I've been growing succulents/cacti for years, but never had anything more than the light from my windows to help them grow. I did a ton of research on what I needed for a decent indoor setup and finally settled on these lights and this shelf. I have my lights connected to an auto timer set for ~12 hours of light each day. I couldn't be happier with my first setup and it only cost around $120 total!
This is awesome. Can I suggest using rice lightsinstead of traditional Christmas fairy lights as they are much lighter? Rice lights or micro fairy lights are teeny tiny little lights on a copper wire, very easy to mold into shapes to get into the little nooks and crannys in the succulents. On Amazon.
Individual vs Corporation, also look at Lowes track record in how it treats customers and employees over Home Depot. That donation is a one time payment in the form of advertising which is working perfectly and they get a huge tax write off for it. The Home Depot operates the Homer fund and does either direct grants (typically for individuals) or matched $ 2:1 grants for community projects every year. The amount every year differs slightly but it's easily 10-20 mil per geographic region they operate in (example, United States + Canada would equal 20-40 million).
Like or dislike trump, if your using support for visible minorities as a reason to do business the Home Depot utterly annihilates Lowes on charitable giving and a lot of it is directed by the stores themselves separate from the politics of a single co-owner.
Amazon! This was my first time ordering any plant online and was super paranoid about purchasing from a third party Amazon seller but everything about it went fantastically. Nicely packaged, good variety (as you can see), and it came with some little decorative ladybugs and a few extra seedlings, a handwritten note, and some care instructions.
Amazon! Link for your convenience!
Forewarning, it is $70 but it’s honestly very well made and the wheels can be left off too! Totally not required, but they felt really nice and stable to me. there is also 0 effort to this. You screw in the wheels. That’s it. Lol it comes already ready to go! And you can fold it back up at any time! #notsponsored am I doing this right? Hahaha!
I'm using this light: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QY16YRD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s01?ie=UTF8&th=1
It has a fan on it which helps to circulate air for now but I intend to install a separate fan whenever I can get around to it

They seem to work great. I even did a couple big 10 inch pots around my deck rail with them. A little worried the pot on those might break as they're pretty heavy, but that's not the clips fault. They're Rock solid.
I use these lights! I recently changed them from some red + blue lights cause I got tired of the pink color, and I couldn't be happier with them! I have four of them screwed under each shelf!
Yep! It’s this one. I really like it because it’s got a built in timer function so it switches on at 8AM and off at 8PM every day.
Second that
Edit: found it, but it's unavailable on Amazon and can't find it anywhere else :(
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XHFS5TC/ref=cm_sw_r_pi_dp_x_frImzbP2BTQ5V
Edit2: found it on eBay for 40 bucks.
So cool! I have been looking for some pretty trellis ideas for my indoor plants. I'm not a huge fan of the look of moss poles or traditional trellises. This one on Amazon has seriously caught my eye.
Got the Butterfly Habitat from Amazon. My husband is happy for the containment since we only have a balcony and live in a downtown area.

Ladybugs came from Armstrong nursery/ garden center. There are 1500 in a container and I didn't put all of them in the cage. I also gave some ladybugs to friends and neighbors.
It's only been 24 hrs but i do see a difference on my mint plant.
Sorry for the late response, just got back from the birthday party, also got it from Amazon https://smile.amazon.com/DOYOLLA-Bulbasaur-Succulent-Planter-Aminal/dp/B07DMDPDZR/ref=mp_s_a_1_8?crid=1XN2YMOUZIKW0&keywords=bulbasaur+planter&qid=1557038157&s=gateway&sprefix=bulbasau&sr=8-8

Thanks for sharing! Beautiful collection!

Even the stronger version is only ~500 lumen.
For about $10 you can get cree led bulbs that put out ~1600-1750 lumen (currently using one in a drafting lamp)
My lights are probably over kill.
I have two sets of these.
Not OP, but I always spam the following link when I see this question pop up on this sub:
I swear by em. I'm curious to see if OP is using something similar.
The top two I got at a tjmaxx in the US, and she got the owl ones from amazon. Here’s a link for the owl ones!
Oh wow! I didn’t expect this response— here is the light
By far best I own— I have it set up on my greenhouse window and every succulent under it is delighted. I’d say they’re all like 4 inches under it— will try to put up a pic soon.
Edit to clarify: green house window meaning one of those windows that sticks out— I do not own a greenhouse haha.
This is the light I’m using

This is the exact one I bought off of Amazon - 4 foot, 2 bulb:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01E9IO770/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_WkPGnlD9hLcJ5
This is what the light looks like in action:
I’ve been using this one. I use it in my bedroom so the main selling point for me was that it was a nice white light instead of those purples and pinks.
Realistically, any light will work as a grow light as long as it's bright enough. But blue light is considered best for vegetative growth, so you do want a "daylight white" bulb for succulents. If they have the spectrum listed, you want something that's 4k or higher (the higher the number, the bluer the light). 5k is about ideal.
Personally I'd recommend something more like a spotlight that'll direct the light downward towards the plants.
I got these recently and I’m pretty happy with them! I have 3 on my shelf with my more light hungry succs. 2 on one shelf with my less light hungry, and 1 on my prop shelf. I got them because in my sunniest spot they were still etiolating. New growth is all compact now, and even a little sunstress and some blooms! The lights are about 6-10in above my plants..
These are probably too long for that shelf tho. I know Barrina has 2ft lights like this that are actually made for plants but I’m not sure if the specs are right for succs. My lights stick out past my shelf so it’s not the prettiest but it’s functional. From my understanding the cheap clip plant lights from amazon don’t really do much of anything.
(Pack of 6) Barrina LED T5 Integrated Single Fixture, 4FT, 2200lm, 6500K (Super Bright White), 20W, Utility Shop Light, Ceiling and Under Cabinet Light, Corded electric with built-in ON/OFF switch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ghNFDbAW91XJR

Believe it or not, they're actually from Amazon! I was really impressed that something that looks so artsy/custom came from Amazon. Here they are!
Absolutely! Check out r/SavageGarden, as well as The Savage Garden by Peter D’Amato of California Carnivores (which is also an excellent resource for purchasing carnivorous plants).
If you’re looking for outdoor carnivores, Venus flytraps are excellent beginner plants! As are many Sarracenia (the North American pitcher plants), particularly Sarracenia purpurea. They all need dormancy, and you can keep them outdoors year round in most of the U.S.
As for windowsill plants, some of the Mexican Pinguicula or the tropical sundews (Drosera)—particularly Drosera capensis—are very easy keepers! The Pinguicula are very cool because they’re succulents during their winter dormancy, which is triggered by drier substrate, and sundews don’t require any dormancy at all.
I drill holes in ceramic and glazed pots all the time. You just need a diamond drill bit. I got this set of 5 from Amazon really cheap and they work great: FireKingdom 5pcs 12mm 1/2" Inch Diamond Drill Bit Hole Saw for Tile Glass Marble Granite Fiberglass Ceramic Tool https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00O1SAY58 Just search on YouTube for instructions. You just spray the surface with water then start drilling at an angle, then when it starts to wear a groove in the surface, you can move the drill to drill straight downward. It is a little tricky to get it started till you get the groove going (the drill wants to slide around).
Grow lights are expensive and intimidating and can be uglayyy!! I didn’t want all my plants shoved in a corner under some shop lights so I got this Sansi bulb and put it in a cute lamp and foliage plants have been thriving
For my succulents I use philips 100W CFL bulbs, make sure they are 1600 lumens and 6500K!
I use these lights - I have four of them screwed under each shelf! And the shelves are from Target! I modified them slightly by applying marble contact paper on the vertical panels. I bought all the pots on the top two shelves and the smaller terra cotta ones from Amazon. The bigger terra cotta pots were $0.97 each at HD. And the grey and gold terra cotta pots were $1 from Target!
Hahaha, sorry. Guess I'm not running on all cylinders today! I got them here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0149STQDK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It is this Kingbo one. I have a lot of pots under it, approximately two to four inches above the plants, on for approximately 17 hrs a day.
I'm not the person you asked, but I've been using these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IVQ96KY/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
So far EVERYTHING I put under them does fantastic. I have apple seeds that sprouted really fast, I have succulents, I have a few flowers and things that don't like too much cold. Everything is doing super well.
Just some cheap lights from amazon.
https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07RVG1HCW?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Then I have another full spectrum one with 3 bulbs. However the timer in that one seems to be fast. So I have to reset it every few days. Might be best to avoid this one.
I just went to a local nursery today and picked up everything in the photo including the top dressing. They’re actually little glass shards. They’re by a brand called Exotic Glass.
Found a link on amazon to some blue ones but I think they have lots of colors: https://www.amazon.com/Exotic-Pebbles-Landscaping-Glass-Small/dp/B00J31ZHY6
You can get seeds or plants online, I got some from Amazon and they arrived in solid shape.
I haven't figured out if I actually need to give them non-tap water yet, so I got two and am experimenting if I can just flush them to remove solids.
They make small rotating displays that are pretty cheap. Even found this one on Amazon that's solar powered.
I ordered a cold frame miniature greenhouse on amazon and then picked up some fluorescent lights at my local aquaponics shop and installed them myself!
MCombo Wooden Garden Cold Frame... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0856264YX?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Amazon It's really quite small so eventually they'll need to be moved (if I don't kill them before that, lol), but it works perfectly for now.
We got these LED lights on Amazon
Anything labeled ‘grow light’ are usually the red/blue lights (which aren’t fun on the eyes when you’re working next to them) or are a lot more expensive. We had some professional fluorescents before but needed a lot more of them with these shelves.
Since plants generally need that daylight color temperature we’re hoping these are good. The main thing we’ll find out is if they’re putting off enough light but we have 3-4 per shelf so we‘ll see! Reviews of those lights have people saying they use them as grow lights and they work great.
Edit: mounted with zip ties. Super quick and easy. Just need to zip tie and clean up the wiring on the sides.
Judging by the size of the wings, and the time of year, i’d say you have an adult female Stagmomantis. She’s done growing, and is currently defending an excellent spot to lay her ootheca ,an egg case that looks like this. She will sadly pass soon, but come spring her army of tiny nymphs (baby mantids) will take up her watch.
I have the same ones. My plants love them.
u/LilNightingale I also bought this light/wetness meter to make sure my lights were powerful and close enough.
I’m not the OP, but I have this shelf too. Got it from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/COSTWAY-Utility-Bathroom-Display-Organizer/dp/B07BP1B61Y/ref=mp_s_a_1_17?ie=UTF8&qid=1538927877&sr=8-17&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=bamboo+plant+stand
I wish I had the tools to make the pot myself, but I did buy it off amazon. Slightly pricy but I think it was worth it 😅And the quality is very good in my opinion, perfect for my little butts! :)
I found that my echeverias do best outside in full-sun. When they were inside, even though they were in a large south-facing window they still weren't reaching their full potential without a grow light.
I used these bulbs at the end of winter and in early spring last year and got really good results. I also used it throughout the spring and summer to acclimate newly shipped plants before putting them outside. This is what one of my other echeverias looked like after 3 weeks under this light in conjunction with a large south-facing window. I had them positioned 2-3'' above my plants and ran them 12 hours a day.
It was a cling film I bought off of Amazon. This is the one I bought, but there are all sorts of patterns.
Thanks! I just got them and they’re an excellent size - 3in square. My only complaint is that they’re not as smooth as round terra cotta pots. But the size and function is fantastic.
Anyway, to your question: Amazon —
Let's take a look at my amazon purchases here....ah yes, these are the drill bits I used.
As I was drilling, I was spraying with water too - it was recommended on the packaging, and I just assumed that was what I should do since I did a rock shop in science class when I was a kid :D
I've killed a couple rounds myself... Biggest thing is to just about never water them, literally like 3-4 times a year, and give them as much sun as possible. I've been pleasantly surprised that they aren't that hard to grow from seed. Bought an awesome kit from Amazon if anyone else is interested. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076PVCG7M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_957xFbR9765FM They're teeny! But alive so far.
It is the Rapitest Mini Moisture reader. It is just a moisture reader but I have had it for years. It has always been my favorite. It is super simple and very easy to read. I water my plants when it gets to around a 1 or sometimes a 2 depending on the plant.
I got mine on Amazon! So well packaged that not a SINGLE leaf fell off during shipping. Awesome company. Would buy 100% buy again.
I just got some random shelves for mine - these.
Things like “plant shelf” and “plant stand” (depending on the size you want) will get loads of possibly suitable results on Amazon.
They aren’t red/blue, so full spectrum, I guess? I got them on Amazon. Nothing fancy, but they seem to do the job!

I know you can find these on Amazon! 😊 I remember seeing one of these in Jenna marbles plant tour video and I just had to have it. There's a link to one of them

Yup! Like these ones. I have a similar set. I've only used them on glass (made some spiffy Jack Daniel's and Jim Beam bottle lamps for gifts once) but the box says they work on glass, ceramic, porcelain & tile. I have a few old mugs that i don't want to get rid of that i've been considering this for.
I have been dabbling with [email protected] recently - works well for IDs generally, not necessarily succulents but great with general flowers etc. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.plantnet&hl=en_GB
Yes they do!
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CKWZCPR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_yCjyBb906B494
I’ve ordered from this seller twice and have had great variety and perfect little lithops each time. I recommend them to everybody!
Lmao Plant Karen’s that’s great!! I’m so new to this so any info you can impart is greatly appreciated! I started bottom watering in an attempt to correct what I believe is hydrophobic soil and it did help as far as giving more water to my succs bc top watering was merely going straight to the drainage holes and not into the soil. Now that I’m using bonsai jack, hydrophobic soil will not be a problem. I purchased a little potting kit with the little tools ideal for smaller pots and it came with a water bottle like this . I’ll use this. Your explanation makes perfect and total sense! Thank you! I was just worried bc I know that you should Water until the water comes thru the drainage holes but being that bonsai jack is fast drainage I was afraid it wouldn’t be an accurate way to determine when to stop watering.
This is the exact one I got: Mini Small Greenhouse for Plant Outdoors Indoor, Pop Up Portable Grow Greenhouse Tent Flower House Gardening Backyard (28"x28"x32") https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08MQ9QZZ4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_NJZS0MRE3N4XFMTHRV4E?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
After trying tons of smaller grow lights without success (pun intended), I got this 1000W grow light and it works like a charm. I have it plugged into a power strip with a timer and have it on for 12 hours a day. I finally have beautiful, colorful, healthy succulents inside, and they stopped stretching.
Oh. I spent a LONG time researching lights. I have a few that I use, but that one is under some cabinets. I found this great very small format ho fluorescent bulb. You can see it here on amazon: SunBlaster NanoTech T5 HO Fixture 4 ft w/ NanoTech Reflector Combo https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K5W5U9O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_mTkQyb24E435J
Unfortunate it's not readily available.
It's nice because it's so thin and if you want lights in the main part of the house, rather than a special greenhouse, you can make it fit.
I also found a cool led spot that I use. https://www.1000bulbs.com/product/172658/GREENCREATIVE-97778.html
It's good for taller plants.
More pictures to come.
Not OP but I bought the same one OP has half a year ago and it’s awesome. Its a 4ft long grow light with two long lights inside, here's a link to them, I got them on Amazon on sale($63) :D
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01E9IO770/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Oooh, I'll be interested to see how well it works.
I looked at something very similar on Amazon, but reviews were too mixed, it wasn't designed for succs, and for the same price, I could pick up a couple of bulbs that covered a LOT more plants. The wood look on this one is gorgeous, though. Where did you find it?
I'm glad to see companies starting to come out with better looking light setups, though. Many of us want to display our babies, not just grow them under banks of fluorescent tubes or the purple glow of cheap LEDs.
Those pots can also be found on amazon btw. I only know cuz I've had it saved in my cart for forever.
Amazon! Come in six colors, super cute. And with drainage holes!

Nothing special, just one of these from Amazon:
https://smile.amazon.com/Upgraded-Dimmable-Spectrum-Adjustable-Gooseneck/dp/B07H57K565
This has been 3+ months of 24/7 light. I'm not sure if that's advisable but I've had fun experimenting.
i got it off amazon!
theres lots, and they have drainage holes!
I bought these off Amazon last fall and they're growing well, they look really similar to OP's but they're a bit further along.
The lights are simply under cabinet LED lights but they work great! Here's the link. If you're American then I suggest looking for the barrina brand lights. They're practically identical
https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07FF7C7KF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_4j2EFbD8MY841
a sunblaster t5 fluorescent, I got it off amazon! its on 16hrs a day and about 6 in from the plants. They're in a north facing window that barely gets any light so the grow light is the main source. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AKKUBDQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_.fHFCbTZ1F5GW
I don’t have the exact link to where I bought it but this is the greenhouse https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MSXC2HS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_XHSQSTCFPB7K9EEY8YZC?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 I got it for 300$ so if you do some searching I’m sure you can get it for cheaper
I attach 40 inch 6500k LEDs to the bottom of the metal shelves with zip ties daisy chained together. I got a pack of 6 lights for $45 off amazon. I use 2 per shelf, at different heights each shelf
Sempervivums can withstand temperatures down to -30°F. They do not do well indoors even with grow lights.
As for cleaning, I wonder about using a little air blower to blow off dirt. Example air blower tool. I use this to blow water droplets off my succulents.
I found them on amazon, it’s a set of 4 (these 2 are just my favorite)

It’s this one from Amazon. I don’t know a lot about plants and I didn’t know what to get, so I just got this one because it was the amazon best seller and it was cheap
I have a bunch of plants so I have a small shelf unit in my room now with four panels hanging above all the plants. I use a 45W blue and red LED panel. I got them off of amazon! https://www.amazon.com/Roleadro-Panel-Spectrum-Growing-Flowering/dp/B01IVQ96KY
We use this one from Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Agrobrite-Designer-FLP24-4-Tube-Fixture/dp/B0049XGYWM/ref=redir_mobile_desktop?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&ref_=ya_aw_oh_bia_dp). On the first shelf (~4in away from lights) are the Echeveria and other plants that I like to color stress. The second shelf below gets some light through the clear shelf lining & houses our lower light plants like Haworthia.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CKWZCPR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_yCjyBb906B494
I recently bought seedlings from this seller on amazon, and would absolutely recommend as well! :) came earlier then expected.. I also received 11 beautiful & healthy babies even though the order only said 8.
it doesn't have to be pricey! I got this set on amazon recently and it has worked wonderfully for me. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ODSS5NO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I got him from Amazon a long time ago. But they don't seem to carry them anymore.
If I were to modify this design, I would suggest adding a hole in the bottom with a rubber plug, kind of like this. That way the soil won’t fall out the bottom when it hangs, but you can still let the water drain out before putting it back.
This is the light I’ve had the best luck with....and it might fit the dimensions you need
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079GK3PL1/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_sX8sFb4VPNN4X
Those are the T5 I have recently switched to. I have noticed many of my succulents start showing color after two weeks or so. I bought them cheaper since they were on sale. I would have purchased regardless since it’s recommended in this community.
it’s a pretty standard leg grow light i got on amazon. i’ve attached the exact one below.
LED Grow Light for Indoor Plants, Relassy 15000Lux Sunlike Full Spectrum Grow Lamp, Dual Head Gooseneck Plant Light with Replaceable Bulbs, Professional for Seedling Growing Blooming Fruiting https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C68N7PC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_nnpjFbB1F4T7T
Thank you!! I use the VIPARSPECTRA 300W VIPARSPECTRA grow light from Amazon. This thing is extremely bright but since I don’t really have any outdoor space and my succulents seem to be very much enjoying it, I can’t really complain haha
You’ll need to look for lights with a kelvin around 6500K, and you’ll need 2000 lumens per each square foot you need to light. These Kihungs are popular around here. Also search for ‘Barrina t5’ on Amazon, and you’ll find nearly identical lights, just a different brand and quantity.
My two cents: I use this technique with drill bits like these.
Basically what u/ravekitt was saying. :)
