Got a dozen domains at Gandi. They're inexpensive, they respond to support requests very quickly, and in ten years they've never fucked me over. I'm a fan.
(Plus, they support DNSSEC and if you're using Cloudflare for authoritative DNS, turning DNSSEC on takes all of five seconds.)
gandi.net is a good registrar and host if you are looking for a registrar that takes privacy seriously. https://www.gandi.net/static/pdf/en/Privacy_Policy_US_V1.0.pdf
Zoho is a mail host that also prides themselves for their privacy policy. https://www.zoho.com/privacy.html
They are no lavabit but for 'for profit companies' their privacy policy is pretty good.
I ran into a similar issue recently.
The Solution:
Gandi.net will register this for you. They have a corporate services package which provides local contacts for domain registration: http://www.gandi.net/corporate/services/domain http://www.gandi.net/domain/mc/info
You will need to subscribe to their 'corporate services' which is $65 for 1 month + the cost of the domain. https://www.gandi.net/corporate/buy
Hope that helps!
Take your business to these guys:
It says "no bullshit" on their front page and they are right. I've used them for at least 5 years now, they're great. This might be helpful too:
More reasons to use Gandi: they donate bandwidth for one of Nos Oignos' tor relays and are a major supporter of Debian.
That almost means nothing.
I’m in the UK and can register a .com, .ru, .in etc domain if I wanted. For example https://www.gandi.net/en/about-us let your register .com domains through a company based in France.
A US company, Verisign, who works closely with the government do to a certain extent control the .com domain but very few websites are pulled under their authority. This would probably explain why some piracy websites do have backup/mirror domains that don’t end in .com.
Gandi also supports a bunch of Free/Open Source Software projects, including Debian, the EFF, the Software Freedom Conservancy, and Creative Commons. Highly recommended.
Gandi's slogan is "no bullshit", and they stick to it. I don't get spammed by them, I've never heard of someone having an issue with them.
They're also major supporters of open source software, which is a plus.
I know it's kinda cool to install an OS over the network, but...
I'd suggest just asking your provider if they could give you a Debian template. Failing that, you could always switch providers - VPSes are a dime a dozen, and my favorite has a few different Debian templates from which you can choose.
If you decide to go through with the installation, keep in mind that many VPS providers install their own software on their images (or, they might have proprietary Xen client packages or kernel modules or something). You should take a look around (both at the filesystem and at the installed package list) one of their Ubuntu Server images and see if anything looks like it didn't come from an Ubuntu repository - you'll probably want to make sure that ends up on your Debian installation, too.
One last piece of despair... if you ever break your package list or want to do a fresh upgrade to the next stable version of Debian or something like that, you're going to have to go through all of this again if you keep the same provider.
All that said, guzo is right: debootstrap is the way to go if you really want to try this out.
Hello! Gandi US support manager here. I stumbled across this post and felt compelled to piggy-back on this.
/u/burninfate , this is all correct, and it's as easy as flowing these steps:

You might find it easier to change the edit mode to "expert" so you can easily make the changes. If you need help with the syntax you can refer to this:

Cert was reissued this year, a quick check says if your time is before 1/21/2015, then you'll get an error (since that cert isn't valid then).
And checking the cert, I see they use Gandi for the CA, is that a trusted CA on your system?
Check the certificate details and find out what the issue is, click the encryption icon, and view the certificate and check out the details and errors. Your browser should tell you why it's failing validation.
I recommend https://www.gandi.net/ as registrar. I’ve been using them for many years and am very satisfied with them.
For hosting the site GitHub Pages like someone said is a good and easy way to get started, so stick with that and point the domain to it.
See https://docs.github.com/en/pages/configuring-a-custom-domain-for-your-github-pages-site for instructions on how to point a domain to a GitHub Pages site.
Like /u/captain_obvious_here , I was going to say gandi.net . With 200+ should get the C tier rates, that's 12.5 per domain for .com . Privacy included IIRC. I don't think they qualify as cheapest but seem to be reliable.
Yeah, it was a shock to me too. Private registration is free, for example, on https://www.gandi.net/ - they may be more expensive than GoDaddy for the domains themselves but you don't have to buy all the extras.
You want to buy a domain name, which you do through a domain name registrar (I am a fan of https://www.gandi.net/). The #1 important thing here is that the domain is owned by you so that you aren't locked in to any hosting service.
Once you have a domain you get to specify, for that domain, whose servers host the actual content. And that service has to be configurable to know "when your domain is asked for, show your content", as opposed to using only their domain. WordPress.com is an example of a service that can work either way.
There are roughly three tiers of hosting service:
I buy my domains from gandi.net because they're not American. They also sell TLS certificates, free for the first year and 13€ / year after that. Reddit.com is registered there, and they used to have their TLS certificate from there too - dunno why not anymore.
No. namecheap is probably going to get more support because it is cheaper. Namecheap is around 11 for a .com and gandi is ~16.
I've used godaddy,1&1,netfirms and gandi. From a technical point of view I had no problems with godaddy, got tired of constant upselling. 1&1 is just bad. Their interface is limited. The billing is weird (payments taking weeks to clear, lack of effective communication), netfirms was acceptable but once they charged for privacy I moved all but one domain off and if I renew it, it'll be on gandi.
I trust them more than the other providers. Why? I don't know, they have a no BS policy and seem to not put profits first. I'm pretty sure they have lived up to their policy so far. Can read it here : https://www.gandi.net/no-bullshit
Neat. My mum uses Freeparking, she seems to like it. I mentioned that .nz was becoming available, and she nabbed lastname.nz before I could. I'm only a little bit bitter.
Otherwise, I use Gandi. Big range of TLD's, and it seems to be fairly popular.
For what it's worth, OVH has been pretty vocal against the "Projet de loi renseignement" (= French Patriot Act) and has signed the joint statement against the mass surveillance of the internet . On this list, Gandi also provides VPS and has always been attached to these liberties...
The minimum prices are set by the companies managing each TLD. Depending on the TLD, you can get a domain from Gandi for as low as $15 a year with email hosting and a very basic webpage.
You can get a domain for cheaper from other registrars but you need to pay attention to what exactly is offered.
hover.com is my go to. Great prices, excellent service, no bullshit, good people.
Gandi.net is my secondary, especially useful if you're looking for a more "obscure" or "eccentric" TLD like .technology and are frequently updating them. They're tagline is literally "no bullshit" and they live up to it so far as I can tell. Good guys, good prices.
The main thing to avoid is giant companies like godaddy and also avoid buying from web hosts. (Prices should be around $10-15 for .com/.net/.org)
People often recommend:
For a UK based registrar I use Domainmonster for about 60 domains and I've had top notch service from them. They seem to have a lot of happy customers. A friend uses Gandi and speaks highly of them as well.
But, if you're in the US and use your registrars DNS servers, you'd probably want to stick with an American based one, as I can ping ping ns1.domainmonster.com in 12ms and ns1.godaddy.com takes 144ms from here in London.
Just to be clear, you want an email service with a nice webmail UI? Email providers otherwise don't provide the UI, that is what your email client does.
How many users are we talking about here? Is if fairly common for domain registers to provide email for the domain you host for them for free. For example these guys do that:
https://www.tophebergeur.com/hebergement/hebergeur+prestashop/
https://www.gandi.net/en/simple-hosting will give you a server where you can install wordpress easily.
Lots of storage, easily scalable for later on, no engagement.

It might not be the cheapest, but Gandi is a good choice as far as good provider goes.
There's a 10 days trial as well, so if you want to check if this fits your needs, go for it!
I'm currently using Google Domains but Namecheap and Ghandi are both good options.
Note: Avoid 1and1 and GoDaddy at all costs.

It may not be the cheapest (domains cost a few dollars more), but their no bullshit promise is worth every penny.
There is a .vote TLD which might be suitable for individual campaigns but the cost of registration is quite high. I would say .org would generally be the most appropriate and cost effective.
There is a ".gop" managed by "Republican State Leadership Committe" and a ".democrat" managed by "Rightside Group". If the LP wanted to request its own TLD I believe they would have to go through ICANN, I am not sure how to initiate a request.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Internet_top-level_domains
.LU domains are 26,33€ at Gandi : https://www.gandi.net/domaine/prix/detail/lu/
I have a few domains there - not the cheapest but probably the most reliable one : https://www.gandi.net/no-bullshit?lang=en
It depends on how many concurrent players you expect to host and how large is the load on the server. Assuming a small enough number of players, you can host different game servers on the same machine. You just make them listen on different ports. If I were you, I wouldn't worry about having a distributed server cluster until I am actually sure that I need it, because things can get complicated really fast when you add load balancers and dynamic server instancing.
As far as providers go, I've always used Gandi and I'm pretty satisfied with them. They offer the possibility of automatically scaling your server virtual hardware on the fly based on resource consumption.
If you seriously consider gandi.net as a registrar, be sure to carefully read their General Service Conditions.
In particular, read the part that forbids various legal activity that most other registrars would allow, such as "activity or Content of racist, xenophobic, or negative character".
You can register a .com domain with Gandi.net for $15 a year. This includes private registration, as well as 5 webmail address through roundcube.
You can use this domain for both your primary and junk email accounts.
I have used Joker in the past - along with Dotster, GoDaddy, Verisign, Network Solutions.
Gandi is by far the best. I know you said you didn't want to move just for DNSSEC, but moving would get you that...and Gandi is hands down the best registrar I have used to date. You will also get to take advantage of all of the other services Gandi has, such as whois privacy. Gandi also donates/supports a lot of profits to various organizations: https://www.gandi.net/supports/ which alone is a reason to to use them.
You need the transfer auth code. Namecheap is notorious for bad .io expiration issues. You have 90 days to renew the domain before it drops and becomes available: http://www.nic.io/renewpolicy.html Once you get the transfer auth code, use gandi.net to transfer the domain: https://www.gandi.net/domain/transfer/
I use Gandi for domain registration, and can highly recommend them.
Definitely second the recommendation to keep your domain reg and webhosting separate. Don't get locked in.
I do my own hosting from a colocated server so can't help you there I'm afraid.
We're waiting for gandi, our CA, to support it: https://twitter.com/gandibar/status/509116131173748736
Edit: Oh, it looks like they added support recently.
Thanks a lot for replying. I am so confused about .gift where I am looking to buy.
On Uniregistry's page it says that it will be handled by "Dot Gift, LLC" but their application status is "Withdrawn" https://gtldresult.icann.org/application-result/applicationstatus/applicationdetails/1209
GoDaddy is not yet offering it for registration but gandi.net is.
https://www.gandi.net/domain/price/detail/gift/
What should I do? Where/how should I register it? Any help is appreciated.
I've moved a number of domains away from these garbage registrars over to Gandi:
It's a French company and they have a history of standing up to specious things like bogus takedown notices and the like.
Also, if there isn't a requirement to use GoDaddy other than the fact that you are familiar with them, I would use a different registrar.
https://www.gandi.net/, http://www.dynadot.com/ and https://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/services/domains are all good options.
Prøv at tjekke Gandi ud.
If you haven’t bought a domain already, gandi.net offers 2 free email accounts with it. Very easy and good to deal with (even amazon aws buys the domain names through them, so they are not as “small” as one might assume looking at their humble website).
Some DNS providers like Gandi (https://www.gandi.net/en-US) gives you free emails (with aliases) when you buy a domain name for $15/year.
Same with Namecheap, you buy a cheap .COM for $6/year but you must add an email package for $1/month (https://www.namecheap.com/hosting/email/).
Go Daddy is trash IIRC.
Gandi is worth a look.
Been using them for domain registration for years (no complaints whatsoever). As for email, free Gsuite was pretty sweet, but I guess this is the way I’ll go now.
Move the domain to Gandi - they include 2 x 3GB e-mail accounts in the registration price.
Storage can be increased, check out their website for more information:

If your billing address is Japan, Gandi will charge in JPY. You can see their rates in their rates table (pdf). The table is updated very often, primarily due to changes in domain pricing, but rates usually stay static (e.g., one domain I renewed back in May still has the same rate as in the table)
That highlighting is something that I did not know. Have to try that later. Thanks. I know people that use Porkbun but I do not use it myself. And the availability thing is strange. It is not a popular domain but I would have expected at least that the a, b and c domains have gone… I also found gandi.net https://www.gandi.net/en/domain/tld/wang but I have never heard of them. They have also the a.wang domain available.
I use gandi.net (french hosting) with Flask + SQLite3
https://www.gandi.net/en/simple-hosting#main-content offer S+
It is not Flask alone but with WSGi
No issue for me.
Serverless and VPS are not your only options, just thought I'd mention for the sake of completion, there are hosting providers that offer Node hosting as shards. Very similar to "classic" hosting as far as you're concerned (you upload files, they do the rest), but use cloud hosted shards to do it. Here's an example.
Possible downsides compared to low level cloud services or VPS: you need to get a domain with them, or transfer one, since they tend to do their whole setup in the context of a domain name they can manage (they automate things around it).
Another limitation might be the resources used, the cost/performance for specific scenarios may favor the DIY cloud solution. It depends a lot on what you're gonna use it for.
Never assume the email was received just because it's in the Sent folder. The receiving server could be set up to inform successful delivery for every message... even when delivered to the trash.
Speaking of trash: GoDaddy. You should move to another platform. Here is a link to a r/webdev search for 'godaddy'. The post titles should be convincing enough.
IMO, The best email host for someone who doesn't know any better would be Office 365 from BlueHost. Next would be Google GSuite. (Followed by Gandi.net, a completely word-of-mouth company with the slogan "No Bullshit". A little more technical, but with stellar customer service.)
I've been using GANDI and INWX for a while now and am happy with both.
A bit of a downside of inwx.com is that you have to manually top up your funds before a renewal but they send you lots of reminder emails when a domain is up for renewal. Personally, I always use that to check if their rates are still sensible or if I need to look for an alternative.
So .cloud for instance
> Starting at ~~€25.96~~ €6.97 per year .... Renewal €14.00 per year
so assuming a switch to CF it will be.... €14 when time to renew?
Just want ot check I understand what all these numbers mean.
Too bad this page isn't available as a CSV... I could spend 45 mins making one I guess. Then it could be sorted easily.
Gandi will list out all domains with various rates. You can't search, but its pretty easy to scroll through. Some of the cheap ones I found were .business, .ca, .cloud, and .cn.
Would you recommend a registrar? Or all roughly the same?
I have used https://www.gandi.net/ in the past (distant past). After doing a 'whois' on the domain, the developers information seems to be recorded such as their company and business number. The REGISTRANT section has his business name.
I'm not 100% sure if that means the developer is in direct control of the domain and server.
Could it still be that the domain is controlled by the client?
Well that still pointing here for NS
;spacelords.dog. IN NS
;; ANSWER SECTION: spacelords.dog. 86400 IN NS dns101.registrar-servers.com. spacelords.dog. 86400 IN NS dns102.registrar-servers.com.
You need to get your registrar to change where your domain points to for NS..
I show that domain registrar as, not namecheap. So you transferred the domain it seems but not where it points for NS.
Domain Name: spacelords.dog Registry Domain ID: 3c272c67997949738ea9ac1e982773f3-DONUTS Registrar WHOIS Server: whois.gandi.net Registrar URL: https://www.gandi.net
I do not recommend freenom.org. They have shitty TOU where they allow themselves to route traffic with your ns if you don't have enough traffic. You can go to https://www.gandi.net/fr which is quite privacy saving ( it was created by one of the greatest privacy advocate in France, Laurent Chemla)
AWS SES pricing $0.10 per 1,000 emails

There's also
https://www.gandi.net/en/domain/email
You can use Gsuite for multiple domain names. I had a couple of domain names hosted on Namecheap and transferred them to Cloudflare domain name registry. I've had no problem with Namecheap so far but I wouldn't host anything with them.
https://www.gandi.net/en/simple-hosting/wordpress
They take care of the caching for you and include TLS/SSL certificates. You can switch up and down between plans (payment is prorated) if you need to so I'd recommend starting on the small one. Here's their full hosting offer. You can share the same hosting instance for multiple websites. They have a 10 day free trial, you just make an account and play around with it.
The only catch is that they physically host in France/Luxembourg. This means that visitors from remote parts of the world may experience small latency. It's usually not a big deal for this type of websites, just thought I'd mention it. And like I said you can do a trial so you can see for yourself.
I use Protonmail. If you upgrade to a paid account you can use your own domain. This requires a bit of technical knowledge. You'll also want to study things like SPF and DKIM records for your DNS.
If Protonmail were to terminate, you could always change the DNS records and point to another provider that you want.
This way, you'll always retain your email address no matter how many email providers you had. I have my own domain for over twenty years and have used about six different email providers with little to no problems. In my opinion, it's the way to go.
I use https://www.gandi.net/en-US and they will give you three free email addresses with your paid domain. This makes it easier when you change email providers.
No, I just had the one email account, gmail. Maybe that would have solved my problem. Good suggestion. I ended up switching to gandi for email. Still on Google for everything else though.
Says they charge 16.39 for a .dev. idk if your registrar will hold up the transfer process, lots of scummy registrars do that (Netsol, namecheap, dotster, godaddy, etc.).
If this is for a business need, it's not about low cost, it's about management and flexibility. Gandi is a dollar or two more a month, and their support is top notch. Web UI supports damn near everything too.
I was with namecheap for some time, but they can't do IPv6 or DNSSEC. Their support is incompetent.
If your time is worth nothing, then anyone other than gandi, but I don't mind spending an extra dollar or two to have intelligent support.
yeah, that one is probably a scam.
" Registrar Info Name Gandi SAS Whois Server whois.gandi.net Referral URL https://www.gandi.net Status clientTransferProhibited https://icann.org/epp#clientTransferProhibite
There are a few places that you can buy them pretty cheap. I however recommend https://www.gandi.net/ They are based out of France and hence out of the USA jurisdiction. They also keep the whois information private.

The OP went with godaddy which I have issues with for multiple reasons, but they also have privatized whois. They are based out of Texas and thus privy to usa law and law firms.
I do but clothing has very little legal liability, so you're ok to do it under your name. I'd say at the very least though have a domain for your brand, helps you register rights later if you need to. Gandi is cheap for domain registration + free private https://www.gandi.net/en
Don't look up domains on godaddy they are shady at best. I tend to use Gandi or Namecheap when searching for domain availability as they don't tend to pull crap like this.
You can always use a different TLD like the one for your country or .me, .io, .cc, .net etc there are a lot to pick from for varying prices. Also consider using your last name, which lets you have and firstname.lastname.tld (as well as ones for your family).
That article you linked to probes that they’re servers were seized.
“According to DNSDumpster.com - Looks like they had a reverse proxy setup in OVH Canada. I guess this is what they are claiming was seized? The origin server is with https://abelohost.com - You can tell by their poorly configured MX (E-Mail) domain records. Their .eu domain is registered through https://www.gandi.net which is not pirate friendly at all. OVH Canada is located in Beauharnois, QC, Canada. So I guess their story with the "Quebec Police" seems to at least make sense. If you ping tehconnection.eu right now it goes to "185.207.204.177" which is owned by AbeloHost.com - Looks like they are serving that warning message from their main server in the Netherlands (AbeloHost). Not sure how smart that is...
Here’s a article from Torrentfreak.
Quote by TC’s owner-
“Built on Security TC is all about security. Here’s a quote from one of the admins of TehConnection:
“Another big issue in the life of torrents nowadays in Security. Well look no further, we ourselves are very security minded, so we have done our best to make TC a safe tracker. We host in Canada (Oh Canadaaa) one of the few countries in the world, where torrents are legal! In the datacenter we will be hosting in, they have an estimated 25-30 private torrent sites online and over 100 public torrent trackers. To top it all off, we have a secure private cage/rack available to us whenever needed! How does the cage protect us, well apart for the biometric scans and card key access you need to enter the facility, it will be located in an undetermined section of the massive datacenter.”
I registered my domain name through gandi.net and use gandi-live-dns to update the DNS record via their API.
Lots of places combine domains and email services, either you buy hosting and they throw in a domain for free or the other way around. gandi.net for example will give you email for free with any domain you buy from them or transfer to them. So it's basically just the cost of the domain. Plus you get to pick a unique cool name to go after @, something that nobody else has.
Not only a static IP, but you'll need to make sure that your ISP allows http-requests to it.
You'll also need a domain-name registrar if you want people to be able to reach your website using a domain name instead of a raw IP address. E.g., using “example.com” instead of “93.184.216.34”.
In case you care: for hosting services, I've been happy with Laughing Squid. $4/month. For domain-name registration I use Gandi.net. It's never jerked me around (so far).
>my family have amassed a lot of wealth from being self-employed businesspeople and that's really my only point of reference on how to succeed. The problem is I know that to succeed there you have to do things like buy stock from people down on their luck, you have to undercut your competition and you have to trick your customers in to paying more for something they could buy for less with more knowledge.
You could start an ethical business. They do exist. For example, Gandi is a domain registrar that has an explicit no bullshit promise. There is also something called the Open Company Initiative. Businesses like these do not make as much money as their competition, but they provide trustworthy products and services and genuinely care about their customers.
I'm sure because the main content of the website are the images and I know for a fact that in total they will be between 4 and 5gb. They can be optimized, but not sure how much. Plus they will be copied in multiple sizes, plus bakcups.
Anyway, I'm considering this, now: https://www.gandi.net/hosting/simple?language=php&db=mysql
Exactly, thats why I'm asking.
I mean, hosting own mail server at US based company is still better than using Google Mail I guess. But I thought maybe redditors have some other suggestions where to host it.
Edit: just wanted to add that gandi.net also provides VPS host although it seems a little pricier than mentioned providers. Any thoughts of Gandi? Also, its not usually best idea to have a some provider for domains and servers. I would use Gandi for domain registration.
Edit2: just a note that Gandi also supports bitcoins. (https://www.gandi.net/payment/)
Gandi does offer WHOIS protection (private domain registration) though. And I'm using it in fact (and it doesn't cost extra).
Just note that there are some TLDs that don't allow it (e.g. .US domains).
Here's the full list of TLDs that Gandi does offer WHOIS protection on.
KS for Kingdom of Scotland's available, too.
Very unfair when Wales has .wa available right away!
Hmm. .gs belongs to South Georgia and the South Sandwitch Islands, and they let you register right at the second level.
bawba.gs, anyone? :)
You may want to shop around at other registrars. I've been with Gandi for 15 years now and they do not charge extra for obfuscation (this might need to be enabled manually, though). For a .org domain, it looks like they charge $22 CAD (~$17 USD, I'm pretty sure they normally price in Euros).
.uk
has a policy that exempts non-trading individuals from having their address published in whois.
gandi.net also offer a whois privacy service and list the tlds that it's applicable for: https://wiki.gandi.net/en/domains/private-registration/gandi-provided
> Make sure that YOU own the domain name yourself through a service such as Godaddy (good for domain registration, bad for hosting) or other domain registrar.
I'd suggest taking a look at Gandi.net. They're an excellent registrar, and their company slogan is "no bullshit."
If you hunt around you can find providers who do their own version of "cloud hosting", some of which is very good.
Gandi (FR) stands out with the ability to do static, PHP, Python, Ruby or Node with various different databases available:
https://www.gandi.net/hosting/simple
TSO Host (UK) offer either a PHP/MySQL or ASP/MSSQL cloud service which can be expanded as your site grows:
https://www.tsohost.com/web-hosting
I'm sure with a bit of searching you could find similar US based options.
I do believe Gandi offers DNS management for your domain without having a web hosting package... personally I don't use their nameservers because I've already had my records managed elsewhere, but I have transferred multiple domains over to them without any issue.
And then there's that kind of sfuff to ponder:
> So you'd rather blindly follow the FSF's decision than to do your own research? In any case, it's still in the latest version: https://www.gandi.net/contracts/en/g2/pdf/
Well, I'm on a mobile with no PDF reader so...
And yes, I'd rather follow the FSF because in case of a seizure of my domain by Gandi I can email them (cc to rms) and start a new public outrage. Following suit with law- and privacy-sensitive big names sounds like a good tradeoff to me in this consumer orientation nightmare : it's either that or reading tens of lengthy indigestible ToS to compare across registrars.
> Ironic, too, that the FSF would choose a registrar that champions the validity of intellectual property in their ToS despite being explicitly opposed to IP themselves.
Guess that there are virtually no registrar that doesn't include IP provisions, probably because they abide by laws that use the concept. (And don't forget copyleft is entirely dependent on copyright, which is part of the generic "IP" fallacy).
Now, please provide me with a known case of Gandi domain seizure for immorality ? I admit it is really bad they have those provisions since it creates legal insecurity for their clients, but in the meanwhile I'll try to focus on more urgent threats...
Wait. This is quite bad actually: http://cyberinsecure.com/french-registrar-gandinet-takes-down-anti-google-privacy-proxy/.
Sigh... Gandi (was founded and) used to be run by a well-known French hacktivist, but money-seeking managers killed it :/
So you'd rather blindly follow the FSF's decision than to do your own research? In any case, it's still in the latest version: https://www.gandi.net/contracts/en/g2/pdf/
Ironic, too, that the FSF would choose a registrar that champions the validity of intellectual property in their ToS despite being explicitly opposed to IP themselves.
Gandi. They literally promise "no bullshit". I've been with them for a few years, and can testify that I have seen no bullshit whatsoever from them in that time.
Thanks for replying. I am running headless browsers or requests in parrallel, each one in its own docker container the system is decribed here. http://johnpauljanecek.github.io/controlling-docker-containers-with-python-rpyc/
As I increase the amount of processes, the amount of requests will increase, and then after a certain point it will decrease. So I don't knoww if I need more RAM or do I need more CPUs.
On sites like https://www.gandi.net/hosting/iaas/ you can set the amount of CPU or RAM per the VPS you setup. But I need to figure out what is limiting me, is it RAM or CPU ? Like it is no use getting more CPU if I should be getting RAM or vice versa.
Obviously I need some library or something to monitor memory/cpu usuage. But what should I do with the results 😃
I asked a really smart guy I knew, and he said something about CPU cycles to RAM ratio. But he is really smart and he just started to talk about theory. It doesn't need to be exact just so I have an idea so I am not shooting in the dark.
Thanks
I hear you. I was in that same position a couple months ago. There were so many options and it didn't make any sense! First, think of looking for a webhost a lot like how you might buy an external hard drive. If you look hard enough, EVERYONE has their personal horror story.
Second, if you are tired of looking over stuff, I would head over to /r/webhosting and pick one of the affiliated web hosters on the side bar. One of the requirements is that a company rep be active on the sub so you can contact them no matter what happens.
I would personally make every effort to stay away from an EIG webhost. Endurance International Group has been gobbling up ALL of the largest webhosters, keeping the brand name, and slashing costs left and right. Extremely lazy but effective investment on their part. Absolutely terrible for customers. (none of the side bar are affiliated with EIG.)
For a name registrar, I recommend Gandi.net. Great, ethical company. People have such good experience with it, that some have even ok'd using it as registrar and webhost.
Regarding you currently spinning your wheels...
I get that too. I hate it! Here's how I deal with it. What's most important at the end of the day is I make progress towards making a decision and/or make a decision I feel comfortable with. When I'm spinning my wheels, here's my thought process:
What decision am I trying to make again?
What have I learned so far?
What is causing a "hang up" in my decision?
Do I have enough info to make a decision?
What info do I need, and where can I get it?
If I'm making progress but it's too slow for my taste, I go to 5.
Hope this helps a little!
Keep it simple and short. That said, it's hard to get a short domain name. I see a lot of people going to alternative top level domains (TLDs). .COM is The domain, but there's no reason to use others. .IO is a popular one. I've used https://www.gandi.net/ to search out names. It's really useful. The other thing is use something like GetXXXX.com or XXXXApp.com You can still call the name of your app XXXX but the domain will be something more actionable. (For example Square is actually squareup.com. Good luck!
