I remember learning about this so found an article that could explain it better than I could after a hard day at work. Its a short article if you want to read it. The main bit is below
"The basic reason we're so irritated when we overhear a conversation is because the conversation hijacks our cognitive functions—it's a distraction that we can't do anything about and we can't get away from:
If you only hear one person speaking, you're constantly trying to place that part of the conversation in context," Dr. Galván said. "That's naturally going to draw your attention away from whatever else you're trying to do."
It is also a control thing, Dr. Galván and her colleagues said. When people are trapped next to a one-sided conversation - known nowadays as a "halfalogue" - their anger rises in the same way it does in other situations where they are not free to leave, like waiting for a train.
https://lifehacker.com/5991664/why-its-so-annoying-to-overhear-someones-cellphone-conversation
I'm sorry to hear you've hit a low point, but it's admirable that you're being so open about it. I think we all need to kick the stigma around mental health in the face sometimes.
For some practical advice, maybe try getting something like f.lux for your computer if you don't already have it - makes a big difference regarding both your eyes and your sleep schedule when you're looking at screens a lot.
Take care of yourself.
Food for thought, mostly playing Devil's Advocate, but maybe helpful: If I were going to arrange a meetup of any kind I think my litmus test would probably be "is this a meetup for Redditors on r/Wellington" or "is this a meetup for a select group of individuals that I just organized through Reddit but did not intend to be public and open to all". Perhaps the latter case where exclusion is possible or expected would be better served on meetup.com, but could be cross-promoted here?
Check out the Gaspy app which informs you where the cheapest petrol is at the moment based on your location in New Zealand.
Currently the Caltex on Hutt Road (along Kaiwharawhara Gorge) is coming up as the cheapest in the Wellington area.
I’ve been working at a startup for the last year, and today we launched! https://www.producthunt.com/posts/replay-4
It’s a “time travelling debugger” so if you do things on the web you might find it helpful. And just like that, Wellington can lay claim to being the city that designed the best time travelling debugger. Admittedly the competitive field isn’t very big but hey :)
For anyone who read my other post and was interested but didn't want to spend $5: that book I co-wrote is currently free on Amazon.
In other news it's raining, again. I have an entire winter's worth of lawn that I want to mow and I'm stuck in a cycle of it having just rained on the lawn whenever I have time.
I have one, but the battery expanded. You can have it, but I really must insist that before you go through the effort to get a new battery and charge cable, you look up the PSP Emulator: PPSSPP. This runs on potato computers and phones. If you are going to play a psp game then use it. You can't really support the devs anymore so I don't really have an issue with advocating for this approach. If you choose to go down this rabbit hole make sure that you have an adblock - some of the website can have dodgy ads (my suggestion is ublock origin)
From my own experience of planning my move to NZ and Wellington, it's good, and fun, to dream and plan for your future life but it is also very important to live in the now. Life happens NOW. We don't live in the future. I can highly recommend meditation for staying connected to the now. If you're new to meditation, I can also highly recommend the Headspace app. Good luck with your future plans.

If you don't want to go to the secret restaurant in the magic glen in the middle of Victoria Tunnel, try Five Boroughs on Majoribanks. It's not obscure, it's just new.
So this is a bad photoshop job on two stolen photos.
Not just the reddit meetups. Have a gander on meetup.com - there are a bunch of Wellington meetup groups on that which cater to a variety of interests. There is a running group, photography group, theatre group, various social groups, a bunch of political/ideological ones, various yoga and spirituality ones. Pretty much something for everyone. It is a good way to meet people and gain friends I have found.
I've found weather underground to be the most accurate. The hourly forecast towards the bottom of the page is usually excellent, and contains all the useful info.
If you have a weather station at home sign up, contribute, and help make it even more accurate than it already is!
edit - the only drawback is they don't seem to have any rain radar data. So I fallback to metservice for that.
Just to be clear: WCC themselves weren't hacked. They use an external service called Typeform to manage feedback and user requests. You can read more about the general Typeform data breach on their website.
Amazon Prime impulse buy du jour! I just order 6 cans of Hot & Spicy Spam for $50 delivered....and it has to come all the way from Japan!
I love that shit!
Hey there mate, I saw in another comment that you said that it was a 2011 15" macbook? There has been an ongoing problem with them. I had mine do the same thing and had it replaced with a 2014 retina 15" macbook.
The issue is the AMD graphics card on the motherboard desolders itself from the motherboard rendering the machine useless... There are a few ghetto fix's available but I would say go through the proper channels and get it fixed by apple.
Apple have admitted their wrong doings and have started a repair program for these models. https://www.apple.com/nz/support/macbookpro-videoissues/
I usually hate the "forced fun" that comes with corporate functions, but in the past we've had mixed results with
Haven't seen this issue you describe of. I'd recommend installing the official Google Messages app, it's what I use and recommend to others.
Does anyone know of anything interesting/fun to do these holidays (25 yo+)?
I finished my Christmas getaway (5-day tramping trip) already and I've been back home in Wellington since Boxing Day. But all the rest of my friends are having mega long overseas vacations or visiting family, and the clubs and hobby groups that keep me occupied during the working year aren't set to restart until Jan 20+. Even my favorite restaurants and bars are all closed. I checked meetup.com and there's not a single event on for December 30.
My work doesn't begin until 6 Jan. I'm literally dying of boredom here.
Sleep as Android! It's been a life changer for me. Literally never woke up feeling grumpy because it always wakes me up in when I'm in my light sleep phase. I've also paired it with my Hue lights so it simulates a sunrise, and it automatically turns on the nightlight (red light so it doesn't blind you) if I wake up in the middle of the night. Even gives you advice based on your sleeping patterns and tracks your social jetlag. Very very cool app, can't recommend it enough.
If you go to Zealandia then I've had some luck with this app for getting Bellbirds and North Island Robins to stick around for a little longer.
I know that doesn't help you with a group but it's all I've got sorry!
I just finished Mary Robinette Kowal's Lady Astronaut books (all two of them) they were quite good. For something completely different (and a NZ author), have a look at Our Future is in the Air by Tim Corballis. It's like reading classic 70's scifi.
Or you might try that book I helped write.
Google Maps reckons about an hour and a quarter.
Quick edit: Google Maps doesn't show all the tracks, but there are plenty (and named) on OpenStreetMap.
It won't wash out, sure, but it's not going to damage my hair, right? Like, once it grows back (which it will do quickly, mind you), it will be all good?
Also, I need my hair to look like this, and I'm not sure I could ever find a wig that boring.
You can buy these for $200-250USD from here.
Found the website after watching Casey Neistat's vlog on these cool hoverboards. So watch the video for a more detailed explanation on the hoverboards and the website you'll be buying it from.
Has anyone actually seen anyone on these boards in town? I know a barber that works in the Killa Kutz/Taupau Tatou tattoo/barber shop has one.
Had I remembered to buy some when I was out today, I'd read it off the nutritional information sticker for you. Even their own website seems to be lacking, Google found this which says 5g protein, 7g carbs, 11g fat per 100g.
As for taste, compared to the big brand products, which are usually just thicker versions of their regular yoghurt but retain their smooth and creamy texture, theirs is a bit grainy (mostly in appearance, but the texture isn't perfectly smooth) which I believe is more correct for the style.
One of my more common uses for the stuff is tzatziki, for which you need a really thick yoghurt (the lime, plus juice from the cucumber can easily leave you a watery mess), doesn't disappoint.

All three cats wanted to get out of the house NOW!!! because of the noise of the rain on the roof...
That is, until I opened the door to let them out...
Hey :) I've never been to a bookclub but have always wanted to. Am both an avid reader and love audiobooks. Anyone ever tried https://librivox.org — it's public domain audiobooks read by volunteers (and it's free).
Anyway. Unfortunately I can't make it to this meeting, but am super keen to come along for the next one. I do have a couple of questions though, if you don't mind. What is the average age of the group? I only ask as I'm 33 and wouldn't want to be an old fuddy-duddy haha. And how does the book club generally work? Is there a set book or theme or that sort of thing?
Great to see people reading though! And hope to meet you all at the next one :)
I use white noise /background noise a lot, mynoise is great (this is my favourite recently) . If you're not feeling productive, get up and stretch, or just get away from your screen for a couple of minutes!
Yup. Huh, I didn't think the face vomiting emoji was particularly new, but my laptop doesn't show it either. Mind you, I'm still running Sierra (one release behind current) here...
I use the Headspace app wherever I want, whenever I want. First 10 guided meditations are free then there's various subscription options. The first 10 are pretty much for people who haven't explored meditation before but they're a good refresher for anyone who hasn't been 'in the zone' for a while.
Once you complete the first 10, you can choose from various meditation packs for everything from relationships, focus, sport training etc.
Honestly, give the free 10 meditations a crack. I'm loving it.
Oh my... I'm so sorry to hear this! )-; Good on you for reaching out - you're definitely doing the right thing.
If you're looking to make new friends, meetups are a great option. There's tons of groups on meetup.com, and we hold our own meetups too (unfortunately there's none scheduled right now - this isn't usually the case, trust me!)
Things will get better, even if it doesn't feel that way right now :)
> Cool thanks, right so it's not Windows itself that I was reading about subscriptions but Office.
Have a look at Apache Open Office as a free substitute for MS Office.
Huh, I usually get emails back within 2 days and they always reply with a new test server to try out. They currently have 6 test servers that are being used to circumvent Netflix's attempts at blocking them, and the current workaround sevrer has been working flawlessly for me for the last month.
UnoTelly has stopped working for me a total of three times, and each time it's back within days if not hours.
the app is called weConn (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ogemray.weswitch&hl=en) and the plugs are these: https://www.groupon.com/latest-deals/gg-ora-smart-plug-wi-fi-outlet and it looks like they're at an even better price.
Report it to your carrier. Most carriers have a dedicated Call Investigations team who specialise in investigating the source of such calls and blocking them. Make sure you note down the numbers and timestamps.
Which phone are you using? If you're on an Android, you could use Calls Blacklist to block those numbers - you can block a specific range of numbers and unknown/private numbers - and if that doesn't help you can even use the whitelist mode which allows calls only from your contacts.
Read Full Catastrophe Living, it's a brilliant book about the techniques of mindfulness meditation. It's all based on scientific research and studies. No woo, no cultural appropriation. There are places in Wellington the do mindfulness stuff, hit up google.
Yes, I noticed that with Instagram. Good to know it's working. Just as a suggestion, might be worth having a backup app in case that happens again. AFAIK, Signal is independent.
HAve you tried searching for the APK online? Apologies if it doesn't work because of a lack of storefront but I found this https://apkpure.com/nz-covid-tracer/nz.govt.health.covidtracer
If you click on ‘table 2’ here, https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/Non-psychotropic-plant-cannabinoids%3A-new-from-an-Izzo-Borrelli/407d886a418bd6a82851735fa878d5a37270559a , you will see how little you know. ...and that paper is from 2008. ....funny! I assumed reddit would be full of readers, and therefore the arsehole ratio would be lower :)
Others have suggested meetups. I'll second that and suggest you check out meetup.com. There are quite a few meetups in Wellington that cater to a variety of tastes and interests. They are a great way to meet people and make friends.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3JZAnmW57soZDhTUm9id1FDV0U/edit?usp=sharing - This has neater shadows, and is a fair bit brighter so it should be more readable on a city photo background.
Here is an option with less contrast, but a bit less spangly and gold - https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3JZAnmW57soZjdFY0tqT2NQNXc/edit?usp=sharing
Anyway, time to get back to real work for now, my stupid perfectionism kicked in :P
Also, bit of trivia, the reflections in the metal are actually of Wellington CBD
BurgerFuel Cuba St. has a 2 for 1 deal. I think you can get away without a physical coupon since they advertised on Facebook too.
OK, here is mine. I'm a little less confident that this will print quite as well as Caswal's one, but it covers a much bigger chunk of the Wellington region, also from Koordinates data.
It's not as fine grained in it's detail because it covers so much area, but should look ok as something like a 200mm x 150mm sized print.
Alright Daffy is working on another version, covering a larger region. But using 32bit data from Koordinates, I have made a printable (but not tested) height map of Wellington CBD Area.
The rough scale is: 0.1 mm = 5m. Mount Vic is about 4mm tall in this scale. The print is 159.9mm by 147.5mm So about 8km by 7.4km.
I've put it up on Thingiverse here: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:259956
Come by the wellington Ruby on Rails user group Well Railed, last wednesday of each month. I'd recommend the Summer of Tech internship programme for actual work, but well, it's finished for the summer.
Try www.tripadvisor.com. Their ratings are fairly trustworthy. This place is in the top 5 for "value", and it looks like it might have vacancies (it's hard to tell).
> I agree but you have to start somewhere over time an average can be built up.
This is where it gets funny, we see things changing over time. We have improvements to the ADSL network, fibre being deployed, VDSL being deployed and now a new band plan for VDSL improving speeds. We have seen massive improvements in local access speed, as well as upstream bottlenecks being removed, so we're not looking at something static.
This chart, which you can drill into the data, shows the change in connection speed on the Chorus network, its near on doubled since 2012.
We've also got the timing of rollout of the fibre down to the month in many cases.
The ADSL and VDSL is modelled but I have a lot of faith in those models.
I might be biased, but this really is an honest representation of the infrastructure performance.
Sorry I work in data and I enjoy talking about it. Haha.
I had to wonder at first, *maybe being bitchy and sarcastic is why she doesn't have any friends* and had to bring it up. But now I see what you mean :D It's just the words you chose
Yeah I'm like that with friends when I've known them for a long time (taking the piss). I take time to get to the level of banter with people. Usually I try and be polite and not risk offending -that's just me though.
There's also meetup.com As well as a meetup from reddit I think ?
Based on your description of your interest I'd probably look for game / craft groups.
Even if they don't develop into longterm friendships you can still have a good time, the fun can be in trying.
I don't really get sarcastic myself but I think being that way I end up being overly blunt :D
Hopefully by the end of this month. We are in talks with broadband wholesalers now. We need to sign a deal and sign up the first customer. As a wholesaler we need to handle support, billing, sales, and marketing.
Keeping it word of mouth in in the beginning will help us scale up support and billing services and work out any pain points before we start investing in marketing and sales. Want to join? https://www.loomio.org/invitations/4638c0bbab75ffd09e63
Hi there, perhaps a silly question but do you have any automatic cloud back up apps running, maybe even unknowingly just doing their thing in the background? E.g. Google Photos. Also are you using an iPhone or an Android? If Android I have heard success stories about DiskDigger.
Current: How To Win Friends and Influence People
Previous: I tried to read Naked Lunch by William Burroughs but man.. I only got 60 pages or so in. Has anyone successfully read that? My brain just couldn't decipher what the hell was going on.
There is an app for Hector dolphins sightings
Android - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thundermaps.dolphin&hl=en
Apple - https://itunes.apple.com/nz/app/hectors-dolphin-sightings/id1095179294?mt=8
Wellington is probably friendly and easier going - it's easy af to talk to people on Friday or Saturday night out when everyone is drinking and even quieter nights are easy going - , but if you have internal blockages or anxiety around socialising and making friends; you're not necessarily going to end up on top just by moving cities, especially if you don't put yourself out there. Tell us a bit about yourself :)
University clubs, bars, social events, dance classes, other hobby classes, meetup.com,
Don't put all your eggs in one basket. You need to be proactive about this. Say, go to a few dance classes a week, a social event, and go out every Friday or Saturday. That's 3 outlets. You'll have a lot more social momentum and freedom.
And then look for little ways to add inspiration, love and kindness to someone's day. Chat to someone in the line while waiting for coffee or groceries. Thank the bus driver. Smile at the grandma walking down the street and also smile and give love to the shady looking hooligans on the corner too ; )
I literally just got these last month. I've been a big fan of Anker (the company behind SoundCore) for about a decade now. They make really solid products, and their customer support is actually very good.
Anyway, the headphones are very good, particularly given their price point. Although their Active Noise Cancelling isn't as good as the Sony XM4 or Bose QC45, which are the "gold standard", it's actually not far off from those, yet it's hundreds of dollars cheaper.
Sound quality is very good as well...once again, it punches far above it's "weight class".
The battery is another big plus - I used it almost the entire time on a 25 hour flight (watching movies etc, then using it with ANC activated to mute the engine sound when sleeping), then continued using it daily, all day, once I was back home for nearly an entire week, and the battery only got down to about half charge. Absolutely bonkers.
If that price point is a bit steep, the model just below it (the Q30) is apparently nearly identical, with just a few features missing.
Anyway, highly recommend.
This thing: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07B2W96JH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I find that just having its mount on my helmet is enough to make drivers a little less shitty. One of my favourite stories is the time a driver screamed at me because I was in the road, then saw my (empty) helmet cam mount and quickly zipped off. Not sure if Wellington has the same problems with shitty drivers as where I live does, but if it does, this may help. I might recommend something with a larger battery if you do more riding, though! This runs out rather quick.
I would definitely get a third party app, if you're on Android I use BusStoppa myself but I heard good things about Wellington Bus Tracker too. The official one is derided as a pile of junk that barely does better than just opening the metlink website in a browser.
It's pretty much the same without being a shitty app. That being said I'd get a third party app. If you're on Android something like this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.goder.busquerysystemwil or BusStoppa. Heaps better than the official ones.
The putangirua pinnacles are cool. It's easy gradient if you stay in the river valley rather than the Bush walk. Ngawi fishing village may be interesting or yawn depending in inclination. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g255115-d3546252-Reviews-Putangirua_Pinnacles-Wellington_Greater_Wellington_North_Island.html

There are a few really good general DYI books. Ive got this one which is handy https://www.amazon.com/DIY-Know-how-Show-how-Julian-Cassell/dp/1409374661

Mevo is a car sharing app that allows you to use a car by minute, hour, or day you will only pay for the time you use the car.
The app is used to unlock the car and you pretty much park it most parking spots in wellington (there are some restrictions).
The Mevo app can be downloaded from using these links: iOS Android
There are phone apps that'll help you find things using the phone's accelerometer/compass.
Google's one for Android works well enough: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.stardroid
"[Alcyone](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcyone_(star\))" is the name you need to search for.
Phew - a lot to digest there. I use a combination of the Metlink site to get route information and the BusStoppa app for checking what buses are due soon. BusStoppa is really accurate and way better than the information on the signs (with all those 'Due' buses that disappear).

Weather Station. Uses real current data from all the airports and town weather stations Nation Wide. Also has a Windy portal and radar. Ad or sub. Supported.

I use the Tractive Cat GPS for my cat. It's great. And unlike other options, it is ACTUALLY a gos and not just a Bluetooth tracker that needs to ping off it strangers phones and devices to work. So if, like me, you live rurally, this tractive cat gps is the best option. It gets his location every couple of seconds and plots his path/route on a map every day. My cat does about 4 to 5kms each night.
It's not the cheapest, and u have to pay like 100 bucks or so a year for the data/sim card subscription. But it's deffs the best and most accurate device for this purpose. I got mine from Amazon:.
It was this - https://www.amazon.com/Windproof-Travel-Umbrella-Rain-Compact/dp/B0160HYB8S?th=1
I have two now and despite it looking like a normal umbrella, its solid (and cheap!)
Simon Tatham's Puzzles. 39 different kinds of logic puzzle, completely free with no ads, great little timewaster when you've got 5-15 minutes to kill.
Not particularly exciting but I used Catchy a lot for bus and train times. It's only as accurate as Metlinks API but it saves dealing with the horrible Metlink app at least. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nz.catchy.twa

go to a wellington gig where leigh jackson or nick granville are playing and ask either of em, they both used to teach guitar there and play regularly around wellington, in fact, nick granville has an ask.com
If you are interested in board games or meeting new people, check out meetup.com/WellingtonOnBoard for all events related to board games in the greater Wellington area.
Some events cost a little to cover room hire, others require you to buy some food/ drink, and some are free.
It's rough for sure when you aren't in an office or people based environment. I work from home and long hours. It's fine for me because I'm a loner by nature and can't really be around people much without escaping to recharge. The place I've met people who became actual long-term friends have all been related to Muay Thai but that's a real shock to the system if you're unfit as you say.
Fitness really is team based so its the ideal place to meet people. Try a running (even walking) group thats newbie friendly on Meetup.com possibly? Yoga is great for joint strengthening which is important for any physical activity but its done in silence.
One thing that really fell absolutely flat is using online dating (tinder/okc) purely to meet friends, people still match based on physical attraction and always expect more. And they were never flexible and disinterested by nature. Its a complete farce.
It's HOT!!! Damned HOT!!!!

It's not straight-forward or simple as you'll essentially be a self-marketing one man business; do some research first. Also keep your first year's tax in a bank account because the IRD will want it all in the second year.
On the up side, nobody on the Internet can see that you're working on a braille terminal. I knew a blind programmer at university and it was damn impressive what he could do.
The OpenGIS database includes detailed topographical datasets including elevation data. Seriously NZ has some of the best open GIS info out there.

Print a picture of something silly and do that thing where you stick your face through so it looks like it's your face on the body of whatever weird thing it was you printed. It's low-tech, you can't stop me!

I believe in you, you can make this happen!
Any suggestions for pre-paid mobile plans please?
Vodafone is changing rates, and i dont use it much (mostly text mrs). If i put $20 on and it may last 2-4 months, so do not need a monthly thing which is what most seem to be trying to push.
One factor is coverage, so emergency use on holiday if one breaks down between cities say. This site seems to imply Spark is better?

I would advise against Lastpass for a number of reasons. Bitwarden is open source and cross platform, will work on _everything_. If you would prefer a paid offering, perhaps take a look at dashlane https://www.dashlane.com/
There are the usual online tools:

Yeah, that's been discussed a bit. Mobile phone companies offer white-label services. Companies that resell these services are called MVNOs. We want to focus initially on building our member base before we collectively decide how to grow in the future. I would love to see us provide mobile services as well. We'll be having further discussions about that on loomio. You can join that discussion here: https://www.loomio.org/invitations/4638c0bbab75ffd09e63
Hey mate, I've seen a few posts about power bills recently. Thought I'd chuck my recent ones in a spreadsheet so others can get an idea. I think we pay a reasonable amount.

It's cyclical, I recommend the works of Alan Peterkin if you're interested in the social history of facial hair, he published a moustache specific book about a decade ago.
I grabbed a Heihox from Amazon. I wanted to spend less than a hundred bucks on it, any more than that and I’ll buy something locally from a store that’s got things locally.
It’s substantially quieter than the Hario Slim that I had, and about five times as fast - a three to four minute grind time has gone down to less than a minute for the same dose.
I found "Don't Tell Mum I Work on the Rigs: (She Thinks I'm a Piano Player in a Whorehouse)" a lighthearted, funny romp of anecdotes about working in the oil industry. It's hardly literature, but is very enjoyable. There's also a sequel called "this is not a drill"
So the thing with MREs is that they actually do not have a massively long shelf life - only a few years, as they were designed more to allows for half-decent remote meals away from a camp, hence the flameless ration heater that comes in every one.
So if you are wanting to store long-life meals, Like has already been posted, I would suggest the back country cuisine meals as they are dehydrated, and will store for longer.
That being said, people are always on Youtube reviewing MREs from long past their recommended consumption date, and they are fine. So you could always just go for the MRE, at around $25 a meal though, they are quite expensive locally. You could simply buy them on Amazon for a lot less.
Personally, in my survival kit, we only have a few dehydrated meals, and the rest is canned goods. Cans will last, and then you recycle them through.
It's ok. I sometimes use Insight Timer. Worth a look imho if you're looking for a variety of tracks to help with meditation, sleep or stress.
Just got an email from Blinkist (who provide summaries of non-fiction books), saying that they've upgraded my account to Premium for free until April 25.
