Blades get dull, just like your kitchen knives, and will fail to cut cleanly or might catch and tear paper. For a while, I was spending a fortune on Cricut brand “premium” blades... then I came across these: EVISWIY Cricut Blades for Explore... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KYJKF52?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I’ve since bought the large pack of red standard replacement blades and am really pleased with the results. They last just as long as the brand name blades and I don’t lose sleep over replacing them as soon as I see the smallest change in cuts!
If you’re just using it for design, I recommend affinity designer. It’s about $50 for desktop license and it’s comparable to Adobe illustrator minus the subscription. Affinity Designer
I do all my work in Inkscape (inkscape.org). It's free and open source. I calibrated my exported svg files by making a 1 inch square, import to Design Space, check reported dimensions, adjust Inkscape's Document Properties - "Scale" values. 72 worked for me.
My fave font for this is Euphoria script. For anyone who's not aware, Google actually has a huge library of fonts that are free to download and can even be used in commercial applications (eg, products you sell)
https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Euphoria+Script?category=Handwriting#about
Haha that was rude of me!! It was an experiment to see how it reacted to the ink and I think it worked perfectly! Just be sure to use one of the brighter or richer toned inks.

Not OP, but for curved surfaces, I use a heat gun instead of my iron. I like the pen-like deisng, but they come in more gun like shapes more commonly. I've been experimenting with HTV on ceramic mugs, and that heat gun is a lifesaver for that process.
You should have an ink jet printer. I us the HP instant ink and it's perfect. The cricut is supposed to cut around the image, I have trouble with mine not lining up even after I resent the machine, so I cut it by hand with an exacto knife.
There is paper for dark colors and ones for light. Make sure you're using the correct ones for the shirt color.
This is the printable vinyl I use. I've tried plenty and found that this is the best. Don't go cheap.

You're very welcome! If you only want a sticker of her face and have a picture of her with a plain background, I would suggest using https://www.remove.bg/ to remove the background before putting it in photopea/design space ! unless you like the photo look :)
Thank you! I used this LED strip behind the layers and drilled a hole in the back to get the wire out, so it can plug in.
My wife and her friend swear by this particular product. However, double check that it would work with the Joy since both my wife and her friend have an Explore
Illustrator is expensive for occasional hobby use. Inkscape is a very popular free drawing program that creates SVGs natively. If the OP is willing to spend some money, Sure Cuts A Lot is cutter dedicated software that works with SVGs and has cutting specific features.
I bought this one off Amazon. The reviews I watched on YouTube sold me. It is less expensive, comes in a few different colors and has a slightly bigger footprint to cover more area. It is still a palm sized iron and doesn’t take up much space and holds the heat evenly. HTVRONT Heat Press Mini Heat Press Machine for T Shirts Shoes Hats, Small Heat Press Mini Iron Press for HTV Vinyl Projects& Heating Transfer(Dark Green) https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B08T6TRXXT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_E0PT16CFSCKC4ZK4FH7B?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
As for the vinyl, I’ve never personally been happy with the Cricut brand removable vinyl, but it might be good for practicing at that price or for things you don’t want to be on permanent. I just find it harder to work with myself, I think it sticks ok.
I think for the money a Heat Press is the only way to go. It can do so much more than an iron or cricut presser. Those are small and you have to use pressure, make sure you don't move it, move it several times for larger designs on shirts. This is the one I bought. It will grow with me as I grow my hobby. I will never have to buy another one.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01ANF8GZW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I used an iron on the first couple of shirts I did and they started to peel after several washings. This one gives you everything that the circuit press does, but a lot more. It is fun learning to do hats and cups, but I use it mainly for shirts for my family and friends. Best bang for the buck.
I have done cards with vinyl, jewelry with HTV, shirts, bags, socks, pillows, etc. I would not trade my heat press for anything. If you have the room and can spend just a little more in your budget it is definitely worth the cost.
I originally ordered these and they were great so I decided to try to make my own with some leftover plastic sheets I had from making stencils. It was a bit annoying to cut the material but it looks and works great! I’m using it for my philodendron Brasil :)
4-Pack 3D Night LED Light Base,... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07XD6XYXX?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
That’s what I used just don’t use the acrylic that it comes with as a test blank cause is too tough I guess cause the cricut would cut it for a bit then throw an error.
Oh one more item that is in the same family, the 12 x 12 folio just a simple handled bag. I use mine for things that are too heavy for the others I listed like chip board.
I bought these adapters on Amazon. Now I can use sharpies which I like.
You can find all sorts of adapters that people 3D print on Etsy too.
I have all those things and decent storage, so in order if I were to be surprised with something next level it could be any of the following:
I would love a crafting table
One of those 5 in 1 presses that you can do mugs, t-shirts, tumblers, hats, etc.
A sublimation printer would be great!
There’s this stuff for jewelry engraving that’s like a black ink, you basically paint it over it and then rub it off and it fills in the etched crevices.
I found this one on Amazon which is in marker form.. same idea though. I would assume you could use a regular acrylic paint or ink in the same fashion.
The Cricut Easy Press is pretty portable. There is also a small version of the Cricut Easy Press 2 but that would be best used for smaller projects.
Amazon sells travel cases for the EasyPress which are super cute. She might like that if she’s planning to bring it places.
I definitely think the heat press pillows are worth it too especially if she will be traveling around. It will also make it easier for her to work on projects at home.
Yeah, I figured you would have tried an SVG if you could. Maybe try convertio.co ? I haven’t used it myself, but see it mentioned a lot in cricut circles, and it looks like they have a dxf to svg option!

Have you looked on Amazon? I searched “laser sticker paper” and got a lot of results.
This is the brand I use. I have had the exact same issue with the regular cricut transfer tape in the past, so I started using this one
Angel Crafts Transfer Paper Tape: Craft Transfer Tape for Vinyl Application with Red Grid Lines - Self Adhesive Transfer Paper Roll Compatible with Cricut, Silhouette Cameo - 6 Inch by 50 Feet, White https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R3NTLJ8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_W6QX1X22D2S12HVQXQNC
Most reputable brands will have some sort of branding. There are Blender Bottles that have words the same color as the bottle so they look almost blank. Or a few with small decals that you could cover up. Personally, I would just add my own decals to my Blender Bottle despite the label.
Here's a blank one I found:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08XC312QJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_900KSTAXRVQYP8NEA50Q
I don’t have one, but if you plan on continuing to make cups I’d say go for it. If the cost of ordering the cups is more than the materials & cups themselves then you save that and could potentially profit off of it if you continue wanting to make them. Also, I have seen other people say they’ve bought non-Cricut branded mug presses online for half the price and that might be a better idea if you’re wanting to save some money and don’t necessarily care about it being Cricut brand since it seemingly does the same thing.
Here’s one I found on Amazon.
I just did this too, except mine was the side kind (link below). I can fit 5-6 rolls in each “slot”. I grew out of the one like you have, but it worked for me for a long time, great job!

Wonder if a little bitty iron would work?

I did this for a Christmas gift (covered a book shaped safe), but I did not use my Cricut at all. Since it’s just a rectangle, you can cut it with a straight edge and x-acto or Olfa knife.
I worked in Photoshop and Illustrator and got a large format print from a shop near my house.
The one place the Cricutting world helped was that I bought this Oracal clear laminate that I put over the print out. This made it look really professional in my opinion, and I might not have known about this material if not for folks who put it on their stickers on here.
I bought an actual heat press machine. 5 in 1 because I’d like to also do sublimation at some point.
This is the one I purchased (it was around 185 when I bought it) because it was close in price to the largest of the easy presses and is more versatile. I haven’t used the attachments yet but I’m happy with the plain press part of it.
What transfer tape are you using? I found this stuff here on Amazon that works much better than the Cricut brand transfer tape.
I bought this one off Amazon https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07XCNBT8K/ref=cm\_sw\_r\_tw\_dp\_MIp.Fb5HS3KAA?\_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 .
I find that it takes colour extremely well, and the adhesive is quite sticky. Once I misaligned the sticker and was able to remove it and reposition it without the stickiness being compromised. One thing to note is that it is quite difficult to remove the sticker from its backing unless you have something thin like a crafting knife.
Yay!! Reach out, I'm happy to help.
I purchased my 3 inch blanks from amazon. A redditor posted these and I like them more.
It's a little tricky lining them up. I used the 3 inch.
To create:
Add a 3 inch circle tmplat, move it to back, then design (engrave, you may have to do it as draw) inside that, when you do make it, it will move it to the top left.
This is what sucks. I peel off one side of the film from the disc, then move the image in DS to the center of 6 x 6 try to match the image. I wasted one as a tester. I just keep this to check alignment on new cuts. It takes adjusting.
I also left the plastic film on my mat and tapes the disc to that, all the way around so it doesn't move. Once cut, if it's off, I move my image on DS, not the mat. When I remove it, I pull of one piece and I remove all the shavings with it. I then remove another piece, and I left the disc trying to leave the tape so that I can just put a new one in the same spot.
This is what helped me.
As I offered, reach out and I'll help if I can.
Amazon is pretty great. This is a pack of 8 for $15, but I know they have larger sets too!
Doesn’t it?!
I got the set of all 3 tool sizes with 3 small rolls of foil on Amazon for ~$61. They are about $99 for all three at We R memory keeper’s site and at other craft stores. A single tool is ~$40.
We R Memory Keepers 660579 Starter Kit, Multicoloured https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0011NB4G4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_OD32CbZYDFEQM
I never leave Amazon reviews, but I might in this case. The price seemed too good to be true, but they came and they work great so far.
Looks like you need transfer tape to move your cut vinyl as one piece.
We are currently using this tape from Amazon :
TopVinyl transfer tape 12”x30’
After you have weeded your vinyl, apply your transfer tape on the design. Use a squeegee to press the tape on the vinyl for multiple times. Now start peeling the tape slowly, it should lift the design with it. If some parts of the design don’t come with the tape repress that part again and peel it one more time. After you have the tape picked up your design, apply it on your substrate. Press with a squeegee for multiple times then start peeling the tape slowly and in 180 degree angle. You should be able to to peel the tape alone while your vinyl is sticking on the substrate. If some letters remain attached to the tape repress that part again and peel it one more time.
I’m bad with formatting but I posted the links for both! I got them on amazon! I’m happy with how they have turned out. I have a press but used my iron on them. The first one I did I turned the iron up all the way, it was too hot so if you use an iron med-high setting would be best. (Top right koozie wrinkled from the high heat) The black roll of HTV I used works great on T-shirt’s too, through several washes so far.

It's the only vinyl I've worked with so far but it seems to cut well. It slips off the backing a little too easily when weeding but that's my only complaint. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0819CJ9MP?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Yes!! They're Nicapa brand, right now they're $13.99 on Amazon for three standard grip mats. I personally think they stay stickier and somehow cleaner for longer than cricut brand... They occasionally leave a little residue on the back of materials when they're brand new but it's very easy to rub off with your fingers!
You could try taking a picture of one on a white sheet of paper and then use Design Space to trace it.
If you want more precision and are handy with a drawing app, try Inkscape. It creates SVGs which can be imported directly to Design Space.
You might try a combination of the two approaches: trace a picture in Inkscape, edit the tracing to get the precision, then import the SVG into Design Space.
If you check RetailMeNot, you'll see there are two coupons - one for free (standard, 8-12 business day) shipping, and another for 10% off your entire purchase (expires on Nov 30). I do believe they will stack.
If you're getting the everything package, Cricut's probably the best place for it - I didn't see that package anywhere else when I was looking, and the price for it is pretty good compared to what you'd pay separately for everything on Amazon. As long as you're ok with the longish ship time, I'd do that.
This led me down an internet rabbit hole. If Inkscape has too steep of a learning curve try https://vectr.com/. It just clicked around with it and it seems really easy to use. I'm going to suggest it to my wife who finds inkscape too complicated.
Edit: Its also browser based so you don't have to download anything.
I bought these at the recommendation of somebody else on this sub. I haven’t had a chance to try them out yet (my current blade still works pretty well) but they have great reviews and seem super sharp!

I've used craft plastic for making stencils. It is very sturdy. I can't remember the setting for sure, but i think it was a stencil setting on a new strong grip mat. My design was very intricate and it worked well. I can't remember how many cuts, but at least two. Definately do test cuts first. It was a slow process. I used my Explore Air 2.

Good old fashion Elmers glue stick :)
https://www.amazon.com/Elmers-Strength-School-Sticks-Washable/dp/B079W5335F/
I used a toothpick to transfer the glue from the stick to the paper, sounds bad but goes really fast!
i use an epson expression premium xp-7100 and for this project i used this printable vinyl :)
Make sure you're changing the paper type in the printer. I have an Epson printer that is also meant to print photos and I usually select a premium photo paper as my type.
I also really like this brand of sticker paper for glossy stickers. I haven't found a matte one that is my favorite although this same brand isn't too bad.
I’m still new to Cricut, but I’ve been using these and they are great. They came highly recommend. You can watch a comparison video and cleaning tutorial from makersgonnalearn.

This is sooo much better than the cricut brand. I seriously almost threw my cricut stuff away after this arrived. I managed to keep it, but tucked away in a drawer for desperate times. Trust me on this, a perfect stranger, you'll love this brand. It's the right level of sticky, it's amazing.
Also, you didn't ask, but this is perfect for weeding! Just put it on your finger to just scrap the little vinyl bits off and keep on weeding.
It's fine, I've cut several of mine. And you can buy replacements off Amazon fairly cheap and they're almost too sticky! I have to put them face down on carpet when they're new just to get them to calm down! 😆
It’s good to see a fellow hodler here. My wife bought this transfer “tape” and it works great:
Well there's also Armor Etch that's used for glass. It a chemical reaction that leaves it frosted. Only works on glass tho i think.
Don't give upp!! If you have a printer you can also get printable heat transfer paper (I prefer the kind intended for dark fabrics regardless of what I'm using it for), upload the graphic you want to put on the hat into Design Space as a print then cut file. Print it then cut it out and press it onto the hat. You wouldn't mirror it before printing, though.

I’m in the US and I bought the holo vinyl on Amazon. But there are a lot of options on Etsy as well.
I would add to also leave negative reviews on their Amazon page. Warn new buyers that may not be aware. https://www.amazon.com/Cricut-PC2004195-Maker-Champagne/dp/B072VYPWM4/ref=sr_1_2?crid=HVC6RF00O6A7&dchild=1&keywords=cricut+maker&qid=1615832883&sprefix=cricut%2Caps%2C158&sr=8-2

It was inexpensive, good size, and had good reviews. It has worked well for me!
I use this. It was just the first thing I found on Amazon, but it has worked well for me!
It's basically like a notebook sized (or you can get them larger) skinny flat light to provide backlight for projects. The brightness of the light on most can be adjusted as well. My husband bought mine as a gift so I'm not 100% sure but I think this is the one he got and I love it. Especially for HTV it really helps to see the cut lines for weeding. If I picked out another I would get one that is battery operated so it didn't have a cord/have to be plugged in.

I haven't used water but application fluid for large vehicle graphics and it is a life saver. https://www.amazon.com/RapidTac-RT-10321-9-Vinyl-Application-Fluid/dp/B006RUG9XO/ on small stuff I haven't found it to be totally necessary, but nice to have.
Hello! I did give this a try with my stylus tool and I'm not sure if it was because I was using faux leather or if this method in general doesn't work but... it didn't work. The letters did show up right after I was finished, but then after several minutes it was slowly going back to normal. Again, could totally be because this was faux leather and not real leather. Same thing happened when I tried to use my stamping letters and mallet.

Good luck though! Hopefully someone else has some experience they can share to get this figured out.
So I'm fairly new to cricut (I got it in October) and the same thing happens to me. I also notice the rotary blade can leave deep cuts in the mat. I started using the standard grip mat after awhile and a lint roller to try to get as much as I can off, but eventually it ruins the mat. I buy these off brand mats from Amazon and find they work really well. $10 for a 3 pack isn't too terrible.
Also adding I have issues with tiny pieces too.
Seville Classics Large 10-Drawer Multipurpose Mobile Rolling Utility Storage Organizer Cart, White https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0049X4TSS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_xGjEZR56EHqVB
I have this one and it fits 12x12 sheets!
For a paper and card stock user, my main recommendations are:
A brayer as another mentioned.
A pack of assorted refills for the fine point blade like this.
Adhesive runners. I like these because you can buy the refills, and they are very strong. I’ve seen them at Michael’s and Walmart as well. You may also want one that dispenses small dots, for curves or small details, Michael’s Recollection brand has one.
You might like to get a foiling kit. I use the infamous Foil Quill from We R Memory Keepers, but you might like the Cricut kit for this, esp with a little one around (the FQ uses a heated stylus).
I almost exclusively use standard grip mats for cardstock. Some folks swear by light. I would see which your favor and then stock up on some extras.
I agree about attachments for other brands of pen.
Vector design software. Inkscape is powerful and free.
A decent home printer or print shop nearby that you don’t mind hitting up if you want to incorporate custom printed photos or artwork into your work.
I use the Iris drawers. They have wheels on so they can go wherever you are working and they fit right under your table or counter top. https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00IITMO3Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_imm_t1_U3W-Fb67TWS2H?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
However, I have never spent more than $50 on them. Costco used to sell them, and Michaels usually has them.
I have a scrapbook paper storage tower I got at (I think) Hobby Lobby many years ago. It’s metal with plastic shelves that snap in. It wasn’t super expensive, has wheels, and used all at once or just part of it. I don’t use the wheels anymore, it’s sitting on top of a low shelf but it’s held up well. I don’t think Hobby Lobby sells it anymore but this is an almost identical item from Amazon except mine came with three cubes instead of one.
https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B06XTDDFP8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_dBW-FbYEP99CG
I thought about getting one of these.

They sell a transfer tape on amazon that’s basically a large sheet of masking tape. It barely sticks at all tho so you have to figure out a good technique for getting the vinyl to stick to it (I find peeling the backing off the vinyl and leaving the transfer tape flat works best.) the masking tape stuff doesn’t damage anything and the vinyl comes right off of it when transferred.
I use this transfer tape
Hey, I use adhesive runners almost exclusively. I like these because you can buy refills.
For small stuff I use a similar runner with small dots of adhesive, Recollections brand from Michael’s if you are in the US.
I just purchased this PowerPress about a month ago and love it! It’s great quality and the same size as the largest Cricut brand Easy Press. Plus it’s so much cheaper, even with a Cricut sale. I would definitely recommend it!

I have bought a smaller type from Amazon.
This is only 6" wide and has grid lines. It's worked well for the decals I have made for our car club and the grid lines help with lining up the stickers for application.
I bought acetate sheets from Amazon for making stencils. If they're small, you can just hold them on, no need for the adhesive.
I got them from Amazon
However I feel like you could find them cheaper elsewhere!
I ordered Oracal 651 from Vivvid last Nov. Absolutely zero problems. I got 10 rolls of Oracal 651, a roll of clear transfer tape (vivvid brand, I think), and a toolkit (squeegees). I saw reviews that were conflicting on whether or the they received the transfer tape and I didn't have any yet so I messaged the seller to ask. They were very prompt and professional in their response to me.
So personally, I have had a great experience with this seller and the products they sell. Maybe bc it was Oracal, not HTV. Maybe bc it was a year ago.
And I just went to my Amazon orders to double check and I see that I am able to buy that same product from the same seller right now.
I'm sorry that you had a bad experience.
If you are still looking for Siser,
this is the multi color pack that I bought:
Siser NA EasyWeed Heat Transfer Vinyl, 12 x 15" 12-Color Starter BUNDLE https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0127RTOYQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_r.NaCb7ZESZ0A
And this is where I buy rolls:
Siser EasyWeed 11.68" x 5yd Roll (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01INYI8WG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_3aOaCb412B3XZ
Those are the best prices that I've found and have always gotten quality product.
Good luck moving forward!
It was a cheap brand off of Amazon that came in a ten pack (link below for what I use in my classroom). But, my caution is they are black, so you’ll have to do a second cut of your color choice of vinyl and apply the vinyl on top to get the color you want. The other option is to get adhesive magnetic sheets and apply the vinyl over that, so that the vinyl is sticking to the adhesive, so like double the stick power.
Good luck! Post pics when you’re done. I’d never considered doing it for our mailbox, such a great idea! People are so clever.

I have no idea what printer we have but I can ask my boyfriend. Haha he picked it out and I just went with it. For sticker paper I’ve tried two kinds. The one I like doesn’t seem to be branded...? It’s this one: 30 Sheets, Matte White Sticker Label, Laser/Inkjet Printing - Letter Size (8.5" x 11") https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07T1HRYL5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_qYcyFbNR3ECBM
These are in silver, but the same:
The black ones like mine are now $28
You can look for 16inch folding brackets. They come in pairs. :)
I use these adhesive runners! They sell refills for them as well, which I really appreciate.
For small bits I use a “permanent dot” version by Recollection’s, Michael’s brand. I like that brand, but they don’t sell refills, so I only buy the dot one as needed.
I've been using this: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B073XRLZ6Z/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_6QfgFb8BSG4RQ
I've been using it to transfer temporary vinyl to glasses and it's worked well so far.
Cons: it comes in a big roll without backing paper so it takes a bit to figure out how best to get it on your project. I wasn't actually successful until my third or fourth try.
Pros: it's huge, it's cheap, and once you get used to it, it works really well. I haven't had any issues with it releasing.
rainbow opal vinyl pack I got this pack on amazon and it has all these colors in it. Right now they aren’t sealed. I don’t know how to do that yet either. It is permanent vinyl, so I was letting my friends know to just hand wash. I just got my cricut in March, so every project is a learning one for me, too :)
Honestly, I got it on Amazon because it wasn’t that expensive and the reviews were good. It was super easy to weed! Here is the link

Thanks! It's a lot of fun! I used these tiny foam stickers from Amazon. I stacked them to get more distance on some of the layers, because they are only a few mm tall.

I can’t get it to link on mobile but I ordered this from Amazon. It only took 8 passes on the basswood 1.6mm setting. The first cut I let go about 10 times and it almost cut all the way through my mat

I was just gifted this one and I really like it. In addition to the normal stuff it also has side handles and tells me how much pressure I'm putting on the press so i can tell if I'm being consistent. Also there is a $15 off coupon you can click.
Cricut brand sucks emitting signal to devices tbh. I use this one but not for cricut, but for a wireless controller. Still, should work.
