I use Öffi, the interface is less cluttered than the BVG app, and uses the same data source. It starts quickly and does the job very well. Also works in other areas in Germany/Europe, but you have to switch manually.
I'm a huge fan of Komoot. It's a crowdsourced platform for planning and finding hiking/cycling/mountain climbing routes. You can download offline maps that work with GPS, which is really helpful when you lose the signal in the middle of the hike ^_^;. You can also record your route, store photos of highlights along the way - and see the routes/photos other people posted. I've used it here in Berlin, in Sächsische Schweiz & around the Harz Mountains.
The first offline region is free (e.g. Berlin-Brandenburg), and you pay extra for every additional map. I highly recommend the World map though - it's a one time payment and you can use it anywhere you go.
One last thing that might be interesting - if you don't have a car, S-Bahn Berlin posted their own collection of routes that are reachable via S-Bahn.
You can also visit Krumme Straße at the corner of Schillerstraße in Charlottenburg, close to Deutsche Oper, where Benno Ohnesorg was shot during the Shah protests (there is a plaque) or go to Rudi Dutschke Straße, corner Axel Springer Straße and be amused by the fact that Rudi Dutschke Straße has the right of way over Axel Springer Straße (the intersection is controlled by traffic lights but in case they fail the regular signs are to be obeyed).
>I just moved to Berlin into a new place where I cannot do the anmeldung, as my new employer told me that wasn't important for him.
What?
>Unfortunately he just told me yesterday that I need to have a tax id number, for which I need to do the anmeldung anyway, which I wasn't aware of...
See!
>I'm open to any suggestion... is risky in case I decide to register anyway?
Registration without a signed Wohnungsgeberbestätigung is not possible.
>I know of people who did it like this and nothing happened. What kind of fine can I get?
"The law requires that tenants must register within two weeks. Who is liable if a tenant does not do this?
The registration law requires that the tenant submits the certificate to the municipality. So he is liable. If the landlord refuses to issue a confirmation, the tenant must report this to the authorities immediately. The registration office then writes to the landlord. This is usually enough for the landlord to take action.
What penalties does the law provide for?
Tenants face a fine of 1000 euros if they do not comply with the requirement. The maximum fine of 50,000 euros is only imposed if a landlord issues a confirmation of accommodation even though the person reporting does not live there or in cases where data is misused."

Number26 is a new player focused on the younger/online generation. Free MasterCard, 3 free withdrawals per month from any ATM (and always-free withdrawals at over 7000 grocery stores and shops) and a big plus is instant(!) notification to your mobile for any transactions. And you can deposit cash at those 7000 locations as well (<100€ = free, above that a 1.50% fee applies). And their card looks rad.
I am an it guy and agree 100% with your comment.
I would like to add that it is very difficult to cancel internet services and very easy and cheap to get it. The providers love to charge their monthly fees. Which is why they don't want you to cancel and get out. One call to Telekom could revert the cancelation. They want your business. Often times they will offer you an upgrade or a discount (like paying €5 a month less) to get you to stay on and take back the cancellation.
On top of that it is highly unlikely that the internet is actually canceled. All Telekom internet offers I know are either 12 or, more likely 24 month long. Which means there is only one cancellation date every 24 month. You can only cancel if you cancel three month in advance. Maybe they canceled right at the beginning? Either way you need to send a signed letter or fax. It is impossible to cancel via email or telephone.
To see what's up, your host family simply needs to take the last bill they were sent and copy the customer number. If they can't find it, your telephone number might be enough. Then call up Telekom customer support. It is free.
To me, this sounds like a giant misunderstanding. Your host family doesn't know much about the internet and in Germany we have an industy of lawyers that is ripping off internet users that are not tech and law savy using varous methods. Which creates fear and distrust.
You should be able to use the internet at your home. You should not download anything. And maybe sign up for CyberGhost VPN or a similar service.
> Google Translate can get you 80% of the way there, and all you need to do is handle the visit by yourself.
Pro tip: use https://www.deepl.com/translator, it's astonishingly better than any other translator to the point that even complex legal documents can be translated quite accurately.
As someone who has learnt and taught german I strongly recommend following a grammatics book. Something like "Menschen" can be really good. I especcially enjoyed working with this collection (you can also get them online for free):

Dealing with abandoned bikes is the Ordnungsamt's mission. Download their app and report the incident, and they'll take it from here.
> Or is there any period of time after which one can claim something which has not been used?
With something like a bike chained to a post, no. Had you found an item just lying on the street, you would be forced to hand it over to the Fundbüro, and then, if nobody claims it after six months, you could keep it for now (but still have to to give it up if the owner eventually shows up and asks for it back.)
That’s the updated Street View model with updated cameras and fixed with 2 LIDAR sensors for 3D imaging.
Official site says they’re driving around Berlin until November.
There's also codeacademy.com, a pretty interactive tutorial website for most code languages.
It's free, so it's worth a try. It helped me to stock up on my PHP and JS knowledge.
Cough up their logs to whom? This isn't the U.S. Datenschutz is a big deal.
"Informationelle Selbstbestimmung" is a fundamental right. It's completely a German concept, but there's an English wikipedia article on it:
There's other privacy laws as well, including some EU regulations on the matter. Your ISP isn't going to be able to reveal anything about you without a court order, and you can generally ask them to provide you with all the information they know about you.
If you're worried about things where someone might be interested in pursuing you through legal channels (say, sharing files via torrents), use Tor or a VPN service. I like StrongVPN, but use it just for Netflix and Hulu.
Yes, the App is a great idea. I highly recommend Öffi for Android - don't know what's popular for iPhone currently.
All the apps use the official info from the BVG anyway, so you'll know when something is going on there.
If you're still in Berlin download the app Jodel https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tellm.android.app&hl=de (also available for iPhone) its localized so you'll only see posts from Berlin on there (for example I'm not in Berlin right now but another city, so I only see posts from the city where I am at right now)
it is at the moment very popular with students and young people, post your story on there with how to connect you (I think only anonymously i.e. eMail, KIK, Reddit, because if you give out a phone number thats a bannable offence) anyways, it might spread further than if you only post it here on reddit.
(I'm not in Berlin atm else I would do it for you obviously, if you aren't on there anymore I'm sure someone from r/Berlin might be willing to do it or is already doing it)
Use Check24 or Preisvergleich or so to compare electricity and internet.
If you can, get cable internet, or VDSL. Many parts of the city are very underdeveloped and only allow for super unstable and slow DSL connections. In general, Berlin has really shitty and expensive internet connections compared to most other european cities. Most get you locked in for two years, in which you pay something like 19,90-24,90€/month the first year, and the second year you'll pay something like 29,90 or 34,90. I have a friend paying 24,90€ for 3Mbps download... No comments... It's hard to recommend a company, in many areas you only have 1 or 2 to chose from anyway.
At all costs, avoid O2! This autumn they will start sending out warning letters to customers using "too much" bandwidth (could be watching Youtube or whatever). Even if you pay for it, they will throttle your connection (say from 24Mbps to 2Mbps). You still have to pay for the 24Mbps. I can't believe this company still exists. Info in English here. Even if you know you will use very little data per month, consider boycotting O2 anyway to show them they are taking the wrong path.
I would recommend avoiding Vattenfall for electricity, they are corrupt assholes (facing a partial shut-out from Berlin due to a public uproar against them leading to a referendum last year). You can get 100% renewable "green" energy for a cheaper price per kWh anyway. Grünwelt is one example, but there are many others.
It's using some pre-determined rate as promised by German government
This is the underlying calculator.
Been looking for more mini bike tours do with my friends, and among the many B.S. tripadvisor lists, I did find this one from Komoot. I guess they're an app, I don't use it, but their list of local bike tours looks nice.
Grunewald is kinda my default bike trip. Never goes wrong, and the woods have alot of hard-gravel/packed-dirt trails so you can take your regular bike in and it'll be fine.
I always use songkick to check for concerts: http://www.songkick.com/metro_areas/28443-germany-berlin?utf8=%E2%9C%93&filters%5BminDate%5D=02%2F10%2F2014&filters%5BmaxDate%5D=02%2F14%2F2014 Hope this helps :)
Any app that uses OpenStreetMap data. OSMand is one of them, BBBike and Komoot also use OSM data I believe.
Open Street Maps lives by its contributions. You can correct street quality within the app if you find something not matching reality.

It's really easy to keep to your apartment no hotter than outside with fans alone. Buy a decent fan (or two) and set it up in your window. By "a decent fan" I mean something like this or this, not the same kind of thing you point at yourself to enjoy the wind. If you get a decent fan, and put it in your window facing out, it will suck cool air in from the rest of your windows and keep your apartment the temperature of outside. If that doesn't do the job, add a second fan in the window, facing inward to keep cool outdoor air flowing through your apartment. That's should work for 90% of Berlin's summer. There are only a handful of days a year you'll really need AC here when the outdoor temperature is dangerously high.
A month ago u/withu told me about the Ordnungsamt App.
Some neighbors like to pile trash in front of the Building. Normally it stays there for weeks... After trying the app the trash was gone in 1 day. Thanks!
don't forget to report the Spermüll with the Ordnungsamt App.
It takes a while for them to pick it up ( usually around 2 weeks) but it works and they let you know when they do it.
Not fiction but documentary photography this book gives a nice insight into the East-Berlin fashion, punk and what not szene in Prenzlauer Berg.
Yes, like Öffi (Android), which has a widget that shows you the next departures of the nearest of your chosen stations.
They had some Windows apps but I cannot find them on their site and I don't remember if they were real time or just a better timetable app.
I may be wrong, but I hold out little hope of free services actually working these days. Also, as with anything free, YOU are the product and not the other way round. They could do anything with your bandwidth/connection. Remember, the service may be free for you, but they are not providing it for free. Someone is getting something.
As for paid services, and once again I may be (and would even LOVE to be proven) wrong, but you really get what you pay for. I used PIA at first, then Netflix cracked down and they outright said tough shit. AirVPN were next and worked for ages until a BBC iPlayer crackdown happened and they also just said deal with it.
I heard strongvpn were great, but the checkout system raised some red flags, then I did a few trials of more unknown and expensive ones. Long story short, NORDVPN seem to get through everything, but they cripple Netflix bandwidth for some reason. Then I ended up on expressvpn. It's great, I'm happy, but easily the most expensive one I tried.
Do a bunch of trials and see what suits you, but drop any expectations of a free/cheap lunch.
Illegally downloading content and broadcasting your IP while doing so is what gets you caught. Streaming doesn't get you caught because the Abmahnung mafia can't access the streaming websites' logs. Torrent downloaders are publicly visible.
A VPN solves this problem. I've been downloading movies on a Private Internet Access VPN for 2 years without issues. Just make sure you have a good killswitch if the VPN disconnects.
The BVG app can do routing and allows you to buy tickets in app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.eos.uptrade.android.fahrinfo.berlin
Like others said, you can also just use Öffi or even google maps to do the navigation and buy the tickets in the station.
If you plan to use it a lot, you probably are best off buying day tickets or even a week pass: https://shop.bvg.de/index.php/tickets
These tickets are working in all forms of transport: Bus, underground, tram and regional trains.
There are several (for example) but unless you've got a very high budget you're going to need to be SUPER lucky to find a place in a month.
I made an (Android) app in my spare time last year called Berlin's Best Coffee, should help you out. I'll be updating it with plenty more soon but it's got quite a few choices at the moment.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.adamapps.berlincoffee
I wouldn't say "easily below -20°C" - maybe once a winter. The only list I could find was this one(ok, that's not a very credible source): http://www.bz-berlin.de/archiv/die-kaeltesten-temperaturen-der-letzten-10-jahre-article137101.html
And -30°C? Are you sure? At least Wolfram Alpha says the coldest temperature of the last 50 years was in 2010 with -24°C.
Virtual is free, real debit MC is €4.90/month. Pricing page.
The only free credit card is offered by DKB as far as I know (there are reports that they plan to abolish it). While "free" debit is available in Revolut (with €9 delivery fee). Everyone else offers a Girocard (EC) in their "free" plans where it's required to deposit €500-1000/month i.e. use the account for salary.
I recently stayed in this one!
The M10 train stops right out front, and will take you to the main sightseeing areas quickly and easily.
You can walk to the Boxhagener Platz market where there is a different market every day: food, flea, flower, etc.
There is a wonderful cafe down the street called Frau Honig.
The Friedrichshain area is awesome.
Check out the Wochenmarkt am Maybachufer on Saturday.
Lots of clothes, hippy stuff, a really cool boot/shoemaker and, of course, a hat stand or two.
(It's open on Tuesday and Friday too, but just for fresh produce, meat and breads.)
Awesome, thanks for that - I hadn't thought about booking from the other side. It would just be a single journey from Berlin-Warsaw as we will be flying home from Warsaw to Ireland.
I've been able to use the website to locate the times, but there doesn't seem to be any mention of prices of any way to book the trains. Is there something I'm missing? https://vgy.me/BRm9CQ.png
Cheers!
According to their website on their Maestro card, it's not a Girocard (EC card). They have this to say:
Hey Marcel, dies liegt oftmals daran, dass es sich bei unserer Karte nicht um eine Girocard (veraltet: EC-Karte) handelt und mit dieser nur da gezahlt werden kann, wo explizit Maestro angenommen wird. Eine Girocard ist unsererseits nicht geplant. Grüße, Dani von N26
> include credit cards
Debit cards, not credit, as far as I know: https://n26.com/mastercard/
If you don't need a real bank (staying here just for a year you probably don't), N26 is a great choice - easy to open and foreigner friendly.
https://n26.com/fair-use-policy-germany/
They also sneaked in a €10 charge for replacing a card set to come in on the same date. Cash26 is still free though but I will probably be using my comdirect card for cash withdrawals now.
Probably a bit better than randomly shutting down peoples accounts but still a pain anyway
The best way to transfer USD to EUR is via Wise (née TransferWise), but I’m not sure how to get cash to them. Check their website and if it’s not obvious, email them. I’ve always found their support great.
That's what I use mine for. I'll pack lunch, take the train and explore trails in Brandenburg. Last week I was on this leg of the 66-Seen-Wanderweg. It handled those bumpy trails just fine.
It's an all-purpose bike. It's not the fastest nor the lightest, but it will never dictate where you can and can't go. I'd rather pedal a little more than to turn around at the sight of dirt. If I didn't want to sweat or leave paved roads, I'd take my motorcycle.
I was looking at the Ortler Gotland as an upgrade/replacement for mine. I tried it at Fahrrad.de in Charlottenburg, and it was 550€. Hub gear, hub dynamo, non-hydraulic disk brakes, mud guards, good riding position, and slightly lighter. I decided to rejuvenate mine instead, but it was a solid contender.
Yeah, that's a nice route, the buildings in some of those streets are beautiful and there are good bars and restaurants in that area.
Al-Kalif is super cozy and serves delicious food (get the cinammon tea!), abeit rather slowly.
should be no problem at all. You can find rental bikes allmost everywhere for a few Euros per day.
If you are here for longer i recommend going to Mauerpark on sunday morning (just a few hunderd meters up Danziger Straße from where you live) and buy a used bike. If you get there early you will find a decent bike for 40 - 50 Euro.
I did just that with a visiting friend from New Zealand las sunday.
edit to clarify concerning rental: I have no place in mind...but just asking google gives you this. and there should be more...just keep your eyes open for a group of the same bikes parked on the sidewalk in front of shop ;)
Apple Maps on macOS using Flyover. It (and Look Around) are Apple’s best features on Maps. I find it fun to fly around places I am about to visit, most European cities are all 3D scanned.
https://www.apple.com/ios/feature-availability/#maps-flyover
Due to the limitations of the technology 5G might not be that much faster than 4G, since best speeds are only achieved within LoS of an antenna, that's a bit difficult in a build up area and the rang is quite short to begin with.
You could use the flight radar 24 app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.flightradar24free
They show all of the commercial planes and helicopters. Sometimes military and police too, if not in service but on a transfer flight.
It's fun to see a plane in the sky and look it up where ist comes from and where it goes to.
I would suggest

I don't know for Berlin, but this seems to be a much more popular toilets location app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=sfcapital.publictoiletinsouthaustralia&rdid=sfcapital.publictoiletinsouthaustralia
GooseVPN has a free trial for a month and it works really well with it's apps on most platforms and also OPENPVPN protocol. It's unfortunately hosted in one of 14 eyes states, so the authorities may get hold of your activity if they feel the need to, but this most certainly won't happen only because you are filesharing.
For some more security take a look at NordVPN and ProtonVPN. NordVPN is hosted somewhere in Panama and ProtonVPN is reliably hosted in Switzerland by the makers ProtonMail (encrypted email account), so they also know what they are doing. :)
BTW, is there a decent taxi app to use in Berlin? how about Taxi Berlin or mytaxi ?
I prefer Rain Alarm since MeteoGroup seemed a little greedy when they switched from pay-once-"Pro" version to their subscription model a few years ago.
we dont have uber since we only use legal cabs taxi app, with wifi
edit: you need wifi to use the app but it got numbers saved incase you wanna call, you can pay cash in all cabs
Lad dir doch die App runter, kannst mit Kreditkarte oder Lastschrift bezahlen und brauchst überhaupt kein nerviges Papier mehr.

it is easy to point fingers at such NIMBYs, but your claim that they play a major role in rising rents seems highly questionable to me. is there any data that shows a correlation between skyrocketing rents and a surge of those NIMBYs? that would be a start. though how you would then infer causality is completely unclear to me.
your posts wants to answer the question why rents are rising. in volume one you produced one example of a (unsuccessful!) NIMBY. volume 2 is, it seems, going to tackle yet another NIMBY. while i do not know how many more volumes, each containing a single example of a NIMBY with no analysis of their actual impact on increasing rents, you plan to release, i do remain hopeful that you will find the time, maybe towards one of the later chapters, to talk about such things as financialisation, which, you know, could play some minor role in rising rents.

Generation Rent: Why You Can't Buy A Home (Or Even Rent A Good One) by Chloe Timperley
It's a bit late, but for the future I can recommend using a VPN as a standard thing. I run all my traffic through Mullvad VPN, which costs only 5€/month, and very solid. Unlike some of the other more famous VPN offerings, it's owners aren't associated with malware, and their software is independently vetted for privacy.

Buy a washer and do it yourself!
Cost like 100€ and you can actually use it more often.
I am using this one right here:

But I now realize that prices increased a lot! I bought it for 110€...
If you find a site where you can rent a MacBook with German Layout you can buy a cover for the keyboard with English layout Amazon I got one months ago it fits well but didn’t really use it a lot. Don’t know if his helps but thought this could be a temporary solution if it is really urgent
Here's the one I got for my balcony doors, and here's what I got for the windows. Both have been working well. I got them from Amazon because they often have the best selection if you want something unusual. Cutting the screens for the windows down to the correct size wasn't that easy, but they're very sturdy.
Artery clogging... Co**aine equivalent. German copy of Snyder of Hannover. (You can also find snyder of hannover in Penny)

Regular, too thin, sharp cord can and will damage tress. That's why there are special tree straps for hammocks
For example this: https://www.amazon.de/Sea-Summit-Hammock-Tree-Protector/dp/B01LXCI3CS
I have a suggestion what to carry if you plan to join those demonstrations:
Quick but only semi-related question, since I don't know where else to ask.
I have this foldable baby bed/playpen with attachable diaper changing surface, same brand but slighly different (gender-neutral) colors. It's two years old and in good condition; my kids don't need it anymore.
Would this be a useful thing to bring to the Hauptbahnhof as a donation? It's a little heavy at just over 9kg and we unfortunately don't still have the box or the written directions to fold/unfold it. I don't want to clog the space if it's not going to be useful.
Thanks in advance for your help.
As an immigrant to Germany myself, I can confirm that her experience is pretty accurate actually. While the intensity might vary from place to place, living here as a BPOC can be terrifying especially as a kid. I suggest you a book by, Mohamed Amjahid Unter Weißen: Was es heißt, privilegiert zu sein. He was born in Frankfurt to immigrant parents and grew up to face a lot of the discrimination that your friend is describing.
>Favorit Gemüse Kebab
I see, found it on OSM: https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/4626413458
it's not in the Döner Map because it is not tagged as a kebab shop, but we can fix that! Maybe we should include places that have "Döner" or "Kebab/Kebap" in their name :)
Can you tell me which kind of sauces they serve there? Would love to add that detail while I'm at it.
there's a place here
> Very little shared experience and largely you try to engage in convo and you get stared at for the sudden wave of insecurity that apparently you've inspired.
I feel this so much. Good luck trying to talk to anyone about air conditioners here. You can find me in the frozen foods section in Lidl in the summer.
> 'try to remember what they had said in the last chat and try to form a picture of what they are interested in uniting the past and present to have a conversation which is relevant to them' lol https://www.amazon.com/Doing-Business-Germans-Their-Perception/dp/3525461674
lol, that's fascinating though. I always had the feeling that culture shock here tends to hit a bit harder than in neighboring European countries.
PCI compliance is not mandatory in the EU and afaik GDPR doesn’t specifically cover payment data, but any serious company processing payments will be PCI compliant nowadays, mostly by using payment providers such as Stripe. They have a good guide about it: https://stripe.com/en-de/guides/pci-compliance
Get yourself a Komoot Account, it has plenty of suggestions, and also lets you plan your hiking trip.
And if you find a path is not what Komoot promises, please update it in OpenStreetMap.

Eh, if you ignore the yellow press, it's one of the worst you can buy here if I'm being honest. Very sloppy quality control in my experience. But locally, only Tagesspiegel and taz have some quality (plus Morgenpost specifically for their data visualizations, otherwise it's crap). There are some good non-local papers you can buy here as well, but of course most of them are either in German or not from Germany.
Anyway, Berliner Zeitung is the only one in English of note since the Berlin paper doesn't exist anymore, so you can either read that one (and take everything you read with a grain of salt), learn some German, or, as you're probably reading online anyway, make very liberal use of DeepL, which I would personally recommend.
From all those certificates and marketing blah blah, the only really interesting thing about MY money would be:
> If you are a US resident, your USD balances are covered by FDIC insurance, up to US$250,000.
And I'm not a US resident. So that's that.
Also an interesting read on trustpilot:
> Then it happened. A maintenance for the app and exchange was announced on the 3rd of August. Nothing special, these things have to be done now and then. But a lot of early investors woke up and couldn't believe their eyes. A token swap was almost forced upon them. The MCO token would become useless and you would need CRO to stake for the card. But the only problem was the terrible conversion rate. 1 MCO for 27 CRO. And a 20% bonus locked on the exchange for 6 months if you swapped before September(what now they can give free CRO after all???). (end rate 1:33) > > So what is so bad about this, and I've noticed that this is really hard to understand for some people is this. If you had a market share of 1% in MCO then you now had 1/6000 of a market share in CRO. > > How did they justify this? They based it on a dollar value of the coins at the last couple of days. Yes the last days when they let MCO die in a ditch and promoted the sh*'t out of CRO. A couple of months ago MCO/CRO would be 100. So yes this was the perfect timing for them.
I don't speak German (yet) buddy, but if I understood the question..well I was referring specifically to the events listed in meetup.com - events on this platform are usually called "meetups"
