QTTabBar has been working great for me. I think people might have trouble with the sourceforge version, so I recommend using this one instead. It's clearly been updated for Win 10
An alternative to Clover is QTTabBar: http://qttabbar.wikidot.com/
It's not as "Chromey" as Clover, but it works well (and is open source!). There are a ton of features packed in, but I really only use it for tabs and turn off anything else.
List your free apps that have with the daily use of your Windows PC. Me
2 KuTools. Microsoft Office add on that gives more capabilities in batch edit. Available for Microsoft Word and Excel
It happens all the time for me, and Windows Explorer is just as slow when renaming stuff, but that's most probably not MS's fault, since I have QTabBar (although doesn't affect speed of Explorer for me) and about 10 new options in the context menu. QTabBar is much better than Clover - works really well out of the box and has many functions.
Updated version of QTTabBar. I used to use this on my old laptop (win 7), switched to Clover on my new laptop/pc (win 8/8.1) and now back to QTTabBar on my laptop after upgrading it to Windows 10. Clover just isn't very stable or fully integrated - I haven't had any problems with QTTabBar.
Just takes a little while to change the appearance settings to make it look nice.
Perhaps an option until Sets hopefully fast is released. Found out yesterday that after years Qtabbar (tabs in Windows Explorer) got an update recently. To fix bugs with that app in Windows 1809. So far running good here.
Preme - makes minimising, maximising and closing windows easier. just scroll down or up or middle click on the titlebar. can't believe it's not a stock Windows feature.
MPC-HC for videos
foobar2000 for music
Bandizip for archives. I moved to it from 7-zip when I found out about its "extract automatically" features that extracts to a new folder only when there's more than one file or folder in the archive.
7+ Taskbar Tweaker for tweaking taskbar behaviour.
Minibin for a tiny recycling bin icon in the area next to your clock so that you can get rid of the desktop shortcut.
edit: forgot to mention QTTabBar for adding tabs to Explorer. I prefer it to Clover. also make sure to download it from the link I posted, the SourceForge version is outdated.
also qbittorrent because uTorrent sucks and qb is FOSS and constantly updated.
QTTabBar is a great tab module for Windows Explorer. Out of the box it's a little messy but there's a ton of things you can configure to your liking. I absolutely love it. I can share my config file with you if you're interested.
If you miss pressing space bar to preview stuff I also recommend Seer.
I have been using an extension for explorer that adds tabs named QTTabBar. Works pretty great after messing with the settings. Using it for years now and can't live without it anymore.
Yeah once they added automatic updates, or at least started playing with those, and ads it fell squarely under spyware for me. There's no rule against using older 2.0~ versions though without all of the extra bloat. Someone else just linked this alternative, but it's definitely not as sleek at a first glance: http://qttabbar.wikidot.com/
You can extend the Windows Explorer to give you tabs and -I think- split-pane view as well. http://qttabbar.wikidot.com/ Plus a while bunch of other features.
I initially didn't like the Ribbon UI either but I came to recognize that it's actually quite awesome in its current iteration. I think it's an excellent replacement for the traditional toolbar since it hides away when I don't need it.
Did you try this version? There are others (like on sourceforge.net) that haven't been update since 2013.
I only have the tabbar disappear when I connect an encrypted storage. Before I can open it in the explorer I have to enter a password to unlock it. QTTabBar tries to open the storage as soon as it connects, it fails and crashes. But I can simply re-enable the bar.
I've never had any other crashes or freezes.
I use and love Display Fusion for better multi-monitor taskbars, and better wallpaper / lockscreen configurations. It does a lot more besides that is worth looking into. It typically goes on sale in Steam during some of the big sales so keep an eye out.
QTTabBar is also a must, better than clover (and updated recently) which some others have suggested: http://qttabbar.wikidot.com/
cmder for a better console: http://cmder.net/
I never liked this style. These tabs don't really fit the OS well. QTTabBar is completely customizable and has lots of great additional features, and as a bonus, it works perfectly fine in Windows 10.
Can someone confirm QTTabBar works with Windows 8.1?
>Last Update: 2013-05-30
This first lead me to believe it may have compatibility issues with 8.1.
Then I looked at the last update for Clover:
> August 12, 2013
I can confirm Clover works pretty well with 8.1, other than an occasional issue where the window just doesn't load, I have to kill the process, and then it's fine on relaunch.
EDIT: Looks like this version of QTabBar is more up-to-date.
Until MS releases Sets, Qtabbar can add tabs to Windows' File Explorer. And was recently updated, is now compatible with 1809 (incl. dark themed File Explorer). Very stable here on different computers.
I can't live anymore without tabs in file managers too btw.
Posting this again as the problem was more severe than I thought.
BattlEye hits a false positive on QTTabBar
Link to QTTabBar site: http://qttabbar.wikidot.com/
The game launches and makes it to character select, however attempting to play any character results in the game closing instantly within 2 seconds of pressing the Play button.
After removing the TabBar .dll from the location shown in the image, this no longer happened and I was able to play the game.
I already ruled out a few other causes trying to fix this. Restarting my computer didn't work. Restarting the launcher (about 20 times) didn't work. Validating game assets didn't work. Deleting UserOptions.ini didn't work.
Instead of Clover, use QTTabBar.
Clover looks like shit in Win10 and it doesn't really have a lot of features. QTTabBar does everything Clover does, but much better and much more. It's really awesome.
It blows my mind too, OP.
I've been using QTTabbar, use this version: http://qttabbar.wikidot.com/
Make sure to pour through the settings, a lot of the defaults are really stupid. (Disabling window resize? Not automatically capturing mouse back/forward? Come on.)
Hopefully Microsoft will get with the times and throw a bone to people who actually use Windows for work.
the way I have my Windows fiel explorer set up is I disabled that useless top bar with all the copy/paste actions, I disabled the left location panel, and I installed QT Tab Bar which adds tab abilities (among other features) to Windows file explorer.
Everybody is talking about Clover, but I prefer QTTabBar for Explorer tabs.
The name sucks and it's not as pretty as Clover, but I found it much faster and less buggy. Features like
bring it near the top of my list of underrated and unknown super-useful apps.
> QTTabBar
This is the official site. http://qttabbar.wikidot.com/
The SF site is 10 years out of date and the Github that comes up is a CN localization port as a heads up for anyone else searching it.
Use Qttabar It adds tabs function to windows explorer But it also includes a very fast and useful search box If you want to search the whole system use void tools everything
for now you can use groupy or qtbar
you have to enable always show menus and then enable the qt tool bar but then your explorer will have tabs.
Groupy is cool but its a bit diffferent, you can group just about anything in tabs, including different applications. for me its a bit overkill.
Here. http://qttabbar.wikidot.com/ add tabs and more to the file manager is not other file manager. is a plugin for file explorer
The only bad thing I have on it is that I have no way of only permit one instance of file manager so is that
Hi! I don't think, that You can reach the same integration with ++ in Windows as with common Explorer. Try QTTabBar. With this soft You can make basic Explorer looks like Explorer++
Let me introduce you to QTTabBar. This lets you add file explorer tabs just like you have here, only they don't get added to the header but rather a new toolbar below the file path bar. You can skin the tabs to look however you want, too. I've designed a skin to make the tabs look similar to the ones in Chrome.
If you choose to install it, be sure to install version 1038 first, then install version 1040. Enable the toolbar by clicking View > Options DROPDOWN > QTTabBar.
Okay, for tabs and extra views/functions: QTTab Bar
For hidding useless icons and titles i'm using: OldNewExplorer
> needs ctrl t to open new tab like in chrome and other things
> needs to show what file type it is right in the 'file name'
(All for Windows 10)
Taskbar Tweaker Fixes the multiple-taskbar-grouping slowness Ross mentioned. There's an option to have separate taskbars for every window that's open, and you can drag them individually even if you have multiple of the same program open. Double click the taskbar to system-wide mute is also a fantastic feature.
Qttabar adds browser-esque tabs to windows explorer, super useful when the alternative is going through multiple windows open. Can also add bookmarks.
Yes, been using it since 2013 or so, also, there's a version on Source Forge which is outdated as the old developer stopped updating it, the most recent one is here http://qttabbar.wikidot.com/ being supported by Quizo.
It seems my previous comment actually links to a recent fork of a very old version. The more up to date version is here. However, it seems the author of that version doesn't often publish source code.. The latest version with source code available seems to be 1032 (based on the timestamp attached to the source code .zip at the bottom of the linked page, cross-referenced to the timestamps next to each version on the 'old versions' page).
The Clover repack provided by LRepacks is pretty good - they've selected the best versions (there are 3 - v3.0.406: legacy version that supports Chrome themes, and two others (latest development branch, use one if the other doesn't work for you))
And it's packaged into an English installer/uninstaller, so no need to deal with chinese any more. Maybe an alternative?
Some people recommend QTTabBar, though I've experienced memory leaks and that one is a massive pain to configure.
QTTabBar is something I would really recommend. It allows you to have tabs, multiple panes and some other stuff. Only drawback is that it seems to make explorer a tiny bit more unstable than usual. Good idea to enable the option in folder settings for separate explorer processes.
I saw two mentions of Clover as a suggestion, but none about QTTabBar, which, in my opinion, much better, both visually and in terms of features. E.g. one thing I now can't live without is successive presses on F2 focusing at the end of file name, selecting extension and selecting all. It has so many other customizations and features, but of course, you don't have to use any of them if you don't want.
I like it so much that I am not sure I want native tab feature now, as it would probably break QTTabBar and I don't think it would be as good as QTTabBar.
You could use the quizo version the original guy was acting like they were going to fight to support the software only to abandon it soon after

lastupdate as of writing is from Oct 2018 vs the original which was in 2015
QTabBar, by far the best shell extension that ever exists.
Stable, clean fully featured tabbed file explorer browsing. Also enable "Qt Command Bar" (see enable guide on site) for recent file and folder toggles, copy the path and name and any type of has for a file, all in a clean and integrated UI packed with keyboard shortcuts. Currently the settings box is a bit messed up on Windows 10 1703 and above, but still usable. Compatible with Windows 7.
Click on everything, shift click on everything, ctrl scroll on everything. This thing has hundreds of features. It never ends. Make sure to see the documentation.
Much better than clover imo, which constantly crashed my Windows Explorer.
My favourite features are:
Backspace to go up a folder instead of back
Double click on blank white space to go up a folder
ALT + C to copy current folder path
Recent folders accessed
The naming system. Having two tabs open with the same folder name will do something like this to the labels:
Tab 1: FolderName @ C:\
Tab 2: FolderName @ games
The webpage describes it very basically as a way to add tabbed browsing to the built in Windows File Explorer but it really does a whole lot more once you delve into the guts of the program.
Amazing software.
Is clover stable? I useQTabBar right now. It has a plethora of features, like way past tabbing, e.g. set backspace to go up a tree and not back, alt + c to copy folder path, and othrrs to copy any type of hash, its packed. I just want to try clover in a VM. I tried it on my main OS first but it scaled very poorly, had artifacts and crashed explorer every 5 mins. This was on 1703 i think.
Hi everyone,
I understand the drive shows up outside of "This PC" as well, but I'd prefer to only show 1 instance of the external as it can get confusing when I have multiple externals plugged in.
Any ideas how to hide it?
PS. I'm using QTTabBar if there's an option in there to hide it.
Thanks!
QTTabBar http://qttabbar.wikidot.com/. QTTabBar displays Preview Window on media files: image, movie, sound, and text. http://qttabbar.wdfiles.com/local--files/documents/preview.html. and yes, WinRefine is safe if downloaded from the developer home page: http://www.crystalsoft.it/en/products/winrefine-preview-for-mp3-psd-jpg-files-9l however keep in mind that WinRefine was last updated 7 years ago.
And btw, when you are not sure about the legitimacy of certain program, you don't need to install the bulky VirtualBox just to try a small software, Sandboxie is the right answer.
7+ Taskbar tweaker - more options for your taskbar
Faststone image viewer - best image viewer on the market, it is a file manager and basic image editor, very fast and with intuitive interface.
qttabbar - instead of clover, so many more options
ALT + C copies file path (with slashes, so you can use it elsewhere), CTRL + SHIFT + T is a new text document with QTabBar
You also get a whole load of new functions with it (at least 20). Highly recommended. It doesn't slow down File Explorer and doesn't crash either. Really nice. My favourite features are ALT + C and the "filter" box (of you enable the QT Command Bar) where you can just filter by file name instead of waiting for the default windows search function. Not much difference in speed, but it just only shows files with your keywords, instead of searching in folders and highlighting matches like Windows Search. They are different things though.
Right, if you're not using http://qttabbar.wikidot.com/ try it.
It changed my life.
I'm gonna try SageThumbs now for this PSD thumbnail solution
edit: it works! For EPS and PSD - AI not showing for me
https://sourceforge.net/projects/sagethumbs/
Just be sure in your options to customize your max file size, I didn't think it was working at first. But it's cause the PSD file was larger than 10MB
I don't know about Clover but if it doesn't work try QTTabBar. I'm using it fine with OldNewExplorer and I miss the ribbons a bit too, but I can live without them. QTTabBar's options page doesn't look too nice with Dark themes, but it's more or less useable.

Tabs for the explorer
App for searching and fast access to folders
>In fact I'm going crazy: my previous mouse for the SP1 was actually a VX Nano
Dude... No fucking way. I bought the MXA2 because I wanted something like my VX Nano but with bluetooth. I bought the VX Nano for my laptop (a Sager laptop) in - no word of a lie - 2008. Still works great.
>For work I spend an awful lot of time in browsers, file managers, Excel, and Notepad++, and switching between a metric butt-ton of windows. So on the G700 I have: side button pairs: Fwd/Back, Ctrl-T/Ctrl-W (open/close tab)
Yup I too have assigned my top two buttons to new tab / close tab in pretty much every program that has tabs. I use them constantly. I recently discovered QtTabBar for Explorer, I use the same key binds for that.
I don't use the index finger controls too often, but I have them assigned to Next Track/ Play Pause/Prev Track globally. In certain programs I have setup some macros to perform some semi-tedious tasks with them.
For the MXA2, I can't really see myself using the gestures. But I should give them a shot. I might try doing Gesture Left = Snap Window Left (win+left), Gesture Right = Snap Window Right (win+right), Gesture Down = Minimize, Gesture Up = Maximize.
I used the older version QTTabBar on Windows 7. This one says it works on 10, I haven't tried it though.
Qttabbar from http://qttabbar.sourceforge.net/ crashes semi-regularly for me on Win7. You can "Launch folder windows in a separate process" to prevent it from crashing your desktop every time it crashes, but it hasn't been updated in a long time. There's also a Qttabbar fork that's more regularly updated at http://qttabbar.wikidot.com/
Which are you using? The original hasn't seen any development since 2013, it looks like. There's what appears to be a fork that says it supports Windows 10, however.
Ah, thanks for the info. I agree with you, so I don't think I'll be using Clover for now.
Edit: I found a similar program that integrates into Windows Explorer and is open source as well: http://qttabbar.wikidot.com/
However I can't deny that Clover looks nicer.
