Retro Music Player is a fully-featured player with an interface that's a cool mix of material and iOS design.
Simple Gallery is what I finally replaced QuickPic with. Light, simple, yet it can do everything I need, highly recommended.
try this music player, it is very beautiful and puts Google Play Music to shame
Edit: in terms of design. It only support local files, also. Edit 2: the app is still on beta so some features might not be there but it works really well.
My favourite music player is Retro Music Player. Simple layout, no ads, all the functionality I need from a music player (including editing ID3 tags)
<strong>Retro Music Player</strong> is my favourite music player by far. I've been using it for the last couple of months and it's customisable and a beauty. I would choose it with my eyes closed over other options such as Phonograph.
<strong>Minty Icons Free</strong> is a nice icon pack. Round, Material Design-like, colorful and cute. I tend to quickly jump between icon packs, but I've stuck with this one for a long time.
Just stumbled across Retro Music Player. Makes me wish I still kept a local music library on my phone. Probably best looking music app I've seen to date.
Retro Music Player. Based on Phonograph. It's a little buggy and the dev is changing the look of things every update, but it has very nice design.
Give Retro Music Player a shot. It has folder playing, a very nice and clean UI and the now playing screen has a volume scrubber.
I highly recommend the app Retro Music Player. it's the same functionality as GPM with extremely better UI design and feel.
One app I would definitely recommend for any music gurus is 'Retro Music Player.'
Just like a previous person said, I also had trouble finding a music player that didn't have ads, had a nice UI, and could tag songs properly. Retro Music Player fits all of those qualities.
The UI can be quite customizable, even without paying for the premium. You can customize the way all of your songs are displayed, the 'Now Playing' screen, the colours, pretty much everything. The artist pages also provide a lot of information, from the artists bio provided by last.fm to their profile pictures on the same service.
The only thing I wish the developer would add, is cloud music storage access. I have a Mega.nz drive full of songs, and have to download them to my device to listen. It would be pretty cool to be able to access or even safe these songs for offline use in the Retro Music Player app. Maybe even provide a website or something for it too.
Anyway, my app recommendation this week is Retro Music Player. :)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=code.name.monkey.retromusic
I believe the premium is a price of $1.99
If look is important then try,
Blackplayer Ex - Change theme settings and It looks better imo. Blackplayer ex has good customisations/features.
You can also try shuttle+ and phonograph.
Retro Music Player for a customizable, very slick player. Vinyl Music Player for an open source, simple yet beautiful one.
You could hypothetically pirate it. My favorite music player for on devices files is retro music player: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=code.name.monkey.retromusic
Or you can download a unlocked Spotify APK: https://racaty.com/er2hzdidou12
All hypothetical and I am in no way condoneing or incouraging illegal behavior, the above methods are for educational purposes ;)
You can try Retro music Player. Enable full screen control from settings of the app. And you will have good looking lockscreen control. like this one. you can always swipe right from it & It will show your original lockscreen in case you need to see notifications without unlocking the phone.
Since I switched to Android 2 years ago, I've been using Retro Music Player which has been great since day 0 honestly. I highly recommend it.
Retro Music Player is what I use! I upgraded to premium for some small bonus things but iirc it has all the features you're looking for + it just looks really nice.
Thanks for the response. The name Retro Music Player kind of turned me away because - well, this thread's title shows that I want a player that has "modern" aesthetics... haha. But I followed your suggestion and am pleasantly surprised! I don't understand why it's called "Retro" when it uses Material Design.
I think its 4.4 rating based on 29,527 reviews is well deserved.

Bottom line:
I use Retro music player
Though it works only on your local music and not on Spotify. But if you are gonna need something for your local music and need that lockscreen then use retro music player
Retro player has an option to enable lockscreen player.
Also for any music player apps. Go to it's app info > other permissions > Enable "Show on Lockscreen". (Xiaomi disables it by default. Enable it so that It doesn't create any problem on lockscreen.)
A quick search on Google Play - Retro Music Player
I personally haven't tried it before, but it's recommended a lot on this sub
okay but isn't this just a fork of Retro Music Player?
did you add anything to it or are you just shamelessly trying to profit off of it
Try out Retro Music Player. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=code.name.monkey.retromusic
Good amount of customization, material design, and responds to dynamic color in Android 12 devices. Check it out
It's on the discord server, you can find the link in the 'About me' page inside the app.
However I never used it because apparently is very buggy, that's why it hasn't been published.
If there's some feature that you miss, Retro Player is being updated again. Also I recently found Pulse Music if you want to give it a try. Both are really similar to Oto with their own little changes, but also both are open source unlike Oto.
I like Retro Music. There are a variety of customization options, too: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=code.name.monkey.retromusic
I don't think that Poweramp is very pretty on its own, but there are many third-party themes for it that can make it look nice.
Metro ( Best material design music player for Android)should be added to the music player list.
https://f-droid.org/en/packages/io.github.muntashirakon.Music/
It's the pro version of Retro in the play store.

Retro Music.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=code.name.monkey.retromusic
The best part is, the app is very actively updated, is super clean & the developers are great and listen to your feedback.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=code.name.monkey.retromusic I don't rly listen to music stored on my phone cuz I usually use spotify but I have heard that retro music player should be good
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=code.name.monkey.retromusic
This is Retro Music. Please try this instead. I've been using this for a long time now. Oto music player looks like a simple version of this app. The developer of retro is very active and the app receives regular feature and stability updates! Much more customisable, smoother animations, better features.
You should be able to connect your phone with a usb cable to the computer and use nautilus(files) to copy music files to your phone, I use RetroPlayer to listen music on my phone
I'd personally suggest you take a look into Retro Music Player, it takes some design cues from Material Design, iOS and other popular music apps and looks and feels really nice and is very easy to use.
You can try this one. It just ask you to confirm when you want to add the same song twice to playlist.
Retro Music Player 🎵

Retro Music Player or Vinyl Music Player. I like those apps, they are good and simple.
A disappointment was the music players... Out of all the options, I can say only one was good in terms of UI. Actually, that's a thing were ios still beats android, and it's the apps. In general they're better designed, not only in terms of functionality, but also appearance. So if you don't like Retro Music Player ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=code.name.monkey.retromusic ), then there are no good music players for you.
If you want an offline music player, Retro Music Player is a good one. It could have less features compared to the one you're using tho.
I can recommend Retro Music Player. Was recommended here some time ago. Loved the clean design and smoothness. See if it fits your criteria.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=code.name.monkey.retromusic
Download and try retro app for Android - it's a nice app. It's great for local music, downloads album covers and artists pictures etc. But functionally I prefer Musicolet. Keeps the list well and is primarily a music player.
Give them a try...
Unable to make recommendations for a better app though...
Here you go: This is the one I use. It's free for the most part and you only need to pay for more customizations, that's all https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=code.name.monkey.retromusic
that's my favourite music player too!
looks like the bot didn't get it.. here's the link anyway.. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=code.name.monkey.retromusic&hl=en_US
> I've been using the Retro Music Player {https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=code.name.monkey.retromusic&hl=en_US} and really love the design and customization options it has.
A good music player?? VLC is.
But a music player with good UI and lots of customization?? It's not.
Retro Music Player allows you to seek on the lockscreen. But you have to activate the player's full screen mode in the settings.
the perfect app does exist mate. retro music. just tap the album art for lyrics. free+ad-free.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=code.name.monkey.retromusic
Solid explorer works okay once you've got everything set up.
I agree with you about photos, it's not very simple or elegant to use, especially when you have 3 or 4 different photo apps on your device. Now I just use Google photos for pretty much everything since it backs it all up automatically and privately for free.
The stock music app in bb10 was pretty much the best. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=code.name.monkey.retromusic <--i like the simplicity of this one but YMMV
This music player does too https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=code.name.monkey.retromusic
+1 for Blackplayer Ex.
Retro Music Player also has a good UI.
Haven't heard of Retro before. I'm guessing its this one:
It's called Retro Music Player.

If you want something ultra simple, Music Player Go from F-droid is great as well.
It's Retro Music Player. Extremely good, has taken over for Poweramp as the best player out there
Retro Music Player. It's based on Phonograph and has additional features.
Check out Retro Music Player
It's a blend of iOS and Material design. My favourite player right now.
Yup. It looks like that's the case.
Install good music app from playstore. (Don't use those generic music players with ads & excessive permissions.)

This one is a single page setup. The music player theme is inspired from Retro music player. Only if the whole theme had been just the music player then I probably could have participated in the contest :P But it's not, so here ya go.

If you aren't steaming the music, there are 3rd party apps for you. My favorite is Retro Music
This one is pretty good. Great aesthetics.

WTF is up with using link shorteners?
Here is the real link - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=code.name.monkey.retromusic
I've been enjoy Retro Music
For local music I use Retro and I love the customization you get with it.
I suggest you try Retro music probably better than any OEM player for looks and library management
Give a try to Music Player - MP3 Player - Retro(I know, not exactly a good name). Unique feature of it is that it gives daily mixes and other generated playlists that you get from a streaming service but from your local music files. Also gives you top artists and top albums on your landing screen. And it's open source - https://github.com/h4h13/RetroMusicPlayer
There is a fork of this app named metro which gets rid of google play libraries and provides paid features for free. https://github.com/MuntashirAkon/Metro
Btw the pro features on the retro is ₹60, high chance that even in other countries it would be under or around 1USD. So if you happen to try metro and like it, do consider paying retro if you have some google credits in play store. Considering that this app is ad-free even in free segment, I think we should try to support the devs however we can.
Retro Music Player is a good one.
Retro music is really nice https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=code.name.monkey.retromusic
Most of the popular music players do this.
I'm using retro music player. And it works just fine
Retro music player has been my daily since many years now. It has really good UI and lots of features. Plus the dev is super active with updates and feature requests. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=code.name.monkey.retromusic
I briefly used Shuttle too. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=another.music.player
For the niche category of people who love Windows phone UI, there's this music player called ZPlayer. It's based on Zune's UI, and the app is really well made. It also has podcasts, online radio, music discovery etc. It's on the Play Store. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.odesanmi.and.zplayer
I think you might just have to create folders yourself and organize them yourself. That would probably be very tedious if you have a lot of music. If music is your primary concern and you aren't worried much about navigating other types of files, then you might be better off just using a music playing app for navigating through you music. These apps usually use embedded metadata tags to organize the music, rather than just the files names.
These are some of my favorites:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=code.name.monkey.retromusic
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kabouzeid.gramophone

If your music happens to be organized in folders on your computer, you could copy over the folders to your phone and that should preserve the directory structure, which would eliminate the need to manually organize them.
I Use retro Music player. You can personalize the look to get what You are looking for https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=code.name.monkey.retromusic
Try Retro music player You can even get modded version, just Google it.
Retro Music Player look modern and has a lot of useful Features too.. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=code.name.monkey.retromusic
You should try Retro Music Player . It has a beautiful design and has dark mode.
Retro Music Player or Spotify
That's not a Moto Z4 problem, that's an Android problem. I think that's what's confusing a lot of the others in this post. Most of us have used Android for a long time and are just used to it working this way, as opposed to you coming from a completely different ecosystem where it works completely differently.
Now, I did some digging for you.
According to this Reddit post, it used to be possible in Android, but they took it away. However, it looks like it might be coming back with Android 10, which hopefully the Z4 will be getting in the next several months.
However, I thought that this also seems like it might be music player dependent, so I found this post that mentions an app called Retro Music Player that lets you do this. I installed it, and it may work for what you need. You have to go into Settings, then Personalize, then turn on Fullscreen Controls. It then lets you seek from the lock screen, but it also takes over your lock screen and it seems you won't see any of your other notifications.
Hope that helps some.
Retro Music Player: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=code.name.monkey.retromusic
Just a good mp3 player, not a streaming service.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=code.name.monkey.retromusic

Retro Music - Favourite music player has got some really good looking material designs
ADM - Solid download manager equivalent to IDM for pc
Boost - Easily the best Reddit client I've used
FX - An ad-free file explorer with an easy to use intuitive design
F-droid - An open source repository for android apps, believe me it's very essential and it's got numerous helpful apps.
Retro Music if anyone is interested.

retro music has a nice modern ui with good theming options and lyrics https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=code.name.monkey.retromusic
I'll preface for saying these are all for Android;
Retro Music Player - Far better than the default Play Music, with much better theme customisation and sorting.
Snapseed - Great free image editing tool by Google.
Inbox by Gmail - Far better than the standard Gmail app, much nicer interface, and much cleaner organisational features.
Google Photos - Allows auto-backup management to Google Drive, especially to only do so when connected to WiFi. This comes as default on stock Android devices, so you may already have this.
WeQ4u - Allows you to call any premium rate number using your inclusive minutes, also allows you to hang up when in a queue, and it'll call you back when an agent finally answers.
Now Playing Register - More for users who have a Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL, but this saves all the "now playing" songs for you to look at ones previously picked up for your phone, which is basically in inbuilt auto-Shazam feature of the phone.
WiFi File Transfer Pro - Quick wireless file transfers through a web UI for devices on the same network. Fantastically easy to add files to your device.
Teamviewer - Remote access app, allows access to all devices on your Teamviewer account. Does what every other Teamviewer app does, basically.
Accubattery - Detailed info regarding battery health/charging info on your phone. Works well paired with GSam Battery Monitor Pro.
Finally, Sync for Reddit (Pro). By far my favourite Reddit app I've ever had over multiple environments.
What happens with this one? It's built on phonograph fwiw
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=code.name.monkey.retromusic
You could try cleaning the app's data. If it doesn't work you can always try other music players such as this
Get Retro Music Player. It's the best player.
There's an app called YMusic that's not on Google play. You can download whole playlist as mp3 320kbps (very high quality) if you wanted to. Just make sure when you have the app installed... DONT UPDATE THE APP. It takes away the high quality mp3 option we all hold dear to our hearts. Then I use an app called Retro Music for playback of what you have downloaded. I've uploaded the apk to google drive for you so you can easily download it.
YMusic* (Can be used by hitting share button within a YouTube video and then clicking the download with YMusic option!) https://drive.google.com/file/d/19v9kzpol8lM3tBI_hYFJIfvrQGY6pdzV/view?usp=drivesdk

Make sure to set the download option to mp3 before downloading a song!!
