I'm not sure if it's well known now, but Watch2Gether is amazing. You can make a room and watch YouTube/Vimeo/Twitch videos at the same time. It's great fun with a few friends in a Skype call.
If you want to sync it up you can use platforms like watch2gether.com, then everyone with the link sees the same thing. I've seen it used in other fandoms and it worked pretty well.
I will be starting this playlist at 4:00 Central Time for us all to have a special podcast of our own, to just sit back, cry, and enjoy the wonderful content Monty has given us over the years. If you have any suggestions of videos to add just let me know, i'll keep the playlist running so long as there is even just one person watching with me.

Heads up, you guys can use something like https://www.watch2gether.com to deal with the sync issues. That way viewers will only need to sync at the beginning and you guys are always on the same page. You could even enable webcams and/or do them live if you felt the urge. Another tip is having quiet instrumental music in the background so you can silence stuff in the commentary that you don't want without having awkward pauses.
Just some suggestions. Really enjoyed the commentary. Looking forward to the next one.

I like the idea of episode discussions. It adds more to understanding what the hell is going on, which is probably necessary with the goofiness that is the first 17 episodes of Double Zeta. Whatever you decide to do though? I’m on board.
I currently have over 12hrs of music and various environment sounds such as storms of different intensities and in locations, camp site ambience, town & village atmospheres... Sharing that would take a long-ass time. What I will recommend is the website https://www.watch2gether.com/?lang=en for aspiring and current DM's. You literally copy + paste links from YouTube once you've got a 'Room' set up. If you're playing online, all you have to do is share the link. If playing IRL... Well, it just functions like any other playlist and comes out your speakers. Y'know, neatly cycles through the playlist of music one after the other, no muss, no fuss. And you can have multiple playlists for different types of music.
Also, as an addendum? You can have more than one 'Room' open at a time. I commonly have one tab open for Battle/Thematic music and another open for Environment sounds and effects so I can play them in-sync.
Discord has screen sharing and voice chat. Lots of co-op games on Steam. I ran across a browser add-on for Netflix that would allow multiple people to watch the same show together, you could pry find it by googling. I've been using Watch2Gether to run some Youtube parties.
Don't need to spend a lot of money, especially when a lot of people have uncertainty with their jobs right now.
That sucks. I would try asking if he wanted a break. Just because there is distance separating a couple doesn't mean giving up. If he isn't willing to work through one of the hardest weirdest times of our generation than he isn't worth it in my opinion.
My boyfriend works a lot but we both work from home and hang out the majority of the work day. Then game ALL evening together. Distance doesn't have to be hard. Find things that you can do together online. Interacting on different levels is a key part of bonding. Some ideas:
Games. This includes things like pictionary and a whole slew of things you can find to interact with.
Plan out the time you do spend together so you get the most out of it
Make things for each other. You'll spend the time thinking about the other, and then you'll have something memorable to share later.
Really, get creative and think about things you can do to make your time apart interesting while still engaging.
I misunderstood the question. Thought you were looking for ambient sounds. I can't think of a great solution for sharing music..
Maybe watch2gether or something like that for listening to soundcloud together.
Maybe a free shoutcast server for uploading and streaming your own music playlist.

Yes, music definitely enhances the experience. I use Watch2gether so everyone hears it all at the same time. Video game music, especially when looped, is perfect. I pick a different series/theme for each area the players are in (spooky music for the Shadowfell, epic for the human capital, etc.).
I've been DMing exclusively on Roll20 since I took over a campaign I was in right as COVID hit. My players have said they really enjoyed environments that they can manipulate (e.g. bridges they can blow up), which is easy to do if you set part of the maps as tokens, even if they're on the map layer and so only you can move them.
I also do a running soundtrack through Watch2gether, which has made for some fun moments.
Finally, you can bribe them to roleplay and/or take notes with inspiration or magic items. Just don't load them too much with the items--I learned that the hard way!
Hi! You're an amazing friend for trying to be their for your friend. Sometimes those with depression don't want to talk about it as there's not much to talk about and their life is already engulfed in it. If she doesn't need to vent, then the most you can do for her is to try and give her a little bit of a distraction from it all. Keep her company, maybe watch something together through Netflix party or Watch2gether. Talk to her, call her, stay in touch and direct her attention away from the negativity in her life!

Video calls can really help when you're apart from loved ones. I remember using this site to chat and watch YouTube together too:
You have a private chat room and you can both add videos from YouTube and I think other video sites too. Basically you can both create a play list of videos, songs, etc. But being able to watch or listen and chat in the same window is nice. You can take turns sharing music or put on some old nostalgic cartoons or something like that to boost his spirits.
We also used to share Netflix or watch a movie and do a countdown so we were watching at the same time. It sounds stupid but it's the next best thing to being able to watch together.
Make him a play list on Spotify and send it to him. Write him letters and take a picture of it. Anything that feels personal and just for him.

There is a chrome plugin called Netflix Party. https://www.netflixparty.com/ It's fairly simple to use. You just find a movie/TV show open and pause it. Click on the app icon (should be in your extension bar in the top right of chrome) hit start the party and then give your friends the URL it spits out. They join it then also go to the icon and hit start the party and they should be in sync with you then.

Sorry about the Nugs.net Highstream 420 yesterday. I thought it was going to be super awesome but it was just okay and at some points not great. We'll be sticking to our original plan of Dead and Dead adjacent program only from now on! You cannot replace the Grateful Dead, even if you try hard on 420.
There are specific bots that can play songs from YouTube videos on Discord chat. I'm not sure how to set it up, but I'm aware it's possible, because we use it in our campaigns. Usually just a command with a YouTube link and the bot starts playing the audio.
We actually have two bots, one for music and one for ambient sounds.
If you mean you want to actually watch a video together, and not just the audio, then you can get everyone in the same Watch2Gether room. I suppose it does work for music too.
Have you explored any of the video conferencing software that exists?
Check out Jitsi, 0if that won't work then you could install OBS locally and install IceCast either on your computer or on a vps somewhere and stream the content that way. If you do a test run you can figure out the latency between you and the girlfriend so you don't spoil anything. Alternative would be to stream to twitch or youtube live you could probably even stream to like a streaming cam girl style porn site if you want to try to hide under the radar.
It would be much easier to use Youtube or Netflix and then a site that lets you sync them. A couple examples

I would also recommend some podcasts, especially if you’re also working from home. Welcome to Night Vale has a load of podcasts on all major platforms and you can start listening to any episode and still enjoy it, although there can be some continuity at times.
Netflix recently added many Studio Ghibli movies to their collection, and if you’ve never seen a Ghibli movie, you’re in for a treat.
I’m currently playing Animal Crossing during these times, it really helps with the isolation. Watering the flowers and talking to villagers really eases the cabin fever.

For music, it's not perfect but we use watch2gether You can make youtube playlist and Switch easily between them. The first préparation is a bit long but after its nice. Everyone will have the same timing juste be careful to begin a new track when the last player connect on your salon.

There are quite a few sites to watch YouTube together. My boyfriend and I use watch2gether or togethertube. You don't need to install anything just create a room and send the link.
For Netflix we either use not so "legitimate" sites or a desktop app called Parsec. We mostly use it to play games together but occasionally we might want to watch a Netflix series and can't find an alternative link to it online.

That's a very good question, I don't know as I use music on Roll20 but some of the DM's that I've played with have used Discord bot instead. There are sites that allow some of the functionality, like https://www.watch2gether.com/ or https://www.sync-video.com/
https://www.watch2gether.com/ works well for yt. Supposedly also works for soundcloud but i've never tried that. I've used it several times to listen to music with friends and would recommend it!

For the video watching, it might work better if you use https://www.watch2gether.com/?lang=en It's a website that is made for long distance group watching and makes everyone watch at the same tome in the room your in. It does sou d fun but got raids at that time
There's also http://www.sync-video.com/ - I haven't used it personally so I have no idea how well it works, but seems to be doing exactly what you'd want it to do...
We've made it, the final day of the marathon! Today, the dub room will go live earlier than usual to bring some extras, which include the very first pilot of the show and the 3DS Special! After that, we'll begin broadcasting the episodes at the normal 3:00 schedule until episode 100 is complete. The sub room will begin broadcasting at it's normal time.

On iOS, you're able to use the website https://www.watch2gether.com in Safari. From there, you search for the video you're searching for or put the URL. Once you find the video and start playing it, close out of Safari (you must go to the home screen before locking/sleeping) you bring up Control Center. In Control Center, go to the music section and click play. After that, you can freely lock your phone.
It tends to work 95 percent of the time (personal experience).
I don't believe that playlists are supported, but they might me.
Websites like that already exist: CyTube or Watch2Gether, for example. You can create your own room, open it for the public or friends only, and link to videos on sites like Youtube/Vimeo.
Yeah I figured as much. Would be cool. Our DM has soundtracks and plays them on watchtogether with us, but being able to play certain sounds on command in a server (like the fighting sounds for combat) would be neat. It could be something to creator might look into if they find it interesting enough.

If you're looking for something less agonizing, maybe The Bible: In The Beginning... (1966). I recall it being well done, but it's now a bit dated and I probably haven't watched it in near 20 years.
On a related note, if there's something streaming on YouTube it'd be pretty cool to do an online screening of a movie with the BR fans using a sync up streaming service. I like Watch2gether myself, but there was a 2nd one that I'll look up and link here
Looks like Watch2Gether has an API where you can embed a chatroom into a website. That would probably be your best bet. I doubt anyone has built a plugin that does the same thing (and if they did, it would most certainly be a premium plugin).
