FINALLY!!! First day I got Amazon Music I tried searching for Tool and this is what I got...WTF is this?
I of course settled for some A Perfect Circle but I need me some Danny Carey.
Opeth is my favorite band and this song is one of my favorites of theirs. You may know that they've been performing an acoustic version of this song for a while. That version is fine, but a really cool version is the one they did recently where they did acoustic for the first half and electric for the second half. This is courtesy of /u/kronikwankr. You should also check out /r/Opeth if you like the band a lot.
Here's my top albums of 2017, and here's my top EPs of 2017.
I cover a lot of underground stuff, finding a couple of gems here and there.
My best ones this year that you could be interested are :
The Ancient Mental - Philomath
Jonas Tamas - The Four Seasons - Part 2: Summer
In the Presence of Wolves - Of Two Minds, Stages 1-2: The Ape and the Cage
Sleep Token - Two
22 - You Are Creating: Limb 1
Fox Territory - Degressive Fusion
Paper Shirt - Fragmented Body
Have fun!
Check out this academic paper written on Meshuggah titled "Re-casting Metal: Rhythm and Meter in the Music of Meshuggah". For full disclosure, I've never read the whole thing and many aspects of it are way above my head, but it'd probably be an interesting read if you've never come across it before.
I'm not sure if the I EP is addressed specifically either, but thought it would definitely be worth sharing.
There's also this quote from Thomas Haake that's interesting:
>Then we had to chart everything and go bar by bar to record the guitars afterwards, because it's all just random.
Yeah seriously. I am really happy that they at least remade froggin bullfish because, well, its a really awesome song.
edit: link so people can see how awesome it is http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=6088412&q=hi&newref=1
They have some on Amazon.
Rate Your Music (though it looks to be down right now) is where I go for reviews normally. Everything's structured very cleanly, the ratings are out of 5 stars, reviews tend to be only a few paragraphs but some go more in-depth and ramble a bit. There are also comment boxes on releases where people write shorter observations or reviews.
The lists and discussions linked to each release are also handy if you're looking for similar artists/albums, though there are a bunch of shitty "Favorites from ____ year" lists that are pointless because you can easily filter someone's reviews by year/genre/etc anyway.
Also, you can follow reviewers, so if you find one whose style you like you can just follow them and check what they've reviewed lately. Their reviews also get pushed to the top of the review list so you can find them more easily.
Hope that helps!
I don't feel for listing all my top here because it's already done elsewhere.
I use foobar2000 and simple last.fm scrobbler
while I do recommend the foobar2000 in general, it's not required for the scrobbler, it seems to support rather wide variety of players. (the store page has a list of supported ones)
I'm not aware if there's any single app solutions for this. but who knows
First of all, Russell Allen is a total boss.
Secondly, does anyone else hear the airship music from Super Mario Bros 3?
Reading around for the opinions of likeminded people on new (or old) releases on RateYourMusic. Friending interesting reviewers will have their newest reviews pop up on your page, which is neat.
I have a list of quite a few albums here.
Some of my favorites:
Ayreon - The Source
Vangough - Warpaint
Mors Principium Est - Embers of a Dying World
Nokturnal Mortum - Verity
I use these. These are nice because they do not muffle the sound, they just bring down the volume to a tolerable level and filter out the harsh frequencies, all while maintaining sound clarity. They are also comfortable for me and never fall out. They come in a little case too so they are convenient to put on my keychain when I need them. I never go to shows without them! There are lots of similar ones like it on amazon, your local hardware store sometimes, and even at local musical stores as well.
If you cannot get these or something similar, I suggest you at the very least go with foam plugs. Better to protect your ears for the long term than to go without them just to briefly experience better sound. It is not worth it going without plugs for better sound for one night in my honest opinion. Your inner hair cells (that contribute to our hearing) are very few and do not regenerate; once they're destroyed, then they're gone for good and your hearing will slowly go.
I was disappointed by a lot of my favorite bands new releases this year, but I still thought this was one of the best years for prog metal in a long time. A lot of really good to great stuff and In the Passing Light of Day is my favorite album since Bilateral. My top 10:
Rest of my rankings are on my RYM page. Top 25 are all stuff I REALLY loved this year.
My top 5:
I have a full list on RYM here.
Very much looking forward to the rest of the year, seeing as the first half has been pretty great.
Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman! (Adventures of a Curious Character). One of the only books that has made me laugh out loud multiple times. Seriously, every situation he describes is brilliant and hilarious!
So terrible quality and all that aside, it's cool to hear all the ideas from the song in a completely different order. In this demo version, you can hear at 1:30 a bit of the solo that eventually appears at 2:35 of the album version. Also just how everything is stretched out longer in this demo version, then with the electronics and heavy section at the end that didn't make the album cut.
On a side note, I've found a couple other early clips like this (I'd posted another one recently, but if any one else has stumbled across more material, would love to hear it.
RateYourMusic has the ability to create lists but it doesn't track changes in positions. I was doing it manually for a bit but then my list grew so large I didn't want to do it anymore.
For reference, here's my list last year. Earlier in the year the albums also had a "Previous Ranking: __" note https://rateyourmusic.com/list/zedowns/2017-album-rankings/
> reinvent a new wave of black metal
Did they, though? What I mean is, sure they are one of the best known bands in blackgaze, but they are far from being the first ones to do it, or "reinventing" black metal as you so put it. Additionally, calling Deafheaven black metal won't go over well for people, and I think you know that. :P
Give South-Korean Jambinai a try. I've only heard their 2016 album but at least there they play a curious blend of post-rock and atmospheric sludge metal, with generous usage of Korea-specific folk instruments and themes.
Ah, the drums switching from 6 to 4 at 2:00 is very Tesseract sounding. I'm pretty sure he's cited Meshuggah as an influence in the past.
And the best part about jazz? You'll be able to find Tigran playing on a ton of different records. His playing on Ari Hoenig's Lines of Oppression is particularly awesome.
I've always though the pacing of this song was a little weird, especially compared to most of the songs on the rest of the album. A bunch of material presented in the beginning, then a couple of much longer drawn out ideas for the middle.
Anyway, here's some supplemental material! Guitar playthrough: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9hj9nTV2P4 Tabs here, if you want something else to look at while listening: http://www.songsterr.com/a/wsa/pomegranate-tiger-new-breed-tab-s388929t0
Sorry about the tab link, they used to have a dropbox link up with gp5/pdfs in it, but the link is dead now.
He is also playing live right now! http://channel9.msdn.com/
Some of the parts are really fresh lol, even though it's just a demo.
Edit: I think it's over :( But it was really cool. Did anyone else watch it?
Really quite underground but these guys remind me a lot of both of those. There's a ton of related shit to Frost like Darwin's Radio, Kino, Lonely Robot, but none are quite as good.
For stuff that's like IQ, Pendragon are the closest, as well as 80's era Marillion. Check out Men Who Move Mountains and Misplaced Childhood first.
I'm no professional or anything, but I dropped a review for the album here! It's easily among my favourites from bands new to me from 2018. :)
The Optimist isn't bad, but it is Anathema's weakest album since the debut for me. There's a couple of excellent songs, those being Endless Ways, Springfield and in a slightly lesser capacity, Can't Let go, but otherwise the album is mostly just decent. I'm not head over heels for Distant Satellites either, so Anathema definitely took a turn for the worse after Weather Systems.
//My full review if anyone is interested in a more thorough explanation.
Came to say exactly this. RYM is my go-to to find some stuff with torrents site and some facebook pages. Shameless plug of my 2017 list which is exactly what you're asking for
Oh I know the background. There are two songs on the album that are absolute career highlights: If This Is the End and The Passing Light of Day. The amount of emotional resonance the album has when it is at its best is staggering.
Regardless, it's still their weakest album. A strong 4/5 stars is a damn great album, and it is a testament to the band's importance for me, when even at their worst they are still this good. No matter how well I know the circumstances in Daniel's life and no matter how much it's a "return to a former sound" (hint: it isn't), if the songs aren't there then they just aren't. Silent Gold is Daniel's worst composition to date and it pains me to hear a Pain of Salvation ballad that I don't like. Full Throttle Tribe goes on a few minutes too long - the cacophony does nothing for the song or the album, it's just useless padding. Tongue of God is fillerish and the chorus is somewhat irritating. Daniel's vocals on much of the album are a bit meh; it's Ragnar in fact how steals the show on many occasions, such as in On a Tuesday and Meaningless.
I love the album, don't get me wrong. But "Remedy Lane pt. 2" it isn't.
//Here's a longer, better articulated review if you're interested and have the energy: https://rateyourmusic.com/review?id=86414312
I'm with you. The Source is bottom 3 Ayreon for me, ahead of only Actual Fantasy (pretty bland at times, and lots of failed experimentations) and Universal Migrator (Arjen-goes-Europower didn't pan out as well as it should have, though there are a couple of killer songs). The Source is very good, and I'll be listening to it a lot in the future, and already have, but there are lots of fatal flaws to it that I just can't ignore. The story is the #1 reason, as you outlined. It's pretty ridiculous actually, you could probably fit the story on an EP-length record without all the padding, looking back, looking forward etc. The songs reflect the rushed story somewhat, there are a few filler songs and very few songs actually stay good from start to finish - there's often a moment or two where the song falls apart.
The best songs, as in songs that are great throughout, are: The Day That the World Breaks Down (fantastic, varied opener), Sea of Machines, Everybody Dies, Into the Ocean and The Human Compulsion. Songs that have top-tier moments diluded by lesser parts include Star of Sirrah, Aquatic Race, The Dream Dissolves, Deathcry of a Race, The Source Will Flow and especially Journey to Forever, which has the absolute best thing on the album, the folky verse right after the intro combined with the magical violin lead.
If someone is interested in a more detailed write-up, here is my full review. :)
Well we know DTP is headlining ProgPower USA in Atlanta next Sept, so I'd expect a full North American tour in the fall -- with new material from the next DTP album hopefully!
Hey man, good stuff! Reminds me of Protest the Hero quite a bit (This is good, because they're awesome.)
I'd be interested in taking care of drums if you want. I'm a session drummer from Orlando Florida. If you want to hear what I can do, I'm in the Viking Death Metal band Sons of Ragnar. I have a home studio I use to record my sessions in. I did our last album with a couple friends running the board while i performed in said studio.
I also do half of the writing and all of the song structures for SoR because know a fair bit of music theory. I hear a lot of great things that I could do with this music. I also know a few fantastic session musicians who would love to work on something progy for once. Hit me up if you're interested.
Here's the same thing, but with EPs this time.
I'd say my favorite release so far is The Ancient Mental - Philomath, followed by Concatenate - The Tragedy of the Self and Paper Shirt - Fragmented Body.
Other nice releases are Mazze - Zeal, Solipsismo - Sangre Antigua and Fox Territory - Degressive Fusion.
I've only included underground bands as the most popular ones are already listed in the thread.
This song was original released on an album called Guitar Battle and featured a number of other guitarists each with their own solo. In this version, Petrucci is just playing them all, hence the continual shredding. Impressive nonetheless.
I would nominate a person on the web named Kartmaze. He makes makes what sounds like prog-metal if you played it through an NES or Gameboy. He makes fucking 8-bit prog-metal.
https://sites.google.com/site/benthesharp/downloadallthismusic!
All the stuff under this name is here as 3 separate downloads , if the link doesn't work for whatever reason just go to the Cloudkicker blog and click the link near the top of the page entitled "BM SHARP MUSIC." Link to blog below
Enjoy, I got more love from this than many many discs I paid for.
If you're wondering here are the time sigs in Activation Synthesis Theory which has more changes but not more unique ones http://www.songsterr.com/a/wsa/blotted-science-activation-synthesis-theory-bass-tab-s382167t6
I found a couple of enjoyable instrumental prog groups while going on Pandora adventures at work.
Anabiosis - Good guitar work. The recording of "Singularity" here is older and not very good. If you like the style and want it presented better, create an Anabiosis station on Pandora and try to get some of their songs. Worth the effort.
The Fucking Champs - This band is silly. They are hilariously fun to listen to. Some of their work has been done with even less instruments than you might be used to. One of those bands you listen to when you need to feel awesome. Not in the Scale the Summit way, but in a lulzy-over-the-top way.
http://everynoise.com/engenremap-djent.html
Hypno5e is lower middle.
If you're looking for "hypno5e, but more avant-garde," clickk around on the avant-garde genre map until you find things you're into:
I have a list of interesting metal artists, a lot of which are underrated prog-related stuff. The final Crimson Massacre album is a supreme mindfuck and a personal favorite. Same with the Winter Bestowed EP, but that's nearly impossible to find (PM me if you're curious).
Some stuff from there that's relevant:
Cadaver - In Pains
Embrionic Death - Stream of Solidarity
Nomicon - The Me
Wicked Innocence - Omnipotence
Beheaded Zombie - Счастье для всех
Mass Psychosis - Necroporno
Neglected Fields - Splenetic
e: also, not on the list (will add), but Pavor are really worth checking out. Very ahead of their time, astounding bass. Highly recommended to fans of Anata or Necrophagist.
But there's a LOT more there that may interest you. Feel free to explore - I'm also still adding items, like, constantly so check up on it once in a while for more :P
If anyone's interested I can make a separate post for this list, it's something I've spent a lot of time making into a useful resource and I want to give these obscure gems the publicity they deserve.
I had that problem too. If this one isn't working for you, I posted the Pandora stream earlier yesterday, and that one seems to work just fine.
EDIT: Here's the link if, like me, you're too lazy to go sorting through previous posts: http://www.pandora.com/station/play/2853881953254102603
Out on Deezer too: https://www.deezer.com/en/album/93165402
The album is VERY good! It was really a surprise for me that past singles are not the strongest part of it! Just listen.
Personally this track does something for me with the one dynamic but i see where you're coming from. I will definitely pass on your critique. Might i suggest checking out a different song of his?
not impossible if you slow it down to a tempo that you can play cleanly. It's great practice imo. You can change the tempo without changing pitch of tracks with Audacity.
You might find this very interesting.
Anyway, Deconstruction as other have said. I also really, really, really love Ziltoid.
Yep, its called lovesong, and he had it on his soundcloud but deleted it. Thankfully he also had another account or a link account or somthing on soundclick. Also I found it :D
There was a book about the history of progressive metal that was quite good, but I had some difference of opinion. Still it may well serve as inspiration
https://www.amazon.com/Mean-Deviation-Decades-Progressive-Heavy/dp/0979616336
Just ordered a pair of Loop Quiet Noise Reduction -27db. Have a few shows to go to over the next 2 months, I'll let you know! https://www.amazon.com/Loop-Quiet-Noise-Reduction-Earplugs/dp/B08MFDT65P/
Yeah I got drunk and tried to get in the band entrance around the corner after the show. They promptly led me outside. It was a good show though! I've got some videos on my Vimeo page. I have more but I got lazy with editing sound and adding titles and stuff. Needless to say, Chon, ATB and AAL killed it. I'm not into that dubstep stuff Navene plays.
Last I heard was Language, I ruthlessly panned it when it came out. Reading back on my review, in between calling them total shit I did also say that they could turn into something good, so might check out the new one. I've since 'retired' from blogging and paying any real attention to new releases because it became massively draining.
https://www.mediafire.com/?oe2f21cr19l3781
There are the GPros. The bass parts are still unwritten as well as a second guitar part. Both necessary, but if you can play what's written, that'd be good too.
https://www.mediafire.com/?xrb4cerb7dtbf9k
Here are the gPro files. Good luck, and get back to me! :)
Here's my facebook if you want to message me more, but I will check back here too: https://www.facebook.com/plaseebogazebo
I don't feel like listing everything here, because everything I listened to is already listed there. I also make small reviews for each of them.
A lot of gems to find out there, have fun guys!
Lot of stuff I need to look at, saved the post, thanks!
Here's my top albums of 2017 list : https://rateyourmusic.com/list/Tone_Zone/top-2017-albums-rated-and-reviewed/
And here's my top EP of 2017 one : https://rateyourmusic.com/list/Tone_Zone/top-2017-eps-rated-and-reviewed/
Lot of stuff you didn't cover here too!
This list should provide some great places to start. My favorites are Leaving Your Body Map (maudlin of the Well), Biomech (Devin Townsend/Ocean Machine), and Crimson (Edge of Sanity) but none of those are even in the top 5 records on that list.
If you pay attention to the secondary genres on releases, you'll get a better understanding of what makes each album unique. Crimson takes heavily from heavy metal, while Leaving Your Body Map is much more explorative in terms of instrumental choices and shifts in song composition.
I bought mine from Gearbest. The QR code is a little sticker on the headphones and they are legit. I've heard of people receiving fakes from this seller so ymmv.
There's also this which has an option to ship from a US warehouse which would probably cut down on how long it takes to deliver. I don't know anything about fakes in their warehouses though.
Also just noticed they have kickstarter up which has one of the new tracks on it!
I guess. Then again, I'd like to think I only give five stars to albums that truly deserve them, but it is true that comparing to others I tend to give them more easily. Looking at my RYM ratings, there's less than 5 percent of five star albums in regards to the total number of ratings, but I suppose most would argue to that it should be much lower. Do check them out if you're interested in a wider selection than that above. x)
(Regarding the ratings, I like to think of the five star scale as a concentrated 100 point scale. Each half star then equals 10 points and thus a five star album could be anything from 91 to 100 points.)
My top 5 isn't complete yet, but looks like this for now :
Thank You Scientist - Stranger Heads Prevail
StarSystems - StarSystems III
Sean Ashe - Flux
Vektor - Terminal Redux
Artifex Pereo - Passengers
You can look the rest of my top albums and EPs of 2016 here : https://rateyourmusic.com/list/Tone_Zone/top-2016-albums/
With more than 60 albums ranked and a lot more to come in the next weeks!
On the same note, there's Explorers Club - Raising the Mammoth who separated their album into 44 tracks : 1-13 is Passage to Paralysis (15:03) ; 14-19 is Broad Decay (11:43) ; 20-27 is Vertebrates (11:17) and 28-44 is Gigantipithicus (AKA Prog-O-Matic) (21:18).
Just noticed that on Wikipedia they consider the first three songs to be parts of an even longer song... I'll have to dig on some info about this one.
EDIT : Actually it seems like Gardner saw this as a single huge song (S) Quickly! To Audacity!
They where groundbreaking back when they released their demo in 2007. Personally I don't think their new stuff sounds anywhere near as good as they did on that demo, especially the vocals. I was really looking forward to the EP and the upcoming album but it seems they jumped on this djent train thing, or whatever it is.
I always thought Lord Only had a similar sound in production, at least. (Should note that the "Dante's Cafe" songs don't have any mixing or mastering on them, so they sound very rough. The other ones are professionally mastered).
Wherever I can typically. I like to look at reviews (if any), metallum when applicable, progarchive, bandcamp pages, but sometimes those have too many or not enough descriptors, and sometimes I just have to listen and define it myself.
Edit: one site that I haven't used for this purpose yet is everynoise.com, it's built by Spotify and has the most extensive genre mapping for artists in their database.
oddly enough, this doesn't work in the central US but a it does with a new york proxy. zenmate and hola unblocker are really nice for getting around regional blocks
Sure, http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=1266724
My main influences are Shining (NOR), Periphery, Meshuggah, John Petrucci, John Scofield, As I Lay Dying, Gojira and Carpenters.
Concerning my gear. Guitar: Ibanez RGA with EMG 57(bridge) & 89X (neck), Amp: TSEX50v2, LePou amps, TSE808X, Interface: Behringer UCG Usb link. Drums are recorded via a midi-usb link going from my MPS-300 drums into Superior Drummer 2 (then quantized... just a bit I swear). DAW: Cubase 5 (I don't have the money for an upgrade yet).
I want you to know that I'm making music that can be interesting, despite the fact that I lack experience in making it. I'm a self-taught musician/producer, so I need advices, but above else, criticism. I'd love to get some feedback on my work. I don't intend to go professional and I'll keep on playing the guitar as long as I can enjoy it as much as I do now. (=forever?)
Pretty much just one guy. Actually, I just got done listening to his whole collection (even his soundclick.com files which are free and PLENTIFUL) about 10 mins ago. Although the album you found is AMAZING, the one before it is absolutely phenomenal. It's got more of a 2001: A Space Odyssey theme. One of my all-time favorites - literally.
edit: got the link: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=77752 looks like the files aren't there anymore....unless I'm blind.
I got the album for free today at Microsoft Store. https://slickdeals.net/f/9512228-digital-mp3-albums-avenged-sevenfold-halsey-2-chainz-free-more https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/music/album/avenged-sevenfold/the-stage/8d6kgwx3phtj
I would highly recommend reading Jeff Wagner's book on progressive metal titled Mean Deviation. He does a good job exploring this topic has a very dynamic definition. I know in the social media age reading a that is well researched and edited is not as fun as asking Reddit, but I think you will find it worth it.
https://www.amazon.com/Mean-Deviation-Decades-Progressive-Heavy/dp/0979616336
https://www.amazon.com/Live-At-Rockefeller-Music-Hall/dp/B01M0MGTO4
i know this is an amazon link to the DVD, but you can find most of the songs on YouTube. probably one of the best live performances ever.
I've seen Squire Jazz basses recommended a lot for metal on a budget. They're apparently great for the klanky, jangly dirty bass tones.
Spotify isn't that high quality either. And screw all the people who don't use it! We should just post an Amazon link to the vinyl! Then everyone can listen to it when they buy it!
Yes, the mix gets a lot clearer after 0:40 or so. I listened to the whole song, and it's actually pretty cool, you've got a nice little riff going that's pretty catchy. Sorry about my first comment.
I'm using these headphones: https://www.amazon.com/beyerdynamic-Over-Ear-Studio-Headphones-construction/dp/B0011UB9CQ
They're kinda boomy and I got them recently, so I'm also probably still getting used to that. Even so, I tried my closed back Pioneer headphones and I still got a similar feeling.
What frequency is your HPF set to? Although really, what I hear more is a "lack of presence" (which, as I understand, can come from lack of high freqs), so that's why I thought you had a LPF below 12k or something like that.
> I tried using the soundcloud auto-masterimg tool for the first time
I would love to listen to the unmastered track if possible. I don't have any idea how those tools work, so I'm just curious.
Another thing to consider is that maybe the lead guitar is not loud enough in the beginning. I feel like it gets lost in the mix, but the other leads later in the song are much more present.
Sorry if I'm not explaining things very well, I'm obviously not a pro.
My respect to you for having an open mind and accepting criticism so well, we should all be a little more like that.
Rambly and funny video about it from one of my favourite people on the internet.
TL;DW: Alpine MusicSafe (pretty sure it's their amazon affiliated link) are quite good

I think this will be their third US tour, and will be my third time seeing them. The first time I saw them was magical. My favorite live band for sure.
Grab you a pair of these, find somewhere to stand and just enjoy.
Every so slowly trudging through Pride & Prejudice, you know, for the vocabulary.
On the horizon:
I'd recommend this book if you want a truly definitive answer on the subject but in short, yes they are. They strike you as "standard" because they helped set a lot of those standards.

With one of these and one of these usually!
Look Right Penny isn't together anymore, but I love the one album they did put out.
I also got way into Numbers this year.
