I would never put my money with a company that uses pyramidal schemes as a "marketing" tool, tbh. Also, a few considerations:
>We are 31 and 36
So you are still young to start building your retirement wealth through investments.
>I am very nervous about risk so I thought we would just put everything we could into retirement plans and cash but it seems that isn't the best plan.
Please, read this book:
Yes, the guy looks like a self-help coach for pimps but almost everything he recommends is true. Read this book first and you will learn 80% that you need to learn to have the best retirement plan possible.
Cash is your enemy, you will lose for inflation. Retirement plans, in 90% of the time, will lose (a lot) to index funds. The risk is almost irrelevant in the long term if you are diversified.
>In regards to your last paragraph, would I look into an "all weather portfolio" on ETF?
It's explained in the book but if you google it you will find it.
However, the most important lesson you need to learn: DO NOT PAY HIGH FEES & COMMISIONS (>+1%) for anyone, not even the best bank in the world.
Try the Spontacs app. My girlfriend uses it and have found a friend or two. On the app there are mostly people who are in the same poaition as you. She went surfing with cool people, out drinking, or just go to the weihnachtsmarket togehter. I joined two times, once it was a great evening with funny germans living here, once was terrible booring. Whatever, just try it out.

Looks legit.
I can't read French, so be certain from where they ship so you know about extra costs.
Lucerne is really beautiful. There's an established "tourist route" that involves taking a really beautiful cable car ride to Mt. Pilatus-Kulm, a cog-railroad ride down the other side, and a boat ride across Lake Lucerne back to your starting point. The whole ride takes 2-3 hours, but I'd recommend staying longer at the top to hike around (we unfortunately did not do this due to time constraints).
Keep in mind, Switzerland is still really expensive (if you're budget conscious)--even more so than Paris.
https://matrix.itasoftware.com/ lets you do proximity searches. The only thing it can't do is buying tickets. Once you found the airport and the flight turn to https://www.google.com/flights or your favorite travel agent to buy the tickets.
I guess this is what you are about to do: https://www.outdooractive.com/en/hiking-trail/bernese-oberland/tourenplanung-am-7.-august-2018/116460034/
You could also exit the Eiger Ultra Trail earlier and take a shorter route (you could go for Bussalp instead of heading towards First or decend towards Grindelwald at First instead of hiking all the way to Grosse Scheidegg).
As far as I know there is a Hotel on top of the Faulhorn.
So I’ve made a small map based on your recommendations.

Any suggestions welcomed
This one can be delivered https://www.amazon.de/dp/B06XWR4CL4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_fEuaGbAAB9G1B?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Couple of months ago I bought this one https://www.amazon.de/dp/B01I9YFKHG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_eGuaGbC33VS6H?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 but they don't deliver to Switzerland anymore for some reason
I bought a subscription to Komoot, which is really good although I suspect somewhat incomplete. Useful for hiking, walking and cycling all around Europe. You can use it for free as well, but I think you get only a limited area region and limited off-line options like that.
Ah dropped phone I would comment with a classic 'taminomal', followed by a clenched fist.
Check out that app for inspiration. they generate curses and swearing in swiss dialects: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.notizklotz.swisswowbagger.app
I would strongly strongly recommend this book to you. https://www.amazon.com/Between-Alps-Hard-Place-Switzerland/dp/089526238X/
There was a campaign against Switzerland by interest groups hoping to make a lot of money, Who deliberately presented a very slanted history of Switzerland during the war. An American who had worked for the American senate foreign relations committee and other parts of the American foreign-policy apparatus and who was a grown-up wrote a book to set the record straight. I would absolutely recommend that you read it at least as one book among others.
Unrelated to the question, I also had a thrip infestation which I suffered to get rid of 🥲
I'm curious to know how are you're fighting it.
I also used those bugs but for me, I think the most effective things was those sticks, a mix of fertilizer and plant protection.
I was in your boat last year, moving from the USA with a special Bluray and DVD collection that I wasn't willing to part with. Sony makes a great Bluray player that plays all regions of Bluray and DVDs. I got it from Amazon DE. Make sure you get the region free model! (and customs fees are included in Amazon prices and shipping these days). The nice thing about this is you don't have to do anything to switch DVD regions, it's automatic (although takes a moment). For Bluray, you have to press a button and there's an instruction sheet it comes with telling you what to do, since you need to change it each time you swap regions. I keep it on top of the player so I don't forget.

It looks like you'd either have to order on Amazon or make the glue yourself. There may be Japanese paper shops that could have it, but I couldn't find any info on it online. Maybe someone else has a tip.
I bought this one for my USA trip a couple of months ago. Worked like a charm. There is no limit on how much data you can use.
You may be surprised, but there is still also slavery in the western world. Just have a look at Mende Nazer's "Slave", which is a first-hand account of a "modern" slave, who ended up in the UK.

Buy him dissolvable electrolyte tablets to take with him. Just pop one in a glass of water I always take these on trips with me!
I would suggest getting some electrolyte sachets that he can carry with him and mix with tap water. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Pedialyte-Electrolyte-Powder-Variety-Hydration/dp/B004M1BOC6/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?crid=HY4RAKTQIT2A&keywords=electrolyte+powder&qid=1653894220&sprefix=electrolyte+%2Caps%2C285&sr=8-7
I carry these with me all the time when I travel in case of diarrhea, food poisoning, or other common travel ailments.
I had to deal with a similar situation and tried all kinds of natural / environmentally and animal friendly means. Best solution I came up with is: 1. Window / door nets (ideally installed by a professional) 2. 1x a week using this one: https://www.amazon.de/ENVIRA-Spinnen-Vernichter-5Ltr/dp/B00GA00O6Y
This toxic definitely works. Only quite painful to see how the spider slowly die.
I effectively reduced the number of spiders by +95%. Now and then you find a dead one (already counting towards the up to 5%), which means the toxics can already help (next to improved window / door barriers) to keep the spiders outside ... by spraying in outside parts of your house, like the facade or balcony, not just the inside area.
I did the above for +5 years and could not identify harm to my own health. But you never know.
>~~Your~~ Washington post's article ~~relates~~ is about grand jury transcripts and it also mentions national security
My mother did an LLD regarding the US legal system and its intricacies unknown to most. Ninety-nine percent of what she discovered was unknown even to most American lawyers.
If you want to learn more, read this book: https://www.amazon.com/American-Trap-Americas-economic-against/dp/1529326869
Get ready to have your mind blown away..... Frédéric Pierucci now consults on what he has learned first hand during his involuntary "stay" at a high-security US prison. If I hadn't lived through my mom's four year research about the US legal system, I would have NOT believed a word in Mr. Pierucci's book.
I highly doubt Swiss shops make the chain from scratch. It’s a lot of labour, in places like India where the labor is cheap it’s more common. But the results are not beautiful, machine made is much better. It’s not that complicated to match the color I wouldn’t worry about that. I don’t know what you expect as handcrafted honestly. It’s not like food products, all jewelry is somehow hand made. Machines make it perfectly smooth or fast or well polished. You are in a much cheaper country I’d look there tbh go around look at the prices and haggle a bit. I’d say 3K should get you more than 25-27 grams. 5-6 grams for the chain, rest for the cross. It would be pretty big like 3 inches? but each to their own :)
Depending on how accessible the car parts are, maybe putting a strong neodymium magnet or many of them on the inside could hold the sticker that's outside? So effectively skipping the aluminum part?
Second thing that comes to mind is to use some sticky tape that's easily removable. Like that tesa things you can hang stuff on, even on rough surfaces. Or double sticky silicon/gel tape that's basically cleaned with water and sticky again. But that thing can hold really hard.
Tesa things are I think tesa powerstrips.
Tape I have is this one, but it can break a surface of small stick made from osb wood board. And I've currently fixed the table on a kallax on bunch of points, and I can't move it, so I'm afraid I'll damage the kallax surface when I try :/
I hope car paint is harder, but be aware. Tesa is gentler.

Shoot. Sorry about that.
Try using virtual credit cards (you fund at will) to pay these suspicious bills.
I use this: https://wise.com/gb/virtual-card/
Just Google "virtual credit cards" for a list of them (do NOT use SKRILL ever)
Linden Treff is very popular, and their meat and cocktail sauce recipe is unbeatable.
For 8.50CHF you get a menu (soft drink / Ayran included). During lunch / dinner time queue can be long (>30min waiting time); Well, I'm not surprised, it's really good kebab.
I have problems like everyone else, I just fight them. Like John Wayne said: "Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway.". This is the same. I also feel social awkwardness from time to time… but if I want to get social connections, you need to saddle up anyway.
I know about that epidemic. I'm reading right now "Do nothing" from Celeste Headlee and she is talking about that… how people is loonier than ever… specially young people. She produce some explanations related to overwork, perfectionism and technology.
Anyhow, if you want to overcome looniness you pretty much need to do it yourself… and get out of the bubble of conform yourself created. Perhaps you need to be slapped —literally and figuratively— by someone really loves you. Close your computer, stop looking to your phone, and forget about social media. Go to the real world and try to enjoy it. And what is more important… learn that things aren't going to be perfect, life is imperfect —what is perfection?— and you need to learn to circumnavigate those rough spots. Perhaps even enjoy them.
It's pretty sad that we are living on one of the best moments for humanity —almost no war— and we aren't able to get our shit together and enjoy it and even push for improve.
Our biggest thread is climate change. It's going to be a conundrum and a really big challenge to solve, but I'm sure we'll solve it. One way or another.
Shake things up!
Sorry- NEXT week Wednesday and Thursday. The forecast is a little tough. But the weather in the mountains changes in a heartbeat. And being above the clouds can be a wonderful treat.
Just because your wife has a job offer, does not mean you're guaranteed to find anything easily. Even with a family reunification visa, your lack of language skills will be a significant barrier to finding reasonable employment in this country.
It will be 2-3 years minimum before you have functional (work/career) fluency in another language. There are plenty of positions that do not require another language, but it does make your applications far less competitive.
I have 6 years of management experience in a STEM field and a Swiss masters, B2 level french, and after 300 job applications, I accepted a remote position in the US instead. Language matters a lot.
As others have mentioned, this will be very difficult for your older daughter as well. She will not be able to go to university in Switzerland, and US schools will be very expensive as an international student after that. Additionally, it's notoriously difficult to integrate in Swiss culture, especially without proper language skills. Spanish will not help.
Finally, keep in mind that Switzerland is also very expensive, especially for a family of 4 on 1 income (assuming you don't have a job offer right now). Some websites estimate yearly expenses (before rent) will total around 65,000chf per year. Rent for a 3 bedroom apartment will be 3,000+ a month. Your wife's job offer has to be very lucrative for this to be sustainable.

I'm not sharing any of this to be a downer, but realistically it will be a very tough transition period and you should be aware of the significant obstacles. Switzerland is a stunning country to visit but a very hard country to become a part of.
It seems that apple streaming has it.

Download a vpn if its not available in your country and set your location to Switzerland. Should be Easypeasy
I switched to init7 beginning of January, and had 0 issues.
The speed promised is delivered, I'm using an Ubiquity edge router x SFP with the module they sent me and I reach around 900 Mb, but I have several switches between me and the router and other devices where running (I did not unplugged the whole network during tests). So far, not an itch, and I didn't needed to reach their support.
https://www.speedtest.net/result/8935430270
I had the OPO plug installed on the 6th of January, and ppoe started working the next day.
I chose init7 because of all the praises I heard about their service and support.I cannot say I really looked at alternatives before taking the dive.I do not regret it a bit until now.
Does your friend like books/history? I found this book pretty interesting to get a better understanding of Switzerland: A Concise History of Switzerland https://www.amazon.com/Concise-History-Switzerland-Cambridge-Histories-dp-0521143829/dp/0521143829
Thank u very much!! And yes the seller and the sender is Amazon.
I wouldn't bother.
As a US citizen, you have a much better option available: American credit cards.
Assuming your credit rating isn't shit, you can get a credit card that has the Visa/Mastercard exchange rate (~0.3% markup), no foreign transaction fee and a decent chunk of rewards or cashback.
If your credit rating is shit or you don't want a credit card, the Charles Schwab debit card is fantastic. Not only does it have no exchange rate markup, it has unlimited ATM withdrawals and it will even refund the ATM fees. Contrast that to Revolut and TransferWise that charge 2% over their monthly ATM withdrawal limit (which is easy to exceed while travelling).
The main thing to watch out for is AMEX. Don't get one. It's not well-accepted in Switzerland and you're almost guaranteed to run into someone who won't take it.
I'd advise against a Swiss bank account because as others have pointed out, usually you have to pay a hefty account maintenance fee if you live abroad.
I'd advise against storing money in a Revolut or TransferWise account because these services are not banks and have limited guarantees on any balances you hold there. I'd advise against spending money with them because you're financially better off with an American credit card and its rewards.
You can create an account with my link and your card will be free plus you’ll earn 22chf and me too. I don’t really use Revolut anymore so I can send my 22chf to you if you want.
First of all, congratulations to being accepted by a university in Switzerland! Wish you lot of fun and success, and hope that everything works out well for you.
Without knowing the document and the exact phrasing, my guess would be that this just reflects the different rule set for non-EU citizens vs EU-citizens (or any other country which don't need a visa). However, if I am not completely wrong non-EU citizens can apply for a 6 month extra period, which they can use for job searching after they complete their studies (you might want to double check that rule exactly, either with the embassy in your city, or maybe with administration at your university). There is also some political motivation to change this rule, as it obviously doesn't make sense to send highly skilled people away after their studies. see this article in German (use incognito mode to access article behind paywall). Relevant part translated by deepl:
> In fact, there are other hurdles for university graduates from third countries that make working in Switzerland more difficult. For example, they are not allowed to complete a full-time internship during their studies. And: After completing their studies, they only have six months to find a job.
I checked the usal onlineshops which sell American goods. No luck.
There are two issues: Most likely no one wants it, if they they can have real Parmesan. Second, it might be illegal to sell as Parmesan is a protected designation of origin.
You can order from Amazon.

I assume we (party of four) all have to install the 'COVID Certificate app' on our phones, right?
COVID Certificate app
Did you install the SwissCovid app (contact tracing) on your phone during your visit?
>That is not possible because you need adress to
For a bank transfer? You only need the IBAN. You can put a Shakespeare sonnet in the address field and it will work just fine. The address field is purely informative and is not checked by the bank.
You can find out the receipient bank by the IBAN. The digits 3rd through 8th identify the receipient bank (this is Switzerland specific, source). The bank will not reveal to you the real data of the owner of the IBAN, the prosecutor will be able to find it out though.
What you are showing is an orange slip and only works in Switzerland.
If you have the IBAN (which is not visible in your photo) then you can make a SEPA wire transfer. It's the standard wire transfer in the European Economic Area. They are free in most banks, and extremely common to transfer funds. You will have to include some reference/note/text (not the reference number in the orange slip).
A US bank would probably be able to do that, but usually at a high cost, both in terms of currency exchange fees and of wire transfer fees.
You can try with some services like Wise.com (it will be good to have an account with them anyway to transfer funds). It's going to be cheaper.

https://www.primevideo.com/ works for me in switzerland.
There is no Full Access to a Streaming service, as every licenses need to be bought for every Country seperatly, and afaik swiss prime is quite gimped...
You could try using a streaming solution like Moonlight. That's what I do when I'm gaming on my laptop at home. Giant desktop PC sits in another room and does all the hard work while the laptop gets nice sexy graphics and framerates.

The cultural dimensions from Hofstede are related to work, certainly not about dating behaviours!
The point I am trying to make is that it is simply wrong to generalize and attribute traits to people's nationalities.

As a foreigner who came to Switzerland a couple of years ago, I really need to tell you that duolingo is bullshit. If you want an app, try at least Tandem.
But for me the best way to learn german and french was just by trying (like in a bar or a club (marrtial arts, volleyball, etc)) and mixing it with a really chill german course (1-2 pero week or so).

Something that I haven't seen yet in the comments is the "plus" of getting the rail pass is that you get a lot of non-rail benefits. This includes cable cars, funiculars, and ferries (although not all of them, sometimes it is "just" a discount).
Also, keep in mind that the Swiss Pass will also include city buses and trams - this will be very welcome when you're visiting the cities (and villages, for that matter).
Have you downloaded the SBB app (for GooglePlay, but you get the idea)? I recommend doing so and then making some "pretend" trips. You'll just see just how convenient the transit connections are, and the app makes it super easy to plan ahead.
I don't know if there are free learning programs but on liarumantscha.ch you can at least find information. There is also an app from grisun.ch but it costs 29.-. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grisun.wssursilvan

NordVPN is absolutely worth it if you stream on a PC. The problem is when your streaming device is an Apple TV or a Firestick or whatever. Since NordVPN is a software, you can't install it on on your Wifi router, so you either airplay your PC to your TV or you're smart enough to set up a VPN enabled Wifi router. NordVPN's website has a page that explains what a VPN enabled router is that is compatible with their service which you can check out here.
The apartment likely got fibre in the meantime. While the old copper cables in the appartment might still exist, they most likely will lead to nowhere.
Typically, though, such obsolete inlets would be covered, which was not done here, indicating sloppy management. Either this is a cheap apartment (not worth the additional effort), or it is managed cheaply (company not being eager at doing a good job due to miserable pay by the owner).
Anyway: cover it with a nice item and have fun in there :)
There's a book called "Züritüütsch isch aifach schön" that uses children's songs by Schtärneföifi
It shows the lyrics in Züritüütsch, Hochdeutsch, and English. Go back and forth as needed until you can sing along and understand the words.
Your calculations are incorrect:
> German VAT is 19% so a 199.99 eur item is 161.99 before tax
199.99/1.19 = 168, not 161.99. Add 7.7% and it comes to 181 EUR, exactly as Amazon claims.
Were you maybe multiplying by 0.81 to try to get the original price? That isn't correct. To reverse a multiplication you have to divide by the number you multiplied by. To add VAT you multiply by 1.19 so to remove it, you divide by 1.19.
Plus, which item? I just picked one at random and I see the opposite.

Delivery to Switzerland:
The "Total before VAT" number is actually higher in Germany. I'm guessing in this case there's a hard drive tax or something.
My solution in the States is to get a surge suppressor with an angled plug, like this one.
The plug is pretty flat against the wall, then I can plug stuff in somewhere else, and have some basic surge suppression.
