I'd recommend Chroma keyboard then, basically the same as Google Keyboard with better customisability in my opinion. No emoji button, you hold enter to get to them, but I've added in an emoji row myself Play Store link and my keyboard.
Try Chrooma Keyboard
Except it totally could because Android has APIs both for detecting when the current activity changes and for grabbing the content of the screen, from which you could calculate an average colour. So I don't know what you're getting at.
Edit: Also it's literally already been done by another keyboard.
My favorite lately has been Chrooma. It has the ability to scroll through text by swiping on the keyboard while also letting you swipe to type. You scroll through text by swiping the space bar and swipe to type on the letters. I haven't had many problems with the corrections so far; it is about comparable to swiftkey and others.
Chrooma Keyboard let's you use use the spacebar to move the cursor and select text. There's also a fuckload of other features, and it's probably the closest you'll get to Google Keyboard besides Google Keyboard.
Absolutely worth checking out.
It comes with Gboard which is pretty great. You can change the height to 150% and add key borders. Maybe that would help. I've been using Chrooma keyboard recently though.
I use Chrooma Keyboard. It offers a bit more customization to the stock keyboard; including resizing and AMOLED black theme, which I use.
Chrooma keyboard for me. It's built off the AOSP keyboard so looks and works similarly to the Google Keyboard, but has a ton of really cool features built in. Like the keyboard changing color to match the app you're in, along with automatic night mode etc.

Chrooma is what I've been using as of late. I use the full version and it has a ton of color options. It's like a more-featured version of Google Keyboard. My favorite feature of it is that you can swipe over the spacebar to move your curser left and right.
I really like the new Google Keyboard, so I kinda bounced back and forth. If you don't know about Chrooma Keyboard it's basically a Google Keyboard replica with some extra features, the big one of which is the ability to adapt the keyboard color to the app you're in. I actually just have that disabled and color matched it to the Material White color. I'm boring.
The reason I use Chrooma over GK is because of the automatic day/night mode. I really like having the keyboard change at night. Easier on the faceballs.
Different suggestion than most here: Chrooma Keyboard
It swipes, it has multi language support, and it changes color based on the app you're currently using.
I use this keyboard: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamelounge.chroomakeyboard
It's basically the Google keyboard but you can change the color to your preference on a per app basis.
While maybe not the best option. If copy, paste and cut buttons are very important to you as they are to me, you should maybe try chroma keyboard
I use either GBoard or Chrooma Keyboard. Both are great!
Chrooma: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamelounge.chroomakeyboard&hl=en
GBoard: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.inputmethod.latin&hl=en
It's essentially an ultra customizable version of Google Keyboard. I highly recommend it, especially with the paid upgrade, it can be tweaked to the moon and back.
If you are talking about the long-press-to-get-symbols-feature, you can get the same feature with Chrooma Keyboard. But I use this keyboard mainly for it's colour changing features.
I was never able to get this to work. Chrooma Keyboard let me have the numbers row and adjust height of KB, so I think it is as close as I will get. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamelounge.chroomakeyboard
I would give a try to this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamelounge.chroomakeyboard It's a simple keyboard that change color within the app. Has the same functionality of the google keyboard (dictionaries, spell prediction, swipe typing)
Don't know the private alternative, but if you'd be willing to trade 'near certain spying by Microsoft' for 'possible spying by an unknown party', I use Chrooma (avaiilable under Apache license)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamelounge.chroomakeyboard
This keyboard does this, i am using it right now. space gesture long press on space bar and swipe right/left to move cursor.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamelounge.chroomakeyboard
It's been maybe 2 years since I looked around, but I settled on this one for whatever reason.
No complaints really. Kinda curious if I'm missing anything, but I'm happy overall :)
I've been using the Chrooma Keyboard to great extent as of late. Have been pretty happy with it so far. Used to enjoy Nintype, but the predictions started going off the rails similar to Gboard, so I ended up giving up on it.
It's fairly easy, esp. if you haven't enabled One Button Nav.
This is the one I use right now, it changes colors based on the app you're using: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamelounge.chroomakeyboard
Since I like Gboard, I haven't used this in a while, but this is a very customizible alternative that I liked enough to buy. May need to revisit it, myself:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamelounge.chroomakeyboard
I move chrooma keyboard anda it has that function plus it adopts teu colour of the app You are using.
Lets put it this way: If Gboard was a Volkswagen, this would be the Audi
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamelounge.chroomakeyboard
when you apply the wallpaper through the Theme Store, it asks you how to apply it, Home Screen, Lock Screen or both.
the nav bar turning white is the keyboard issue. the keyboard needs to support this feature (coloring the nav bar). not many keyboard do but this one does. as an alternative solution you can set up this app to color it for you.
Switched to chrooma several months ago and its honestly way better. Swiftkey used to be good with its predictions and autocorrect but recently it's become a liability
try chrooma. its awesome and fully customizable. plus it let's you have iOS emojis
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamelounge.chroomakeyboard
look: example
I'm a big fan of Chrooma!!, I used it before they had a big update (in which it was decent) and now a number of weeks after a huge update of there I'm completely in love with it. Has an optional number row, skwype and great auto-correct. They recently implemented a cool clipboard as well. Perfectly customizable and looks fantastic, check em out.
The Chrooma Keyboard is basically Google Keyboard with a chameleon theme (and many other tweaks). You might want to check it out.
> Google Keyboard replaced the AOSP keyboard back in Android 4.2.
No, it didn't. Google Keyboard came out in Android 4.2, and Google stopped shipping AOSP keyboard with Nexus devices, but continued to update it with new versions of Android.
> It still exists but it hasn't been used in Nexus phones or anything for years.
Wrong. It still exists but it hasn't been used in Nexus phones for years. It's been used in plenty of other things, including custom roms, third-party keyboards like Chrooma Keyboard (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamelounge.chroomakeyboard), and on the phones of everybody who doesn't want Google to have a keylogger on his phone.
> It doesn't have any gesture typing or features like that.
Yeah, it does. Until today, it had exact feature parity with Google Keyboard.
People gravitate towards Chrooma Keyboard these days. It is pretty much a beefed up Google Keyboard. Bought it a few days ago, i enjoy it so far.
Apps:
Chrooma Keyboard: Wonderful keyboard app. I recently tried to get into swipe typing again and this has just been perfect for me. I especially love the one-handed mode.
Pulsar: Great Material design music player with SD card support.
Y Music: Listen to songs on YouTube in the background and download them for offline listening.
ZipSigner: Sign APKs to unlink them from the Play Store and stop receiving updates.
Games:
Blockinger: Open source Tetris clone.
Miniature garden: Guide a cute little pixel cat to some tuna by placing arrows in the proper places.
There You Go: A 3D room escape game.
Triangles: Put triangles together while making sure the sides that touch have the same pattern. Surprisingly harder than it sounds.
■ Square it!: Fill the board by moving the squares. Great for just killing some time.

This is the best keyboard I could find for free
Consider the following:
Unlock developer options and set animations to x0.5 (it really makes a difference in how fast you navigate your phone and complete tasks).
Upgrade to Android N Developer Preview 4 because it's smooth and stable (I've had no issues/bugs/crashes but you can always check the known issues under Preview 4 )
Install Chrooma Keyboard, it's got plenty of neat features/customizations and adapts to your current app (if it doesn't adapt correctly, you can always hold the comma down and change the color there).
Check out some launchers such as Evie and check out KLWP and KLWP themes (here's one of my free ones)
If you get on Preview 4, you can make some Automatic Rules (I think you can do this in Marshmallow too) such being on silence after 9PM
Chrooma Keyboard has dedicated cut, copy, paste buttons on the top for quick access.
That's https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamelounge.chroomakeyboard
Apart from other features, I use the RGB theme to complement the Chroma logo at the back of my Razer Phone 2.
Chrooma Keyboard or Google Keyboard
i dont get why people are so scared of 3rd party stuff.
try out chrooma, you won't regret it
I think Chrooma Keyboard has this as an option. It's based on Google Keyboard.
I'd recommend this one. Works great and looks great.
Chrooma Keyboard does exactly that
Chrooma Hydrogen is pretty cool!
Chrooma I believe has that feature
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamelounge.chroomakeyboard&hl=en
I've been pretty pleased with Chrooma, especially as it supports swiping.
Chrooma Keyboard does this.
Try using chrooma keyboard. It works pretty well and looks good with most apps.
Chrooma keyboard is based on Google keyboard, but with extra customisations
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamelounge.chroomakeyboard
Give Chrooma Keyboard a try. It has multiple language support and is basically an extension of Google Keyboard.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamelounge.chroomakeyboard
If you delete the other app it should refund you.
Check out Chrooma it's very similar to Google Keyboard but very customizable if you don't want to go the root route.
There is this new keyboard based off Google Keyboard called Chrooma. You can turn on the number row in settings.
Chrooma keyboard looks like Google's keyboard and has this option...its also super customizable. worth a look see
Chrooma keyboard is pretty great.
I use Chrooma Keyboard, It does exactly what you're asking for plus more. The downside is you have to pay a small price for it. I suggest giving it a try, if you don't like it you have 2 hours to refund it :) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamelounge.chroomakeyboard
My favorite keyboard app.
Awesome live wallpaper, that shows the weather and time in real time, can also be used as a weather app.
Edit: disregard this suggestion.
Maybe chrooma. It's like Gboard but with more options and theming.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamelounge.chroomakeyboard
I personally don't use it too much because it's auto correct kind of sucks.
I agree, you should try Chrooma keyboard. It's all the perks of GBoard, but lighter on resources and way more customization.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamelounge.chroomakeyboard
Edit: can someone explain why I'm getting down voted for suggesting an alternative keyboard?
I'm switching to Chroma: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamelounge.chroomakeyboard
