Reading Hogwarts Battle School - an awesome story in both action and characterization that I'd deferred reading until recently because it was over-hyped. I have a defiance-of-expectations thing. It's a real problem for me in many ways.
Writing Holly Polter - yet another opportunity for me to write about sex, opinions on canon, insights into life and the occasional attempt at an emotionally-charged scene. Almost has a working plot now, which is good since I'm over a third of the way through the alphabet.
Ignore u/HollowBetrayer, who deserves no cookies and possibly a time-out.
The obvious next stories for your cousin are the Alexandra Quick series by Inverarity, who also wrote Hogwarts Houses Divided.
It's likely because of the Ootp film. She mentions it when we first meet her, and then again as her last line. Subsequently, it probably went the same way as Dumbledore + lemon drops and Lupin + chocolate. (What is it with this fandom and food? We even bloody ship it with people.)
I have a bit of a theory on this.
JKR said in an interview with Daniel Radcliffe that at one point she was so frustrated with writing GoF and OOtP that she seriously thought about killing Ron in the final book. I think Ron's baffling behaviour in GoF is a remnant of her decision to get rid of him.
For whatever reason she got cold feet and changed her mind. A major rewrite of several key plot points would explain the very long gap between GoF and OOtP's publication dates.
The quotes in this interview (from the DH part 2 DVD) seem to support her more recent comments that, "For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron."
See the collected works (77 so far) of Northumbrian.
The author only does canon-compatible stories, and they are well worth a look. As it says in his profile, "I appear to be writing several stories. In fact, I’m only writing one."
The Snape Chronicles is an excellent story. I highly recommend it.
From the author's summary - "This is a biography of Severus Snape from his birth until his death. It is canon-compatible, and it is Snape's point of view."
Although, I don't feel that summary does the work justice. This fanfic is a beautifully vivid look into what Snape's life must have been like. It is extremely canon-compatible, a fact of which I'm dearly fond. Essentially, it is Snape's life from birth until death, like the books were written from Snape's point of view - except that it starts far before Harry is born. Naturally, the author took some liberties with his childhood, since we don't know much from JKR about his childhood, but it is well written. I would go as far to say that this story becomes Snape's canon childhood for me. This is a wonderful, wonderful piece of literature. I laughed and cried, and learned more than I ever knew there was to know about Snape.
It is completed.

We have the testimony of Harry, but witnesses can be notoriously unreliable, especially when they have only part of the story. This is a biography of Severus Snape from his birth until his death. It is canon-compatible, and it is Snape's point of view.

Harry is trained by the Ministry's best- the Unspeakables, Field division. Plenty of well-tempered fights both in training and in practice. Suffers from its age a little (e.g.: references to magical cores and power ratings), but this is one of the fics that made the concepts meme-worthy.

I would like some more as well! The stories I see usually just have them as a side-plot, but I would love to see something more interesting. Here are two pretty decent Harry/Ginny writers: Northumbrian and little0bird.
Well, it was mentioned in Nightmares of Futures Past that Mad-Eye Moody led a last stand to protect Azkaban from Voldemort, killing all the Death Eaters they had imprisoned rather than allow them to join Voldemort's forces.

I went looking to see if more stuff was available in book form and stumbled onto a Jayne/River fic on literotica. Searching for more brought me to Browncoat, Green eyes which is a crossover to HP. This story was much better than most of the Firefly fanfic, and I reasoned out that ~300,000 fics for the fandom would give better odds of finding good stories than ~2,300.
A Different Fate by lordhellebore >JKR portrays Harry as completely unaffected by the Avada Kedavra cast at him. But how would things have gone if it had been different?
"In a more realistic version of the Potter world, if Harry was a girl and she ended up in the Little Hangleton graveyard... they'd rape her. So, how do I make a version of Girl!Harry that won't be emotionally destroyed by that?"
... which became something much weirder.

It's a shame about Harry x Luna. It's easily my favorite ship, but Luna is by far the hardest character in the series to write. Especially when writing her in a romance, you need to keep the spirit of her character alive, keeping her mature enough to make the romance not feel creepy on Harry's end, and weird enough that you don't start to go to far into "Luna flake" territory. I like Bungle in the Jungle and the sequel, but flake Luna tends to feel like a copout.
I don't have any recommendations, just felt like sharing my thoughts.
Its called We Were the Potters its without a doubt one of my favorite one shots, I really wish there was a fully fledged story on this premise. linkao3(287028)
That...I was going to ask for something like this yesterday.
I'm actually working on a concept where Peter was the Secret Keeper and did reveal the secret (to save his own life), but he honestly believed that they had a second line of defense, guarded by Sirius.
It'd be a point-of-divergence start-of-a-fic at the end of Prisoner of Azkaban, in the Shrieking Shack, where Sirius reveals the true course of events, Peter reveals what he thinks what happened, and whoever tried to kill them both 12 years ago (and blew up 12 muggles in the process) has another attempt.
It's kind of funny how Peter's actions (betrayal) lead to one of the most valuable things in the Voldemort war (a 15 year or so armistice), though. I think there's some biblical metaphor there?
https://archiveofourown.org/works/4308630
Peter's not really relevant in this one-shot, but it features a Voldemort who survived after Potter & Longbottom, so you might be interested in it.

This story is hilarious. It's Marauders era (mainly Remus x OC, but also Sirius x OC, and some Lily). It's not very canon, it probably could be considered a crackfic. But it's so so funny, and the main character is this super badass Ravenclaw and everything. It's pretty long and also completed, which are both bonuses.

Has the merits of being a complete story (and I mean that both ways), includes enjoyable and diverse erotic scenes and that this Harry isn't contemptuous of his concubines. On the negative, it has the common harem trope of many witches cooperating in ways you can only find in fanfiction (or some manga, I'm told).

The language is anachronistic, it's a bit off in the modern perspectives, but I think it's just fun. Judith is a witch bounty hunter being dragged into a task that may have more impact on English rule than anyone expects.

The problem with most time travel fanfiction is that the time traveler often has too much knowledge. They have a huge advantage, and it's too predictable.
That doesn't happen in BWP, in fact shit really hits the fan at times, especially in the later chapters, and the sequel.
Also, events often play out very differently. At first they try to stick to the original timeline as closely as possible, to prevent a ripple effect, but that doesn't work out so well, especially after Voldemort's resurrection.

I have used Calibre with with FanFicFare plugin (previously FFDL) for years because I read fanfics on e-reader. Really recommend to anyone, even if you don't read on e-reader. Helps with keeping track of what you have read, what was good, what bad, personal tags, series and a lot more.
If you don't have (or want) an Amazon account, like me:
1) Download and install Calibre
Calibre is a powerful e-reader management suite.
2) Go to http://ficsave.xyz/
3) Paste the url of the fic you want to save. The site will convert and prepare it for download in the format you choose - I use epub.
4) Connect your kindle to the computer and open calibre. The main screen will show your library.
5) Click add e-books button. Navigate to the folder you saved your fics from ficsave. After a bit they will be added to your library.
6)Simply right click on the newly added ebook fanfic in the main screen and click send to device. If it asks for an autoconvert, press yes.

I you have an android phone, check out Reddit Is Fun. Been using it since about 2014, and it shows this post's tag alongside being generally awesome.
You're going to have a very difficult time writing a story if you don't have it planned out enough to be able to differentiate between chapters.
Also twenty pages, assuming word processing with standard formatting, is around 10,000 words. The first Harry Potter book is 75,000 words. Do you think what you have is equal to fifteen percent of a book? But, as a whole, word count is typically more efficient of a judge of length than page count. Especially because some people seem to insist on typing in size twenty green font, double spaced, and in Arial.
Also, it's impossible to actually 'beta' something in any meaningful way without knowing the plot and intention of the author. Without knowing what's supposed to be there, they can't tell you if it's there or not. For example, I think Severus Snape is a terrible human being. So if I'm reading it with no thought of what you want to do, I'm going to ask you questions like, "How do you justify the fact that he's intentionally failing a student by maliciously vanishing his classwork repeatedly and expect me to sympathize for him?"
Also if you say 'does it flow well?' and then admit to knowing there's comma issues, well, the chances are that it does not flow well. It's not a beta's job to teach you grammar. That's your job. There's plenty of free resources available (Strunk and White's The Elements of Style is slightly dated, but available for free and in PDF form on the internet).
If you want someone to read it and go "OMG THIS IS AWESOME" then well, not it. If you want someone to read it, dissect it, and put as much red on the page as you do black, I'll give it a shot.
This one has it as well, but this is the third in a trilogy (a fantastic one once you get into it)

The other two recommended so far are great as well, I'd also like recs like these.
I think I'm pretty accurate in describing pudding as "a cheap kid's snack" or "retiree's snack," (something that is served in an "old folks home" because dentures and pudding requires no chewing) but I'm not sure if I speak for all Americans. I suppose recipes exist out there for pudding that is quite delicious, but I've only ever seen it served in Snack Packs. Or it sometimes comes in large cans that are dumped out into serving bowls (for like, cafeteria at school). Also the make-it-at-home packs by Kraft that I linked in my parent comment...but again, pretty sure the target audience is kids.
~~Also.....I'm fairly certain you cleared up a long-held question I've had about Edmund of Chronicles of Narnia and his favorite dessert.~~ Edit. Nope, that was Turkish Delight. Whatever that is. Not Angel Delight.
These two are really good. PotDK is ridiculously good and very different with Voldemort having won the original war because he was never killed due to Harry's parents going to Germany and it builds on that with one of the best Voldemorts, some really well developed relationships, amazing world building, and and a good deal of mystical elements which stem from Paganism and such. Magics of the Arcane has Dumbledore serve as Harry's mentor and adds in ancient magic and world building for places outside of Britain, it's less AU but it is different.
linkffn(http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3766574/1/Prince-of-the-Dark-Kingdom) linkffn(http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8303194/1/Magics-of-the-Arcane)
Been reading fanfiction since ~ 2006. Originally stumbled into a Firefly story on literotica about Jayne and River having a physical relationship despite every other crew members' recommendation. Read some more Firefly fics but there weren't many that told an actual story; I think that's when I found Browncoat, Green Eyes.
First- this is a really good question.
Second- it really should be easy but most people can't tell what a good conclusion should look like. Your 'paired off and lived happily' ending is fine for a romance that starts with 'main character was lost, alone and felt doomed'. The beginning conditions should echo the ending state.
There are a couple stories out there that I feel get undeserved flack for not being complete even though they are. For example- lorddwar's Harry/Tonks classic 'HP and the Summer of Change' starts with Harry grieving the death of Sirius, trying to find a way to fight his enemies and know more about what he can do with magic. He yearns to dump his childlike innocence and get into the game as it were. He's also seeking revenge against Bellatrix Lestrange. Suffice to say, all these issues get resolved by the end of that summer. I've seen people complain 'He never finished the story- Voldemort is still out there and he hasn't confronted Dumbledore or anything'; defeating Voldemort or confronting Dumbledore wasn't torquing him up, though. The story stands well where it stopped.
What initially came to mind (aside from my own works) was Heart's Home by Aealket

Mine by Gillian Anderson, which has several sequels. >Against his better judgement Severus Snape let a part of himself be used in a spell six years earlier. Now the consequences of his actions cannot be avoided any longer and Snape finds himself the father of a five year old boy—Harry Potter!
One I know of, though I'm sure there must be others:
POST DEATHLY HALLOWS! Femslash. HermioneLuna. Little by little, in her own unusual way, Luna Lovegood begins to romance Hermione Granger.

Harry is so powerful that it should qualify as crackfic (usually he is more competent/powerful/intelligent than professors - see first transfiguration lesson for extreme example)
>Minerva had been a transfiguration prodigy and now held a mastery in the subject, an eleven year old goblin-trained wizard had just totally destroyed everything she held to be true. She was a powerful witch but couldn't even contemplate repeating the feat this boy just achieved when she was the same age. It wasn't just that though, Harry Crow just threw the transfiguration rulebook out the window. Where the hell did they go from here?

>PART I: Days before his 6th year, Harry Potter is sucked into another universe by forces not of this world. Dazed and confused, Harry finds himself in a world where his parents are alive, where Voldemort has never fallen and he is Voldemort's key enforcer.
Harry is transported into another evil!Harry, which explains how he suddenly becomes much stronger. It's one of my favorite HP fics. Downside is that it was supposed to be a trilogy and it was abandoned during the second part, but the first part is finished and it can be read on it's own.
I must recommend Dumbledore's Army and The Year of Darkness on fanfiction.net. It takes place during Deathly Hallows while Ron, Harry and Hermione are away from Hogwarts. When I read it, I really felt like it could have really taken place, and I have always wanted to know what happened at Hogwarts while they trio was away.
I think this would be a great step into fan fiction because it is very close to canon and is really well written.
Hmm. Harry Potter and the Boy Who Lived fits most of your requirements. Harry isn't the BWL, but his twin brother is, and his twin is effectively Canon!Harry. Note that the author has stopped updating on FFN, and that a lot of updates are on the Darklordpotter WbA section.
The only fic I can think of that does interactions with muggles well is Incorruptible: The Dementor's Stigma by Matt Silver. But it's an AU set in zombie apocalypse, and I don't think that's really what you're looking for. Although, it is one of the best fics you'll ever read, so you can look at that if you want.
It's a tall order...
linkffn(Seventh Horcrux by Emerald Ashes) counts, kinda.
linkao3(https://archiveofourown.org/works/682335) is a one-shot that has Hermione taking over the world, though it's pretty mediocre and has some unintentional bashing. At the same time, it has this amazing line: [It was so blindingly obvious, in retrospect, that it stunned her that she had not seen it immediately after the final demise of Voldemort. What had Dumbledore left them? Ronald had been given an indulgence to save him from his own misguided behavior, Harry had been given a relic to encourage his martyrdom, and she - she had been given Dumbledore's own youthful inspiration. Clearly, he had meant her to succeed where he had failed.](/spoiler)
I don't, but I just want to comment about how much Starship Hedwig creeped me out. I really liked Island of Fire though; I wish there was more!

I was really interested in this, so I did a search, and it looks like it may have been Ten Kisses by freak.on.a.leash.13, which doesn't appear to exist anymore
what I found appears to be a French translation on fanfic.net https://www.fanfiction.net/s/4422677/1/Ten-Kisses
And a version someone split up and transfered to Wattpadd http://www.wattpad.com/259223?m=1
I hope this helps!
I'm taking this as confusion about the meaning of "nothing to sneeze at", so here you go:
"something that deserves serious attention, esp. an amount of money"

Mind's Eye, Soul's Reflection - OotP from Luna's perspective.
The Very Secret Diary - CoS; diary exchanges between Ginny and Tom.
I recently completed the Denarian series by Shezza which was excellent. linkffn(http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3473224/1/The-Denarian-Renegade)
Other than that I've read a fic or so, but I'm still trying to find something that meets my standards.
I prefer stories that don't focus too much on romance yet pull it off well. Romance stories on their own tend to have pretty annoying drama and leave everything else as an after-thought. I wouldn't say I particularly prefer a certain ship, but Harry/Luna particularly amuses me when it's pulled off (which is like never) and Hermione is nice too (but I see a lot of crap fics with her as the main pairing).
As for a decent Fleur story. This one is pretty good. The romance hasn't been developed entirely, but it's still updating I think and everything else is pretty good too. linkffn(http://www.fanfiction.net/s/10758358/1/What-You-Leave-Behind)
Im incredibly partial to this Game of Thrones Crossover:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/602693
Incredibly short, and unfinished regrettably. But the premise was so interesting, i really wish it hadn’t been abandoned
I'd recommend starting by familiarizing yourself with D&D magic rules. In D&D, wizards, witches, and sorcerers are all separate classes and use magic slightly differently. There's also the mechanics of divine vs. arcane magic and prepared vs. spontaneous spellcasters. Which class your character is will majorly affect how they interact with the Harry Potter world. You might also want to consider which edition of D&D your crossover character comes from. 3.5, Pathfinder, and 5th editions are the most popular, I believe, but the spell system in 4th edition may be the closest to Harry Potter. Pathfinder rules are available for free online with no downloads here. Getting a feel for how other authors describe magic in a D&D setting would also be helpful, even though you want to bring a D&D character into the Harry Potter universe. The magic works fundamentally differently in D&D, and different classes acquire magic in different ways. Finally, here is a link to my WIP campaign novelization-style fic which involves Harry Potter characters playing through the Temple of Elemental Evil campaign. It's not quite what you are thinking of writing, but it might help you get some ideas for how to describe D&D magic.
There's Antosha's Back to the Garden (Harry/Ginny/Luna) and other stories with the same pairing. Register to read.
Praying to the Stars - linkffn(5888864) - Harry/Ginny/Hermione. An angsty post-war story, dealing with grief from Ron's death.

There's a Draco/Neville/Lily Luna series on ao3. This is the first one - https://archiveofourown.org/works/514016. Locked to the archive, register to read.
Harry/Ron/Hermione - linkao3(4815533)
Harry/Daphne/Pansy - linkao3(3585918)
This one's a plotty Draco/Blaise/Ginny. Rather average. linkffn(6174720)
>Why do people write sex slaves?
Why do people write anything? Because they get off on it, one way or another.
> God its disgusting to read
Then... don't?
> And do they really think Dumbledore will let him get away it?
I don't think a fictional character's hypothetical counter-actions would stop anyone from writing about their preferred fetish(es).
>Seriously If i ever hear the word Master again

Voldemort has launched an all out war on the Wizarding World, and has taken the Boy Who Lived. But he has not reckoned on the resourcefulness of Hermione Granger. HHr developing in a sort of postapocalyptic environment.

Memorium by Aesop
The use of memory altering spells is common in the HP books. Protecting their secrecy comes before everything else, and justifies any action. Or so they believe.

A truly excellent muggle's-eye-view of how the Wizarding world takes care of its own. Occurs mid-4th book (I think) but only cursorily relates to the events in canon.
'Tis a watery request. My instinct here is to use the FFnet filters and try out different girls to play Oxygen to the twins' Hydrogen.
Like so (Hermione version).
Harry Potter and the Boy Who Lived is fantastic. Though the author stopped updating on FFN a while ago for some reason; a lot of it is on the WbA section of DLP. Though worth noting if your concern is about consistent characterization with canon, Harry is totally different in this one, while the twin is effectively canon Harry.
Try On the Way to Greatness by mira mirth.
Summary: As per the Hat's decision, Harry gets Sorted into Slytherin upon his arrival in Hogwarts - and suddenly, the future isn't what it used to be.
Harry isn't exactly friends with Draco, but it is one of my favorite fanfictions.
Top 3 Long Fics:
linkffn(Harry Potter and the Prince of Slytherin):
What happens if you start with every cliché ever and turn it into a fantastically written fic? The author does a huge job of making everyone act logically, and fixes so many of the issues I have with canon. Why are all the 11-year olds so smart? Why did literally no one else think Remus was a werewolf? Why are the aurors never called?
It's one of the best-written pieces of literature I've read. But if that doesn't sway you, this fic has Competent Lockhart.
linkffn(Hogwarts Houses Divided):
Great fic that captures the feel of the first 3 Harry Potter books (before it all got so dark and angsty). Teddy goes to Hogwarts, finds a couple friends, and they go about having their own adventures. Great fun and surprising emotional depth. A major plot point is that the Sorting Hat and Headmistress are upset the 4 houses are so divided.
linkffn(Exile by bennybear):
Draco is convicted after the war and as punishment is forced to live in the Muggle world without Magic. He spends the next few years gradually overcoming his prejudices and becoming a better person. The hallmark of this fic, imo, is that Draco's character arc is very realistic. He doesn't just go from mean shithead to super cool smart and good overnight.
linkffn(Elizium for Sleepless Souls):
Are you a fan of thrillers? Or movies/books where you start with limited information and figure it out piece by piece? Then this is the story for you. Umbridge sends Harry to Azkaban and he wakes up there, but things aren't all that they seem. Can Harry attempt a jailbreak while trying to figure out what is going on?
Island of Fire:
Great worldbuilding. A bunch of Hogwarts kids are shipwrecked on an island and need to figure out how to use magic to survive. One they realize no one is coming for them, they struggle with creating their own civilization. Great idea and well executed.
I'm pretty sure ao3 would work for this. They allow custom HTML and CSS for your works.
They call the custom CSS "work skins", and here's a basic tutorial on how they work. Hope that works for you!
The Stealing Harry - verse is exactly what you're looking for - including RL/SB. The author intended to do 8 books (pre-hogwarts and one for each year of school) but s/he only got through 3rd year. It's still over 400k words iirc and totally worth reading.
Here's fics with a sentient Hogwarts on AO3. I know I've found examples of the Harry/Hogwarts pairing in the past, but honestly they are rarely any good so I don't have any of them saved. Another search term you can use is "Lady Hogwarts" as that seems to result in pairings as well, although there will be some cases where Hogwarts' feelings run more along the lines of maternal affection.
Wow. I just read that yesterday.
No Place Like Home has Petunia refuse to raise Harry, so Harry is brought to Hogwarts and details the alternate timeline resulting from that. There's an adult content warning, but I can't fathom why unless it's because it's part of a 'what if' series and one of the other parts might go somewhere more adult?
/u/EternalFaII can also take solace in the fact that Hogwarts herself DOES play a role in Harry's upbringing in subtle little ways.

> how much energy can an anvil traveling at the speed of light deliver? Blow up a country?
Ooh boy. Let's start with https://www.omnicalculator.com/physics/relativistic-ke
Let's be conservative and go with 0.75c as "close to the speed of light". And a conservative anvil weight at, say, 50kg.
That's 2300174656227MJ, or about 550 megatons of TNT. Yea, that'd probably blow up a good sized chunk of a country.
Step it up to 0.99c and you get 27361756811838MJ, or 6500 megatons of TNT. I can't even imagine what that would do.
Back then there were a lot of theories and deep essays on mugglenet and HP lexicon because we didn't know what's going to happen in the books. People over-analysed the names of people and places to death. I remember some genius deduced Snape's entire allegiance and love for Lily after that scene in OotP! The dates and other details like people's names were very gradually revealed on JKR's website and HP Lexicon so we filled in the details ourselves.
The fanfiction community itself is very different, too. For starters, the writers appear more mature and older. Back in good old 2007 there was a lot of Lily listening to Good Charlotte on her iPod. My Immortal really wasn't the only fic that was like that. Post-OotP people wrote a lot of stories where Harry is adopted by Snape, or is secretly Snape's son. There also seemed to be way more slash and dumb fics where head boy and head girl share a dormitory, and a lot of the slash ended with men getting pregnant. There was also a lot of de-aging shenanigans, Freaky Friday type fics and Harry going back in time to meet his cool emo parents and looking at their iPods. The stories people write these days are just so much more complex and plot-driven. About 10 years ago there were a lot of serious stories too, but they were gathering dust in the Gen section of FFN.
There were also a lot of communities poking fun at fanfics on LiveJournal, and even at the books themselves. McTabby used to collect the funniest summaries and it was a whole big thing. There were also numerous sporking communities that seem to have vanished off the face of the Earth. I think authors now write more serious works than Severus Snape the wereflamingo and people would probably get really hurt and offended if something like that was still around.
This one too
linkffn(http://www.fanfiction.net/s/9754483/1/Para-Bellum) due to multiple dimensions, but it's a sequel
There's also linkffn(http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3766574/1/Prince-of-the-Dark-Kingdom) where eventually Tom basically splits off to do his own thing and even go against Voldemort on his own, but I think it's Voldemort's only shown horcrux.
There was one I read where he's basically adopted by them but I can't find it now. I think Harry was in Slytherin in this one.
edit: found it linkffn(http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4894268/1/Sitra-Ahra)
A butterfly effect. Author has some health problems and plans on updating, but can't due to feeling too weak.
