One of four nights Miles’ innovative electric group opened for the Dead at the Fillmore in April 1970. You can read more about it in Phil’s book Searching for the Sound and also in Miles’ autobiography. Some more details here.
Performances from these nights are officially released on Miles’ album Black Beauty as well as on the Miles at the Fillmore instalment of his Bootlegs Series.
The Dead were always influenced by jazz but by their own account, Miles’ performances around this time had an influence on the Dead’s evolving improvisational style that would bear lots of fruit over the next few years.

I've recently found a nice copy of 70/05/15 Fillmore East shows, where the dead played 2 shows on the same day, each with an acoustic set. In the 1st set of the late show, Pigpen plays a couple of songs on acoustic guitar - She's Mine and Katie Mae. I don't know how well travelled these shows are, but I definitely enjoyed hearing some low-fi Pigpen, which I've somehow avoided until now.
These shows have a lot of Pigpen numbers and they're all well performed, especially Easy Wind, Katie Mae and Hard To Handle:
I'm also a fan of 68/02/03 Crystal Ballroom's Schoolgirl. You also can't go wrong with 71-08-06 Hollywood Palladium's Hard To Handle.

The 15th anniversary celebration shows at Folsom Field, Univ of Colorado with Warren Zevon opening. Three song encore one night and a two song encore the next??? Alabama, Althea, and Saint of Circumstance all played two nights in a row?? Phil absolutely leading things on the show opening Uncle Johns-PITB-Uncle Johns?? Killer 2nd set version of Althea?? Egad man, these were nice shows and we rarely hear folks talking about them!!

The most out of nowhere jam I personally saw was the so-called "KY jam" out of He's Gone at Louisville '90 - it's filler on a View from the Vault and I'm surprised I didn't see it on YT. A scorcher!
1990 was a good year for pre-drums jams particularly out of Terrapin. We got what, 2 or 3 in spring, 2 more in summer (Shoreline and Pittsburgh)...
Fall '79 was another time they were dropping into crazy shredding open jams in the pre drums slot pretty often...out of He's Gone (that continued into '80, Saint, other tunes too...great stuff...

Avalon Ballroom 1968-10-12 is a show I first heard in 1990 so it's been a part of my life for 24 years now and really brings me back to my own early days as a deadhead. For the longest time it was the only decent sounding '68 in circulation and was incorrectly known as "10/13/68". Great Dark Star - developed way beyond where it was at the Shrine shows in August. I'd like to see an official release of this show but I don't know if there's a copy in the vault. I think all recordings we have are from the FM broadcast.
I think this was one of the band's most consistently well played tunes, all versions are good to grate for their era.

This is my friend's video! He taped a ton of shows at the vibes and they all turned out quite well...his recording of DSO in particular sounds amazing.
Probably the Dead at MSG in 2009. It was a really, I dunno, magical feeling being in that room again with those guys. Everyone in the crowd wanted to be right where they were. The 'He's Gone' is a good listen, especially today.

My favorite Shoreline shows I saw were the '87 with Maggies > Cumberland to open set 2 (set 1 is excellent as well) and the run in '90 as part of the killer west coast Cal Expo - Shoreline - Autzen sequence. One of the Shoreline '90 shows is a View From the Vault DVD release, probly on YT, a beautifully played and fascinating second set with a long China Rider and open jam out of Terrapin

I'll second this. Can't beat books sourced by people who were there. I just finished Dark Star and am about to dig into Steve Parrish's book. Dark Star was a really neat biography of Jerry that used snippets of interviews with most everyone in Jerry's life.

Went and had a nice BBQ dinner before seeing the Symphony Orchestra this weekend, it was very fine, very fine indeed. Some very far out sounds in an excellent concert hall, and hopefully you had a fine weekend yourself!
I don't really have very strong feelings about the "segmented" Drums / Space that came about from the late 70s onward, and much prefer the spontaneous drums and jams of '71-'74, my favorite of which is evidenced on April 29, 1971 ("Alligator"-> "Drums"-> "Alligator"-> "Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad").
For regimented, sturdy "Drums" / "Space," my favorite is handily the Miami '89 segment that "Dark Star" melts into. As far as atmospheric, eerie "Drums," I don't think that the Rhythm Devils were ever finer. Prayer bell-like chimes co-mingling with the huge, fat wide frequencies of The Beam and a variety of other sounds to create a truly unique and awesome soundscape that blends into "Space."

As far as Umphrey's goes, I'm no Umphreek, but I do enjoy them from time to time. I find their vocals off putting sometimes, but they make up for it in instrumental talent. For relevance to this sub, check out this Help/Slip.. I'm playing through [their Red Rocks show from this year] right now and am really digging the longer tracks, which is usually how it goes for me with this band. On End of the Road from this show, Jake Cinninger used Jerry's Travis Bean TB500 guitar, which is kinda cool.
Oh man. I have such a good/bad memory from those shows.
The two (non-musical) things that stand out:
1. The floors were sticky as a motherfucker by the end of each night.
2. On the 12th, there was this drunk motherfucker who was yelling out "SHteLLLa BluEEEEEEEeeeEEe!" three seconds before John... every time. It's moved into folkloric status with my show buddies, e.g. whenever we're annoyed by someone near us you may hear a call of "SHTELLa BLeueeeee" :P. I'm actually listening to see if you can hear him on the SBD now... haha
'Course the music (especially that night) was great, and that's all that matters right?

Any AUD tape that 'gets' Phil is a beautiful thing - suffice it to say, this tape is a beautiful thing. The transition from Miracle to Shakedown is entertaining to say the least - there's a bit of a stagger, but Mr. Lesh makes up for it by just bombing the bejesus out of the place.
The Terrapin is sweet, the Playin' lands in a couple of interesting places, and the jamming out of drums takes a distinctly Serengetti turn, too.
the 3rd night from that run in Boston, Fall 94 was fun. The Eyes is mellow almost to a fault, tho - the spacey-spanish-jam exit out of drums/space was interesting. The 1st set has a good Peggy O, Brown Eyed Women, and Let it Grow going for it.
the March 95 Spectrum show w/ Unbroken Chain wasn't exactly...good...by any stretch, but it's one I still listen to occasionally just to relive the "Hey, that actually just happened" moment.
Most of the attention on 10/1/94 gets pointed towards the Help>Slip>Franklin's, or the Scarlet>Fire, but I always make a bee-line for So Many Roads.
The last night at MSG, fall 94 shoots out of the gate with a ragged but ready Stranger and Bertha. So Many Roads again, and a Brokedown that never fails to give me a warm fuzzy. Just pretend "If the shoe fits" isn't there, it's best for everybody involved.
While there are some instrument separation issues/muddiness, it's still pretty clear this is a recording made by somebody with access to put mics where-ever he wanted, without risk of a roadie hacking cords. Other One is roughly 20 minutes long, with 'rollercoaster thru bedlam' weirdness and several nice jam nuggets.
After the Dew, there's a truly beautiful Tomorrow is Forever to be had, too. What? Quit laughing.
Have to agree with you on 7/27. The unrestrained love between the band and the audience was really quite something. I watched the stream live and remember laughing with total disbelief every time they went back into Tweezer! And that Catapult—>Slave...holy shit. The Jennifer Dances. The unfiltered, unabashed joy of it all. Kind of what Phish is all about.
Phil's Cap shows were also fucking sweet. Particularly 9/21/14, which is probably my favorite GD-related concert of the year.
Here's the show. At the end of Fire you can hear them starting to get a little crazy. Weir is a little nuts on his guitar, Jerry gets into it a bit. Definitely worth a listen. Make sure to listen to the beginning of Dancin' too. Weir is bonkers.

Actually one of my favorites. My favorite Alligator jam has got to be 8/23/68 though. Seriously, if you have not heard this, you are in for the treat of a lifetime. Honestly some of Jerry's most beautiful guitar work, even if the phrasing is a little rough.

I have a cassette somewhere with a grate unexpected jam out of Black Peter - I believe it's from Wisconsin 81 or 82.
Off hand I don't recall the date but Market Square Arena IN, I thnk in 1976, has a very spacey jam in the Help Slipknot Franklins. There are other examples of H-S-F's that open up into unusual jams from this era.
Some of the Fall 79 Terrapins have some unusual spacey sections but I don't know if these are developed enough to qualify.
One of the unusual jams I saw was the so called Caution jam 5-6-81. Check out the New Haven show from the same tour for a somewhat similar jam. As Mr C has alread pointed out in this thread, pre-drums jams were sort of common in the 79-81 era.
Other unexpected jams that I saw were the pre drums events at the MSG sept 90 run with Hornsby. I'm sure there's more but they're evading me at the moment.
11/1/79 deserves more praise. it's the longest scarlet fire, and it is really non-stop. he entire show is tight and you can feel the energy that Brent brought from the getgo with Jack Straw. Not often I see Promised Land lead into a setbreak either

It's a real show. Here's an audience recording to prove it's not bits and pieces of other nights. It's certainly the best Scarlet > Fire ever, and St. Stephen > NFA > St. Stephen > Morning Dew is exceptionally powerful. Jerry's out of this world with one majestic riff after another. I wouldn't call it the "best show ever" though. I'm not a big fan of some of the first set song choices or the encore.
Well, actually, there was a four-night run at Fillmore West, but this is one of the best representations of that run (and the Dead set is also available in its entirety.

I honestly have never heard one, its super consistent like you said. I think it really worked all around for the band. If anything, Ive been hooked on this one and some others from 82 and so when Brent opts out for a more piano-y sound. Also for this song I think it works so well because jerry can take it nice and slow if he wants to

Jerry opts to get thickly wahnasty for this Stranger - actually, all throughout the evening, he seems raring to go. Sugaree gets squirrelly, Loser is amazing, Jerry takes a beautiful turn at Candyman and manages to make Brokedown cry.
There is a board for this one, and I suppose it's passable, all things considered, it just doesn't do Jerry justice. Listen to the tail end of Loser from both sources - on the board, that solo sounds like an annoying insect in your ear - on the aud, it sounds like Jerry pierces the fabric of the universe.
Or, maybe that's just my kink showing again.
Another fall 72 AUD with the sound of Bear about it - this one has some analog gens on it, so there is some fuzz present. Bertha has some moments of distortion, and part of NFA and Uncle John's is sourced from an even higher gen cassette. Playin's first few minutes are cut - so it joins the jam already in progress, deep in melty boiling bubbling madness. This Truckin' stretches out and jams for a good bit, finding that "Nobody's/Truckin'" place frequently. China> Rider (of course) smokes, Box of Rain is nice, and Jerry gets down with his badself for Greatest Story. There's also a sweet Bird Song, but fair warning - there's a cut, and a bit of distortion.
So far as I know, this is all that circulates of the evening - at the least, I suppose we could hope for a closer-to-the-master tape showing up sometime.
Zevon's Transverse City & the Neville Brother's You're the One come to mind. He's also on some early Jefferson Airplane, Grace Slick, Peter Rowan stuff etc.

here is a live meters mix from 1975-76, their peak era (or, as close to it as you can find decent quality bootlegs of)
The mix is more than a little Phil heavy (fair warning to those with a lot of bass at your stereo's disposal. This may shake shit off the coffee table), but guitars and keys are nicely distinct and clear. The Cassidy from this night smokes too, Jerry nails the high wire act jamming in the middle. The second set has the first Crazy Fingers since 1976, and some interesting jamming in the NFA.
This is one w/ no known soundboard, but several different AUD versions - I'm fairly sure the one that is claimed to have been recorded by Healy is this recording w/ analog gens on it.

Missing so far are two simply fantastic nights at the band's home port for the first half of 1968, the Carousel Ballroom. Bobby's playing, in particular, these nights is amazing. Whatever impelled Phil's campaign to kick him out of the band later that year, if Weir had played at this level every night, he'd have found a welcome spot in many other bands.

Of the two shows I saw during that period, she never took the chance to bust it out. Despite the obvious fact that I was in the audience. Sheesh! Women!

Today's AUD offering is kinda rough - there are without a doubt better 1970 AUD recordings out there - but it's the only tape we have of the evening, so I figured I'd just post it with the 'if you want to hear it, this is how it sounds' caveat.
Good Lovin' is still in the 'intro>drum solo>Show Band' arrangement, so there isn't much in the way of Pig rap to be had - the post drums rockery just sounds like they were having fun, tho.
Sugar Mag and Candyman suffer from cuts, but not much is missing (Sugar Mag is cut at the beginning, Candyman at the very end). This recording is also the first Truckin>Other One to survive on tape (there's a setlist with those two consecutively about a week earlier, however the tape cuts and omits that -> part, if it happened.) that I can find, at least. Hard to Handle borders on the sloppy, but frig it. It still sounds good.

Anyway, I'm betting most of you are intimately familiar with the next night's recording from the same two fellas, might as well give this one a spin too - Other One rages, Mr. Charlie bops, and Loser is beautiful. There's a tape cut to start GDTRFB, but most of it remains.
Apparently, Harv and Craig didn't keep track of their master tapes - what we have of both 8/5 and 8/6 only exist because Rob Bertrando managed to finagle some trades with them in the early 70s - whatever exists from both night's AUD recordings, we owe to Mr. Bertrando keeping track of shit. Thank you, Rob.
While you're at it, the other Canterbury bands are great too. I really like Hatfield & the North, Matching Mole, Pierre Moerlen's Gong (after Daevid Allen had left the band), and Robert Wyatt's Theatre Royal Drury Lane live album is amazing.

I couldn't really cram Playin> Crazy Fingers> Playin Jam> LR Rooster, Dupree's> BIODTL, Must Have Been The Roses> Playin Jam> Let it Grow> Day Job (set break) Shakedown> Playin in the headline, so 'big-ass sammich" had to suffice as a description.
This one is an 82, with all that entails - some wandering moments, Phil is kinda there, kinda not there, etc. Brent manages to save Bobby from strangling Rooster with his slide. The encore for the evening is the first live Touch of Grey, too.
There is a soundboard for this show, but it sounds jacked up. Near as I can determine, Frank Streeter's recording is from a patch cord ran to Healy's mics at the board - the board recording just linked sounds like those microphones are being used for 'room' sound in the mix. Either way, it could just be my kink showing, but it seems like the guy with the raw mic feed got a better recording than the fella with access to the board...even tho they were probably standing 3 feet apart.
This AUD recording is notable for what's missing on it - the audience. Other than some hoots and hollers to greet the song, the crowd is just smacked into silence with that first golden chorus. This may be a little slower than you might be used to, but it works.
The whole acoustic set is worth a listen, and there are some fiery moments in the electric set too - Jerry has some fun with El Paso, and lays down some liquid between the lyrics on Candyman.

There are occasions where we have multiple great tapes for a show, this is one where we have a couple that are good enough to listen to, and hope for something better. Probably worth mentioning, the SBD uses a less-listenable AUD to patch To Lay Me Down.

I use this: https://github.com/jantic/DeOldify, which is a machine learning library. The process is hard to get setup and you need to understand Python to a reasonable level but once that's done it's quite easy to play with.
Render times, even with a decent GFX card, are pretty long though.
Great way to share music with other heads, online JQBX (https://www.jqbx.fm) is kind of like radio but it's user generated so the mix tends to flow better and be more diverse. Must be a Spotify premium user.
