Reminds me of this article as well, about how google maps accidentally created a new neighbourhoodo in Maspeth, Queens for similar reasons:
Welcome to Haberman, Queens! Population: 0
The article also discusses the erasure of historically black neighbourhoods, perhaps most notably, the "fruit belt" neighbourhood.
Congrats on the yard! I was in a similar situation, tried and failed trying to broadcast a grass/clover mix. It was too hot and I couldn't keep up with watering. My neighbor was more successful buying expensive sod.
Instead, I got some fabric planters and filled them with potting soil and plants. Yes your yard will still have a dirt floor but these will get you a lot of greenery for cheap. And bonus, you can grow veggies. You should absolutely not grow edible plants in your ground without a heavy metals soil test. A lot of nyc dirt is toxic. Soil tests can be sent to Cornell but cost ~$150. You can buy a lot of potting mix with that amount.
Optimum has always been solid for me. Are you having internet problems or wifi problems? Try your connection out with an ethernet cable and see if it's better. If you're in an area with TONS of other wifi networks like me, it's hard not to get interference on your network. I used a wifi app to check which part of the spectrum was most open and changed the channel. It was better, but I still had problems at times, so I got a long ethernet cable and no longer have any problems.
If it's not a wifi issue you should contact optimum.
Actually taken from beneath the Manhattan Bridge, looking at the Brooklyn Bridge (look at windows to the right). Probably using a telephoto lens or similar to distort the range:
Eastern Parkway at Franklin Avenue!
Thanks for grink's comment below. It was actually a lot of help. Only thing left to verify is whether looking East/West.
Edit: I'm guessing West because it looks like Easter Parkway is sloping upward and from what I remember of that intersection going west is higher elevation.
I've been to Milan Optique and everyone there is really nice. They helped me find contacts that worked for me and were covered by my insurance. It looks like there's a Groupon for them now, too: https://www.groupon.com/biz/brooklyn/milan-optique
I was there, it was great! A little too hot but still an enjoyable walk among the book stands and I made off with 2 cookbooks, one by a local Chef The Good Fork by Sohui Kim (I missed her book signing because I walked the other way) and the other is Chow Chop Suey, Food and the Chinese American Journey by Anne Mendelson. Strange both about Asian cooking but I'm leaning that way lately. I also picked up On Writing Well by William Zinsser for 2 bucks so that's a steal and of course snagged a few freebies from the Poets and Writers Magazine Tent and a novel called Arms from the Sea by Rich Shapero as I was walking out. All in all a very good day but I really was hoping the Brooklyn Public Library table was having an amnesty day because I just found out I owe a couple of books and I have no idea where they are but sadly no they didn't. lol Hope you and everyone else had a good day as well.
Great recommendation. Cold Spring is easily reachable by Metro North, it has a nice and vibrant town center, the hikes ("Hudson Highlands") are 10 minutes walk from the station (they're marked on Google Maps, you can just follow them on your phone). You can see some pics here
If it's an iPhone and siri is enabled for the lock screen, you could ask her "whose phone is this?"
http://osxdaily.com/2015/01/23/found-iphone-see-owner-contact-info/
edit: apparently you can get the IMEI number off any phone and contact the carrier, who will then get in touch with the owner.

Try meetup.com! There are so many groups here in NYC, including ones that are age-range specific. I had to try a few different groups before I found one that felt right to me, but once I did it was great. I still go to meetups to meet new people, but I've now made close friends who I visit and make plans with outside of the official group.
This is horribly confusing. I'd heard about the shutdowns at Smith/9th, 15th St, and Fort Hamilton, but what does this mean?
> From late fall 2011 to spring 2012, expect no Coney Island-bound F or Church Avenue-bound G train service until fall 2012.
Does that mean no Coney Island bound service AT ALL, from ANYWHERE? Or from those stations? What the hell is this referring to?
i scraped the audio from the mic on the camera. edited because there are time gaps between screams. I woke up towards the very end. feel shitty. sound is as if a potato recorded it, but put headphones on. https://clyp.it/hv0ph1i3
Just use something like this. It'll take a while for a bigger drive but if the DoD trusts it... Plus it's free.
Honestly it's probably even more secure than physical destruction, or a third party. In theory you could lift those bits off the pieces of drive with high tech magnetic imaging technology; and what's to stop anybody you drop it off with from just imaging the drive, formatting and reselling it?
That's great, but it's not in your neighborhood. ie, https://maps.google.com/maps?client=safari&oe=UTF-8&ie=UTF-8&q=tio+pio+downtown+brooklyn&fb=1&gl=us&hq=tio+pio+downtown+brooklyn&hnear=tio+pio+downtown+brooklyn&cid=0,0,11822031229196211975&ei=pfkjUMmkOMHd0QGGs4...
You live in Belltel then I would guess. If you own a car I imagine it's ok, but most of nyc doesn't.
I kind of wish talks broke down the way they did for Citifield. Now I wonder if NYTimes pays the MTA to keep using "Times Square" instead of just "42nd street".
Hey! I can relate. My SO and I had to move here rather abruptly and we also needed an immediate place to stay. We used this website: https://www.airbnb.com/s/Brooklyn--New-York--NY and managed to find a basement 1 bedroom apartment. It was shitty, (the bathroom flooded every time the upstairs neighbors took a shower! ಠ_ಠ ) But at least it as a roof over our heads for a couple of weeks while we ended up having to hire a broker to find our permanent settlement.
What part of Brooklyn are you hoping to stay in? I can help you look for something. I can also pm you the name and phone # of our broker if you like.
I had a hard time finding apartments in NYC for a reasonable price and for a short time period. I looked on /r/NYCapartments, craigslist, padmapper and everything.
What worked best for me was https://www.airbnb.com/, it's mostly people renting out extra rooms in their homes, but what's awesome about this site is there are reviews from previous guests, photos and everything is upfront. Give it a try and good luck!
I order calamansi concentrate on Amazon Sun Tropics 100% Pure Calamansi Puree, 10 oz (3 Pack), Not From Concentrate, Citrus Juice https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HWGYVN2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_P46.Fb3XD1ER3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 highly recommend it!
Yep, sounds much like Mister Saturday Night. Probably at the venue House of Yes (http://maps.google.com/maps?um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=house+of+yes&fb=1&gl=us&hq=house+of+yes&hnear=0x89c24fa5d33f083b:0xc80b8f06e177fe62,New+York,+NY&cid=0,0,16125970755556051660&ei=AVukTrKpBKPe0QH14ojfBA&sa=X&oi=loc...)
Could also be the Let's Play House parties. They haven't had one in that area in some time, but they're always hopping around. https://www.facebook.com/letsplayhouse
That is Bed-Stuy, like Biggie Smalls Bed Stuy. They have great roti but you are also likely to get got in that part of Bed Stuy. It is close to the border of East New York, arguably the worst neighborhood in Brooklyn.
On the bright side, murder is down, only 7 so far in the first 4 months of the year.
Pick a higher income neighborhood and check it out beforehand during the day and at night. Make sure to make note of parking regulations beforehand as well. Buy some privacy shades and a windshield sunblocker.
Make sure to get up before the neighborhood does and get yourself ready for work elsewhere since you don't want the neighborhood to know that you're sleeping there.
Me: [from a dark corner] "Pssst. c'mere. I'll hold your stuff, $10, meet be back here at 7PM to pick it up."
Just get a waterproof, handsfree pouch or fanny pack and call it a day. I would test it first by putting some paper towels in there and sumberging it for a while.
If you want to put clothes and towel in a locker, that's fine, but I cannot stress enough how bad an idea it is to leave all your ID, phone and keys together protected by a $10 lock. If someone is watching the lockers and breaks in or something "happens", you have nothing. No way to get home via Uber or even on the train, no money, no way to get money, and unless you have people's numbers memorized, no way to contact anyone. No keys to get in your apartment and no way to reach a super.
Replacing all your cards without ID will be a nightmare and paying for a new ID when you have no way to access your money? Whomp whomp.
Fair warning that you may wanna make sure you get the most up-to-date versions of everything; some of the stuff in the Food Lovers Guide has since gone belly-up since I got my own copy.
Oh, another fun thing that isn't necessarily Brooklyn-centric!
The Subway Adventure Guide: To The End Of The Line is a good idea for a cheap-thrill exploring day. They go through every single subway line, and tell you what you'll find if you go all the way to the very last stop (at both ends) for each one. So, for instance, if you were to get on the 1 train going uptown and rode to the very last stop, you'd end up near Van Cortland Park, and it mentions some of the stuff you'll find in that park - and also tells you about a steak house and an Irish sports stadium in the area. Or, if you ride the 4 train uptown to the last stop, you end up at Woodlawn Cemetery, and there's also a Jamaican restaurant and an Irish butcher in the vicinity. They also tell you about one or two random things you can find at some of the other stops along the way on each line.
So you could make a day of it and pick the subway line nearest to you, ride it all the way in one direction, get out and explore, and then ride all the way back in the OPPOSITE direction to the other end and explore there, and when you're done the subway's right there for you to hop on and get home.
I tried this one and it wasn't for me. I couldn't get the soap/water measurement to feel right on the clothes (only used it for undies/socks etc) and doesn't dry. Just a FYI so you don't waste your time!
Since pepper spray is out of the question in a situation like this, close quarters with a dog, might I suggest you buy an air horn? It's really loud and good at startling people. It may scare your dog a lot, but it would probably throw her off her game should something happen in the future. Just keep setting it off.
Prevents anyone from wedging anything in the crack of the door. You might need a different one depending on what kind of door/lock.

Same man. I'm looking to do it all - roast, market, package, distribute, maybe grow one day, but right now I'm learning.

I can set one up today and send you an invite actually I'll shoot you a message in a bit
All, I'm a friend of Josh's too. Here's a video of him for a better idea of what he looks and sounds like. If you've seen him, please call the number on the poster.
I had a very similar problem and I ended up filling all gaps in the apartment with Pest Plug. It took a month or so to figure out all the places they were coming in, but by the end I could leave plastic baggies of rice and nuts on the floor and they were undisturbed. The only way mice could get into that apartment was through the front door.
Places to look include gaps around where the gas comes in for the stove, pipes under the sink, corners of cabinets, and shitty floor molding.
The cat would probably also be nice too. :)
This trap really works for me. Trap Link I use peanut butter with it and I catch any and all mice.
Strongly recommend electrical mouse traps. They can catch multiple mice or rats, humanely kill them quick, and can have rechargeable batteries so you can reuse them and save money.
You mention you're on the top floor and no one below you gets them, has your exterminator checked the roof? There might be a way they're getting in through there.
Have you closed drains/kept toilet closed? A bit insane but people see them swim up those all the time.
Tom Cat mousetrap, once you have done all other prep (sealed holes, all food in the fridge or in plastic or metal boxes, etc). I love these, I bait them with peanut butter. Just be prepared to open rhem to dispose of the mouse.
Looks like Bob has put together a 346-page study on re-opening it. Here's a direct link to the kickstarter (linked in the article) to put this study in the right hands.

You could come by Greenpoint and kick around in the McCarren skatepark. It's not huge, but during the week (at least during the school year) its not too busy and people are generally nice.
HA!!!!
https://www.quora.com/How-much-money-do-musicians-make-playing-in-NYC-subways
You know why I have no sympathy here? Because similar shit happened growing up in Queens with people who were begging and faking things. Here's one example from a couple of years ago: http://www.insideedition.com/investigative/3790-inside-edition-investigates-bogus-beggars
I feel the same thing applies to certain subway performers. Am I saying this about all of them? Hell no. But it happens and they make quite a bit more dough than you'd think.
From MTA's website:
Beginning 5 AM Mon, Jan 10 until May 2011 15 St-Prospect Park and Fort Hamilton Pkwy stations
> No Manhattan-bound F or Queens-bound G service > From these stations, take a Coney Island-bound G or Church Av-bound G train to Church Av and transfer to a Manhattan-bound F or Queens-bound G train. > To these stations, take a Manhattan-bound F or Queens-bound G to 7 Av and transfer to a Church Av-bound F or Coney Island-bound F train.
I'd recommend joining a bunch of the Brooklyn soccer groups on Meetup.com rather than doing Zog or one of them. They all keep getting more and more expensive to the point where you're paying like $20/game ($150+ for an 8-game season.) The most I've seen on Meetup is $7/game and you can pick and choose date/time/location.
Check Groupon, they almost always have discounted rates on stuff like this. Still not super cheap, but cheaper.
You guys need your own Google MyBusiness listing because I just tried to add you to my saved places list and only Juno is there. Just go here: https://www.google.com/business/ and do the thing. You can put in your hours, your menu, everything.
I look at my bill and most of it was for ConEd to deliver my electricity. It wasn't for electricity it was to deliver it.
And does that money go to fixing the grid?

Mr. Avoy owns over 75 units of Consolidated Edison stock worth over $10,164,011 and over the last 7 years he sold ED stock worth over $24,608. In addition, he makes $15,345,300 as Chairman of the Board, President, and Chief Executive Officer at Consolidated Edison.
Lea on Cortelyou is one of my favorites for dates. Can get crowded at times (pre-covid).
Not sure if this is too late. If you've never used Uber before, you get a free $20 off your first trip. (And I get a free $20 too if you use this link: https://uber.com/invite/8l4qt) As long as it isn't a crazy busy night or there's horrible weather, it's always cheaper than car service in my experience.
I did a year abroad in Spain and then Italy during college and did this tandem program (although it was through the university and not this website). Basically they pair a native Italian speaker who wants to learn English with a native English speaker who wants to learn Italian. You meet up for an hour or so and speak only in English for half the time and only Italian for the second half.
Lovely reel! Welcome to Brooklyn. Have you heard of Animoto? I think they are new, but they probably would love to have some of your talent in their network. They reached out to me about being a subject in a promo video.
Look it up on YouTube, it's actually not that hard. You literally just shove the wires into the sides of the car. The panels all lift up pretty easily. Now if you want a more integrated system where it's hooked up to the car battery, than you're going to need a expert.
I have this one: Mirror Dash Cam Sony IMX Sensor Dash Camera for Cars, Backup Camera with Night Vision Full Laminated and Anti-Glare Display, 1080P Dual Dash Cam with Streaming Media (BOSCAM R2) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0814M47K8/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_WQZD2NEC46G3AP6MSCVD?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
No complaints, does the job for me.
It worked for me. Get an 6.00 Outlet Voltage Tester to make sure the plug adapter is grounded correctly. You might have to flip the 2 prong adapter upside down to get the correct polarity. The black wire (Hot) and white wire (Neutral) might have been installed wrong in the 2 prong outlet. When you screw in the ground wire to the faceplate, the plug adapter becomes grounded if the wall outlet makes contact with the metal junction box that contacts a metal tube around the 2 wires leading back to the breaker / fuse box.
Example = Klein Tools RT110 Receptacle Tester = 6.00 / Amazon
When I first moved here, I checked this book out from the library and explored some of the more well-known and lesser-known neighborhoods and it was a good way to get my bearings and always see whats out there - so much history around you that you won't see on first glance.
Meet-up groups around hobbies or interests, as many have said, is probably the easiest and most sure way to make new friends, unless you have a fun group of coworkers. I find it easy and convenient to chat with my neighbors in my building, too, and have made some of my closest friends that way.
just one example is this book

Funny, this is the second time i'm replying to a similar post in a year's time with the same offer.
I have an iWalk that I need to get rid of because it is just taking up space. Way better than crutches in my opinion.
Happy to say I'm all better now and am going to avoid breaking my foot/leg a third time at all costs.
Let me know what part of Brooklyn you're in and if it is within a reasonable distance it is yours (or if you can send someone to get it for you since I'm guessing walking to meet me isn't a good option for you).
Blind guess but Enfamil is more than likely the expensive one your family member needs.
If it is https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07964CLR5 it's on sale on amazon right now (see the 35% coupon) assuming that's the one they need
Please note: it could be that tire pressure sensor (there is one in each tire) battery went bad. In this case you will need to replace it or just get a gauge that works (I have this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DL6T2YK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 PLEASE NOTE: it will NOT keep the reading after you disconnect it from the tire, there is a different model that does that) and ignore the warning.
As others suggested, it is best to visit tire shop. They can check all that.
But whatever you do: IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE THE SAME PRESSURE IN ALL TIRES! Especially in winter. I mean it will never be exactly the same but within 2-3 PSI
Buy one of those little cheap alarm things where it's 2 pieces, one goes on the window/door and one goes on the frame, battery operated. Once armed if the window/door opens it sets off an ear piercing alarm Something like this
I am not terribly far from Coney Island across from the south side of prospect park with very a very narrow line of sight over/through buildings towards Manhattan on the 6th floor (so between the elevation and building height arguably a good position) and after extensive research I bought one of these. I get pretty much every channel available in a 50 mile radius. But as others said you really wont know what your going to get till you try it. From my research it seemed as if this antenna works especially good in NYC. Not sure if it really matters or not about the type or brand but this is the only one I ever tested and it works very well. A powered 'booster' comes with it, but I never had to use it. If you are looking for DVR functionality also look into Tablo and HD Homerun. As another poster said, tfvool is a good resource for figuring out where to place the antenna to get the best line of sight.
I get nearly 35 channels in Bay Ridge. Get a decent antennae and point it at the empire state. You should definitely get all the networks and PBS from Coney.
I got this https://www.amazon.com/ClearStream-Indoor-Outdoor-Antenna-Mount/dp/B007RH5GZI
You're not too far away so should work for you. Just check first.
I was in a similar spot, then I bought Starting Strength and went and saw Paulie at South Brooklyn Weightlifting Club.
I can also get myself the yellow ones and stay safe from moving vehicles with how bright they are. :)
This is a huge help. I've never EVER owned rain boots in my life. Being from Texas, it's like a thing we don't even understand.
The Ordinary Seaman is one of my favorite books. It is about Red Hook in the 1980s -- not quite Cobble Hill/Caroll Gardens, but close.
