I have read past cases where the app would start crashing after update in Bluestacks. The fact you were playing when the update occurred did not help. Usually fixed by clean install of the app. Try the following:

Are you on Android?
If so, go into your file manager and check the following directory: Android/data/com.bethsoft.falloutshelter/files.
In that directory, scroll down and look for file labeled Vault#.sav where # is 1, 2, or 3 depending on which slot your vault was in. If the save file is still there, download and install Robot9706's save editor app. It is probable that your save file became corrupted in the crash which is why it is not showing in the list. Robot's save editor has several features for fixing corrupted save files which might help.
If your save file is gone or too corrupted to recover, you can use the save editor to modify a new vault to have resources, dwellers, weapons/outfits/pets, junk, etc close to what your old vault had (or as best as you can remember).
How ever things end up for you, what happened is a perfect example of why I recommend everyone to keep local backups of their vaults and not to rely on the Cloud setting for backup. Robot's save editor app has a good backup feature as well, or you could use Zara's backup app.

This one. It's a legitimate app from Google that gives you Play Store credit good for a year for answering short surveys. Personally, I've seen an average of 1 survey a day the past couple years. I have earned a total of $64.60 in 2015 alone from that. I'd have to add up the numbers manually to figure out how much i earned in the past 365 days but I know I spent somewhere around $100 on lunchboxes. I'd been saving it up since buying most of the games I'm interested in (XCOM, etc). To support a company like Bethesda doing something like this game as a freebie, promotional or not, I feel that's well spent.
Now before anyone gets pissy about this, I do not get a kickback or credit if folks sign up. There's no referral bonus or anything; the link above is simply copied from my browser. I know some other such programs exist, some of which even pay out. This isn't one of those sorts of things. Obviously, depending on what you do and who you are, you may see less or even more surveys than I do. Once they figured out I am a business owner, I started seeing a fair amount. Friends I know see maybe half as many surveys as I do. Still, for a few seconds answering questions, I figure it's worth it. It certainly pays for all my mobile app needs, that's for sure! I ran out of things to buy a year or more ago ... right up until Bethesda announced this game. :D
I pulled out my SGS2 running 4.4.4, and yeah, it says incompatible. Even when I installed Market Helper, and tried to load remotely from a webpage, it still wouldn't work. I think the only thing to do is sideload from an APK.
Luckily for you, I have a SGS3 that does load FOShelter from the market. I was able to back up the apk with TitaniumBackup, install the apk onto my SGS2, and at least verify that the game does run on my SGS2, though I didn't get beyond building a room and assigning some dwellers in my testing.

The only way to undo an eviction is if you have been making local backups of your vault (which you should definitely do for multiple reasons) and restore your most recent one.
Alternatively if you have not already been keeping backups, you can use Robot9706's save editor app for Android to recreate the dweller (including name, stats, HP, weapon, outfit, and pet).
Going forward you can make local backups, either manually if on iOS or if on Android there is both Zara's backup app (in Google Play Store) and Robot9706's save editor app (which has a backup feature).
no idea about downloading the bluestacks executable to your phone, but if you have windows 7/8/10, Andy is an alternative android emulator [which doesn't insist you 'try' sponsored apps to continue using it]

Because you put a '#' at the start of the line. You have to escape it like '\#' if you don't want it to turn the line into a header

I've moved vault files back and forth on my android phone several times by simply manipulating the number in the filename, it worked fine for me. As always, take backups.
Just change the filename from Vault1.sav to Vault2.sav and it should be moved. I normally use AirDroid for this.
I will give you my point of view on this subject, since i've experienced 3 vaults losses and came back anyway.
The main worry will be the device you play on and the safety measures you take : The 3 vault i lost were on a low price phone and the vault data seemingly went wrong due to one of the many crashes I had to endure.
I now play on a Galaxy A5 from 2015, and it goes really better.
There's an app called fallout shelter backup on Android (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=br.com.genial.falloutshelterbackup&hl=fr) which I use, maybe you can find something similar on the App Store : With a backup every day you should not have to face a vault loss. There is also a cloud save option directly in the game.
Upon /u/MinisterofEtc's suggestion, I grabbed this tool from the Nexus and extracted the sounds myself from Fallout 3.

Completed my save file. For legendary dwellers, it's missing Abraham, Allistair, Cross, Eulogy, and Preston. I got bored opening lunchboxes and I only really wanted Preston and Cross from the missing list anyway. Also several legendary weapons, some +5/+7 endurance armors, no extra money or resources. No handy's. I accidentally did a few of the starting achievements, maybe three or so. Only unlocked the Medbay (had 14 people max).
I opened up more than a thousand boxes over 6 days, removing excess dwellers and items. I built/destroyed buildings to get rid of the extra money. I let the save run on Bluestacks for about 18 hours getting rid of the resources.
Instead of using a VM in VMware or VirtualBox, you could try with Wineskin.
It's sad to see that Bethesda didn't port FOS on OS X/macOS and Linux. I hope they will one day.
After all, it's not like if porting an iOS game to OS X was the hardest thing ever.
While I haven't used it specifically for this (I use it for lots of other things), Syncthing could do the trick for you. It's a sync client that is open source. You can set up any folder on a machine and join other machines to it and they will all stay in sync.
It can be set to ignore files in the folder and it has a versioning system you can turn on that would essentially do backups for you. Again I haven't used it for Fallout Shelter but it might be worth a shot. Check out the Getting Started guide.

I can't be sure, maybe some people with 1GB RAM + KitKat (or above) devices could say if it works on theirs, but since 1.5 I found the game way heavier to load and play than before. With 2GB RAM on mine, everything else that tries to run while playing (i.e. a phone call) is mostly unresponsive.
Unfortunately it could be the case the phone can't handle it, since KitKat and above is when Google decided to clog every Android device hardware with sh*t resource hungry architecture.
One thing you could try is to clean Cache and all Data in Settings > Apps > Fallout Shelter, then try to run it again - it could be some conflicting leftovers from previous version but I honestly doubt it. (If you're going to try this, first backup your Vaults with Backup for Fallout Shelter so you can restore them later again).
Exactly! I had to buy a new replacement phone recently - low budget but very good for its price, an Asus Laser 2 @ 1.2Ghz and 2GB RAM. Almost 2 months ago, and the game was actually pretty fine, very fast, as you described. I stopped playing because it was taking so much of my life - heh - but then when I saw this update I went to try it out. Ouch - the loading so much slower, those audio glitches and - as you precisely pointed - the unusual but maybe 10-20% crash rate when transitioning between loadings.
Kinda expected, seems almost like a philosophical way of life by Bethesda, to release crippled games that are slowly healed through months..
For myself, I've been dealing with those issues with:
Muted sound: I just activate Airplane Mode straight up - not if I need the notifications for some specific reason, but mostly not, when I'm going to play for a bit. That cuts off 95% of any possible notifications for me.
Occasional crashes and objectives resetting: For both I started using the simplest but most fantastic tool: Backup for Fallout Shelter. I put its icon besides the game's, so every time I exit the game I create a new backup. If at any time I have a huge loss by crashing or objectives resetting I restore it.
I have never personally experienced this particular bug, or even heard of it before. My first instinct is that there is something corrupted either in your game itself or individual vault save file. Have you tried to see if the problem also occurs in a different vault save?
My suggestion would be to first backup your vault save file. If on Android, either Zara's backup app or Robot9706's save editor with backup feature make this very easy. After making backups, completely uninstall the FOS app. Redownload and install it from the appropriate app store. Finally import your save file back into the game.
That should fix any corruption in the game itself. If the problem persists, the issue is with your particular save file. You can try using a save editor to rummage around. You could also create a brand new vault and then use the save editor to give it all the same dwellers, resources, items, junk, etc as the first vault (can be time consuming for larger vaults).
Glad you were able to recover it from the in-game "Cloud" setting.
As a cautionary warning though, some folks have been unable to even recover their missing/corrupted vaults from the cloud. That is why I recommend every player not rely only on the "Cloud" setting, but to also keep local backups. For Android, both Zara's backup app and Robot9706's save editor with backup feature are very good.
For using the Cloud setting, once you create the vault you can later go into the vault loading screen where your 3 save slots are displayed and just check the Cloud option.
If the local save's datestamp does not match the Cloud's datestamp for a particular save slot, you will get a popup asking which one you want to load/keep. Also if you have multiple devices, you should be able to check the Cloud box on an empty save slot on 2nd device to load the corresponding vault. For example, on your smartphone you create a vault in save slot 1 and check the Cloud box for that save. On your tablet or PC, you could then go into the load screen and check the Cloud box next to save slot 1 to load the vault you created on your smartphone.
Using the Cloud is great for letting you play the same vault on multiple devices but don't rely on it for backup. Folks have very rarely reported their saves disappearing and even rechecking the Cloud box has been unable to retrieve them. Make sure to use some other form of backup. Android users have a very good backup app. iOS users have to manually copy the save files to keep backups.

Most likely your save is corrupted. I know, I just lost mine awhile back. Had to start over, but this time, I cheated for some Mr. Handy's and Lunchboxes. Let's hope Bethesda addresses the issue soon.
Also, if you want to fix this without uninstalling the app or confirm if your save is really corrupted, follow this:

Once there, look for the file VaultX.sav (X is the save file number 1-3) and check the size. If it's 0 kb then that means it's corrupted (sorry :( ). If not, then that means your save might still be working; if this is the case, just copy it elsewhere and delete the data folder, launch the game fresh, and then move the files back, and it should work, however I cannot guarantee it.
If the file size is 0 kb, well, FO: Shelter is gonna keep crashing as long as the file is there. So you'll have to delete that file, (not necessarily the whole folder) and start anew.

Actually, I found something that doesn't require a jailbreak on IOS 9.
There's a third party program called iMazing that can create backups of your data from your phone, including game saves that can be copied into other phones, or back into the same phone.
The resulting .imazingapp backup is just a renamed zip file that can have the vaultX.sav extracted and edited in FSSE, then overwriting that save into the zip file, renamed back to .imazingapp, then using the program to inject it back into the phone. It's pricey at $35 USD, but given this works across all apps is rather worth it as is, there's also a 15 day trial with full functionality (at least, the function(s) needed here).
Of course you can do that! As an iOS user, we always find ways to transfer data among iOS device. If you want to transfer data from iPad to iPhone, you can apply iCloud(https://www.apple.com/icloud/) /iPhone Transfer(http://www.recovery-ipad.com/iphone-transfer.html). This is a way about iCloud for you. Tap "Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup" on your iPad to select "Back up now" to back up your iPad data. Secondly, power on your iPhone and sign in with the same Apple ID to restore from iCloud backup of iPad.If your data is too large, you will wait for a long time and you'd better buy more storage for this backup files.
They're an older version of Bluestacks but they lack the bloatware and allow you to backup your saves using the Root Explorer.
Alternatively, you can try Andy, which I'm told is really good.
You can get a copy of the rooted version here. The main advantage is that you can make copies of your saves (and export them to an editor, if you'd like), which you can't do with the normal version of Bluestacks. The official version is also very ad-ware heavy and insists that you either download a lot of crap aps or pay for it.
There's also Andy the Android emulator, which lets you access your saves without jumping through hoops. It has trouble running FOshelter last I heard, though, and it has much higher system requirements.

If you want to edit your lunchboxes, search for LunchBoxesByType and LunchBoxesCount. There is a pair of square brackets after LunchBoxesByType. 0 is for a regular Lunchbox, 1 is for Mr. Handy boxes, 2 is for pet boxes and 3 is for starter packs, For each box that you want, add a 0,1,2.3 separated by a comma. So, if you want to add 10 boxes each, your square bracket content would be [0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,3]. Obviously, you'll need to adjust the LunchBoxesCount as to how many boxes you now have.

thank you very much for your help. I can confirm that it takes about 5 minutes until the contents of the boxes change. However, I am actually active during this time and collect resources or try to fulfill quests and goals. The way you described works for me and a friend who plays Fallout Shelter on the Playstation 4. For those who use an Android I can recommend another maybe more convenient way.

Works just as well on my Android and also allows you to create multiple savegames. Furthermore, I can confirm that the old trick of simply opening some other kind of box (e.g. pets) to change the contents of a box still works.

I tweaked it a little, though, so instead of using Dropbox and Dropsync (I don't have either), I used Foldersync (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dk.tacit.android.foldersync.full&hl=en). I didn't have to create a symlink, as I pointed Foldersync straight to the the directory on my computer, which is C:\Users<username>\AppData\Local\FalloutShelter. Works flawlessly :)
edit: When you switch to your phone (after syncing), make sure that the app refreshes properly by restarting it (close the app then open again).
First, thanks for all the links, they were very useful. Second, I'm sorry to say I still didn't find a solution for us. After reading some material beyond the links you posted it really seems that Unity is not handling very well the async processes that use the audio stream on Android.
Worst, it seems a bit subjective if it's an Unity problem itself or a [specific Android version] x [specific Unity version] issue, the worst possible scenario to try to detect and solve.
I've tried some almost-random stuff, only because I could, like using AudioHog and Audio Refocus, tried a lot of tests but no luck so far =/
Well, so far our only hope is that #1. Unity get their sh*t together and #2. Apps update themselves with the new shitty Unity, probably fixed..

Does your phone have a Back button? Pressing that from the FOS Main Menu should bring up a message confirming that you want to exit the app.
Also as a precaution against save file corruption, you might want to use a local backup app like Robot9706's save file editor with backup feature or Zara's backup app. That way you could restore your most recent save if you do suffer corruption. Or you could use the save editor to try and fix the corruption.
I agree it sounds like a bug of some sort. You could try some of the common solutions for fixing the bug itself (like clearing the app's cache, and uninstalling/reinstalling app after backing up your vaults).
Assuming you can't fix the bug, you can protect yourself from its consequences by keeping local backups of your vault. If on Android, there is both Zara's backup app and Robot9706's save editor with backup feature. If you notice something missing, you can just restore your most recent backup to hopefully get it back.
For reclaiming the 3 items you are already missing, I would recommend Robot9706's save editor to add those items back into your vault's inventory.

So you have the exact same problem as me...I usually have 400-500MB free, yet the game closes usually after about 5-10min being active.
After restarting my device and clearing all caches, I sometimes even get 20 minutes.
Nothing you can do here I'm afraid, the game needs too much memory and get's shut down by the operating system or some memory exception thrown by the game....
The only solution I know of is getting a device having more RAM (>2GB should be fine)
That, or the more complicated way of expanding your RAM via swapfile. But this requires:
1. Rooting your device
2. Checking if your device-kernel is supported (free app)
3. If compatible, installing this app: ROEHSOFT RAM Expander (8.99€)
Since I wanted to try the latter anyways, I can write you if it worked or not...
Thanks for that. Definitely fixed the issue for me. Was just having a moment of frustration over a constant wave of issues out of the app. Slowly rebuilding yet again, and using this as an excuse to restructure my base layout. Also, found another tool that will help defend against the frustration of full wipes due to bad user interface/selection system. "Backup for Fallout Shelter"; simplifies keeping backups of your saves.
