Stanford tries to figure out the how's and why's of how proteins misfold by running thousands of computer simulations of folding proteins globally. What you are doing is running a computer simulations of a folding protein, and then uploading them back to Stanford when they're finished. One of the many things I think about when my insomnia is keeping me from sleeping is the practical application of a Pi cluster for folding. Getting 6 of 'em let's say and popping them into one of these bad boys.

I don't exactly get it but I also don't mind tossing F@H my email since they're an old, well regarded, and independent project that doesn't sell data.

Somewhere here on reddit i read that it's not fixed (it's adapted depending on the number of people participating). Also, it's not linear, e.g. if you have a really high PPD your payout actually gets decreased in order to distribute the BAN more evenly.

Note that you'll have to finish at least 10 WU's and use a passkey (see https://foldingathome.org/support/faq/points/passkey/). Before that you will not be credited the full points (you'll only get around 10% or so) and your userid will also not show up in the official statistics.

According to their website, folding with GPU is currently not supported on Macbook.

With f@h, what did you try to get it working?

You need the username and team provided by bananominer, generated from your Banano wallet address. There are also a minimum number of work units that need to be completed before you get a payout.

No requirements, I only have a CPU and can run it. The better the graphics card, the more you can fold per day but the bananos you earn don't correspond linearly to your points from folding

Now I can drag windows between three screens, the MacBook Pro's monitor (left), the external monitor (middle), and the Chromebook's monitor. I’ve seen a number of posts and comments asking if folks’ computers are able to make a profit on folding, or if they’re already folding, how to calculate the profit (or loss) they might be taking.

While we’re all in this for the community, the memes, and the potassium, we can’t ignore the fact that people want bananos and are hoping to down the line, make some money off it. So with that in mind, here’s a brief guide on what I do, and what I recommend for others to calculate how much they’re making on top of the awesome contributions to science they’re making when folding.

So here’s my method which hopefully will be helpful to other monkeys out there.

Note: This only works with a dedicated folding machine or if you’re good about switching to the energy monitor/smart plug whenever you’re folding. Some plugs might be able to turn on/off monitoring but I’m not sure. I have a dedicated folder so just leave it on and plugged into smart plug 24/7.

1. Get a cheap smart plug off Amazon or your preferred retailer. This is the one I use but there are plenty of options out there.
2. Plug your folding machine directly into the smart plug and monitor daily/monthly usage. You can do surge protector —> smart plug —> computer.
   
3. Look up your price per kWh on your energy company’s website or your most recent bill. Look at your smart plug’s energy use report (likely in app) and use an energy cost calculator. This is the one I use.
4. Look at your daily/monthly payouts.
5. If when you compare weekly/monthly payout to your energy costs, your payouts total more than energy usage costs: You’re getting potassium & profit!

If anyone has any other methods, especially if they’re even easier/less complicated that mine, I’d love to hear them!

This is a standard 3/8” washer. 13 washers fit on a 1” hex bolt.

Actually, both the cards are solely for folding. I have used this PCI-E riser to connect the second GPU to an x1 PCI-E slot on the motherboard. I had ordered the second GPU sometime after the first one, so when it was time to install it, the PC already had the drivers installed with the first GPU working, after plugging it into the riser and booting up the system, the second GPU got recognized right away. Though I had to reinstall Folding@Home because the second GPU was showing disabled, after reinstalling, both started folding fine.

Folding at Home no longer gives points for incomplete units, so it would be impossible to get rewards that way. You should be able to pause and resume a work unit though, assuming you don't let it time out.

Sadly, the only way to fold with a GPU is within Linux or Windows. You can only fold in CPU with Mac (as stated in their Requirements) and also you cannot fold with an integrated GPU (F@H does not currently support it). :(

I've folded on an older computer before, it just might take forever to complete a work unit. And be aware that it could be bad for your computer if things overheat.
