Completely agreed. For what it's worth, I work at a company that is aware of all of these problems and trying to change them: https://lbry.com
It is hard, because we have to do a lot peer-to-peer and from the ground up if we want to be safe from the abuse you describe.

No, it's way more than just a decentralized YouTube. I'm genuinely surprised you haven't heard of lbry / odysee. Not trying to detract from your project idea, the more the merrier, but you did ask if a Blockchain based publishing platform already exists.
i'm hoping blockchain platforms like LBRY might be an answer. It's not able to be censored because anything blockchain is basically an immutable decentralized hydra that is owned by no one and everyone.
Brand new site and technology, but check out lbry.tv. They've created the open source LBRY protocol to share video content.
This is what the internet used to be and should be... protocols, not platforms.
There is much, yes.
Pipeth, for a free Twitter-like. Not many features, though.
Lbry/Odysee (https://lbry.com and https://odysee.com), for a YouTube-like. Quite well done, to be honest.
Ethereum world, for an in progress not-Facebook-like social network.
You also have DTube and Steemit, I think, as well as https://www.publish0x.com for blogging and many more.
Please check out https://lbry.com/faq/rewards for more details about this program. This was one of the rewards causing abuse for us and large outlays of LBC, which we are limited in how much we can give out to sustain the platform. The price of LBC has also gone from 2-3 cents to 20 cents last week (now around 14), so that's taken into consideration as well.
>you need severs, everywhere to make is accesible
You don't seem to understand what decentralized means because a social media platform isn't decentralized if it needs servers. I was talking about platforms like LBRY
As I understand, yes. There is a good summary here:
https://reclaimthenet.org/odysee-overview/
> The LBRY network’s decentralized, open-source, blockchain-based structure solves many of these problems by reducing the power LBRY Inc., the company behind LBRY, holds over Odysee users and adding more transparency to the platform. > > [..] If Odysee ever does start to implement more aggressive censorship measures under [their content moderation] rules, anyone in the community can take the code and create a client that doesn’t censor as broadly.
Yes, this isn't remotely hidden.
We've also promised to give away 3/4 of that and keep only 1/4 for profits.
You can track how we've used it thus far here: https://lbry.com/credit-reports
We've certainly made mistakes but on the whole I think we've been pretty prudent.
If you could share your reasoning as to how giving it all to miners as opposed to things like lbry.com/youtube, I'm quite curious.
These days I pretty much only leave one comment on videos I like:
“I love your channel, I wish it was also available someplace reliable and decentralized like LBRY https://lbry.com/youtube “
(That’s the most important URL for creators IMO)
In LBRY you can have multiple publishes with the same name. Each publish will also have claim_id that is unique.
If you want to get link to a specific publish, you would do something like:
lbry://<claim_name>:<claim-id>
or odysee.com/<claim_name>:<claim_id>
The publish which has most LBC supporting it, of all publishes with the same name, can be accessed without adding the <claim_id> to the end.
https://lbry.com/faq/naming
Blobs files are files that being seeded via network if you delete them you will need redownload content that you want to seed (it's safe to delete). If blobs files takes too much space on C drive you might also want to follow this guide https://lbry.com/faq/how-to-change-lbry-blob-files
It doesn't matter what the platform is, if the content is illegal i.e. on interpols worst-of list, it will be blocked by any host in any country.
But i assume what you're actually talking about is maximal freedom with regards to ToS so even some of the more, shall we say exotic forms of content, can be accommodated.
I suggest looking into LBRY which already has a website based UI that uses the service (https://odysee.com/) demonstrating proof of concept.
While LBRY still honors DMCA takedowns they do so in a way that is much better than youtube's mangled automated system:
As a final point. No hosting is free.
Even with youtube you're essentially trading your online persona as a form of endorsement i.e. so if people subscribe to your channel or watch your content they get shown ads whether you are sponsored by those companies or not.
In regards to LBRY, it's the users who foot the bill (at least initially) via internet access/uploads, electricity, etc of making content available through blockchain.
Heads up this is an invite link by clicking to creating an account you are contributing to a cryptocurrency/blockchain product.
I don't know if this is against the rules of this sub. But I imagine people here would not appreciate both the lack of transparency on this and the carbon footprint on the use of blockchain. https://lbry.com/faq/invites
Please Please Please people, if you are a content creator with a valuable channel that is at risk of getting removed from youtube you should really consider mirroring your channel where your videos CAN'T be deleted!
take a look at LBRY for example: https://lbry.com/youtube
LBRY is a free, user driven youtube experience. As we already know, Youtube is pushing out its viewers. LBRY can redeem this. Please share this with as many people as you can!

Mere info for nysgerrige.
Yes, but you'll need some LBC for that. Here is few to get started, should last for a while.
You can find from here how to withdraw it from tip bot in reddit to your account in app https://lbry.com/faq/tipbot-reddit

LBRY Inc.can block content from being found via servers hosted by them. And they can delete the actual content uploaded on their servers.
But if you or someone else is running LBRY desktop app and hosting content with it, that would still be available in the LBRY network, and the content could be found in apps that connect to hub-server which isn't blocking the content.(Hub-server used can be changed in app settings.)

> The internet as a whole has been a tool for the government since day one
On the contrary, in the beginning the internet was a haven of actual real free speech.
People could speak freely about the true nature of the ruling class.
And that's why, as the number of regular internet users grows by the million and the billion, the internet has become such a threat to the ruling class.
And that's why the ruling class is taking great measures to implement censorship on the major social media sites like facebook, reddit, youtube, twitter, etc.
And that's why we should consider supporting truly free speech platforms like...
"Library" - https://lbry.com (free speech alternative to youtube)
Bit Chute - BitChute.com (another free speech alternative to youtube)
Gab - gab.com (free speech alternative to twitter)
Voat - Voat.co (free speech alternative to reddit)
Hey there, welcome, and thanks for considering LBRY!
The safest official opinion would go something like this: while we certainly don't require any content except that which would be considered "pornographic" under legal review in the US as established by precedent to have the "mature" tag, as a platform and community of LBRYans we would ask that you mark your uncensored content with this tag in order to provide a consistent experience for our users. Users can opt into seeing Mature content on the Settings page if they so wish. The way LBRY works is that your content may show up on the homepage for other users, even if they aren't searching for it - so my rule of thumb is usually if I wouldn't expect to view something while at work or for those under 18 years of age, it should have the mature tag. Hope this makes sense and not seen as offensive to your cause, because that's certainly not the intent.
We certainly can't and won't ban your content, and you'll find you'd be able to monetize it through our view rewards program (lbry.com/faq/view-rewards) and any tips you get from your fans (at 100%, we don't take a cut!).
LBRY is a place where we want to connect creators with their audience while maintaining control of their content and being able to monetize it. We're still a young platform with not nearly as much viewership as YouTube, but we're growing very quickly!
We have a sync tool to get your content over to LBRY painlessly: lbry.com/youtube
You may need to go back in afterward and tag content as mature since we may not do so properly during the mirroring process (this includes new videos too).
Hope this helps and you've found the answer you were looking for!
You should hit the report button if you think something is not right.

This is where I think that blockchain tech may actually have some real-world application, instead of being just a buzzword. There are some content platforms out there like LBRY which are billed as censorship-resistant. See https://lbry.com/faq/censorship-resistance
Sorry about the trouble, does it happen with all videos?
Where are you roughly located and what's your bandwidth?
It's great that you want to help, but there isn't much that can be done on user side if it is server issue.
Using LBRY desktop app may provide better user experience in some cases, as it can also download videos from P2P network.(You can disable saving of hosting data from setting.) https://lbry.com/get
You will need some LBC to publish a video(or other file). The LBC needed is:
1. Initial deposit/staked amount, this will be locked in your wallet. Deleting the publish will unlock this.
2. Transaction fee, this goes to the person who confirms the transaction of claim creation(mines the block containing the transaction)
These are very small amounts, and needed LBC can be get from rewards in Odysee / LBRY app. https://lbry.com/faq/rewards
You can edit/delete publishes afterwards. This will also require the transaction fee. (Something around 0.0001 LBC)
Deleting the publish/claim will make it abandoned. The recording of that the publish with that name and details still exists in the blockchain, but it should be ignored by well functioning servers. But the file likely couldn't be watched as no one would probably host it anymore.
You probably won't want to upload the recording "as is". Odysee doesn't have any transcoding on upload, so bitrates over 8Mbps won't play smoothly for many people.
Best way to find out what works, is just to give it a try. But it's likely that you can just transocode it to use lower bitrate without loosing quality.(Don't know how low will work)

Your account should get a small number of credits once approved - shoot us an email at [email protected] if that didn't happen.
Not sure what causes those issues. But there is constantly being work done to improve the playback, as it is know to be buffering for many people.
Are you using Odysee.com on the desktop browser?
If so, you could consider giving a try to LBRY desktop client, it has access to P2P network, which should improve the download speeds for some videos. Same account works on both and same data can be accessed from both.It also by default saves viewed/downloaded content(can be disabled from settings) or you can pre-download videos to avoid buffering.
LBRY desktop app is simplest way. If you just want to download what you have watched and seed content while you use your pc. LBRY doesn't currently have any hosting incentives.
https://lbry.com/get
Lbry.com is the place where you find information about LBRY, the FAQs, signing up, etc.
Lbry.tv or the LBRY App are what you use to watch videos, post new content, check your wallet, etc. The LBRY App and Lbry.tv are basically the same thing - one is a web app, the other is a native app, they even use the same code base - although there are differences (eg. App is not multi-tabbed yet).
LBRY is a protocol ... and a community.
1) Both may help - if someone is exploring channels (Discovery page / first run / using a filter), the channel stake will help boost your channel.
2) You can charge for content, that's up to you. Otherwise, anyone can tip you , and we have a view rewards program: lbry.com/faq/view-rewards
3) Looks like you deleted the video - did you click the Delete button or trash can icon on the wallet page? https://explorer.lbry.com/tx/41029ed8781e76a9a768c371e28886f88bdb8d17a1305ed2c5be3bda0f4ff8a3#input-35213915

Glad you are enjoying it and we hope to continue improving/making it easier to use!
> its mostly just for archival as storyfire doesn't moderate or censor people
I've seen a lot of creators set up shop on https://lbry.com/, that would be a much better option for anti censorship than storyfire, which is just Vimeo.
Sorry this happened, know it can be confusing. This is a known limitation since the wallet is stored locally, and part of the sync tool is to merge the wallet data when you sign into your account. There is a warning on the sign out page when you do this.

Not sure how we can better avoid this besides another pop up when signing back in prompting to sync data, but we already show a checkbox to sync data.

We can probably help you restore these - send us an email at [email protected] with the details of the emails.

You'd need to sign out of both accounts and rename both default_wallet files in the lbryum/wallets folder (lbry.com/faq/lbry-directories) . Have you accessed lbry.tv also? We'd need to clean that up separately.
See https://lbry.com/faq/exchanges for the various options. Some of the swap ones support BTC, but don't think they do with debit. We are working on an app solution to buy with debit.
Hey! Have you guys heard about LBRY? It should be perfect for archiving these. It's decentralized and searchable. Kinda like YouTube + Torrent.
There's a YouTube sync program as well that can automatically sync YouTube channels(hence saving the manual effort).
P.S. It's not just for video, it can be used for any digital content.
Same thing applies - there's an option to turn on/off explicit content in settings. This currently relies on publishers tagging the content as such when they are posting it. Eventually the community can also vote on tags/create a web of trust.

So all good there!

well you can claim a channel identity and publish episods of your podcast under that channel. if you are going to use the desktop you can create your channel under the section labeled "Anonymous or under a channel?" you can get more information here: https://lbry.com/faq
Decentralized P2P network to sell any digital format item or share for free. Main use case is videos with the man censorship running rampant but nothing is to stop anyone from setting up a stock photo page, selling programs/games/exe files. Eventually will support live-streaming and soon you will be able to tip "seeders" where people who help distribute your work can get a % cut of any tips you make or ad revenue.
Open source, uses their own blockchain.
Think if uTorrent youtube and bitcoin had a three way baby combining all the DNA. This is what you would get.
Currency is cheap as hell right now at the moment too even if it doesn't go up in value I plan on using tokens to get content once the market gets larger.
I honestly don't know what's going on with BitMart.
This is a bit of a digression, but in one of their quarterly reports the LBRY corporation said that it sold 500,000 LBC to CoinEx for "liquidity" back in Q3 of 2020 (https://lbry.com/credit-reports/2020-q3). I wonder if maybe BitMart is trying to cajole the LBRY corporation into selling it LBC at discount prices before they release LBC to customers' wallets, basically to get a similar deal to what CoinEx got.
There are a lot of shady actors in the crypto space, and I think that some of these exchanges which operate in jurisdictions out of reach for most legal purposes (both CoinEx and BitMart are based out of China) are far from trustworthy.
So, if I was you I would get your LBC into your own wallet ASAP because I think the exchanges are pulling some shady moves. But, that's just my view, could be wrong.
Can you give a link to any of those videos?
It could be that the video hasn't been fully uploaded to Odysee at the time you try to view it.
You can see from log file if it's still uploading. https://lbry.com/faq/how-to-find-lbry-log-file
If it's still uploading there would be lines like ....lbry.stream.reflector.client:141: Sent reflector blob aaebafa2

^(Video length limits: 30 minutes under 500 subs, 1hr under 1K subs, and 2hr for all higher sub counts. Longer videos will be skipped.)
^(Videos bigger than 2GB will be synced at lower quality (720p, 480p, ...))
^(Due to high demand, you will be only be synced if you have at least 300 subscribers.)

I think just installing handbrake https://handbrake.fr/downloads.php
Opening video in it
Setting options as shown in screenshot in here https://lbry.com/faq/video-publishing-guide
And hitting "Start encode" will make good result. I think handbrake has rf set to 22 by default, so output probably would have sensible bitrate without loosing quality.
Hopefully this will help (though I'm not an expert yet):
#1 = How much LBC you have in your wallet. It's not dollars. LBC is the LBRY cryptocurrency. Currently around 1 LBC = $0.02.
#2 = Same figure as #1, just with more numbers after the decimal point. It's also telling you how much of that 2.9 LBC you are able to spend immediately. But it's showing you that you have around LBC 0.001 currently locked into some of your content. You channel and every piece of content you have requires a tiny amount of LBC to secure its record on the LBRY Blockchain. Then you can allocate additional LBC to your channel and content to "boost" it - i.e. make it more likely to be discovered.
#3 = How much LBC that *isn't* being used. If you scroll down, you'll see all the details of where you LBC is being used, where you got LBC from, etc. Currently you can earn LBC by logging in every day and watching videos, gaining more followers, people viewing your videos and people tipping your content. All of that would show in your wallet there.
I suggest you have a browse through the LBRY FAQs here to understand it all more: https://lbry.com/faq
Yeah, Odysee is centralized. Though it's build on top of LBRY protocol and data uploaded to Odysee can be accessed from LBRY desktop app and re-hosted in P2P network.
LBRY protocol is decentralized and censorship-proof https://lbry.com/faq/what-is-lbry
I think there should be option to add another channel. Note that there are some requirements to get channel synced https://lbry.com/faq/youtube#limits
If you have still have problems with it, send email to
LBRY is made up of a few different elements.
Anyone can build an application that can look up the blockchain "directory" and find content. Like with torrents, if there are peers seeding the content you're looking for, you will be able to stream or download it. If there are no seeders, then the file will be inaccessible.
However, at the moment, everything that is uploaded to the network is also saved on Lbry Inc's servers and they make it accessible via Odysee. So when we view something on Odysee, it's coming from these central servers.
Check the https://lbry.com/faq for explanations from Lbry themselves.
Se olisi tämä LBRY:
>In LBRY, the same mechanism (blockchain) is used to store an index of what content is available and how to download it, as well as financial transactions (such as tips, and purchases of paid content) using the Bitcoin-like currency LBC (LBRY Credits). When a creator publishes something on LBRY, an entry is made on the LBRY blockchain. You can think of it as an announcement: hey everyone, I've published this file, here's some information about it, and instructions for how to download it from the peer-to-peer network.
Tämän pohjalta sitten toimii esimerkiksi https://odysee.com/.
Oh I found a channel on Odysee that uploaded some of shiey's videos https://odysee.com/@Freedom:3c I hope it's him, anyway I wish he would mirror his entire channel https://lbry.com/youtube.
Currently all creator/consumer earnings come directly from LBRY Inc., in form of rewards, which are premined LBC, or as in tips from other users.
Mining is similar to Bitcoin mining and published content has no relation to it.
You can read some info about it from here https://lbry.com/faq/block-rewards
Network effect. The largest social media sites are where people are, which attracts more people, which leads to more people, which attracts more people, and so on. Its a really shitty and really important issue in this day and age.
Realistically speaking, almost nobody that is trying to reach a wide audience will choose ot only publish on alternative platforms. They will go where the people are (even if they don't like or are ethically opposed to the platforms/companies), which in turn has the effect of keeping the people there since that is where the content is, its a self perpetuating and self reinforcing cycle.
Some content creators will publish to multiple platforms, one to reach a more mainstream audience, and one for ethical/principle reasons or some other reason. LBRY is the one I hear mentioned most these days.
There is LBRY desktop client. It also has access to P2P network, so it may improve download speeds sometimes.

You can read more from here https://lbry.com/faq/youtube
I am really curious on how this will be enforced. Officially lbry.tv also didn't allow death threats and similar, but I never saw this policy in action. (Edit: they did allow for adult content)
Odysee is based on the same source code, provided by LBRY.com. Or as they say it "odysee.com, the most popular LBRY app. "
You can earn some LBC by claiming some via the rewards page (Menu under your Avatar Icon on the upper right). Depending on your country, you could also buy directly from the site, or use an exchange like Bittrex or others (https://lbry.com/faq/exchanges).
LBRY's roadmap is here: https://lbry.com/roadmap
There's no mention of private or unlisted. But that doesn't mean it will never happen.
It would be possible to extend the LBRY (and Odysee) web app / desktop app video player to sense encrypted content and prompt for a password / decryption key so that it could decrypt content on-the-fly as it plays it. You'd also have to change the upload process to suitably encrypt the content (chunked encrypted data).
If you want to host private content on LBRY, the only option at this stage is to encrypt your content and upload it. People wanting to view it will need to download it and decrypt it.
You'll want to install the Desktop app at lbry.com/get and sign in with the same odysee login.

You can reference the network call that happens for stream create/publish on Desktop or web to get a feel for the data passed: https://lbry.tech/api/sdk#stream_create
Sorry for the downtime, had some hardware failure in the middle of the night. We'll be adding more redundancy too, but this was pretty rare.

good time to download the desktop app at lbry.com/get which would have been unaffected.
Replied on Telegram, but will add here:
We don't come between you and supporters. That's directly the blockchain. You can do self wallet custody on the desktop app if you uncheck the sync option. We can remove our copy if you synced. If you don't sync with us, you won't be able to use the web products.
The wallet server is not related to the wallet itself, it's mainly responsible for providing content discovery (apart from wallet syncing, which is the same no matter what wallet server you use).
I don't think there's any place with them listed, and we're working on making them easier to run which should provide more options.

More information on how accoutns work.
The website
doesn't seem to provide references for what should and should not have the "mature" tag and after looking around other posts on this subreddit, there doesn't seem to be much discussion or consensus on where exactly to draw the line.
So it's up to you to use your own discretion but personally I'd follow the rules that if you think your video could get someone in trouble if they were watching it at work, I'd add the "mature" tag.
Edit:
It would probably be good to ask LBRY inc to provide references for what should and should not have the mature tag.
Or... check the help page and see this article on how to Earn LBC. Which contains a link to the common LBC rewards for different activities on LBRY. Such things like, watching videos, following people on the network, the daily watch reward...
I mean I found that page just fine, I'm sitting on 65.22 LBC right now and have kicked on $0.00 of funding through an exchange. At the default 0.01 stake per video I could upload 6,522 videos right now before running out of LBC. Presuming I didn't hit any other rewards. That is in just under a month-and-a-half of normal viewing habits.
And that 65.22 LBC is with me kicking a 0.02 tip to almost every video I really like.
NewPipe actually supports Peertube instances as well. There's LBRY.com as a good alternative YouTube as well, and they have their own native app on fdroid as well. LBRY's website and app are open-source.
It varies by person and what you are trying to accomplish, and anyone in the community can help you stake as well.
Some more info here: lbry.com/faq/trending
The main costs associated with it are acquiring the LBC, and small tx fees with adding/removing stake.
Are you using ffmpeg to transcode your videos when uploading?
I believe the video will be hosted by lbry.tv and the devices of anyone who watches your video and has the hosting option checked in their settings, so the more popular your video gets, the more places it will be hosted.
Hey there, thanks for reaching out!
1) See lbry.com/faq/host-content - it's a P2P like network similar to BitTorrent, and LBRY also hosts a node to help seed. In the long term, we hope to incentivize the datanetwork so that there are good seeds.
2) Nope, you need to have it locally to be able to seed it. You can just keep the seeded files vs saved content files (see that content FAQ)
3) Yes, that's the best way to do so. You can do it on the content itself or channel page.
4) Not sure what you mean - users can download content from YouTube pretty easily if they wanted to also. See lbry.com/faq/content / lbry.com/faq/dmca for our content / DMCA policy.
There is, but it's only possible via the command line tools at the moment. https://lbry.com/faq/how-to-cli

Have you seen 3D printed pizza? If you hit LBRY, you'll also find the plans for 3D printed guns. Crazy what you can 3D print these days if you can afford it (and don't care about the possibility of breaking the law).
Check out https://lbry.com/ - mainly focusing on Video distribution however it's like a torrent with a UI so you can distribute MP3's, albums, games, apps etc. Hell you could charge a penny and post blog articles on it.
Still very early beta but the client actually is miles ahead of where it was a year ago and the team is really active with support and help if you need it.
that is literally the definition of censorship. they are censoring you from using their platform. we need better platforms. something like https://lbry.com/ makes a lot of sense, I just wish people would migrate.
Luckily only even few LBC can last a longtime.
Don't know what happens for app level blocklists, these mainly prevent access to illegal content, and hide improperly tagged mature/NSFW content. I think the content that breaks Odysee's community guidelines, but isn't illegal, isn't in these blocklists. Those should be only blocked on Odysee.
There is also content blocking/filtering on hub-server. To bypass that you would need to run your own hub-server without the blocking/filtering, or find someone else who is running one. https://lbry.com/faq/wallet-servers
That's part of the upload's unique claimID. You can specify which specific upload you want to access to by appending URL with the claimID, or part of it, as there can be multiple uploads with the same name.
You can find more about how that works from here https://lbry.com/faq/naming
Not really 'comparable' but
Check out LBRY.com its basically based youtube, without censorship, with dislikes, and it runs on crypto..
you can use odysee.com to access the protocols.
and they pay you free crypto LBC credits for watching videos, one time per day
>>Within our app, we will engage in non-arbitrary censorship, meaning only horrific or infringing content will be blocked and removed from our content servers. As a U.S. company, LBRY Inc. and management of our app, and other services in our control, will follow all U.S. laws, including the CDA and DMCA. If someone made an app or website using the LBRY protocol in some other country, it would have to follow that country's laws, which aren't necessarily the same as ours. Either app would read the same blockchain though.
Odysee is seperate from LBRY.
Content that you buy on LBRY is acessable through a LBRY client such as this one: https://lbry.com/get
Odysee has most of the content that is on LBRY, but they censor some stuff so that may be why the content you bought isn't showing up.
I love the fact it shares over p2p! This is a brilliant idea for a decentralised protocol for video sharing, and a great way to bootstrap a video site into existing.
That said, this uses proof of work mining which harms the environment, so it wouldn’t scale very well; proof-of-stake would be a lot… nicer. IMO, the best solution to this problem (the listing of videos and metadata) would be something that works more like Mastodon’s instances, because then you could actually have small local community moderation.
So, this already happens even with IP laws.
Nevertheless, the typical answer given is some sort of certification given to a copy you make (or some distributor makes on your behalf) would act as proof of authenticity and there would be demand for such a proof because otherwise you might not get movies. So, movie theaters would lose out, retail outlets would lose out, etc.
A more modern solution would be something like LBRY (which I personally believe might completely resolve this problem for the digital age.)
I think the radically different approach that LBRY takes to resolving this issue compared to a more classic approach described in libertarian writings just shows how useless it is to speculate about this and base one's support for libertarianism on answering such hypotheticals.
I'm not going to pretend to have answers for how the future looks. Anyone who says they know - whether good or bad - is just full of hot air.
