Do you know why PG&E exists at all? What's the historical reasoning behind the quasi public/private monopoly? We wanted efficiency of larger power plants and no rat's nest of power lines across the city from competing power companies. If the city owns and maintains the power lines, there's no rats nest. And we're at a point now where power generation through means of solar and wind allows individuals to set up solar and wind farms however big or small as they can afford. The need to consolidate power generation into the hands of one giant is unnecessary, and all we need is for a public entity to facilitate the infrastructure and transaction between the sellers and buyers.
Each city builds and maintains their own power lines and facilitates the marketplace between buyers and sellers. Then people can build solar and wind farms wherever, sell their power to cities who then sell it to buyers at whatever markup keeps the power lines maintained and pays for regulation of the sellers.

Didn't Thiel already say that Palantir wouldn't do that?
>I note that several Silicon Valley companies have pre-emptively said they will not help build a Muslim registry for the Trump administration. Will Palantir, the data-mining company of which Mr. Thiel was a founder, and whose clients include the N.S.A., the C.I.A. and the F.B.I., be involved in that? (Palantir’s C.E.O., Alex Karp, sat in at the Trump tech meeting.)
>“We would not do that,” Mr. Thiel says flatly.
Hello, I saw you post last week at r/SanJose, hope they were able to give you some answers..I also read about the guy who biked past there and possibly saw him.
Here's some pictures of the area from a hiking trails website. I don't know exactly where it happened. Did the San Jose coroner's office provide you any updates?

Get a battery powered radio that gets emergency services channels. You ought to have one in your earthquake kit already, but if you don't you should get one as soon as you can.

Once you've got hail involved, you've got a hailstorm. Snow and hail are formed by different types of clouds in very different conditions - specifically hail is created in cumulonimbus thunderstorms. You can have bits of snow-like precipitation in a hailstorm from the ice being smacked around in the turbulence, but that doesn't make it snowfall.

EDIT: Move along people, /u/shaddowbannedpanda IS the Airbnb host (Jon Potter). Check the posting history.
I think the host is lying and i'm calling bullshit. This listing was posted and subsequently removed from /r/sanfrancisco yesterday. At that time, the calendar for the listing was WIDE open. Even now, there is only one week showing as booked for this property, and that is after the listing has gone somewhat viral. There is one solitary review, which is "The host canceled this reservation the day before arrival. This is an automated posting." Cancelling last minute is a big no-no with Airbnb.
The article claims there is so much interest he is turning people down. Bullshit. if that were the case, the calendar would be full and there would be more than one (automated, negative) review. A quick search on Airbnb shows you can actually get a clean private room in MV for $46/night. Frankly, the pictures are terrible and obviously taken at night, and nobody would risk staying in place like that (whose only review is evidence that you could be left in the lurch with NO place to stay due to a host cancellation). this is what a successful bay area tent listing looks like. Notice the reviews, the decent photos, the lower price, and the general "you aren't gonna get murdered" vibe.
This listing, in contrast, is fishy as fuck, and I wonder if this is an attempt to drive traffick to his late-to-the-party cute cat website. Weird-o-rama.

he started at around 11am (10:49). this weather station is pretty close (and i think similar elevation) to where he was found: https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/KCAPLEAS218 . if you punch in july 10tht in the history menu, it shows temperatures around 87 at 10:50 rising to around 91-93 at 11:30, which is when he already was in trouble. then temperature stable for a while. not quite as hot yet, which makes it surprising he would deteriorate so quickly. would have to examine the terrain and his track more closely to guess how different the temperature there was relative to this station.
You aren't running out of oxygen, don't worry.
Get yourself an oximeter if you want to feel more secure. You can just check your oxygen level and that will probably help you feel better: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y2FFQB9?psc=1

I highly doubt this. Surprisingly, most tech workers don't want to be 100% remote.
> the vast majority of global knowledge workers (72%) prefer a hybrid arrangement that combines the home and the office. Workers are far less enthusiastic about going all in on one environment: Only 12% would prefer working from the office all the time, and 13% want to work from home full-time. I think the only real change from pandemic is that companies/careers that have previously been anti-WFH or resistant to the idea will have to start offering 1-2 days a week WFH as a policy if they want to retain employees. There's no longer any valid argument against it, as we've already proven that it works fine.

And I really recommend this book: https://www.amazon.com/Californias-Fall-Color-Photographers-Autumn/dp/1597143170
I picked it up in June Lake a couple years back when camping in early October to enjoy some fall color. More of the Sierras, but the color up there at this time of year is amazing. I personally love the June Lake loop.
Google Opinion Rewards pays you for your opinions on different stores and restaurants. It occasionally asks you for a receipt and opinions on YouTube videos. Of course, you need to have location tracking for maximum benefit. It typically pays about $0.10 per survey but sometimes more.
I've had it for a few years and earned more than $100 over 400+ surveys. I've used it to buy apps and games on the Play Store.

There’s an interesting book on the subject.
https://www.amazon.com/So-Youve-Been-Publicly-Shamed/dp/1594487138/
The author tracked down and interviewed a number of the people who had their bad behavior go viral, such as the PR director who was getting on a flight and tweeted the terrible joke about not getting AIDS in South Africa because she’s white. In most of the cases, the subjects didn’t rebound and get their lives back on track. Except maybe one dude who had no shame to begin with.
Caltrain made a presentation back in 2011 comparing EMUs and DMUs, showing why they decided to go with the former in the end.
To summarize, they chose EMUs due to their still-superior acceleration, compatibility with existing platforms (DMUs would be too long, requiring platform extensions), lower local emissions, and a larger supplier pool.

As a reminder to parents out there from a bay area special ed teacher, we have access to cloth and surgical masks. Please make sure that your child can tolerate wearing one of those if their personal mask breaks or gets dirty and needs to be swapped out. Many students, especially young ones, don't like those masks but that's all that we have to offer. Everyone would rather parents not get called because the student won't wear a mask, so please take the time to work on tolerating.
To help with that, I love mask inserts. These are plastic inserts that keep the mask off the mouth and distribute the pressure around the mouth. We have two types, some smaller ones that stay entirely inside of the mask and some larger inserts that move the pressure out to the cheeks but require a bit larger face so the 1st grader may not like it as much. They aren't perfect, but if you're little one chews on the mask or doesn't like the feeling of the mask on their lips, this may be a lifesaver.
Hopefully, this order is lifted soon, but until then, thanks to all the parents making sure to keep up with the restrictions. It isn't much in the grand scheme, but simply not needing to mess with the morning routine because somebody doesn't have a mask to get one out from the closet can throw things off is amazing.
Computer and phone screens have the same problem. I highly recommend installing flux (https://justgetflux.com) on computers and using a night mode on cell phones to make night time viewing more comfortable.

As for shakeAlert, it is an app being developed by The UC Berkeley Siesmology Lab and the USGS that would warn you in advance about an impending earthquake. The way it works is fairly straightforward. An earthquake occurs, but if you are far away from it, it takes some time for the seismic waves to reach your location. This giving time to send out a warning. This is called "Earthquake Early Warning". It is already frequently used in Japan, and California has been working on it for a while now.
Let's say there is an earthquake along the Hayward fault in the vicinity of Richmond, then it would not be felt in San Francisco for ~4 seconds later, and not felt in San Jose for about 10 seconds later. This app would give you a warning that an earthquake has just occurred and how long you have until you feel it at your location.
Shake Alert does not exist for the public yet. It's not ready for the public because false alarms are considered unacceptable, no one wants a repeat of what happened in Hawaii. However EEW systems like is already in use by BART, hospitals and other emergency services around the Bay Area.
If you want to help in it's development by crowd sourcing earthquake data from your smartphone, you can download this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=edu.berkeley.bsl.myshake
It won't warn you of Earthquakes but it is still pretty cool!
Fortune cookies were invented in San Francisco (little known fact), see http://www.snopes.com/food/origins/fortune.asp
California rolls were invented in LA.
Both became popular elsewhere, of course.
To ship...hmm....I've seen Fisherman's Wharf canned crab meat.
And there are zillions of California wines, such as the whimsically named but excellent (last time I checked) Frog's Leap, or Fallen Leaf.
I've shipped the yummy Sonoma Jack cheese successfully, but of course YMMV depending.

Agreed. Prop 13 is like a curse to most Californians.
Speaking of taxes, I like Richard Florida’s idea: tax land based on a a formula that benefits dense housing. His book: New Urban Crisis
Once a company starts rotting away ethically, they don't care about "top" engineers, they just need good-enough engineers who obey. When top engineers started to leave Google in the wake of Google+ and YouTube controversies, Google could have changed their ways to keep them. Instead, they let the engineers go, there was less resistance to bullshit, and they pushed the remaining yes-men to do even worse shit.
Despite the number of zeros, this is not an impressive amount of money to serve the educational needs of 6 million kids.
That's an average of about $9K per student (assuming a little more than 6 million kids). Good luck buying non-subsidized quality education anywhere for $9K, especially if you have a special needs kid.
Edit: How CA compares to other states in per-pupil spending
If you’re in Southern California, you can have both! Fires in the San Gabriel Mountains above LA lead to slippery slopes and loose soil, so when the winter rains come they get debris flows!
John McPhee wrote a great book about it: The Control of Nature
They blasted his picture out on the BART Watch app this afternoon. I hope this is what got him caught, but they did take their time about doing it.
What happened at the end of the dot-com craze in 2000? It's just the nature of economics: crazy growth like this can't continue forever and usually indicates that something is out of balance with the market's fundamentals. People get greedy and then we get irrational. It's just what we do. It's happened many times before in many different markets.
I don't think I'm being a chicken little about it because that implies a certain amount of panicking/freaking out. I objectively think that what is currently happening in Silicon Valley today looks a lot like bubbles of the past and I haven't found anyone who has made a convincing argument otherwise.
I was going to go into why here but I've got shit to do, so if you're interested give Chapter 2 of A Random Walk Down Wall Street a read. That's what really got me thinking this way.

Amazon order 3m ff401 I think. Then get a few of the combo cartridge filters organic/particulate. Should run you around 200 but your lungs can’t be replaced. If you don’t want to go full face, the the pale blue half face respirator that 3m makes. Both of these are serious business and work very well. Don’t buy small it’s like made for a child. "Winehaven" is how the area is labelled on OpenStreetMap. The area was used to store wine between the 1906 Earthquake and Prohibition. Later the Navy took over the area to store fuel.
>The old Winehaven Hotel was pressed into service for a period as barracks and mess hall, and the workers' houses were renovated for the use of naval personnel. The Commanding Officer of the Naval Fuel Depot was assigned the largest house on the bluff overlooking the others, which previously had been the home of the winery superintendent

Advice for anyone out there trying to use SSH on tethering or other flaky internet connections: Give Mosh a try. It handles lag and packet loss much better than SSH. I've been on connections where webpages would not load at all but my existing Mosh session was still usable. As a bonus, when you switch Internet connections or resume your laptop from suspend, it automatically reconnects within 3 seconds. I was a contributor to Mosh some years back so feel free to ask me questions about how it works.
Now, a rant: Caltrain started working on installing WiFi back in I think 2007. The current claim is that it'll be ready in 2022 with the new electric trains. We'll see if that happens. 15 years...

Programmer who works remotely here. If your companies software operations are A->B->C->D and perfectly laid out and obvious at the beginning of each quarter then you can just have an army of developers not in the bay area and do great. In reality, most startups (even at larger sizes) change directions really quickly in which case managing a team that is remote all the time is really difficult.
In reality, only a couple of new companies have been able to achieve predictability. I say new, because old companies aren't even trying (Salesforce and Oracle is all about BIS for example).
Gitlab is pretty much the only Unicorn I know that's been able to achieve this [1]

Here are some gems:
- 3 Africans escape from the zoo and attack woman on bus
- Everybody hates Jews
- That is a nice picture of Michelle Obama without his wig
- When a Syrian eats too much hummus they get a serious gas attack. All Middle Easterners have uncontrollable fkatulence (wow!)
- People of color can live in huts in their native villages back home in the 3rd World
- Teachers should live in the same housing as their peers. Give teachers a tent and they can live on 12th Street between Market and Mission. Although teachers are generally not as intelligent nor respected as homeless people, the homeless people will probably be kind and allow these leeches to live amongst them
It just goes on and on and on....
Should this guy be reported?
In that case may I suggest a fake version? They have really good ones and then they won't leave seeds all over your house. They shed like a mother fucker which is why they are so good at spreading as an invasive species, but I think it could result in a big mess inside. Transit App has worked beautifully for me. It also includes a ton of other bus and public transportation lines, but if you're looking specifically just for BART, there is an option to turn specific bus systems on or off in the settings, so you can make BART the only visible service.
Lots of suggestions here but Dr. Comics & Mr. Games on Piedmont Ave in Oakland is a great store and pretty convenient to you, right off the 2nd MacArthur exit from 580 coming from Hayward. Convenient parking or BART access? Not so much. Still, you can spend five minutes looking for parking on Piedmont Ave, or at least an extra hour driving to the city and back (if you're going to Divis).
*It is also quite possible to walk from MacArthur BART. About 3/4 mile.
10-20 years ago it was way hotter on average? Bullshit.
Edit: Just taking a very quick look through Weather Underground's historical data for Burbank airport, the current heat wave in the bay area looks abnormal to me even compared to Burbank in the last 0-5 years.

I'm a huge Bernie fan, and a huge Warriors fan, and I loved seeing the two together after his huge Oakland rally. He is a man of the people. Lots of people love the Warriors. Attending that event, though pricey for many, is not a signal that he's 'an establishment guy'. If he was, the media would have covered it. Instead it barely made a splash.
The military uses Boeing aircraft which could be based off any number of the Boeing 7XX selection of aircraft, so it might not be correct to necessarily assume it's commercial.
Having said that, through a Google-related company, the Google founders pay Moffett Airfield to use the base for some private jets, which includes a 757 and 767. It isn't bad as the Cataract Falls trail is the hardest with the stairs and immediate elevation climb. I ran out of water by mile 4 cuz I had to share with another person who didn't bring water at all, and that's in the middle of the loop with limited creek water during the summer. You don't reach Alpine Lake until mile 6 and the first stream that feeds into the Cataract Falls close to 7.8 miles in.

You can get a great one like the A119S for $100 on Amazon. They're a piece of cake to set up and once you do you never really have to touch them again until an incident happens.
Equipment rentals are a ripoff and almost always completely unnecessary. This is especially true of modems. Your rented modem might total $1000 or more over the years, depending on how long you use it. I can guarantee you its not worth anything near that.
Go on Amazon or Newegg and buy a modem yourself. Its a one time purchase of all of $53. There are many other cable modems made by many other manufacturers as well, so feel free to shop around.
Unless you're renting highly specialized equipment you're a fool to pay an ongoing fee. Cable modems are not highly specialized equipment. Buy your own cable modem. It saves a lot of money in the long run.
Buy a few guns, learn to filter your own water, and be cool with eating roots, bugs, and maybe some human flesh every once in a while and you're gonna be fine. The Bay Area is going to be a cornucopia of easy pickings.

You can shortcut a lot of it buy buying the small items on Amazon (torch lighter, Life Straw, etc.).
Keep the tiny kit on your person at all times, the other in your car or in a safe location nobody knows about.
Once disaster hits, you're going to want to get out of the city as fast as possible.
The Bay Area is in no way shape or form ready to absorb the damage from a catastrophic earthquake. Our highways and infrastructure already grind to a halt during rush hour.
And remember when the vineyards were on fire and the human garbage came from all around to loot the abandoned homes? Those are the types of people you have to worry about, because they'll be attracted to the carnage like flies to shit.

Also simply refuting one point of the many I made doesn't make you win an argument. And nice reductionist argument, trying to put words in my mouth. Do you agree with genocide? Does any sane person in America believe in genocide? Does anyone benefit from allowing people to advocate for genocide? The answer to all of those should be or is, emphatically, no. Ideologies which advocate for genocide aren't something I just disagree with, it's what the Constitution disagrees with. Everything else about the Constitution denounces and tries to prevent ideologies that advocate for genocide from rising to power. It's wholly incompatible with American and western democracy, and the Constitution should never be analyzed piecemeal - it should be analyzed as an entire document. That's how the Supreme Court analyzes it.
This is awesome - I didn't realize the origins of so many foods & drinks could be firmly pinpointed in California.
A bunch of icons to indicate food, (non-alcoholic vs alcoholic) drink, etc... would make this visual really appealing to look at. The Noun Project often has good icons representing things, if you haven't heard of it. And you can generally use any of them as long as you provide attribution like in the corner or something (or you can pay for the icons and support the artists, but it's not necessary).
Not at all necessary to give them icons. I just figured it'd be neat to skim the coastline and see little drink icons alongside the names of the drinks, or whatever.
While it does have a degree of charm, it would look so beautiful without wires everywhere. I know PG&E is going to bury 10,000 miles of it. Don't know if SF is in their scope.
I'm planning on going to see a drive-in movie at West Wind Solano, provided they get something new in by then. Spongebob and American Sniper aren't particularly romantic. Put down the back seats, pop a foam mattress in the truck with some blankets. Bring a ton of popcorn and candy and a bottle of wine. It's going to be great!
Only after 6pm July 3rd.
In the past they used to do it 2-3 days prior. That's what OP was probably referencing.
It's just char siu pork but cut into smaller pieces prior to marinating/roasting. I would try regular char siu first.
If you are okay at cooking, try this (available at most Asian supermarkets in smaller quantities). Use boneless country ribs cut into smaller pieces then marinade. It's very spot on according to my East Coast friend.
I moved here from Indiana 8 years ago and haven't found anything that really compares to Potbelly (my go-to was a Wreck on wheat with everything except onions). The predominant culinary influences out here are Asian (Chinese, Korean, Indian, etc.) and Mexican, so you'll be hard-pressed to find a good Italian-style sandwich with hot pepper giardiniera like Potbelly. I've considered buying $40 of hot peppers from Amazon to put on sandwiches at home since it's just impossible to find here. My husband's from NYC and constantly complains about how there are no good delis here since he's used to the Cuban and Jewish ones back East. Don't even get me started on what is considered a hot dog out here.
After living here for a while, you miss home, but you learn to appreciate this area for what it is and the food it has. Try a banh mi from a sketchy Vietnamese shop! Or some Dutch Crunch bread at Ike's or the Sandwich Spot and avocado all of the things! Or a German deli sandwich from Dittmer's! If you do happen to stumble upon an awesome Potbelly-like sandwich, please let me know though. I did get a little depressed the other day when I spent $13 on a panini that WASN'T EVEN PRESSED. /firstworldproblems
Competition is actually real [Competition is already in stores.](www.amazon.com/dp/B076HQM86P/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_WUuzFbEX3FGBH). Already in the BezosMart

If you're really that worried, order an AQI Meter of some kind and check what your houses's internal air quality actually is: https://www.amazon.com/Temtop-LKC-1000S-Formaldehyde-Pollution-Temperature/dp/B076F54XG8
The air quality inside is probably not as bad as you think.
I had the windows open all night while it was ~75 AQI outside and then sealed the windows two hours ago and I have an air purifier running. My meter is reading 7 AQI right now.
I’ve had a huge ant problem and tried multiple ant traps with no luck. This product here. I do not make, work, or am sponsored by this company nor amazon, I was not paid to write this. This is just a product that worked for me.
Hello! No edge seaming drives me insane - It's just not finished without it, ;)
Have you tried this stuff? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0876R8CB5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It's my favorite, and it never gets scratchy even with longer use.
I love seersucker so much - and it's so perfect for summer. I have some on the way from Amazon that was priced really well. Hopefully it's actual seersucker and not some crap. I'm getting so tired of Amazon sending garbage.
Time to get back to sewing - I'm on a mission to fill up my USPS bin with mailing packages today!
Good luck with your search man, that's such a shitty feeling.
I say this so everyone else can hopefully avoid such a heartbreaking scenario: Google Photos will back up all photos in the background (unlimited storage at 16MP quality), and there are a couple good text message backup services that will back up regularly to cloud storage- I recommend SMS Backup and Restore
You can check balances with Farebot:

Wow, scrolling through their tweets shows they have been getting attacked everyday for over a month. It's all they post about.
EDIT: I have found a solution. I downloaded a free VPN client from Hotspot Shield. It works perfectly.
No signup. Didn't even ask for my email.
It appears that it will be free for 3 days, after which I will be asked to upgrade. Sure I will, lol.
Attempts to install an extension in my browser. No thanks.
Glanced over the T.O.S., it will inject ads into webpages. It will probably monitor my browsing habits as well.
Use this for 3 days and then delete it. Jump to another free VPN if the imgur problem persists.
Enjoy Reddit like a boss. Happy surfing.
I use Mr. Number [Android | iOS], I usually ignore all calls that aren't on my contact list unless it's someone that might actually contact me or I'm expecting a call. It's handy since it auto hang-ups on known spam calls and you can check a number that has dialed you for user comments, and you can block numbers so they auto hang-up after one ring.
I normally check the number to see if other users report it as telemarketing, robo calls and etc. the app flags the "Chinese Embassy" scam calls as "Chinese Embassy" rather than outright block them though since it seems they use a bunch of numbers or number spoofing for the scam.
I'm reading A Random Walk Down Wall Street right now and I have to say the author's description of past bubbles really fits current SV to a T. Granted, I'm not an expert, but experts aren't experts either until after the fact. There were experts who thought Worldcom was a great idea and that Enron was going to be the biggest corporation in the world and that housing prices would always go up.
But to think the current level of money sloshing around in SV is going to last for anything close to a hundred years sounds, shall we say, irrationally exuberant.
In case I get accused of schadenfreude here, I'm not hoping the bubble bursts, even though I do think that it will in the near-ish future. (There's too much money and too little accounting transparency in the VC-backed world for it not to.) It would be nice for it to cool off a little because that could help take the pressure off BA housing costs, but there are always broader, unforeseen repercussions in any downturn.
> the card is merely coding a database key and the balance must be stored elsewhere and not on the card itself
That's not true. There is data on the Clipper card, not just a key. You can scan your card and get cash and trip information from it. I used FareBot when I had a phone with NFC.
Here's a really good site listing hikes. You can add lots of filters including rating, length, and tags like views and forest.
