a Spectrum-provided router? Because we discovered that upgrading our router to a newer one made a HUGE difference in wifi speed and reliability (I live in an apartment downtown with my husband and we pay for our own internet, fyi -- obviously don't know your specific situation). But if you buy your own wifi router it might improve things. We have this one, https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-AC2300-Smart-WiFi-Router/dp/B06XZ3S6B8 (got ours from Best Buy, though) and it works really well.
I used these. One for the fridge and one for the freezer. Never had any issues with people stealing my food.

I'm in a gothic and there's no Ethernet. USB WiFi adapters are a thing. Amazon delivery is ~1 week because of Labor Day so I was just trying to get one quicker.
I'm going to China next week. From browsing around, looks like ExpressVPN is reliable (some people say it's owned by the Chinese government). Also heard good things about . Last year I had Digital Ocean credit so I used Streisand: Shadowsocks, AnyConnect, and OpenVPN+Stunnel all worked. Apparently now the Chinese government is cracking down on this stuff so some people have had issues with Shadowsocks.
You should check out NrdVPN & PureVPN. I've tried both, and they're really good. NrdVPN has the best reviews on the web, but PureVPN has an amazing promotion going on now - $29 for a 1-year subscription.
I already got the homework code. I'm just concerned with whether or not the version of the textbook I found on amazon (https://www.amazon.com/General-Chemistry-Donald-McQuarrie/dp/1891389602/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1502422218&sr=8-1&keywords=general+chemistry+mcquarrie) is significantly different from the cornell custom version on blackboard.
