So, a little explanation.
A while back, a couple of friends of mine decided that what this world was lacking was a steampunk storytelling act. Ok, maybe those already exist. So what this world really lacked was them telling steampunk storytelling music. And what they were lacking was an audience. So, in a haze of cheap tobacco and cheaper whiskey they gathered the rest of the band and myself, and thusly The Mechanisms were born.
We've been around for a while now, but now that we're gearing up to taking our act to the Edinburgh festival, we decided a photoshoot was in order, and, well. I decided that you guys might like to ogle our be-punked forms. True or false?
Now, I'm going to have to go for the petty merchandising or the rest of the band will lynch me for preening on the internet without cause. While we do have a bunch of music online already (see above), but we currently have about a week left on our crowdfunding page to produce our first full act in pristine compact disc form - Once Upon a Time (in Space). Now, admittedly, we're currently well overfunded (yay!), but a little while back we decided to get everything done really professionally, rather than just through friends and favours, so we're trying to recoup that. Though, full disclosure, we'll probably be offering everything on there for pay what you like on our blog when we're done anyway. So do what you like :D .
Anyway, I should really get back to studying for finals.
Steampunk dreams!
Since you didn't qualify your statement with "new," I'm assuming you mean any, so: Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura is old, and of general Sierra-level bugginess [as well as Sierra-level prettiness], but an excellent & engaging RPG. Not sure how easy it would be to acquire/play, tho..
I know her, I know the guy who she's working for, and they're both far better qualified than you will ever be to say what is or is not "actual steampunk".
OK, brake disks and a pram wheel are not really steam punk to begin with, let alone on a fence. Victorian England is where steampunk takes it's aesthetic cues, because that was the period that steam was the driving force of industry (industrial revolution). If you want a steampunk fence it might look like this, or something similar. I don't want to get you down, but I also don't want you to end up as one of those so called punks that glue gears on nerf guns. If you really want to get a good idea of what steampunk actually is then read some novels.
Add a "Steam Engine Governor" to each radiator vent. They were invented to release steam on a train before the boiler would blow. Very important piece of hardware.
Added bonus "Balls to the wall" and "Balls Out" originated from this equipment. If you were running the steam engine 'Balls out' you were running the boiler very hot (therefore high pressure) and risking an explosion. Learned this at Charles River Museum of Industry and Innovation. Which is the host of Steampunk City!
--Edit-- Just realized that the governor I linked to is a replica and not a working one. Search for, or build, a working one.
Cool designs. Such a shame this was cancelled, I'd have played the shit out of it. I read Gotham by Gaslight and, whilst victorian-era-based, wasn't as steampunk as I'd have liked.
The gawker blogs had several stories on this suit.
http://gizmodo.com/5664701/steampunk-iron-man-costume-embroiled-in-scandal
tl;dr, it was originally the Tin Man suit for an independent film called Heartless.
The suit's creator entrusted it to his assistant who modified it without his knowledge. He found out about it after Steampunk Iron Man won best costume at New York Comic Con in 2010. Much angsting. The suit's original maker I believe is still pissed. The rest of the crew were ok with it.
Personally I like the Tin Man version better.
I believe the key is just placed there not glued on. Apparently you need to turn it in the hole to turn the controller on. http://www.gamefront.com/you-got-your-steampunk-in-my-xbox-controller-pics/
Steampunk Emporium for suspender-ready trouser action.
and to add your own buttons, might I suggest...Jean Buttons...no sewing, just a hammer needed.
If you do decide to play around with the free alternatives to Photoshop (Krita is another good one), you might want to look into an inexpensive graphics tablet. Even the cheap ones are better (especially for someone who already knows how to draw) than a mouse, which is like trying to draw fine details with a bar of soap.
If you want good background music/sounds for D&D, check out:
He/she has some steampunk related tracks and its atmospheric so it adds to the campaign and is not distracting like real music can be.
Those are awesome, but definitely out of my costuming price range right now. I bought these ones for $6 on Amazon and I'm working on modding them now.
And what is visible is literally the first item to pop up when you type in "Steampunk Corset" on Amazon.
Glad that you like it! The previous 4 worlds were published on Android under the names Steampunk Idle Spinner (has Workshop, Clockwork city and Floating islands worlds) and Engineer Millionaire, in which the Assembly line world is alpha tested.
Basically, they're what became modern blue jeans, but made not from denim but from lightweight canvas. Picked mine up at a western wear store in Tri-Cities, Washington before a con out there, and they're wonderful and perfectly period for my persona (Gasworks engineer). I've also worn them in work settings and nobody batted an eyelash.
Check out https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150925552670651&set=t.632587439&type=1. Everything you see there was either purchased at a western store (the shirt and pants), or made from found objects (the vest came from a thrift store, the leather bits came from an old book cover). The bowler is I think the only thing I bought at a "steampunk" thing, and I think it was from a booth at a more generic fantasy con (RADCON if my memory is engaged).
If your stuck for ideas you could browse the steampunk section of instructables

Some of it's good, some bad. You'll probable find something you like
Hey! Professional circus performer here. I would recommend you just go get some fabric in the color combination you like and then make a pair of pants, pajama pants are pretty easy (http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Sew-Your-Own-Pajama-Pants/) if you're not the most stitchery inclined. Or you might consider throwing a few dollars a friend's way...
In the end you're going to get something much more unique and fitting for your personal flair than if you buy something ready-made. I can't speak to any particular online couturier, but if you put a bit of research into the fabric you will also end up with something far more durable (and probably functional), than most costume pieces. Because honestly, most of us end up wearing this stuff in real life too, right?
"Dress for the job you wanna have." :)
This would be a perfect cosplay for a Lantern air-blessed character from Inverse World. Actually, burn the wings and it would be the perfect cosplay for my Lantern from Inverse World....
Hm. I have wings and a lighter....
For those interested, there's a comicbook about them looking for Amelia Earhart:
https://www.comixology.com/Herald-Lovecraft-Tesla-Vol-1-History-in-the-Making/digital-comic/188588
I've never read it, but it seems interesting.
The detailing is nice, but she may want to look into getting some Rub And Buff, and look at the techniques in this tutorial. R&B is relatively cheap, goes on thinner than acryllics, and the metallic look has a better "pop" than metallic acryllics will give you.
Captain Hammer (me) and Dr. Horrible (my friend) There's a reddit meetup that someone put together. Here Steam on!
Here is a GIF demonstrating it in motion! http://js-kit.com/blob/ulNZsRnPtf7bu0DBkzfH1r.gif
It was created by the same guy who originally made the design (Emmett of Thingiverse)
And the link to the first post!
Neat, hadn't heard of Ali Baba before. I see they've got a similar one with a minimum order of 1, for under $10 - and the face exposes some of the innards, to boot.
Rise of the Leviathan is a solid entry by a fellow up and coming author named Skyler Edwards. It is a lovecraftian steampunk setting with fantasy elements. https://www.amazon.com/Rise-Leviathan-Tales-Aether-Void/dp/B084DG81CJ
And my book is a few months away from print but is also steampunk with a fantasy twist. You are welcome to sign up to be notified. https://www.authocracy.com/ruin/
Sorry for the late reply, but here is a link to my first book on amazon UK https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07BRDFQ4V
and here it is for amazon US https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BRDFQ4V
I think this post is sufficiently dead enough to not count as self promotion.
It's only a short story, and there aren't many elements of steampunk as I described, but the seeds are there.
Thank you. I would love to see what you or anyone else come up with. By the way, the map wall is only $100 on Amazon and there are many different versions.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AW2ZXZW/ref=twister_B0751CVFNX?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I have one of these, and it feels even cooler than it looks. It's got a really nice heftiness to it that makes it feel like more than a toy. Some people on amazon complained that the USB stick didn't work, but they went out of stock for a good while before coming back. I'm not sure if they fixed it or I just wasn't unlucky, because it works fine on mine.
It's pricey, but if you have the extra cash to burn it's a really cool little gadget. We got it for a murder mystery/ghost story/escape the room style adventure weekend we're creating for our little cousins, and after that's done I'm going to toss all of the things I've written on it and leave it in my library as a curio.
They're available on Amazon for about $8. Look for "rope lighter" and they'll pop up.
Here - trench lighter
They are 20 bucks on amazon with 2 day delivery.
They are 20 bucks on amazon with 2 day delivery.
Thank you! You can get the current version for your mobile Android device. Steampunk Idle Spinner has 3 worlds: Workshop, Clockwork city and Floating islands, and the Assembly line world is alpha tested as a separate app: Engineer Millionaire
Boneshaker by Cherie Priest was my introduction to steampunk books. I have had good luck with Flame Tree publishing - Swords and Steam as a collection of short stories. As well as R.S. Belcher Six-Gun. Hope that they help.
Might also enjoy https://www.gutenberg.org/files/22766/22766-h/22766-h.htm
(Just trying to find a few online versions of books I have hardcopy, inherited from my grandfather who was into radio before WWI.)
My novel is a gaslamp fantasy (steampunk with magic). Magic has supplanted technology in a lot of ways and is treated as a science, and mages are more likely to make machines with magic than fling spells around. The airships are magical machines. Story follows a group of pirate hunters as they get drawn into conspiracies that threaten the empire.

Thanks for asking! :) It has recently been published in a charity romance anthology for Ukraine called Fierce Hearts. (My novella is on page 971.)

The Fierce Hearts anthology is only available for 6 months, and after that, my book will be published as a stand-alone novel.
It's pretty easy. The hardest part is finding the parts. Most of the pipe you can get at Home Depot. The main body I got on Amazon (security light ). The smaller bulb sockets I got through work but I'm sure you can find them online too.
you designed it?
edit: since OP won't reply to my question and has no qualms constantly spamming reddit (check their submission history) while lying that they are designing these pieces, I'll save everyone else the click: yes, OP's store sells nothing but cheap shit from alibaba. You can get this skeleton bracelet for $2-3 on alibabaexpress with free shipping or $3-9 on amazon. Or you can buy it from OP for $22 plus $6.95. Oh, and OP wants you to know:
>Note: please allow 2-4 weeks for delivery
which means it's being dropshipped directly from the factory in china so you'll be waiting a long time. You're better off buying it for less than $10 on amazon.
They even use the same stock pics as OP. $2.45 and free shipping with the same shipping/delivery time as OP: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Halloween-Props-Gift-Nightclub-Party-Punk-Finger-Bracelet-Gothic-Skull-Skeleton-Bone-Hand-Finger-Bracelet-Vintage/32709718262.html
Or amazon: $3.99 plus free shipping: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Halloween-Props-Gift-Nightclub-Party-Punk-Finger-Bracelet-Gothic-Skull-Skeleton-Bone-Hand-Finger-Bracelet-Vintage/32709718262.html
OP, I wouldn't have said anything if you didn't keep spamming reddit with this shit, AND on top of that, fucking lying about it? pretending you designed these? taking credit for other people's work? NOT COOL.
The photo is my favorite one she has made thus far. We go on trips to local places looking for interesting and strange things to use in the sculptures. We are the weird people you see putting dead skeletons from the beach or side of the road into bags in our car when we see them.
Her Etsy store is here if you want to check it out. https://www.etsy.com/shop/SiffGallery?ref=l2-shopheader-name
Having done both, they have advantages and disadvantages.
For Nerf, they look like real weapons, and can actually fire, which is fun. The main catch is that they can look very same-y- the number of Longshots that are out there is staggering
For custom, they can look really cool but can be hard to find all the pieces for. I suggest going over to instructables.com for ideas. I suggest starting with modding prop guns (cheap cap guns/water pistols) to get your eye in- but given what you've shown us up top, you're really good already!
Great stuff...awesome.
One thing, don't think this guy knows what a "league" is...20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was about the distance travelled, not the depth. That is about 2.4 times the circumference of the Earth...
Something remembered only photos romantic girls in corsets. For burning man is not like that?
Here are links to photos from both role-playing games of live action. May time find image. There are images of the "Russian Empire" in the world of steampunk.

Thanks for looking!!
Something along those lines with moving gears. I really wished this one Southern Enterprises Elko Gear Wall Art with Clock had moving gears. I thought I saw one a few years back and now I can't find it anywhere.
I reject anything supernatural and believe that humanity would be better off without superstition.
But these are friggin' awesome. I want to see all of them.
Edit: Here are a bunch more
Oh no! I made a big long post about this and it just posted the link. :/ I'm sorry folks. Let me recap here:
Alright, so at the start of this month my book, The Cypher, was released for the world to see and enjoy. But because of many things (pandemic, turmoil, general sense of chaos and unrest) I wanted to find a way to make it so the story could be accessible, engaging and interesting!
So over the past few months I did readings, hired some local actors to read through the chapters, and turned the entire book into an audio book / podcast that's releasing new chapters every Tuesday and Thursday.
It's been a fun adventure and a lot of work, but I just wanted to share this here in case anyone wanted to have a big steampunk/ fantasy adventure. The Podcast which is available on most streaming platforms (Apple, Spotify, Stitcher, etc.) is completely free to listen to - and is available straight from the source here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1354183
It is an LGBT novel with heavy themes of acceptance, protection, family and contains scenes of self harm and persecution, so keep that in mind if those aren't thing you're into.
The Songstress Murders by J.B. Garner may fit what you're looking for! There's a lot more going on than just the steampunk stuff, but it's a good read and I'd highly recommend it!
this place has leather leftovers for adding leather padding to props (inlaid grips, leather clad urchin beaters, etc.,)
Actually, I imagine they have a shitload of stuff ready for (copper electrodes) or one coat of paint away from a steampunk accessory.
Steampunk only means Steam powered advanced machines
The Victorian aesthetic is just a common trope but not a requirement
There is a book called the Starving Vulture. It's set in a steampunk 1500s but Rome is still one of the world powers

Thanks! I found it on Amazon, from the company Eco Wood Art. They call it a planetarium.
My thoughts on it are very mixed. On one hand, once it is sorted out, it's amazing. On the other, getting there is a bit of a challenge. Glue and a proper lubricant are definitely needed. My review there explains a bit more.
Im reading one called Rise of the Leviathan by Skyler Edwards. Enjoying it so far. It's a good mix of steampunk, magic, and post apocalyptic. https://www.amazon.com/Rise-Leviathan-Tales-Aether-Void/dp/B084DG81CJ
I'd recommend my own book as well but it's still on the way to print after finishing the kickstarter. You are welcome to keep an eye on it though over at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/authocracystudios/ruin-volume-one
Me at an author event for my book Champagne Charlie and the Amazing Gladys. It had been cold for a couple of weeks, then suddenly very hot when I had to wear full Steampunk regalia under spotlights, so the hat fell by the wayside, and I ended up looking more river-boat gambler than Steampunk. But I think it looks good, overall.
Bless you for asking.
It's Out of the London Mist by Lyssa Medana
And I had far too much fun writing it.
To be honest, I'm scoping a lot of the recommendations out as I sort of accidentally wrote a steampunk novel first and worked out steampunk after. I'm getting really into the whole thing now, though. I love that there's a feeling of style and a flourish.
Might I suggest my novel The Nightshade Cabal? It's a paranormal steampunk mystery set in 1880s Halifax, Nova Scotia, inhabited by duelling spellcasters, reanimated corpses, rogue automatons, high-speed steamcarriage chases, clunky steampunk cyborgs, secret societies, bad breakfasts, and other complications. Interested parties can read the first two chapters free HERE at my publisher's website. Steam on!
If you can find or stream a Canadian show called 'The Murdoch Mysteries' it's pretty much steampunk-lite. A Toronto detective at the turn of the century uses the latest science and his own inventions to solve crimes (mostly murder). The new Season 14 just started this week, so it's current/recent but there's also a LOT of episodes to catch up on!
As for books, might I suggest my novel The Nightshade Cabal? It's not a series yet, though I am writing a sequel right now. Steam on!
Here's the Amazon listing. It's pretty cheap! You can find more by searching steampunk pockets watches on there
If you're open to short story collections, I recommend Steampunk! An Anthology of Fantastically Rich and Strange Stories. The best anthology I've read yet (out of about a dozen or more).
edit I noticed that similar products come up at the bottom that have 10 RPM and lower gearboxes that are all ready to wire up!
Whoa! There are actually 3 trades out! They're also available on Amazon.
If you have a Kindle account, you can get this one pretty easily:
Pilot goggles sounds about right. I dont know if those aviator glasses lenses would be big enough either. If you are a fan of DIY, you could get a pair of these: https://glofx.com/product/glofx-diffraction-ski-goggles/. I am sure the film is big enough or you could cut it down to size. Maybe even still use the frame and paint it or sew to a leather aviator style face guard. Just an idea..
or go completely the other direction and get these LOL https://www.amazon.com/GloFX-Steampunk-Dieselpunk-Kaleidoscope-Goggles/dp/B014HY5Z40/&field-keywords=kaleidoscope%20goggles%20&field-brandtextbin=glofx found em on amazon and at least they dont have the full can look? kinda gothic though
I know you asked for non-cartoons, but I've got to mention Moonpowder. A cute book with great illustrations that I find very inspiring. For real world ideas, 1000 Steampunk Creations has crafts done by many different artists, with the artists credited on each picture. If she falls in love with anything there, you can look up the individual artist online for even more examples of their work, and possibly even a how to!
The diagrams alone were enough to make me wince! I recently ordered Crucial Interventions: An Illustrated Treatise on the Principles & Practice of Nineteenth-Century Surgery and am very much looking forward to reading all about how horrific medical procedures were through the 1800s.
Thanks for sharing another great article.
Really very good, though we all bounced off the next generation one. Airbourne is also good, though much more lyrical YA. Scott Westerfield has a nice WWI steampunk series.
There's also... http://www.amazon.com/Armoured-heroes-across-centuries-Swords-ebook/dp/B015WKCVGS
Boneshaker and the rest of the Clockwork Century series. As someone who is also into cyberpunk, I feel this series really made a lot of bridges between the two genres.
Corsets and Clockwork is a pretty good title. Its on amazon for 9 dollars. http://www.amazon.com/Corsets-Clockwork-13-Steampunk-Romances/dp/0762440929 Its a compilation of 13 short stories, most of which are phenomenal.
Writing stories is a bit like a steam locomotive: it works best when the boiler is riveted shut.
In other words, be careful how much you talk about a story before you actually write it, or you may lose momentum.
That said, sounds like you have an interesting premise. Good luck, and remember: bird by bird! (If that makes no sense, you need to read this book.)
I'm not sure if it's quite what you are looking for, but I really enjoyed Cherie Priest's Boneshaker. It's a steampunk book about zombies
